Is fax becoming obsolete?
Is fax becoming obsolete? Yes. Is it considered obsolete? Probably by most people. Is it obsolete? Not completely so for all purposes. While the number of faxes most businesses receive or send would now be in single figures in any given month, you will sometimes, for example, find a contract which provides for notices to be given by letter, delivery or fax - but not provide for electronic delivery. If you want to deliver the notice instantly and the recipient isn’t in the same town, fax is the obvious choice for delivering your notice.A favourite story - in late 1984, at the end of my first year of work, I bumped into a former university colleague who said she was working on a legal case overseas. To my comment that that would pose various logistical issues she said they had this new machine which was like a photocopier attached to a phone line - you put a document on the copier at this end and a copy of it came out at the end. I replied that that sounded great, but surely it would never catch on as that would require everyone to have one of these machines. It took about 2 more years before businesses got far more faxes than they did hard copy letters. Moral of the story - don’t ask me about new technology!

What industries must use electronic signature software?
Any industry involving a large amount of paperwork make use electronic signatures. In other words, all industries make use of electronic signatures because all of them have piles of paperwork to handle. Some examples of such industries include financial, life science, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.Industries such as the pharmaceutical industry, have a number of licenses and other paperwork that they have to handle and keep track of. It can be a tedious task to perform such cumbersome paper processes. Therefore, e-signatures can facilitate an organisation in keeping a track of all this paperwork, by signing electronically.Healthcare industries usually involve time-sensitive documents, which need to be urgently completed. But, it can take days in case of the traditional wet ink paper signatures for the documents to signNow the signer and back, if the parties are geographically scattered. But with electronic signatures, that is not the case. Geographical barriers do not play a role. Documents which earlier needed days to be completed, can now be signed and sent back within minutes, in the click of a button. Furthermore, it takes a long time to bring assets under management. The time taken by the signing process, if wet ink paper signatures are used, may even further delay the process. But by using electronic signatures, the whole process can speed up.Apart from these, there are many paper prone industries which require huge amount of paperwork and with the use of electronic signatures they can make their everyday processes smoother and more efficient.

Can we file tax return in India for previous years? If yes, then for upto how many years can we do so and what is the procedure
Yes, but only of 1 previous year. You have to file your income tax return within the due date of 31st July (Non Audit Assessee) / 30th Sep (Audit Assessee). But if returns have not been filed before due date, you can still file a belated return any time before the expiry of 2 years from the end of the financial year. So, if you want to file a return now, you can only file for F.Y. 2012-13 and F.Y. 2013-14If you are not well versed with the Income Tax Laws, then it is advisable to file your income tax return through a Chartered Accountant or Tax Consultant to avoid any mistake. If you are going to file it yourself, then following is the procedure:-Before you start the process, keep your bank statements, Form 16 issued by your employer and a copy of last year's return at hand. Next, log on to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Follow these steps:Step 1: Register yourself on the website. Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) will be your user ID.Step 2: View your tax credit statement — Form 26AS — for the financial year 2012-13 . The statement will reflect the taxes deducted by your employer actually deposited with the I-T department. The TDS as per your Form 16 must tally with the figures in Form 26AS. If you file the return despite discrepancies, if any, you could get a notice from the I-T department later.Step 3: Under the 'Download' menu, click on Income Tax Return Forms and choose AY 2013-14 (for financial year 2012-13 ). Download the Income Tax Return (ITR) form applicable to you. If your exempt income exceeds Rs 5,000, the appropriate form will be ITR-2 . If the applicable form is ITR-1 or ITR 4S, you can complete the process on the portal itself, by using the 'Quick e-file ITR' link.Step 4: Open the downloaded Return Preparation Software (excel utility) and complete the form by entering all the details , using your Form 16.Step 5: Ascertain the tax payable by clicking the 'Calculate Tax' tab. Pay tax (if applicable) and enter the challan details in the tax return.Step 6: Confirm all the information in the worksheet by clicking the 'Validate' tab.Step 7: Proceed to generate an XML file and save it on your computer.Step 8: Go to 'Upload Return' on the portal's left panel and upload the saved XML file after selecting 'AY 2013-2014 ' and the relevant form. You will be asked whether you wish to digitally sign the file. If you have obtained a DS (digital signature), select Yes. Or, choose 'No'.Step 9: Once the website flashes the message about successful e-filing on your screen, you can consider the process to be complete. The acknowledgment form — ITR—Verification (ITR-V ) will be generated and you can download it.Step 10: Take a printout of the form ITR-V , sign it preferably in blue ink, and send it only by ordinary or Speed post to the Income-Tax Department-CPC , Post Bag No-1 , Electronic City Post Office, Bangalore - 560 100, Karnataka, within 120 days of filing your return online.

Has anybody applied for learning or driving license online, how is the process for the same?
Based on my own experience of getting the Driving license for Geared two wheeler on myself with no bribe/brokers, I can say the process of getting driving license in Bangalore, Karnataka can be divided into two stages.Stage 1 : Apply for Learner’s License (LLR)Visit the Sarathi website and select the New Learners license under Apply online drop down menu. Fill in all the required details, upload signature and photograph, upload required proofs, book slot, make payment (FYI the payment can also be done at the respective RTO) and visit the applied RTO on the slot date with the printed application form, xerox copies of the proofs(FYI I have submitted my rental agreement + Electricity bill for residence proof, Aadhaar card for Id proof, Birth Certificate for DOB proof) along with the originals for verification. The computer operator will verify the documents and start your test. The test contains the questions on basic traffic signs. Once passed, After 3 days, the RTO authorities would upload the Learner’s license to the sarathi website for you application number. You may take the print out of you Learner’s License. The approximate cost would be around 250 INR.Stage 2: Apply for Driving License (DL)Step 1:Once you complete 30 days after Learner license approval, you can again visit the Sarathi website and select the New Driving license under Apply online drop down menu. Fill in all the required details, book slot, make payment (FYI the payment can also be done at the respective RTO).Step 2:Visit the applied RTO on the slot date with the application print outs along with the documents of the vehicle you take for the driving test. You need to staple the Chalaan payment bill with Application form, Learner’s license printout, Slot booking appointment printout, vehicle documents, Stamped Postal cover with the delivery address written on it (This is used to send your DL through post. Usually you can get it in the shops near RTO offices). Once verified you will be directed to take the bio-metrics followed by the DL test(I was asked to go straight, take a U turn and come back which I did giving the vehicle and hand signals. In case of the RTOs having separate track installed, the test might vary). Once passed, you will be asked to sign in the DL register and be informed the DL will be dispatched through post within 20 days. If in case you have not received the driving license in 20 days, you may enquire the RTO with the application number. The estimated cost would be around 750 INR for geared two wheeler license.Note: This is as per my experience at the Electronic City RTO, Bangalore, Karnataka.Hope this helps. Thank you :)
