Dugan thank you all okay anywhere in Rhode Island the verb to be movies great thank you if we could go to the next slide so you can know how we were rising our time in our aims for today my first ones we accomplished our welcome and introductions and getting familiar with the platform the slides will talk about the context for healthy in Rhode Island that one with the health aging data report products and go through piece by piece so you can know what rules are that are now available to help you work without ways to use data to make a difference on share examples and about working with partners and then open it up to questions the answers so would slide I love that image on the top of the slide where it shows that we are an ancient world and this is the dramatic transformation that we're living in and the chart shows you the print of the population that's 65 and over over time and so you can see that it goes from 1850 and puts out to 2050 you can see that the blue line which represents the percentage of the population of older adults it has consistently wizard and in about a year we'll cross and the author red line shows the percentage of the population of 5 and younger so children you can see that that percentage has gone down and so we're about to enter does do if a gland it's a fantastic transformation that we have never been observed planet before and this is new there's our urgency to our work and this is something that will be a lasting important change in terms of who's alive next alrod Rhode Island you can see that one thing to be proud of this broad island has the highest proportion of us adults who are 85 and older and some numbers as of 2010 there were slightly more than 100 and fuels and adults 65 and older in Rhode Island and looking in the future that will increase 75% to more than a quarter million so globey it's this transformation and it's happening Rhode Island as well yes more than 10,000 US adults are turning 65 every day and in 14 years more than twenty three percent of Rhode Island will be 65 and older so there's a lot happening globally uncle e as well next this wait to portray the aging of Rhode Island and you can see over time this is from 2010 out to 2040 the popular trends for people 65 and over again a steady increase of the aging population of strengths that Rhode Island has to build them and the footage that you have state and local leaders who recognize the importance of data-driven approaches importance of low solutions and that nothing to discount the abundance support of Volusia this very big impressive to me it's also an active group of motivated stakeholders our advisory board our community partners have really evolved and motivated in this work and another piece a strong tool a strong asset that you have in your work in making Island or age friendly and then third bar primes and resources is a place that can help you it may be possible to old on the department of health health equity loans work to build my agent in community report and certainly with the lieutenant governor committee on long term services so there's a lot of movement within the state that you build on to help make them in war is currently next okay sorry this is the screenshot or edge of the highlights report which lies is all the work that we did related to the and what we'll do first take a look at what we learned about the health in I one older adults next like much of the Northeast when you look nationally what I all looks very healthy in fact in one thought he was rated eleventh healthy for older adults but when you look with him impaired across New England states what I'm not fare so well and in fact how many indicators had the worst worst rates in New England the explanation is that the New England states tend to have higher levels of ever come and higher educational levels some social resources that parts of the rest of the country do not have so that contributes to us looking quick when you compare nationally but when you look within reach it a like population DC that wrote out on has many communicators so you can see here the indicators where Rhode Island had the highest rate for all england states and rates for hypertension and high cholesterol ER are very alarming to me you can see almost a percent of the population has those skaters and then heart disease diabetes and multiple comorbidities those rates are quite high so if you are looking at statewide image these might be areas that you need focus on time bring these rates dan more acceptable levels next so that drives healthy aging at the popular well surprising we know that better population health is associated with higher levels of income and education not having a more readily diverse and acculturated population all things being equal contributes to a healthier population and fortunately that good health behaviors and the use of preventive services can contribute to capitulation out areas that we can know the facts that era so where's population health less edition population at older population pool environments and higher percentages of older women and veterans in the population now this just a simple way to compare communities we regulated rates for more than 120 indicators at the community level and at the state level and then counted out how many indicators in a community or better than the state rate or worse than the state rate and this is just one way to rankle them and using this very simple but you can see that change town report in Portsmouth had decatur's or most indicators that were better than staybridge and going down to the next grouping you can see the kitties that had the most Gators that were worse than state average Providence other and that's the parts of Providence that do not include those good codes for 2906 Woonsocket and Central Falls for the areas with the most indicators that were worse than the state average another interesting part about this chart is you can look at the third column so it's indicators better than average worse and come over here to the Medicare service use and you can see that not surprising lower services ation is associated with better than