Who are the news organizations polling when they show statistics regarding election? I am 49 years old and I have never been pol
It varies from pollster to pollster, but usually pollsters get their sampling frame (the actual universe of people from which they’re able to draw their sample) from one of three sources:They use random digit dialing, in which they create their sample by randomly generating a bunch of ten-digit numbers and calling them. Pollsters who are interested in particular states can restrict this to valid area codes for that state—for example, a pollster who wants to survey New Hampshire will generate seven-digit numbers and add a 603 before dialing, since that’s the New Hampshire area code. They draw a random sample of voters from a voter file, a list of registered voters. Voter registration forms require you to give a phone number, so private companies like L2 compile voter data and will sell it to interested parties. They draw a sample of voters from an online panel. Scientific Internet pollsters like YouGov and SurveyMonkey recruit people to join their panels; when they conduct a political poll they draw a representative sample from their panel.Obviously, if you’re not signed up with any Internet pollsters, option 3 is off the table. But you’re still signNowable by phone through either method 1 or method 2. (Edit per Edward Conway: apparently your phone number is optional on the National Voter Registration Application Form, although I believe this varies by state, and voter files can still have your phone number if they link it to your home address.) The reason you’re not signNowed is that any one person’s chances of being signNowed by a pollster are small. A poll doesn’t need to get a big chunk of the electorate to get a reasonable degree of precision; in fact, for a large enough population the margin of error on a poll depends only on the sample size and not what proportion of the population that sample accounts for. It’s like tasting soup—you don’t need to drink half of it to see whether it’s done; if you’ve stirred the pot enough, one spoonful is enough to tell you about the entire pot. Also, if you have a habit of ignoring calls from phone numbers you don’t recognize, you may have been contacted by a pollster anyway, and you just didn’t realize it.

What sort of person chooses to be a prison guard?
Although I think most sign on initially because they want to be helpful in some way, at some point they start to become jaded. There is much abuse of prisoners going on in these prisons. See, e.g. News > WorldStaged fights, betting guards, gunfire and death for the gladiatorsUS jail brutality: 'Cockfights' and shootings investigated by FBITIM CORNWELL Los AngelesThursday 22 August 1996 00:02Click to followThe IndependentViolent inmates at California's top maximum-security jail were paired off in staged fights as watching prison guards bet on the outcomes, the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday. In some cases, prisoners who refused to stop fighting were shot dead. In a ritual that became known as "gladiator days", known enemies at Corcoran State Prison were released from their cells and paired off like fighting cocks in empty prison yards. The fights became such events that officers of other units were called as spectators. The chief witnesses to the brutality at Corcoran, built in 1988 as a hi-tech security jail and whose 5,500 inmates include the cult leader and murderer Charles Manson and Robert Kennedy's assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, were a group of prison officers who went to the FBI, the newspaper said. Agents of the FBI have been gathering evidence for about a year and a grand jury is investigating the shootings to see if a prosecution can be brought. We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view. From $0.18 a day, more exclusives, analysis and extras.Subscribe nowThe worst abuses were said to occur under the tenure of warden George Smith, who retired last July and was dubbed "Mushroom George" because "mushrooms like to be kept in the dark", one guard said. Mr Smith kept a picture of John Wayne in his office to project a tough image and turned a blind eye to his subordinates' tactics. Over a period of eight years seven inmates were shot dead at Corcoran, five in the 18 months after Mr Smith took over. More than 50 have been wounded, more than in any other prison in the United States. Gunfire rang out almost every day, and shootings were covered up, officers say.The disclosures from the prison, built in California's San Joaquin Valley, come against a drumbeat of demands for tougher treatment of prisoners in US jails. Most recently Bob Dole, in his speech accepting the Republican Party's nomination, promised to make life "hell" for violent criminals.Guards and inmates described macabre scenes in which prison officers gathered in control booths overlooking cramped exercise yards in advance of fights, which were sometimes delayed so that female guards and even prison secretaries could be present. The officers were armed with gas guns that fired wooden blocks, and rifles. The excuse for pairing off prisoners, often members of rival black and Latino gangs which exercise powerful control over the inmates, was an official policy of "integration". It mandated bringing long-time rivals together at close quarters in the hope that they would learn to live and let live. The policy was widely derided as a loser that forced inmates into fights and left officers with split-second decisions about life or death, and it has now been rescinded. But at Corcoran's Security Housing Unit (SHU), reserved for 1,800 problem inmates sent from