For example, the POS and Inventory management software is so well tuned, that it does an incredible job in predicting demand for a particular item up to the not only the day, hour or minute, but to the second.They also have a great deal of foresight in branding most customer facing technology in the store's iconic color of Red.  And look to the finest detail on how to improve the entire check out experience.  Not just optimized for speed (see Walmart) but optimized for the best possible experience.  This is one of the largest forces driving the company's adoption of technology and perhaps the high wisdom that is seen in the way they deploy this technology. It sure seems simple and logical today, but it was anything but that when the ideas were being hashed out.Over the years. Target has experimented with a number of customer facing systems from IBM, Verifone and Hypercom.  The most recent standardization is with a customized version of the Hypercom Optimum L4150 High-Performance Multi-Lane Payment and Advertising Terminal.Hypercom L4150How Does Target Speed Up Payment Card Acceptance?There are many parts that go into creating the very speedy Payment Card experience at most Target stores.  As mentioned above the customized L4150 is the point of interaction and allowed for much of the changes we see in the checkout experience.  But there is a lot going on in the background. The L4150 is connected to the POS system usually and IBM SurePOS 500 or 700 and routed through custom software that is connected to the Payment Card Authorization systems.  All of this tech has been optimized by and for Target. The process starts when the customer swipes the Payment card and this can be the moment the first item is scanned by the cashier.  Once the card is swiped there is an immediate request for a signature.  When the last item is scanned the system completes the transaction and prints the last lines of the receipt and this can be as fast as 2 seconds.  If one waits to the end of the last scan to swipe the credit card and the transaction is below $50 there will be no prompt for a signature and this is equally as fast.  A Pleasant Surprise The entire process is designed to be highly efficient and very simple for the consumer to translate.  It comes as a pleasant surprise to just about all of us, even when when have experienced the process before.  It is in stark contrast to most Payment Card transaction experiences.  This well thought out process is combined with one of the fastest Payment Card Authorization network connections, at a major retailer, using M-Dex ((Merchant Direct Exchange) established by Visa  to process at 1mb+ speeds for very large retailers (500,000+ transaction/month). The entire backend is driven by a 5mb-25mb connection to the Target's VPN (Virtual Private Network) using Microsoft's Virtualization solution— Hyper-V. The system is run on Dell R710 servers for the hosts running Hyper-V and Dell MD1000 storage units. There are 15,000 virtual guests running on more than 3,600 Hyper-V hosts across the entire store network.  This supports updates to more than 300,000 endpoints across the network, including servers, virtual machines, mobile devices, PCs, and POS registers. Target, with about 1,768 stores, usually has no IT personnel on-site and has found the Hyper-V virtualization allows a vast majority of issues to be solved at the data center and not locally. Microsoft has a great case study of some aspects of Target’s backend technology with the use of the Hyper-V product here: Microsoft Case Study: Microsoft Services - Target Corporation.This system shows a rather huge commitment to technology and a desire to create the most optimal consumer experience.  To see how the same set of circumstances is translated with other national retailers, visit Walmart or Kmart and judge the experience.  In Walmart's case, they have a profound, "If it was not invented here, it is not relevant" attitude with its study of the retail experience, and one can surmise if this translates to a richer experience for its customers.  By contrast, Target is more than willing to continue to test and experiment and to signNow outside of the company for experts that have studied these processes.  I personally think Target is the best example one can find in balancing all important aspects and crafts into one of the top 5 best retail experiences and I feel strongly that wise retailers can gain great insights by studying Target and the way they see its customers.

