[Music] good morning my name is kimberly allred and i am a part of the roswell inc team i'd like to welcome you all to the roswell inc and georgia hispanic chamber of commerce memorandum of understanding signing ceremony this morning before the pandemic we were in the process of solidifying the significant partnership through an mou and we were beginning to discuss plans for a celebration now six months later we decided to not wait on the world to return to normal to celebrate the relationship we have formed between the two organizations during our ceremony this morning we are going to hear from several important individuals including the mayor of roswell the executive director of roswell inc and the president of the georgia hispanic chamber of commerce the president of roswell inc board of directors as well as the chairman of the chambers board will also share a few words and with that i'd like to introduce roswell's mayor lori henry thank you so much and i am so excited to be here this is a wonderful occasion where roswell inc and the greater hispanic chamber of commerce have come together to strengthen the business community in roswell and i would like to welcome the chamber and i would like to thank roswell inc for entering into this agreement with the chamber i can't tell you how excited we are to have this partnership here in roswell because we are all about building our businesses and making people feel at home roswell is a wonderful place to live work and play and own a business so thank you all for focusing on roswell it is my pleasure to welcome you here this morning and also thank you to roswell inc and i'll let you take it away thanks mayor my name is steve stroud i'm executive director of roswell inc we're the partner with the city of roswell to bring jobs and create commerce within the city and to create commerce you have to have business and business relationships and that's what gabriel and i have stroke together is creating with the georgia hispanic chamber more business and more commerce reaching out to the hundreds of professionals and business owners and that are included in the hispanic community in roswell and many of them like alberta i see on that i know that i've already done business with here in roswell we want to connect roswell to be your business community mayor henry said it best roswell is open for business roswell is about business and you know how you do business you do business with people and that's what we do we connect people on a continuous basis we're not a chamber that's why gabriel and i both laugh we're not a chamber we're working together with our chamber our greater north fulton chamber of commerce our state chamber the georgia chamber of commerce and of course now this partnership gabriel and i are neighbors so that adds a little spice to it because we see each other on the trails and at the river and walking almost weekly sometimes we run into each other at las hermanos grocery store and that is what makes community but atlanta and georgia is a community and roswell especially so we thank you for this partnership we're excited about what this will bring in commerce and again ultimately it will bring things like our we'll talk about at the end i'll give a plug right now though is that we have our first event next thursday a week from today joint event a virtual meeting uh talking about where the business looks and what it looks like in roswell right now from entrepreneurs not from gabriel and i but from the entrepreneurs that are on the ground so we're very excited about this first endeavor and we think that there will be many more to come so we appreciate it and we are very excited with that i want to turn it over to the president of our board mr ken davis president of renaissance bank georgia i'm ken davis and i'm excited about today's announcement uh roswell inc has been a partner with the city for the past 10 years and there have been a lot of great positive business environments and partnerships created over those 10 years and we're looking forward to expanding the existing relationship as steve said we're all about creating jobs and opportunities for companies to grow here in roswell and have a favorable business climate so um i know there's a lot more on this agenda today but i just want to say thank you and we look forward to partnering with the georgia hispanic chamber and to serving all the businesses in north fork so thank you very much thank you ken we're going to play a quick video um that tells a little bit about who we are at roswell inc for those that don't know us or are not familiar with us and it'll give you an opportunity to see and we'll do the same with with gabriel with the georgia hispanic local state and regional organizations and agencies to attract and recruit new businesses to roswell seeking companies that will enhance not just our economy but also our strong community culture once businesses are here our team works to help those companies grow and expand through location analysis market insight and providing important connections resources and support we help businesses take advantage of the right opportunities and adapt as their operating models change [Music] we also provide targeted support to our key industries to ensure their continued growth and sustainability from healthcare and technology to professional services and hospitality we deliver innovative programming and on-the-ground support to companies within these industries to help them thrive [Music] business thank you for watching gabriel i'm going to turn it over to you my new partner thank you so much i appreciate this this great ceremony we're very excited at the georgia hispanic chamber of commerce and first of all i want to thank steve stroud for all the work that you do and you're all your team to put this thing together also aixa pascual and gary palmer and pabel trouch i think that we've worked with all of them and they saw the vision the vision that this partnership and also we're able to communicate that vision to mayor henry uh because partnering with a diverse chamber is is leads to economic growth i mean it ends up any any partnership we do because we want to connect with these hispanic businesses you know i lived in in the city of roswell for about 12 years and like like you said i enjoy the tacos i love them and i'm always there i can't get out of there but anyway that's besides the point but but i do want to mention that these these businesses are thriving in the city of roswell and they want to succeed and they want to to contribute so you know i'm the interim president and ceo of the georgia hispanic chamber of commerce we've been in business for 36 years we're