other prisons, it was allegedly perverted into a system of staged brawls. Dimas de Leon, an SHU inmate from 1988 to 1990, claimed to have been involved in 11 staged fights in which his boxing skills made him a favourite."I was made aware by officers that there was money riding on me to win," he said in an affidavit. "I was even thanked by officers for making them a bit richer." But it was the killing of Preston Tate, a 25-year-old gang member from South Central Los Angeles, that persuaded several officers to become whistle-blowers. He died in April 1994 after officers opened fire in a section of the SHU known as the "shooting gallery".A videotape, which is now the basis of a law suit filed by his family, showed Tate, who was black, being charged by two Latino gang members and eventually being shot in the head as guards opened fire to break up the fight. An official report cleared the officers of wrongdoing. But Steve Rigg, a Corcoran lieutenant for six years and one of those co-operating with the FBI in a civil-rights investigation into the incident, became convinced the fight was rigged. Tate had recently been moved into a cell adjacent to his assailants, and in another tell-tale sign, a number of supervisors had gathered in the control booth. It was the second watch in the same building that is suspected of staging a series of "cockfights".In eight months in 1994, 85 fights broke out in the period from 6am to 2pm, by contrast with just eight fights in the third watch, overseen by Mr Rigg. "They wanted to create fights," he said. "I think they liked shooting at some of the troublemakers. They wanted to get their little ounce of revenge."In other incidents at Corcoran, a group of officers dubbed "the Sharks" organised reception parties for busloads of arriving prisoners who were pummelled and kicked. After an internal investigation, three senior officers were dismissed and five other lieutenants and sergeants were demoted or suspended. While a grand jury is investigating other incidents, the failings of the integration policy may help to protect officers from any criminal investigation, prosecutors say.You see, eventually they begin to become accepting and supportive of the status quo. They have a tendency to just go along with a bunch of sick sadistic shit just because that's the easiest way to go for them. And if they protect other cops that are that way they are no better in my opinion. They may not be “down” with that kind of treatment as it relates to prisoners, but if you stand by while your co-workers do a bunch of dirty shit (like put a bunch of different factions on the same yard together just so that they can lay back and gleefully watch the carnage ensue, or literally set guys up (like they just did a few month ago to a good old soldier named Hugo “Yogi” Pinell to be killed in New Folsom etc.), you're just as responsible as the next guy. I guess I'm a little biased since I did 29 years but I have seen a greater tendency toward sadism with many of these guards in the last few years I was in there. And at the opposite end of the spectrum the women guards in those places saved my life on more than one occasion!! These days those guards run those prisons in California and they have become like gang members themselves. I've even learned that these guys need validation (ironically, just like gang members) and, just like gang members everywhere, they have a pretty small and exclusive group. Everyone's not privy to their sick shit, but enough are that when the shit hits the fan they're gonna get caught up in it themselves because no one is gonna believe they didn't know what was going on.

I get very anxious in public and around people that I don't know. It seems to have gotten worse as I've gotten older, and I'm ab
I don't know from your question whether you have tried Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I won't launch into an exegesis of CBT, but it is the most robust and research-validated form of psychotherapy, and a lot of its design has to do with how to support you in changing the inner scripts and self-talk that you experience in the specific situations that cause distress. It differs to some degree from the classical therapeutic project of turning over the rocks in one's past memories and experience to look for root causes. Some of this work may be useful, but there is also some evidence that outcomes-oriented therapy focused on actions and behaviors in the future may be more successful. In fact, there is some evidence that backward-looking forms of therapy may have limited utility after a certain point, and may even be harmful in that they focus on causation rather than change processes. (This is not an either-or question, but rather a matter of balance.) Finally, one thing I have learned over time, since I do suffer from some forms of social anxiety as well as specific fears (like driving over bridges in the dark), is to avoid these contexts when I can, or at least minimize them, and also to prepare for them in advance using strategies that I have learned. I realized at a certain point in my life that I was never going to enjoy social events at which I had to interact with a lot of people I did not know, or knew only slightly--think holiday parties--and also that if I didn't like going to them, I didn't have to. And I don't think of this as a weakness--in fact, I see my inability to make easy banter and chit-chat with people I don't know as being a sign of an underlying strength. I don't know if this answer is useful. Drugs can definitely help, in a short-term sense--a lot of people now use Xanax for what they once used alcohol--but I'm not sure they are a long-term solution.

