I was actually thinking about this the other day. One of my best friends is finishing up his medical school this year, and I happened to ponder his future. As it becomes automated, it will actually become a lot better, and A LOT cheaper. For one thing, preventative medicine will become king. The days of waiting 45 minutes to see the doctor so they can give you one look and write you a prescription will become history as automated diagnosis becomes more accurate than the average doctor's judgement. Medical data science will get there, even if it takes a decade or two.One could argue, "Why would your friend become a doctor when there's clearly a bubble in medicine?" or maybe, "Why would your friend become a doctor when they (national medical board) clearly create a false scarcity of doctors by limiting the amount of Medical school entrants each year? It's bound to eventually level itself out now that the government has a large hand in paying the doctor's rates."Maybe it's true, who knows. This same type of technological disruption is happening in many other industries as well. It's already happened/happening to retail, banking, stock trading, architectural design (cad), film, music, and so on.But, the bigger question is who will be driving future innovation behind those items which are disrupting all these classical markets? I was hired by a family owned parts supply company after I called and inquired about work. I was put through to the owner, and he asked me to come right in after speaking to me. After seeing me, he offered me a job and I started the next day. I was extremely grateful for the position, and did very well right away.After a few months on the job, I went out to lunch with a customer, who in turn invited two other technicians. During lunch, one of the friends boasted about the scheme he had in place with my manager in Spanish, thinking I would not understand. I was fluent in Spanish, and I caught on that he and others would request to have the manager help them personally, would tell him what they needed, and he would write it up on a quote sheet, and proceed to hand them the requested items.This ran into the hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars of stolen merchandise daily, and they would pay the manager later for a fraction of the value of what they stole. The second I returned from lunch, the manager saw who I entered with, and he realized that I probably knew what he was doing. I could see it in his eyes.That week, he tried to send me home three times as if I wasn’t needed (I was supposed to work 40 hours per week), or I had done something wrong, and tried to write me up for trivial nonsense. FizzBuzz is a stupid question that got way too popular. It's an interview question that turned into a meme, essentially. Before you ask this, or any question, you need to first understand what you're looking for. In this case, are you asking it as a sanity check (i.e., are you remotely competent?) or as an evaluative question (i.e., how good are you at ___?). I've done hundreds of programming interviews, lots of interview coaching, and lots of hiring consulting. This question is just not good.You might not need to sanity check.This question became popularized as a sanity check. But do you really need to sanity check?If I were hiring people to stock a room and they needed to lift 100 lbs, I'd test them with 100 lbs weights. I wouldn't give them 20 lbs weights for a "sanity check". That's a waste of both people's time. Maybe you can offer a little wiggle room on the bar, because people can be trained. But you don't necessarily need to set a low initial bar. It's okay if you can't distinguish between the bad and really bad people. You're going to reject them both eventually.It's not a good sanity check.The problem with FizzBuzz is that it looks like there's something "interesting" to the algorithm. After all, it can't just be a coincidence that 3 means Fizz, 5 means Buzz, and 3 and 5 mean the concatenation of Fizz and Buzz.A smart person who values a great solution will chase that "interesting" solution, which doesn't really exist (see the answer -- and the ridiculous number of comments: Gayle Laakmann McDowell's answer to Are there really programmers with computer science degrees who cannot pass the FizzBuzz test?). That it tells you something about the candidate's ability to write readable, optimal, or extensible code. That does matter -- I agree.But FizzBuzz isn't a good way to do this. The differences in optimality, extensibility, and readability are so minor that it depends a lot on your assumptions and your interpretation of the problem.Approach A:if i % 3 == 0 and i % 5 == 0: print "FizzBuzz" else if i % 3 == 0: print "Fizz" else if i % 5 == 0: print "Buzz" else: print i Approach B:s = "" if i % 3 == 0: s = "Fizz" if i % 5 == 0: s += "Buzz" if s == "": s = str(i) print s Personally, I find approach A to be both more readability and extensible. After all, if you change the requirement to "print Foo when i is divisible by 3 and 5", then it's easy to update the code. And, it is most clearly maps to the problem statement, in my opinion.Others though argue that approach B is better. If you added additional requirements (print Foo if it's divisibly by 7), it'd be easier to update this. Also, it shows a "3 maps to Fizz and 5 maps to