What is so special about the music of Radiohead?
Personally speaking, Radiohead is a VERY big deal. It has helped me get through 2 years of college and will play a pivotal role in the next 2 as well.So why are they so brilliant? What is so special about them? Firstly, their entire discography spans different genres of music. For example, if I am in a mood to listen to some British alt rock, something in the vein of Franz Ferdinand, I just put on Pablo Honey. If I am in the mood for some dense experimental rock, King of Limbs gives me some chow for the mind. In Rainbows is for lovers of easy listening indie/electronic music or alt rock, whichever way you put it. Them lyrics. Most of their songs talk about love or that desperate need to connect with that one special person or thing. Ok Computer talks about modern dystopian culture and alienation. Every album is a result of the prevailing conditions of that time or quite simply what's on Thom's mind.Instrumental skill. Thom Yorke knows no equal with his amazing vocal range and his rhythm guitars. Especially his falsettos. Jonny Greenwood is one of the most creative and brilliant guitarists I've ever listened to. His use of the Ondes Martenot to add that extra depth and resonant quality to a song is exceptional. Phil Selway and his unusual time signatures and precise drumming is excellent. Colin Greenwood is very good on the bass while Ed O' Brien while responsible for the rhythm guitars and backing vocals (brilliant), also comes up with the "weird sounds" which are so representative of Radiohead's tracks. For example, the intro for Lucky.Live performances. Jools Holland, Glastonbury and From The Basement. Better than the studio recorded versions sometimes. There There and Optimistic being two prime examples of such tracks.There is something about Radiohead which keeps surprising you, elevating your expectations. You would have thought that they had signNowed the absolute zenith with Ok Computer but then they come up with Kid A and In Rainbows ( no disrespect to Hail To The Thief and Amnesiac, they are both great records) and you just can't get a grip on yourself then. It is an education in music and variation. No band in the world compels you to think in such a way. You are always confused and on the edge whenever they come with a new album. Like, right now. Last and most certainly not the least, the emotional involvement. Melancholy, sadness, euphoria, relief, anger- all these emotions are incorporated so beautifully within those 4 odd minutes of music. When it comes to this aspect, they have no equal. The manner in which Thom performs as evident from his live performances is reflective of this feeling. I can go on endlessly about them. Actually I can't. Words cannot even begin to describe why they are that good. Thank you, Radiohead.