What is a provisioning profile on an iPhone?
The short answer is that this likely means that you participated in a beta test for an iOS application at some point, or otherwise received an iOS app directly from a developer rather than downloading it from the App Store.Provisioning Profiles are used by iOS Developers to effectively create an association between your device and that developer's account by providing the necessary code-signing certificates to allow you to run their apps. They are often installed automatically through services such as TestFlight or Hockey, but can also be sent out manually as part of an "ad hoc" application package. The profile is normally installed with the app. It's difficult to interpret what "MPPAdHocTM" means specifically, as developers can of course name their provisioning profiles whatever they'd like. It doesn't matter, however, as you can simply remove the profile in question. Even if you're still running the app that was associated with it, that app will be useless once the profile expires and you'd need to request an updated profile from the developer. More likely, however, you've long since stopped using the app (provisioning profiles are normally valid for one year), and the profile is simply lying around on your device needlessly. In addition to getting to this screen from the pop-up alert, the Provisioning Profiles can be accessed directly by going to Settings->General->Profiles.

Would Bernie Sanders have defeated Donald Trump? Would Bernie have been a more or less formidable candidate than Hillary?
Had Bernie Sanders been the nominee in 2016, he would have been utterly crushed and we would today be asking what-if questions about Clinton. The last Bernie-like candidate the Democratic Party nominated was George McGovern in 1972. He was as consistently liberal as Bernie, as outspoken against the elite as Bernie, and as popular among younger voters as Bernie. He ran a grassroots campaign relying on small donors, like Bernie. He opposed our involvement in wars, like Bernie. He lacked support from major wings of the Democratic Party, like Bernie. He was was even running against Richard Nixon, one of the least-charismatic Presidents we have ever had.Yet he lost, in what was then the second-biggest landslide in US history. He didn't even win California and New York.He was doomed by the facts that his own party was fractured, and that his views on war and the economy were far to the left of the majority of Americans. So about 2016?Had Sanders had an early lead and Clinton been a distant second, all those Congressional investigations against Hillary Clinton would have ceased. There would be no more talk about her email server, no accusations against the Clinton Foundation, no calls by Donald Trump to “lock her up.” And no last-minute letter by the FBI Director claiming new evidence in a Clinton email investigation. Had Bernie Sanders been the candidate, Clinton’s approval rating would be through the roof — because it always has been whenever she's not actively running for office. See: America loves women like Hillary Clinton–as long as they’re not asking for a promotion. You would today, in this alternate Universe, love Hillary and wonder why she couldn't have been the nominee.Instead, we would have spent the past half a year hearing whatever dirt Republicans had dug up on or invented about Bernie Sanders. They would “swiftboat” him, like in 2004 when they convinced conspiracy-minded voters that John Kerry’s medals of valor for his service on a Vietnam swiftboat were actually gained through treason and lies. Or in this election, which with the help of some shoddy AP reporting they convinced voters that one of the most-admired and life-saving charitable foundations in the world was really a dirty money-laundering front for the Clintons.Who knows what accusations of criminal behavior they could have cooked up on Sanders? None of the accusations against Hillary Clinton even merited an indictment, after all. Trump himself didn't need to show evidence when he claimed for seven years that Obama was a secret Kenyan citizen. But the best propaganda involves nuggets of truth spun out of proportion.Voters looking for a change would be reminded that Sanders has been in Congress for 25 years. Trump would now be painting him as the establishment candidate.WikiLeaks would have released hacked emails showing Sanders getting favorable treatment and advance debate questions by DNC insiders. This is according to Tad Devine, Sanders’ chief strategist and Donna Brazile’s contact with their campaign, who confirmed receiving the same sort of inside help as Clinton. “If Bernie Sanders had been the nominee of the party and the Russians hacked my emails instead of John [Podesta]’s… they'd say Donna was cozying up to the Bernie campaign.”Independent voters would be reminded that Sanders’ record marks him as the 1% most consistently-liberal member of Congress. A President has to win the support of the entire country, and the Electoral College skews that further in a conservative direction. Nobody farther left than the 15th percentile has won the Presidency.Gun rights activists would be reminded of his D rating by the NRA, and then convinced of his (nonexistent) plans to take away all their guns.Fiscal conservatives would be reminded of his call for “democratic socialism” and his support for free taxpayer-funded universal health care and college education — paid for with higher taxes across the board.Business groups would spread fear over his calls for a $15 national minimum wage, claiming it would drive jobs out of our country.I could go on, but you get the point. Many of those today insisting they’d vote for anyone but Hillary were falling prey to the same attack machine that would have instead been unleashed on Sanders.Mother Jones, a magazine that often supported Bernie Sanders in the primaries, came to the same conclusion: Bernie Sanders would have lost the election in a landslide.