Buzz" logic.I disagree on the readability and extensibility of approach B, but those people aren't wrong. They're just looking at the problem from a different but equally valid perspective. If you envision the problem as being a sequence of "divisibility by N -> print S" requirements, then approach B is maybe better. But if you envision it as possibly a coincidence that there's a relationship between the string for {3 and 5} and the string for each, then approach A is possibly better.How I interpret minor little wording things tells you nothing about my ability to write extensible, readable, optimal code. Connecting these things feels like an ink blot test to me. Tell me, what do you see? Do you see optimal code?Maybe you can learn something about me out of the discussion of different approaches. Fine. But you're probably not going to look at my approach with an open mind, and if you're really looking for optimality and readability and extensibility, ask a much more complex question.There are so many better questions.FizzBuzz is not the worst question ever. It's just not a good question. It doesn't serve well as a sanity check (you might actually reject your best people) and it doesn't serve well to look at more important factors.Want one that does both?Given a group of people with their birth years and death years, find the year with the highest population.It's a sanity check. If someone can't come up with any solution to this problem, that's a bad sign. You can reject the clear no's.But, it's more than a sanity check! You can also develop solutions which are more optimal. The code is a bit more interesting -- not super difficult, but considerably more interesting than a for loop with basic mod checks. Plus, this is a really overdone question. When candidates hear this, you'll be sending a powerful signal -- much more powerful than the signal from their performance -- that you couldn't come up with or find a more interesting question. You're just repeating this question because you heard somewhere that it's a good question.It's not.

One that is skewed to often benefit an individual with darker, selfish motives.Many people will share that secretive phone behaviors, more frequent late nights at the office or unusual schedule changes may be clues.Could be.What seems to be a much better indicator of detecting cheating is WHAT YOU are FEELING and EXPERIENCING.Though not all Narcissists cheat, in my groups, coaching practice and teaching, I would say that the topic of cheating and deception seems to cause the most distress and curiosity. Especially to those who believe they may be involved with a high-level or Malignant Narcissist.To help you sort through your question, time and time again the following emotional red flags seem to be universal. Meaning if you see these signs, it doesn’t confirm cheating, but it is more likely than not.•Your intuition.If you feel strongly that something doesn’t feel right, it’s not. You may not be able to pinpoint exactly what is going on, it may not be as bad as you fear, but if there is a nagging doubt that is causing you uneasiness,Pay attention to this and seek deeper answers. Ask yourself are you often put in a position to feel insecure or in competition? Again, it doesn’t confirm anything but this sadistic type of behavior can be a sign.•Confusion and Dichotomies.Again, this doesn’t necessarily confirm betrayal, but an individual who cares, respects, loves, is not going to purposely design a relationship of harm. When someone has your best interest at heart, their intentions are for your higher good. Psychologically toying with someone’s emotions, being conditionally kind and then cold or cruel,hiding information that could be detrimental to your life is abusive and insidious. If it feels unreasonable, wrong, unfair, duplicitous, disengenious or strange, take it at face value. Individuals who indulge in these behaviors are more likely to betray and lie.•Devaluation IncreasesDevaluation runs on a continuum and even good, decent individuals may have infrequent moments of anger or skewed judgment at another. Having said that, when a Narcissist or Psychopathic individual feels threatened, thwarted or bored by a partner, they will increase their devaluation of you. This is often implimented for various gains - to punish, malign, get even, stabilize their control and buy time for other activities and interests. Extremely malevolent individuals may enjoy pulling the wool over your eyes believing you deserve it for not bending to their wishes. By making you feel unworthy, humiliated, small, insecure or needy, it reinforces their insatiable need for power and winning.•Observing an Inability for Affective Empathy, Lack of Bonding and Low Conscience.An individual who is incapable of healthy love and self awareness, will tend to play mind games, gaslight, manipulate, have little compassion, and do things to shock and hurt when they are angry or disappointed. They often create an environment of antagonism, malevolence, anxiety and fear with their immature and callous behaviors.This maybe seen throughout a relationship with tender, passionate moments thrown in the mix. An individual capable of harm, is capable and more likely to betray.Remember: There are dozens of signs, words, secrets, behaviors, omissions that could spell betrayal.
