hi so let's look at the executive summary assignment it is a lot like the job ad research memo assignment in that it is 100 points 10% of your grade and it is taking a lot of information and summarizing it in a single page document so as you can tell we believe that you're going to have to do research over and over and over again in which you tell your superiors why something is important and you condense data and you're able to identify what those parts are so that other people can skim them find them and use them now the executive summary assignment is an executive summary it is a summary for an executive if you've never heard that word before usually every proposal or report will have an executive summary that's typically paperclip to the top or appears in the first few few pages and that allows an executive to quickly get a sense of what's in the report or proposal so that they can determine what they're going to focus on and just get a sense of the overall gist basically what's the meaning what's what's the most important stuff so when you create your own executive summary you're going to want to create headings they don't have to look like the ones I've done here in fact typically headings are bolded and they're their phrases or single words and they tell someone what they're looking at the paragraphs that you use should be no more than eight lines and getting to eight lines is a lot of lines it still suggests that maybe somebody's not going to read every word there remember that each member of the group is going to work alone so this is a great activity to do before you really polish up your proposal walk through your proposal and ask yourself you know what are the different parts write them down and identify what's important in each part so if you notice you're gonna submit to e-learning you're going to use appropriate titles and document carefully so people want to glance through the document and understand the relevance you're going to summarize the proposal the main points in the most relevant data in the same order that the section of the proposal are presented that's why this becomes a great activity to do before you polish the proposal and complete it and then polish the executive summary after you've finished that proposal because this gives you a sense of what you really need to work on in the proposal since you're going to look at each part in order you're going to make sure you convey the most important information if you must quote you use only short quotations in quotation marks and documented because they are at because they are absolutely necessary don't use quotations unless you have to if you're going to use longer quotations paraphrase and still give them credit using APA style you're going to use headings so make sure that people can skim using headings that's important be concise to get to the point keep the summary at a single page that it reflects the entire proposal understand the value of the information that you're conveying in the house how that information relates to other information I want you to brand your summary remember that you're speaking for the company so it should look and sound like someone from that company it should look like documentation from the company so what is important for that company in this executive summary and what should that look like proofread carefully to show that you can do this professionally and with precision you can reference the examples on learning there are example proposals read the proposals and look at the executive summaries of those proposals in order to understand the assignment better okay so here's an example of the Batarian project executive summary see how I have commentary that shows why this is important here's the name of the the proposal this tells what it is and then who argue make sure that it's clear now your work does not have to appear just like this one does but you want all those elements at the top of your page now you're gonna break your proposal and parts what is the point of each part and why is it important so you know as you go through this look at the introduction why is that important look at the background why is that important look at the proposal itself and what what they're proposing and how much it costs those are the important things why what what are they doing how long is it going to take be able to summarize this cover that you're going to cover those proposal sections in the same order as the proposals and you're not going to quote long quotes unless it's absolutely necessary if at all possible use a summary rather than quotations you're going to combine sections if necessary like the schedule and staff and then you're going to end by explaining to the chamber why this is important and what they're gonna do so remember that's what the Chamber of Commerce cares about and that's what your boss cares about okay so let's talk about another proposal the mrs. Baird's 100 for 100 pyramid scheme virtual food drive and this looks a little different than the other executive summary notice that we have the repetition of the title and they've borrowed the look of the proposal itself they explain what it is and they give the name so this is something you need to do now it could look different TX use executive summary is going to look different than ubers executive summary so brand your executive summary like you would the company now notice this one has the introduction and the most critical parts of the introduction what their goals are etc we have the background why this is important because this particular proposal spent a lot of time and why it was important then we get to the proposal itself and notice how each part of this after the introduction has that colon and then what what we're doing in this these two paragraphs or in the paragraph so so what it is we're describing and you don't have to have all the same titles maybe there's an aspect of this proposal that you need to include that that isn't reflected in typical proposal titles so that might be something like the mrs.