stay rich and hire service utilization is seeing it with where some state average and so for if your other of health care services at the state level that that's another motivation to try and make improvements because you see its associated with health care costs as well next now to think about it is to look at the performance of where the rates on different indicators and to compare communities that have the best rates versus those communities that have the worst rates so mortality rate physical activity CDC preventive screenings obesity depression Alzheimer's this is just a select list that we wanted to share with you when physical activity is indicate is open to a lot of innovations or improvements belt and so you can see the keys were the best rates in physical activity were Providence East which is the 0 to 9 06 area east Gretchen north kingstown and then the works for any physical activity were the rest of Providence Woonsocket Pawtucket and so challenged can you to think about what are the characteristics the environmental characteristics or resource source or assets allow the keys were the best rates to have such high physical great other things they could be transferred or copied in these communities that have the worst rates if so that can be something because I'm in terms of trying to make it an improvement as we know it so far have not discovered a fountain abuse so there is the inevitable march toward death that we all experience but physical activity seems to be the one thing presenta fits for people and if you can improve physical activity prove overall health quality of life and loot and so that's a way of looking at this comparison and you could through that step by step with each of the indicators that are pin it and look and see where the things that are characteristic of the better forming communities could be you know I played into the communities that have the worst rate next so sometimes people e that it seems bigger goal to try and make their community.more agent Lee or try and move the needle on healthy aging and it big challenges I understand those feelings but wanted to do it is to you data to make a difference oh the first is to understand your community to sit down and read the community profile to look at who's in community what Eric teristics are how does it compare to state and you work your way through the other tools that are on the website that will run a few minutes and help you to identify what target what to focus on instead of going after the huge complex issue you can focus on one indicator that is related or will help improve the oil situation second things to not try and change the world by fell off I recognize that the most if it changes when we're working with us and there's you know that great in proverb that I'll forget wrong but it's like if you want to go fast go along and if you want to go far go to others at the same idea here if you want to really make progress with how aging in your community or in your state don't try go it alone but find others other people even the participants on this webinar involved in the healthy aging movement our advisory board members but to health plan foundation folks and many others that are available and interested and find people that you can join with and learn from and be encouraged by as you move forward and we plan an act so the one tenant we've learned through the process of this work is to start with winnable battles and that you can make progress in in one to three years and then you can use the momentum from those winnable battles to help you tackle the remaining challenges that your community has so it's standing research community is raging with others and planning and acting as you go forward next so go to the website and ok thank you for you at the ones here okay can I say that all right here this shows you the healthy aging data report dot website which is by JSI and with financial support provided health plantation and it is a showcase of data reports and only two states in the nation have this data available the breath evita focused on healthy aging and cocoa focus really makes it unique and so here you I assume you all from Rhode Island will look at the Rhode Island data and walk you through this well with you can see left tab to navigate and then there's also hot weather links that you can click on here to explore the report and let's see do you have any systems for what we should look at first well why don't you click to the highlights report because we want to let folks know many of them may have attended an event or gotten a hard copy of the highlights report from us directly but it is available on the website and it can be demoted and shared and it is a great summary document to introduce all of the that was compiled and to help folks understand some materials FF just reviewed some of the charts and graphs it's a good-looking off point and it's a good way to bring others into this work right yes I always report of a wonderful resource and maybe they will look at the infographic and this is a one-page summary designed by the JSI people that can be a great tool if you're going to meet with a policymaker your legislator or your briefing your supervisor about the native report this can be a great tool to share because it's one page and it's you know Billy but it also includes a lot of data that can can help and soon as you see the infographic the information about what the population projection the high proportion of the burial in Island which is great it shows that there's something working but it's also the for long-term services and supports tends to increase with advancing age so that also has consequences for the state you can dehydrate I'm here to the New England let's portrayed there and this map in the Middle I will call your attention to green Tim's show you the better than the average these with many indicators that are better than average and so you can shows and then the elders always reflect some challenges that communities are facing now there's lots of nine and arrows on this map that into potential targets of intervention or communities that could I'll