considered a large chamber in the world of chambers of hispanic chambers across the country there's probably about 200 of them all over the country and we're one of the large ones and our job is to provide services and business formation you know and we have a big board um maybe 30 people they're involved they're all diverse board we have all all folks from hispanic non-hispanics and um one of the things that we do is is is we provide economic growth and we work like what you do today with those small hispanic and non-hispanic businesses so i want to thank ish gail that she's on here also she's our our director of operations as well as norma suniga and she's our director of programming that we will be working with them also i was born in mexico city and and one of the things that i did is i came to the united states with with some money in my pocket a couple you know just a classic story to invest into the united states and i started up in chicago and not knowing how to do business in the u.s i went to the local chamber of commerce actually it was the hispanic chamber of commerce because there's cultural competency there and what i did there as i invested i hired employees but i also wanted to connect with the mainstream of america and that was with networking events and everything this education you can't do it alone as a diverse chamber so that is what we do as an hispanic chamber and this is why this partnership is is important we have hundreds of these companies all over all over the state of georgia especially especially here in in the city of roswell we have uh looked at our our our members and we have all kinds of members that are in the in in the in the industries of of financial accounting restaurants so they're there they live and they and they work with with with uh with clients and and members like you so so our partnership is gonna it's gonna be focused on education access to resources in english and we also do stuff in spanish because obviously a lot of these businesses are first i'm generation they do better in spanish but yes they are learning english yes they have to learn how to go to the banking system yes they have to do everything to be contributing into the mainstream of of of the united states and the city of roswell so i just want to mention one piece here and this is from the mou and i want to read it because it's just very short bear with me the features of this partnership includes cross-promotion of workshops special events online support educational seminars and programs in english and in spanish also a significant impact will be spanish-speaking advisors and mentors that the two organizations will work together so congratulations this is a great start and we have our first program coming up very soon so thank you so much for everyone and i want to turn it over to our chairman of the board yvonne shamas uh uh he's the general manager of telemundo atlanta to give a few words thank you steve and thank you mayor henry thank you gabriel that's excellent thank you gabe for that layup and thank you for the honor of being on this i love that we're not going to let kobot keep us down we're going to keep it going make it virtual that's the transition we've been doing at the ghcc we've been like um like roswell inc we've been um heavily involved with events workshops programs and a lot of it has been the face-to-face relationships in person but what we're doing and what we see you doing is continuing this momentum with a lot of virtual opportunities so yes gabe mentioned i'm ivan shamus i'm the proud chair of this amazing board i love that we've got some board members on the on the call with us and the ghcc team this is a special moment for us as well because we value these types of partnerships um first let me thank the mayor of roswell mayor henry for being on the line with us and her support in spearheading this steve as well i'm looking forward to getting to know you man and thanks for what you're doing with gabe i think it all started with the community relationship in the neighborhood and we've been able to grow from there uh i know you've heard it but the mission of the georgia hispanic chamber of commerce is to promote and support the domestic and international economic development of hispanic businesses and individuals and what i love most is and to serve as a link between the non-hispanic entities and the hispanic markets so this is not just for hispanic-owned businesses we're going to be supporting those that already realize the change that's happening in our country and are jumping on that train and making it happen as our community shift completely so yes this is a proud moment because it's an exciting partnership um we know that this is going to directly impact our respective organizations both of us and it's going to allow us to do what we do best help businesses prosper so we take pride in we take pride in being the largest one of the largest hispanic chambers across the nation and we're taking pride in also working with roswell inc and the city of roswell there's a lot of positives happening and there's a lot of change and that's one thing that we know for sure but when gabe tells me that we've already got some events lined up that's that's extremely promising and and i love that the momentum is still moving uh a side note hispanics continue to be the fastest growing minority in our state we know in the country one out of six are already latino and one out of four are being born so organizations such as yourself cities such as roswell businesses who who may not even realize how to tap into the hispanic community but realize that's the change are who we want to cater to and work with so we're doing the right thing both the ghc and roswell inc are in great hands with saudi leaders and and i can say that proudly about what gabe is doing they are have already built this on a strong relationship we're going to continue to build those new connections because that's what it's all about i'm going to encourage everybody to find each other on linkedin as well and let's know that we're in this together and we can give each other layups introductions whatever we got to do to make it happen so thank you roswell inc for seeing the value of our community and for choosing to work with not just the chamber but the hispanic community if you will so gracias gracias to my counterpart ken as well who i'm looking forward to meeting i love that we're adding a little spice as steve said a little latin spice into the city of roswell and this is just the beginning of great things so i'm looking forward to working with you guys as well thank you very much thank you and and i believe now that we have a