arrow connectors and I'll show you another way approach to fixing and I've seen a lot of slide sets where the author's kind of went crazy with the little smart art and they've got arrows everywhere and one thing you can do is group the group some are all of the components and then put alt text for the whole group so this is I'll call this the faster process agency so some description of the whole process and so you can see that these straight arrow connectors no longer show up under my missing alt text so now we have this content placeholder so this is something that actually was already okay in this slide set but I took it out just so I could demo it in this case they took a page out of the RSR instruction manual and are displaying it and you could pull up the manual copy this text and paste it into the description if it's if the content of this image is what's important or if what's important is just to say the RSR instruction manual contains detail of the exemption you could say that here so you know if this is just a signified go to the manual and it has all the details then you can say something like that but if it's really the if the person who is presenting this presentation is going to go through each item and you need to spell out each item and we have another case so this is a table and but it's missing alt text and so tables need summaries and well that's what we call them on the web and but here in PowerPoint they're calling them alt text but that's really just a table you really just need a short description of the content of the table table listing documents and and I wanted to well that's so that fixes that for this table and then the last example for the missing alt text is here this is a just a cup art picture that's meant to be decorative it's not conveying any content so in this case we sort of want the screen reader to ignore it and what you can do if you want screen reader to ignore it is put quotation marks open and closed on March in the description field and you can see it fell off the list I'm gonna come back to this this other table so I'm not gonna fix it so then for the warnings we have this issue of in this first cell they merged or in the first row they merged two cells and they have documents they have this title of the table there and really in accessibility you don't want to merge cells at all screen reader can handle going through columns and rows but when you merge cells it really makes it difficult if not impossible for it to know what goes with what so don't merge cells and when you have really complicated tables which you fully don't have and PowerPoint but you may have in a Word document you have to get creative and how you present the information but here is my semi creative solution to that problem here you can see here was documents to have available in the merge cell and I just split the cells and put the documents here and description here and now this table is 508 compliant and so it wouldn't show this one wouldn't show up in the warning but this one would under tips here then we have these duplicate slide titles and I'll show you a little bit here's if you change your view to outline view and wait you'll see this is sort of what's going to get read to your user right there although this doesn't show the alt text but it does show in this case we have a slide with no title and you know you you want a title for every slide so I'll have to figure out what to do with that presentation 101 or 102 one thing I do if I have text that I don't want to show up sometimes I'll make it font size of one you can see it doesn't show up there but you do have a title here so that's one little cheat but for the duplicate slide titles I'll show you another cheat so this one we have two slides in a row that have the same title and what you can do here is one of two to two if you don't like the way that looks you can make this the same cut you could make it one point or you can make it the same color as the background and then it doesn't show up but it'll be red invisible to the screenreader so that's a approach for fixing duplicate slide titles so the last thing I'd like to show is how to check the reading order on the slide and it's again the description here under additional information is very good and you'll need to go back to it the first 20 times you do this because the place where you find the reading order is on the Home tab under a range and selection pane and so I'm willing to bet most of you have never been to this little feature of PowerPoint but it describes here an additional information how they get there so first I'll show you on the simpler slide how the reading order works so the reading order goes from bottom up and I don't really know why but in the Microsoft accessibility checkers than PowerPoint or PowerPoint it's bottom up so the title should always be the last thing and then you can see here for a simple slide the content placeholder there's only two elements on this page and it's going to read them correctly where it gets tricky is somewhere like this where we've added all of these text boxes and arrows and citation down here and so we need to check and see how what order this will be read in so I'm going starting at the bottom the title that's a good start and then the first column of text that's fine but then the second column of text that's not fine then the footer then this federal agency so we want this federal agency image to be at in the first column after that text then we want this little arrow and I'm clicking on the elements so that's straight arrow connector 16 so that'll go here so come on federal agency so then column 2 and footer let's put the footer at the end column two text box 8 that's right arrow inside percipient then the footer so you can see I was just dragging these around you can also select them and move them with these arrows if you're you prefer and so that's how you check the slide order and you can see again if you're using the standard template it's pretty much you know you'll be in good shape with if you're adding elements you know check it and make sure that it's