join with you and work to make Rhode Island healthier and more each family recommendations of how to go forward so I think infographic is a great tool to help help you and it's one page so if you are meeting with people you just want to give them a quick snapshot this can be a great thing to share with people let's see let's go see let's go to the healthy eating indicator maps okay be okay yeah yourselves so here I'm the community profiles we report indicators related to publish and characteristics wellness and prevention neutran and diet chronic disease disability access to care services utilize utilization barrels related to the community and civic engagement same transportation economic and cost of living variables what that people like is to rear the petition density it well as frequently used and with this map one dot will let's see how many people take a load here yeah alright so one dot equals 100 people age 65 and with this map it shows you where the old Earth's are located within Rhode Island and this can have consequence for services for businesses that are trying to target the consumers and service degree of planning so this map is very popular one that people liked in their own report so there are only grant applications that type of thing the second page of that is bark showing you district an in-text so in case you don't have great jaga few skills or you're not familiar with all the communities in Rhode Island you can see in text and it's ordered from high to low in these folks their charts can be helpful in trying to motivate someone with picking because ally or an advocate because if your community is at either the high end or the low end it may indicate a different reactions or responses but seeing where your communities l cated out of the whole state can be quite illuminating popular one and then let's look at some of the chronic disease so let's try heart disease and this map shows you the percentage of Medicare beneficiaries who are 65 and older that have ischemic heart disease and with this and all the maps we've ordered intensity from light to dark so the communities with lighters in lighting I have lower rates and communities and the darker shades have the highest rates so this you the distribution of heart disease across the state and you can come down to the bar charts and see that the state rate is there and the communities that have rates that are noticeably higher one sock at westworld reckon north smithfield are the top three can you may be applying for a grant from the American Association or something else and you'll find that some of these chronic disease maps or wellness and Prevention maps can be quite helpful to you in your work ok so there some maps which we went next oh the other maps are the interactive map gratia the love and usually I like to start with the interactive maps when I'm trying to get a handle on the health of the state with this I see number of chronic diseases Alzheimer's disease diabetes stroke cotd hypertension heart attack heart disease congestive heart failure arthritis and so on and you can miss over the difference of the state and see what the radios and where that community ranks out of it but what can be helpful informative if you're trying to get a handle on the distribution of disease of the state is to just click to all the indicators and try and see if you observe a pattern their communities that are consistently dark rent were the lightest shade another running either very high or very low rates of the conditions in integrating enough we did not see consistent pattern it would easier to fix if the same community as well so going all the time but with this there's not even if you look at like the car dealer conditions that may be tend to cluster together so here we've got heart attack I'm into heart failure there's maybe through here you see some consistent pace trades but Natalie so this can help give you a good good set of the overall distribution and if you're interested in that particular yes we'll say from westerly and you understand what's going on with Western we can jump in as click through the condition see where westerly has or your community has the highest or lowest rates interesting western we don't have a lot of conditions that seem to be on the high end of the scale okay to a sense of the interactive maps and go to the community profiles let's show folks where they can get the data sources and the technical information good idea so a report tells you the indicators where our data sources were where we drive the three main source of data were from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare services master beneficiary summary file the census using data for 2010 census or a five-year average of the American Community Survey and then art nurs at the Department of Health in rail and shared with us the behavioral risk factor surveillance system data and more are large most important data sources and we also beta other places that are described in the technical report there's our information on how we define the geographic areas and our estimation techniques as well if you're a data nerd you'll definitely want to check this out and if you're not a date a nerd but you suffer from insomnia this would be a great resource for you the technical report and appendices and I guess let's go to the community profiles and in here we have 31 community profiles for rhode island communities and two more hugs of boston of providence sorry and then within that we also did where to drill down to the zelda ville 420 squeeze of the high population areas within rhode island and so here let's pull up Cranston it's a five page report for each community and it there's a narrative summary up top and you can see where the community is located what county it's and then on the first page we have popular characteristics that are reported to community well and at the state level so then how can folks use the data report that the community profile specifically to develop programs that line up with their community demographics that's a good question ellery sir if you look on the first page it's got a lot