a a video and i do rivera who has some closing remarks yeah and let me just introduce andrea she's on her exec she's in our on our executive committee and is and she's been a community leader for the hispanic community for many many years and we appreciate all the work that she does as a leader for latina women as well as everything she does with her marketing company so she's on her executive committee and and and we ask her we're honored for her to do the closing comments so thank you good morning good morning thank you so much i want to start with by thanking steve stroud and mayor henry and gabe vaca for initiating this program this this is such an important step for into the georgia hispanic chamber and i just want to thank all of you for for taking having the courage to do this um in 1987 the hispanic population roswell was almost non-existent and in metro atlanta was also very small but we di have a handful of businesses hispanic-owned businesses that came together about three years before that to join to create what is today the georgia hispanic chamber of commerce as that group of leaders celebrated their three thirty year in existence my parents were settling into a small house just down the street from martin's lake in roswell roswell has been home to my family for 33 years this is where my brothers grew up where we married had children raised families i just graduated my youngest son from centennial high school last year in 2019 and where a couple of us have started businesses i will give full disclosure that i no longer live in roswell but it's only been a year since but um my mother and two of my brothers still live in roswell and and have children there and businesses there um hispanics are not new to roswell at the highest peak of population growth in the city in the late 1990s early 2000s almost every business on alberta highway south of houckenbridge road was hispanic owned or serving one of every four roswell residents at that time was hispanic so we know that that roswell roswell has been home for his hispanics for a long time and although uh after the recession of 9 11 a lot of those businesses did not survive there are a bunch that did and that are still there i wanted to highlight a couple of them uh gabe and steve both apparently share my love for tacos i know i've run into uh gave their review times myself um love that place it was one of the large one of the first and the largest grocery stores that provided ethnic foods meats vegetables to our community for 20 years right next to the southern skillet on alfredo highway now they've moved to the old rite aid uh store where the new ross store is at so if any of you want to have really probably the best tacos in atlanta i would highly encourage you to go there all the way in the back is the taqueria and just ask for some steak tacos another great place that i love in roswell that's been there for about 15 years as baby salon they moved in a couple of doors next to the old tony's bar and grill over on dogwood and holcomb bridge bibis peda who's a mexican uh mexican descent opened that that salon and it's been my place uh to get my hair done all of these years for probably about 15 years bibi owns four locations of baby salon now all over atlanta but she got her start right here in roswell 20 years ago as the as the hispanic community was really at its peak um my brother and his wife saw an opportunity to start a business and they started a private tax taxi company and uh and airport transportation and despite a lot of the shifts in the population and the rideshare platforms that have come in to challenge them they are still able to serve a large portion of the hispanic market and the unbanked market which is something that i didn't even really know existed but they've been able to thrive and they still live in roswell and have their business in roswell um also i wanted to i couldn't i couldn't speak on all these favorites without mentioning it at el este grocery store so when i first moved to roswell one of the first people that i met was a young lady about my age she was probably 19 we were 19 or 20 when we met and she had a little grocery store just like a convenience store they did check cashing uh right there next to smith tire on alfreda highway lydia opened that store because her brothers all were owned all of the aztecas mexican restaurants but she didn't like uh the restaurant business and she thought a grocery store would be more feasible for her and so she had that business for a long time unfortunately in 2008 lydia was killed in a robbery at the store her parents kept the business for a couple of years and i eventually sold it um but it's still there i drive by and i see it all the time and i think of her and today and as i was as i was thinking about this partnership i was thinking about what she would think about roswell now as a business owner and i think that this morning that lydia would be excited to see that roswell the georgia hispanic chamber of commerce are coming together to build bridges between our communities she would be encouraged that the opportunities that are good that and the of the alliance between these two are two organizations and empowered at the site of our city making intentional strides towards preserving nurturing and growing hispanic business in our community hispanic business is not new to roswell we've been here for a long time and i want to thank all of these courageous leaders for their work to recognize them and support their continued growth thank you thank you for those kind words those words from your heart um once again it shows mayor henry that roswell is a community we talk a lot about different communities in different cities but roswell is very special to a lot of people and it's home to over a hundred thousand people that live here uh that used to sometimes leave here to go other places to work but are working here and living here and as the mayor said live work and play and uh many of us are fortunate to be able to do that so we want to make sure that these businesses prosper so with that i want to say don't forget our our first event next thursday 9 to 10 you can sign up we'll send out some more literature about it and you'll make sure that you're you're have an opportunity to sign up we want you to connect and we want you to spread the good word and gabriel i'm very excited if i could shake your hand we would shake we do a lot of fist bumps in the grocery store mayor henry thank you for much to us and to this city uh to help grow the businesses that we have and the future businesses because you know a lot of times you hear this your best customer is your current customer and you've