How do I get an international driver's licence from India? In which all countries would it be valid?
Firstly your Indian Driving license is valid in all the countries for first 6 months of stay, you really do not need the International License, but if you want to be doubly sure following is the process and documents required, I am sharing the process in Gurgaon/ Delhi RTO, it may vary slightly state to state: 1. Go to your nearest RTO buy the International Driving form(Rs. 10). 2. You would need the following documents(self attested photocopies) carry the Originals too: (a) Your Indian Driving License (b) Two address proofs- it means two different documents which show the same address for example you need to carry voters card + Rent agreement. (c) Passport - Front and back photocopy (d) Valid Visa (c) Medical Certificate - which you get at the RTO itself. (d) International Driving Licence Form (e) Covering note addressed to RTO saying why you want the license (f) 4 photographs3. Process is very simple submit the above documents pay the fees. 4. In gurgaon they ask you to get a sign from SDM who sits in the same building its a 2 minute wait. He signs without any hassle. 5. You will get the License same evening or maximum next day morning. 6. If you go early its 20-40 minute process. Following documents are valid address proof:1. Passport2. Rent agreement3. Bank Statement (only PSU Banks)4. Driving License 5. MTNL/ BSNL/ Landline Phone bill6. Gas connection7. Voters cardThe International driving license issued by Indian RTOs is valid for all the countries in the world. Plz note it is not necessary that your passport has the same address as that on your driving licence or your present address, sometime RTO officials insist, plz tell them the Passport rules do not make it mandatory to change address on passport with every change in residence. You have to apply to the RTO as per your current residence and not the one on your driving licence or passport. Best is not to take an International Driving licence its a waste of time - You surely don't need for countries like - USA, Canada, UK, EU countries, Australia, NZ, South Africa, Singapore.

What's the best way to help develop my 9 year old's talent for playing piano by ear?
I'm not familiar with the program you mentioned, but it sounds to me like things are going very well and maybe not a lot of external encouragement is needed. As your son gets older he will probably develop interests in a number of different styles of music, which may present themselves in odd phases. My best advice would be to just observe what happens and make sure he doesn't feel that anything is off limits.Does he read music? If he grows into aspirations of making a career out of music, the ability to read well will make him more marketable and will open a lot of doors for him, particularly in conjunction with such a strong ear. I wouldn't necessarily force the issue, but if he shows an interest in classical music then I'd encourage lessons with a teacher who has a good track record with precociously talented young pupils -- it is often surprisingly difficult for young people who play well by ear to learn to read, as at first the visual and mental processing of the notation will lag considerably behind the already sharp musical mind, and this can be a source of frustration, but a good teacher will help the student through it with minimal trauma. :)Take him to see live music as often as you can: jazz, the symphony, folk music, whatever is available.Your son sounds fairly similar to me at that age. I would not trade either my ear or my reading ability for anything. I love being able to sit in with bowling alley bar bands while being on call with a symphony orchestra and working as a classical voice coach. The idea that you can't do both is purely dogma, and I've never even faintly understood the idea of the "dangers" of classical training in terms of narrowing creativity, nor the idea that improvisation and pop training and creating are somehow "not serious." In the end, my basic advice is to let him follow his own interests as much as possible, while also helping him keep an eye on well-roundedness. If his interests are diverse enough, and especially if there are good teachers available, being well-rounded may well take care of itself to a large degree!(Thanks for the A2A!)