of information about population characteristics well if you have to no funding constraints to programs for the population that's 60 and all you would would certainly interested to see here the percentage of the population that's 60 and older we round up its twenty percent which is similar to the state average and then plates to 16,000 759 adults so this first page tells the story of who's in your community and then you can look and see if you're trying to do a program for the very old you may be interested to know in percentage of the older population how's it split and then Cranston there's a lot of young old people 47.7 percent thirty percent in old and then nineteen percent in the oldest old category so that can help inform services and also planning for the future if you can see you've got a large group in the pipeline there'll be a need for that in less than ten years to use this first page to help her services or planning is to look signage of the population that's looking alone this could be a very informative variable too because it may have implications for transportation or for security the final situation of other people living alone tends to be worse than people who are living without our partners someone else so this would be another variable but I pay close attention to if I were trying to develop services for my community and had servers that were to be tailored for a race or ethnic group this page would be helpful too so that's what I would recommend the first page would help in terms of the question Kelly you and one of the health department or a community partner proposes a wellness program how can the folks use those data report to help them determine what's the best match for their community's needs well we had one example that we had from Massachusetts was the Department of Public Health had gotten a big clear from they were then to distribute across the state and they actually used our data report to make those funding allocation decisions you know I didn't maybe wrote I will have something similar so if there were a big grant from related to false friendship or health screenings or flu shots you may one cook unless wellness and prevention section and depending on the indicator of interest or the program of interest look and see our rates that are better words from the state rate that are indicated here this B represents better see if there's a w somewhere but that that would be one for instance Cranston is better than state average in meeting the older residents meeting the preventive health screening goals so that's a that's a positive or maybe something related to Falls the fact that 7.2 10 of the Popish and older population Cranston has suffered a fall that was severe enough to cause an injury may be something that would warrant a fall tension program or you couldn't get the flu shot is another one that is not easy to intervene ax and they realize that given conferences for the health and function of older adults if that's the flu the fact that it's fifty-nine percent and the you know mission could concern any maybe that would indicate that just be a good indicator to try enough that is of high interest tends to relate to nutrition and so we round up twenty two percent of the option and Cranston is getting the recommended levels of fruits and vegetables so that concerning or obesity up another one to these like to intervene on to train reduce obesity so this page gives you a lot of information that can help inform prevention program thank you I see that the next section here is with health indicators what can we from those and it would that ingest that would be an area of opportunity for new programs are there ways to as some of those indicators would intuition with existing program mental health is a huge concern largely because there's much stigma in the older adult court right now and there's also a lack of access to a train providers in geriatric psychiatry in fact it read something recently that most or adult adult with mental health issues are treated by their primary care providers they never get to the guys dressed or psychologist so the variables can be very informative so you can see that the percentage you are reporting 15 or more days of portal health from the past month any percent that's a lot of people and the thing on the other other the flip of the coin you can see the percentage who have talked with family or friends almost daily and we're learning that social isolation is as bad for your health of smoking and so if that looks pretty good 78% have talked with family or friends home only so that that's pretty good the older adults and Branston seem to be actually engaged and depression thanks dear well it'd be thirty-one percent of the older adult relation has ever been diagnosed with depression so that that can be concerning and here the opportunities for intervention are broad because it doesn't have to be an anti depression intervention it could just be something that promotes social engagement and the full benefits could at her and help with mood or other problems that people have so a lot of room for improvement in terms the mental health outcomes and there's not a lot of work going on in this area so this this could be a really right barrier for people to start start making progress in I believe that there is another section with some data about people living with disabilities what efforts could help folks living with disabilities yeah that's good so that mean you can see and passion is quiz ease and then we get to the disability section and here we report on a number of disabling condition so hearing vision commission ambulance health care and independent living in this group I almost always like to look first at ambulatory difficulties because these can make the difference between someone living on their own or having to seek a different type of senior living situation and it cramped in this Cranston example you can see that it's one percent of the older adults report and inventory difficulties that are disabling so here the indication would be are there curb cuts are their benches where people could sit as they