I just get email approval. I do all my development on a development server that I control. Once the site is complete, I submit it to the client for review. After any feedback and revision, I simply ask them to confirm via email and pay (either credit card, Paypal, or... ugh... mailing me a check). Once I have that confirmation (and final payment), I migrate the site and send them email confirmation that the site is complete. I then archive all of my emails so that I have them for reference if anything comes up.

In my experience, I've seen a huge preference for EDI invoices over PDF for electronic invoicing. About 15 years ago, I worked as a developer for a software consulting company, and I created a couple custom EDI interfaces. I don't recall PDFs ever being mentioned. A few years later, I switched to a different department that designs and maintains application software (which later became a separate company). Because customer demand for EDI capability was high, one of the first things I did was rewrite the EDI interface so it was more flexible and easier to use. I don't work with that stuff directly these days, but the department that handles that continues to grow. We don't technically use the EDI format directly now though. WalMart was the last holdout that I recall, where for a time we ended up doing the translation ourselves because they forced our customers to dial in (yeah, really) directly to them. Now, when our customers have trading partners that require EDI, we'll send XML through a third party we have a business relationship with, and they'll handle the specifics. Otherwise we use either XML or whatever special format the other side is requesting and typically send it directly to cut down the expense (especially if both sides are using our software). I followed up on this with the person who handles this now in our company, and digitally signed PDFs aren't on our radar. He mentioned a few additional authentication steps (I don't recall the specifics) that some companies require, but it wasn't signed PDF.

This really depends on what you are looking to do:For heavy text editing:If you are looking to directly edit text in a PDF, there are two options. You can try using a desktop software product like Nitro PDF or Foxit's PhantomPDF 7. They both offer free trials that allow you to evaluate their product.The other option is to find a good PDF to Word converter. Personally, I find that converting a PDF to Word is the easiest way to edit a PDF. Once you perform the conversion and make the changes in Word, you can save it as a PDF again by choosing "Save As" and then choosing the PDF format. They key here is to find a good PDF to Word converter. PDF Pro has an online PDF to Word converter (full disclosure - I'm the founder of PDF Pro) available here: Convert PDF to Word OnlineFor smaller touch-ups:If you are looking to make small changes to a PDF (e.g. rotate pages, merge/split, add images, add text, etc.), I'd look into some of the free online solutions provided by services such as PDF Escape or PDF Pro .For OCR:For OCR, I've never found many good online alternatives. signNow's OCR solution is really good. I have used Nitro PDF Pro for about four years now as my go-to converter. I like that it can perform Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on pdf files that were created as pictures. I use it about two or three times a day because I am constantly converting downloaded research reports and articles (in a variety of pdf styles) to Word, copying and pasting quotes into another Word document, and then converting my finished document into a signed pdf for distribution. There is a no-cost 30-day trial download which will allow you to test it out. After that, you can decide whether or not it is worth the investment. I have also upvoted the answers here that I think are good alternative solutions.