In either case the thought is communicated to the paper by the use of the finger resting upon the pen; nor does it make any difference that in one case common record ink is used, while in the other case a more subtle fluid, known as electricity, performs the same office."This ruling has formed the foundation in US law all the way up to the Facsimile machine and the current finger signatures that are common to the current smartphone payment apps.  The US codified the law more clearly in the E-Sign Act ( the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act} from 2001 [2].  This expands upon the prior Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) [3].The E-Sign Act states:(a) IN GENERAL.—Notwithstanding any statute, regulation, or other rule of law (other than this title and title II), with respect to any transaction in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce—(1) a signature, contract, or other record relating to such transaction may not be denied legal effect, validity, or enforce- ability solely because it is in electronic form; and(2) a contract relating to such transaction may not be denied legal effect, validity, or enforceability solely because an electronic signature or electronic record was used in its formation.A Payment Card Transaction Is A Signed ContractA Payment Card transaction is a contract between the cardholder and the card issuing bank and indirectly the merchant.  When a cardholder authorizes a bank for the use of a Payment Card they are also authorizing your approval of all transactions with or without a signature. Thus at the very least there is cardholder authorization for a transaction that was conducted using an Electronic Signature regardless of the E-Sign Act.  But with the E-Sign Act the mark would be considered valid unless the cardholder contests or otherwise repudiates the transaction.  This would be considered a Chargeback and it is another thing entirely (see: Brian Roemmele's answer to How do you prevent people from using chargebacks as a method for refunds?).Apple And A New IOS "Home Button", A Finger Print Electronic Signature SystemThe electronic signature will continue to evolve. Mobile devices haven’t really impacted the process of instructional design. What they have done is to provide additional solution options for instructional designers.One of the big questions an instructional designer asks, when examining a deficiency in job performance or gap in knowledge, skills, and attitudes, is whether the best intervention is to provide training that is provided before execution of a task or whether the deficiency/gap can be addressed via job aids.A job aid is a tool used to provide incidental and informal learning and reduce the amount of intentional and formal learning needed by making information available as it is needed, in the workplace. When this is accomplished using something like a mobile device, it is called an EPSS (Electronic Performance Support System). Examples of this include procedures, help desks, job aids, and reference documents. Mobile devices mean that even out in the field, an employee can have instant access to procedures, tools, and references that allow them access to information they have not retained through instruction.EPSS can greatly simplify job execution and reduce the amount of training needed prior to performing a task, but there are potential disadvantages. EPSS can be expensive to implement, particularly intrinsic EPSS. EPSS also puts a lot of faith in the user correctly interpreting the information being presented to them. For this reason, EPSS should not be used to replace training, but instead to reduce training.If the instructional designer determines that job aids are not sufficient and training is required, mobile devices can also play a role. Such devices easily support microlearning. Microlearning involves delivery of instruction in small and focused (bite-sized) chunks, often via digital means. For example, if one wants to reset a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) outlet that has tripped, in their home, one can watch a two-minute Youtube video that will show how to do so, safely.This type of micro-learning is often part of what is called JITT (Just in Time Training). JITT is training that is rolled out right before it is needed. Most remarkable of those are related to IT services such as e-government. Here is a brief outline of current achievements.Every citizen has an ID card, which is in essence a certificate, a public-private key pair. ID-card can be used to sign documents. Such digital signature has the same legal power as a handwritten signature. This means that you do not have go anywhere to give your signature - you can do it online. Also, using the ID-card one can authenticate on all public service websites as well as in the internet banks, online shops, etc. ID-card makes electronic voting possible.An alternative to ID card is Mobile-ID, which allows secure authentication (just like ID-card) using your own mobile phone with a special SIM-card. This service is supported by all mobile operators.All public services are integrated among each other (this is called X-Road). For example, I pay my taxes online. I click a link in the internet bank to send my home loan information to the tax system. The tax system will take some additional information on the estate I have from land and estate registry. I am presented a final calculation of tax returns that I only have to confirm (digitally). All this takes about 5 minutes. The trick is that such solutions do not require big-data technologies in Estonia - a good relational database will do. This, however, does not diminish the work of all the developers. Do it in a nice way: address it to the owner, asking him or her to clear the balance.Peer PressureIt could be they are procrastinating in dealing with you, or they’re too busy.