get out to walk are there sheltered bus stops are there things that make it easier for people if they have vittoria difficulties you know distance our crosswalks you know is there a have a spot where someone could rest if they were crossing a multi-lane road to get across is that I mean of stoplights does it take into consideration the percentage of the population that has a billet or e difficulties so they're out of things that can make a community more inclusive and more a friendly that would be suggested or things to think about depending on the disability indicators if we have folks a phone or Senior Center directors or service providers advise them to look for when they go to the immunity and pull up their profile here from the Senior Center directors they I mean they're interested in everything but the variables that have drawn a lot of attention for the next such a service utilization but coming down to these community variables and civic engagement the Rhode Island behavioral risk factor surveillance system had these cluster areas that are really interesting and so here you can see the first this is percentage 60-plus who believe that the local service organizations understand my needs and you're a service provider and a Senior Center council on aging is a service provider if your community has you know if the people in your community feel that you don't understand their needs that you wake up call that some things need to change or improve so you can see increased and it's worse than the state only thirty-eight percent of the older people in that area feel like their service organizations would understand their needs more positive indicators and these are things that if you're trying to build a volunteer store to life to your program some advocacy these next ones are very informative to the presenta people who believe he can make a difference and the person who believes that working together we can make a difference and so that a lot of potential social capital that you could build as you try to make your area more age friendly and inclusive you can see volunteering rate and so in Cranston percent and so there's a lot of improvement if you could get that up to thirty percent or forty percent there would be benefits for the older adult and certainly tremendous assets for the organizations that gown from the volunteers M&C decided to attend community events church club and so forth at least monthly and can be informative for people in the faith community that are trying to broaden their reach and services for older adults so for the Senior Center people these variables or indicators seem to be very important as well as those we looked at on the first page for the h the numbers of people that are in your area and the distribution of that in terms of our they yell old older among the oldest old those seem to be the ones that really are key piece for directors as you know they apply for grants or submit reports to their element supervisor and final question before we leave the community profiles for now what if someone is asked specifically develop programs for a vulnerable population yeah it good question thank you so this next session such as safety and transportation so you can see crime rates and fatal crashes alternative transportation programs that are available for the community and then dipping on how the Honorable population is defined very often it's related to pika factors and with that I tend to look at the percentage with income below the poverty level and maybe a group that are targeted or the percentage that are receiving food stamps if it's a Tricia and diet program and or it can also be back on page one a paleta the percentage that again depending how you define it it may be people who live loan are part of the vulnerable group or that next cater the percentage of the population who speak only in at home that very tortured way to try and get it non-primary english-speaking families who may be services that are delivered in another language or we can emission available in other languages so with this if there's a percentage of the older population who own speaks english at home that means that another language is probably their primary language and would be a group that you'd want to talk more about what do they need to they need jurors or information of programming on that languages and it would be potentially a vulnerable group to look at it most in the kannada collier chintu was just added to the cost of living and this is the elder economic urity standard index in this calculates a ratio for what it costs to live in a particular area if it's left on it it's got expensive than the state average and if it's more than one it's an expensive than a bear from the field or adult spending down resources especially if they're in a high expense so community that's like 1.4 1.5 a caustic a lid there and that can cause older adults to burn through their resources so that they then related to this poverty level and food stamps area so it's something to keep an eye on in terms of what's defense of your community or your accounting intern stimulation for the state and how does that correspond with the poverty that you're seeing among the older whether them the quick version the overview of the community profile but you'll see there's a lot air and you could just spend time reading and thinking about the rates that you see at the community level and the state level and it is up with your experiences and the assets and services that are in place and what are things that may be indicated based on what you see in the data and what you know with your experience one other thing let me just show one more thing if i have the community profiles with the confidence intervals and again this is for data people if you let me just pull up will show you and with these are indicators seminar to the assessment engine of error in the state estimate and the monomeric times when people are presenting data or sharing information you may encounter a skeptic or if the data person and you want to use these date for other now sees you need to know the movie or the confidence interval