What are great ways to perfect one's presentation skills? How do I stop myself from pacing when I present?
A great presentation consists of two important parts: well-structured content that empowers the idea that you're trying to convey and an eloquent style of delivery that keeps your audience's attention on your content. Both parts aim to facilitate the communication of your idea to an audience. Poor structure makes it more difficult for your audience to follow along and extract the salient points, and poor delivery detracts from the content. An effective and general paradigm for structuring content that's applicable to any presentation, essay, research paper, funding pitch, job application presentation, resume, or tech talk comes from what MIT Professor Patrick Winston -- an AI veteran with a lecture series on How to Speak -- calls VSNC. [1] Based on this structure, any compelling presentation or paper builds upon the following four cornerstones:a clearly defined vision statement,an enumeration of concrete steps toward achieving the vision,an articulation of salient news and results with clarifying details, anda summary of contributions. Most presentations, surprisingly enough, can fit into this paradigm and become much more powerful when designed with it in mind; weak presentations usually omit one or more of these parts.Offering a succinct and clear vision (preferably on its own slide if slides are used) early in the presentation establishes the thematic goal of the talk. It defines the boundaries of what's relevant in the ideas presented and provides the glue that ties various points together. Succinctness and clarity in the vision ensure focus in the talk. Overly detail-focused individuals, in particular, sometimes create presentations whose themes are only implicitly defined and whose points flail around haphazardly.Once the high-level vision is established, enumerating the concrete steps for attaining that vision gives the audience a mental path to follow and understand what's necessary to signNow the goal. The steps review progress already made and highlight what still needs to be done. Most presenters tend to get this part right since it's a straightforward summary of completed and future work. With the path enumerated, sharing news and details about recent accomplishments provides an excellent opportunity to enrapture the audience. Numbers, statistics, graphs, analogies, demos, and stories that showcase results often work well. Engineers tend to overvalue abstraction and to inadvertently neglect to include the details, but the details and stories are often what make the talk compelling.Wrapping up the talk should be a summary of contributions. A common mistake is to end a well-organized presentation merely with a rehash of major points rather than crystallizing the unique contributions that the presenter or the presenter's team actually accomplished. The contributions may be completed work that moves a field, product, or company forward or they may simply the be the refinements of ideas that offer a completely new perspective. To make the VSNC concepts of vision, steps, news, and contributions more concrete, let's take a look at how they apply to a real-life presentation and how they help convey ideas more clearly. Mac and technology fans look forward to Steve Jobs's Apple keynote presentations, partly because they're dying to know the next visionary Apple product and partly because Jobs's presentations are extremely well-executed. His commanding stage presence definitely helps, but a decomposition of his recent March 2nd keynote [2, 3] on the iPad 2 reveals that the VSNC paradigm provides a powerful framework for understanding how his presentations are typically organized.Jobs starts his presentation by summarizing the vision for the iPad 2 in a single, crisp slide: "Our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price."What were the concrete steps involved in building this magical and revolutionary device? Jobs outlines the steps in these two slides, reviewing upgrades to faster dual-core processors and graphics while maintaining low power usage and the efforts to make the device even more lightweight and 33% thinner:Having established the vision and the steps to getting there, Jobs pitches the new iPad 2 by going over salient news and results to get the audience excited. He chooses to do this by showcasing demos on the iPad 2 of FaceTime, PhotoBooth, iMovie, and GarageBand:At other keynote presentations where Jobs also reviews the momentum of existing products, Jobs will often augment the news portion by sharing and marveling at numbers and details on how many iPhones or iPads were sold in the past year.Jobs concludes with a summary of new engineering, product, and pricing contributions to convince the audience that 2011 will be the year of the iPad 2. Some of the points were previously covered in other slides; others like the statistic on 65,000 iPad apps reminds the audience that contributions made to the original iPad still apply to the iPad 2.The application of the VSNC paradigm to Jobs's keynotes illustrates that VSNC is a surprisingly versatile and powerful framework for both crafting and critiquing the organizational structure of presentations.Once the content is solid, the other foundation of a great presentation is delivery and style, for which here are a few useful pointers:Enunciate and speak slowly. Unbridled enthusiasm for your work or your idea and nervousness to finish the presentation as fast as possible can easily lead to an overly