and I'll can interpret these if you're not a statistician just quickly any way is a statistical estimates and within that estimate there's an affair and so within this murder we're confident that the actual or true rate falls within and so you can see the margin of error for what's the gbt is go ahead and wide margin because that that data was sparsely reported but we'll get to what has a lot but let's look at the chronic diseases so here for instance the percentage that have alzheimers disease are related to mention so you can see the community estimate is 14.3 Energon Taveras 12.7 to 15.9 so were confident and quite confident that the true score true rate falls within that range and so if you're using the data and other analyses you need to know what that it some so it acts you know work or if you have a colleague that's a real data person they they will want to look at this the confidence interval okay thank you to switch back to marlowes screen so that we can zoom the presentation like nology works with us this is this slide is just a summary of the things we went over there are 41 unity profiles that contain 120 indicators reporting for the community and state level in addition there are the 20 zip code level profiles with the zip code community and state right 18 active web map one hungary PDF maps bar charts one painful graphic the highlights reported from the technical report in the community profiles with a confidence interval I want to recognize the input contributions and a partnership of my research collaborators Frank Parral and Nina silverstein and for in particular the special recognition because he leads the quantitative work in our core and he likes to tell people I keep him chained to his computer in the basement running analyses but as a very thoughtful hard-working collaborator as is Nina assisted in this work by umber of outstanding PhD gerontology students chief of who is Jay manly will be training the spring it will recognize the financial support of the Tufts health plan foundation we couldn't do this work without their investment we're just grateful to dinner ongoing partnership next okay take aways I hope your with that healthy aging is important given the demos of transformation that we're living and we need a friendly community is like never before what is not as healthy as it could be there's room to improve and it's about new tools that can help you network insight that I hope you bookmark and make your home page healthy aging data reports org and I start to connect with others in your community fun winnable bad battles and celebrate success and keep going in this work next something that we've heard from a lot of folks when they first see the immunity profile or the data report they want some specific examples they say you know what does this look like in action so we thought that we would share a couple of examples from our friends in Massachusetts the healthy age 80 data report from Massachusetts was produced a couple of years ago so they've had a little bit of time to put the data to work for them the first example is from Newton Massachusetts which is a fairly large city it's inside 128 of a Boston suburb and they have used this data in a variety of ways a strong Council on Aging in Place and they use the data to inform the strategic planning to make the Council on Aging more responsive to the community they also had been discussing applying to the World Health Organization's age friendly community program and the application for that requires a great deal of specific information and they didn't have to go out and do additional research because they were able to find the data in the report well that I think is really significant is that there was a budget implication where the the data was actually very helpful to the folks in the city of New when the city was taking a look at how its social services programs were funded and supported there was thought of reducing or eliminating one full-time or under one half time position for a social worker and because the folks who had been with the data report and with the council's on Aging had been looking at their community profile they were able to go back and look at it more closely and identified that there were higher rates of depression in the city than other places in the state they brought information to the attention of the folks doing the budgeting and making those visions about how to reorganize the Social Services program and they preserved that social worker position I certainly having a specific impian made that conversation smoother and easier even though I'm sure that many of the folks working in the field had a sense that that was the case actually had something coming to back them up and then the other example that I think is also a really wonderful reflection how having data can empower you it that you know like many communities there was a gap and senior housing available in the city of Newton and proposed development a proposed housing development was under discussion and the folks who had been doing the work with the data report were able to accept because they saw had aligned with the community needs Oh a number of different programs that were already in place a number of different partners involved some of them maybe not the folks that you would expect to be working on traditional senior issues you know there was planning there was zoning there were other departments in the city but they were all encouraged to look at what they went through an age-friendly lens are all able to benefit from having full hard data to help employer decisions no please and sample is from the far western edge of the state out in the Berkshires and so there are 32 cities and towns in Berkshire County and when the data report came out it would catalyst for conversations that may have happened anyway but it certainly spurred the discussion on and folks identify that they were grappling with some very similar issues and they also identified the opportunity to think differently about how they did their work that they could perhaps have more impact or save me or allocate their resources in a different way if they worked together so a new ashiya was formed for Age Friendly Berkshires and we're together all the folks who are working in 32 cities and towns it's very diverse group of people includes business leaders municipal leaders from various cities and towns it includes service providers that includes older adults themselves the variety of issues from housing to transportation to entities that would engage older adults more in their community they have very successful at getting buzz throughout the adult community and beyond they found sponsors countywide events they've actually had the Secretary of Elder affairs out to meet with folks in their community so they took a different tack they came together and and the data report was the impetus for us that coming together and creating this different due process and different formats we're working together and but in particular has been really in sharing her success with other folks throughout the state and helping them things different without how they can and together and achieve impact in the community next please so we think moving forward we incurred all of you who have joined us today to think about the people that you work with to think about what you're seeing in your community and to identify the issues that sense for your community it's gonna be different you know the community files will probably have some common threads but you know there will be some opportunity to jump out for your community so identify the issues that you want to start with I think what reaches are available to you do you have see Center do you have folks in the community are already organized you have a particularly strong volunteer engagement component in your community is the university nearby where I'll intelligent grammar see some of the other schools may have programs may have students who available to help you for this with this work think about not only the resources that would traditionally be applied to other services in your community but think more broadly one sense of issues and your input then think of what your action steps need to be you need to reach what would you there I know identify your audience and again thank you will include older adults but it may may include some other folks that wouldn't usually be on your list so that any of the cities and towns in Massachusetts and are thinking about action steps folks from municipal planning and planning departments have been part of those conversations because they be the folks who can help with what's down the pike and what might need change in terms of community planning to accommodate the growing population of older adults play as that said earlier records that this is long-term change but there be some short-term opportunities it's great to be able to celebrate a win so think about with a reasonable initial and and think about what a map for how you're going to achieve the longer-term outcomes as well there are some that will build on to other there are some that will complement each other so so think about the organizing framework so that you can took resources of your community in the way that's most successful for you and all of your neighbors moving forward I it just helps you to think about timing of the desired outcomes so that outcomes but you'd like to see soon with what other one now soon and evenly is sort of how I think about it and there may be the initial Chism a knowledge base that you want to achieve you want people have known as greater awareness or to be more motivated water maybe actual changes in behavior do you increase activity or the eating of fruits and vegetables or getting loose the practices policies and procedures and then long-term what what imagine in a friend with the community what does it look like in the long term macro changes that you'd like to see actually helps your community be one that make healthy aging a priority thanks so then you for your participation and your interest and your partnership and let's work together we are making healthy aging a priority in Rhode Island our hope is that Rhode Island in turn can be a model for the nation next great at this point if you have questions that you've sent in or thoughts should be the time that we'd want to engage I have a couple of questions here but before I ask the first one I do want to invite participants to look at that chat window in the bottom right corner of their screen and if any has come to them as you've been going through the pre patient and please do your thoughts please share your questions we'll get started with what we've all got in the queue but we do have some time so I we condition no question a question is to be a part of this work right stuff so with that there's the usual suspects that we're open to be involved in in our work so there's the Senior Center and the aging service people and the Alzheimer's Association and AARP but with this we're aiming for is basically a reengineering of society that becomes more friendly you know that it's poised to older adults to have meaningful roles and contribute in meaningful ways and also supports us as we get older and so that's a big work and so it may be that there are you know not the usual suspects that you know endless so maybe the first responders maybe the mayor's office may maybe the planning department the business all business or what large business rotary has some interesting programs there you shouldn't minute by the usual cast of characters that we were been to gauging activities but figuratively about who could be potential ally and as we make this you know because remember what was for the oldest of us works with it where the youngest works for everyone in between and so it's not that well pitting one duration against the other that it's some special interest group but it's actually good for the entire community as we become more inland healthier also think creatively about the people that you enlist to work with you I don't know if you have any other thoughts on that I think that's really good advice and I do know that in some of the bigger cities particularly Boston that they have found