quick delivery and slurred words. If you feel that you're speaking at a slow and comfortable pace, slow down further to about 50% of that pace. Speaking slowly provides a variety of benefits beyond the obvious of ensuring that your audience can understand what you're saying; it gives you more time to choose your next words, helps slow down the pace to keep you relaxed and in control, and provides more of an opportunity for you to watch the audience's expressions and re-adjust your presentation strategy (for example, by rewording an explanation upon detection of blank faces) as necessary.Train yourself to avoid sprinkling your speech with "ums" and "likes," and replace them instead with pauses. Either have a friend count your "ums" or "likes" or record your own presentation and count them yourself later. While initially uncomfortable, pauses actually sound more professional and help accentuate key points that you're trying to communicate. Colin Firth's Oscar-winning performance and delivery in the The King's Speech exemplifies how a carefully enunciated and pause-filled speech can motivate and move an audience.Maintain eye contact with the audience. In particular, pick a few friendly faces from the audience that appear to be reacting to your presentation. Their nods of approval and understanding give positive feedback and bolster your confidence during the presentation, and any confused expressions act as an indicator that you might need to slow down and re-explain a possibly tricky point.Don't read directly from your slides. Time spent on reading slides is time not spent maintaining eye contact with the audience. Moreover, reading long sentence-like bullet points on slides conveys a lack of preparation and reduces the incentive for the audience to actually listen to you since they can just read the text faster themselves. A better approach is to list key, succinct points on the slides and to connect them together with your own words. This incentivizes you to better rehearse to have fluid transitions between points and forces the audience to pay attention in order to understand the presentation.Move deliberately in time with your points, so that transitions in your physical stage presence correspond to transitions in your presentation. This helps to both reduce the amount of haphazard pacing while accentuating important transitions in your presentations. If your presentation has three points, one simple way of doing this to walk in the shape of squished baseball diamond so that you walk to a new base as you transition to each point and then walk back to home plate as you conclude. If your presentation involves writing on a whiteboard, make sure to write with an open body that's perpendicular to the board rather than facing the board. Facing the board while you write occludes the text or diagrams and increases the lag between when you're writing (and likely speaking) and when the audience can actually read what you wrote. If there is Q&A at the end of the presentation, always repeat the question, possibly rephrasing in your own words. Repeating the question ensures both a) that the audience is able to hear the question, and b) that you've actually heard the question correctly and don't waste time or look silly while answering an incorrect interpretation of the quesiton.Skills in structuring effective presentations and delivering them clearly come with practice. Keeping vision, steps, news, and contributions in mind for any talk or presentation will make it stronger, and dissecting strong presentations and critiquing weak ones to understand how the speaker handled or mishandled each cornerstone will make your own talks better.----------[1] http://courses.csail.mit.edu/6.8...[2] http://events.apple.com.edgesuit...[3] http://www.geeksugar.com/Apple-i...

Why do all PDF reader software use red logos?
PDF, or portable document format, was first developed as a file format in the 1993 by signNow, with the now ubiquitous red signNow A/triangle infinity swoop icon. Since 2008, PDF has been an ISO standard (ID 32000-2), and an open format, which means that anyone can use it without paying royalties to signNow. The original colors stuck around though, as most readers use the red colors which were initially part of signNow’s logo. Since becoming an open format though, the PDF market has changed dramatically, with the introduction of highly efficient apps, which work on mobile devices, like Kdan Mobile’s PDF Reader. If you’re looking for a great PDF reader that has all of the best editing functions, which you can download for free, as part of the Kdan team, I highly recommend that you try this PDF Reader. It’s trusted by over 50 million downloads, and is packed with cool features, to help users accomplish all of their everyday document editing tasks with ease. It was even promoted to the App of the Year on the Google Play Store, and best Productivity on the iTunes App Store, so you’ve probably seen it before. What makes it different, is that although it is free to download, you still have many editing functions only seen in premium paid apps, like combine PDF, edit pages, and even signatures. With signatures, you can edit, add form data, and sign with a legally valid signature, or request signatures from others with a built-in cloud based document management system, all from one app. If you want to see one of the most feature-rich PDF readers on the market today, with support for iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac, I highly recommend that you try PDF Reader today.