that every single to print has to do their own strategic planning process and some of the folks who are working on age friendly Boston had introduced themselves up to the planners for various department so they be transportation or parks and recreation or you never other department and encourage them to think about the aging population as they do their work to your point set a curb cut that will work for somebody who's older who might need a walker is also going to be very helpful to a parent with a stroller so think of those the way your work can help others do a better job with the distinction work please we would encourage you to too many folks beyond just the usual circle the question to the importance of offering volunteer programs I have actually heard you in the past best refer to volunteering as a silver bullet but this is you know how does the desk support the importance of bring volunteers can can we pull anything out there that can help us show our house leagues why it's so important to do this number of texts that one could take you cheering help the organization that's been listed by the volunteers so there's man pehle per hour benefit accrues to the ATO group that is served by the volunteer and there are benefits that accrue to the volunteer so it's a chance to the volunteer activities involve some social active which has positive mood and health benefits and then there's the physical tasks of getting to the volunteer site or doing whatever the volunteer tasks are so the puzzles like physical activities are best Fountain of Youth right now and volunteerism appears to be a close second so if you can find fine to promote physical activity in promote volunteerism you're going to see benefits for the interior and at the puppet level as this becomes more widespread will be on games in population health as well yeah so I have a question here about that you as you were analyzing the data specifically around gender differences questions our advisory board and remember people who had served on action on the status of older women in rota so he asks us to do some analyses or connect and interesting ones that we saw overall older women and I'll intended to have higher rates of less areas chronic condition and men had higher rates of the serious chronic conditions like heart disease diabetes and hypertension and so on so there were it was a difference in the health profile that we had served and rhythms of health behaviors or health practices we saw differences as well older women were more likely to socially engaged and have at social support had knocked a family in from past day or past week and to eat a healthy diet so we saw older women were morally to demonstrate those health behaviors and older them more likely to have ethical activity in the past and to get the CDC preventive screenings the recommended screenings it's like assembling measure of all the street to get per year so that what it's surprising because in most of the literature a shield or women tend to have better health screening behavior than older men and yeah in Rhode Island it was swiped older webber so those were some interesting tricks that we saw in regard to gender and thus summarized in the highlights report in case any of the participants want additional information so that was the last question that has been submitted to the chat we do have some available so folks have additional questions I encourage you to submit them through the chat box now I'll get couple of minutes and I'll take this opportunity to reinforce that that message of thanks to the Rhode Island healthy aging data rep rt Advisory Council we really did have a wonderful group folks from the community who shared their wisdom their experience their ideas and really asked wonderful questions that put us to deliver a better product in the end they want to thank Beth and her team for all the work that they did to slice and dice and put these maps together and all these resources together it does not look like we are getting additional questions on the line so i think what i will do is encourage you all to take this time to visit healthy aging data reports org and go to your own community profile and start exploring we hopefully have to meet you the next tour in Rhode Island and we encourage you to contact us to ask any question that might arise as you're doing your work the meantime thank you for joining us today and thank you for all you do to work to make communities in Rhode Island more livable for older adults and more vibrant and better places for everyone you

Frequently asked questions

Learn everything you need to know to use airSlate SignNow eSignatures like a pro.

How do you make a document that has an electronic signature?

How do you make this information that was not in a digital format a computer-readable document for the user? " "So the question is not only how can you get to an individual from an individual, but how can you get to an individual with a group of individuals. How do you get from one location and say let's go to this location and say let's go to that location. How do you get from, you know, some of the more traditional forms of information that you are used to seeing in a document or other forms. The ability to do that in a digital medium has been a huge challenge. I think we've done it, but there's some work that we have to do on the security side of that. And of course, there's the question of how do you protect it from being read by people that you're not intending to be able to actually read it? " When asked to describe what he means by a "user-centric" approach to security, Bensley responds that "you're still in a situation where you are still talking about a lot of the security that is done by individuals, but we've done a very good job of making it a user-centric process. You're not going to be able to create a document or something on your own that you can give to an individual. You can't just open and copy over and then give it to somebody else. You still have to do the work of the document being created in the first place and the work of the document being delivered in a secure manner."
