Which Apple Watch apps do you find most useful?
My favorite Apple Watch apps are the following:Email:In fact, one reason I love smartwatches generally is it saves me a lot of time because I can immediately see which emails are coming in on my wrist and therefore need only open email on my phone/laptop when it’s necessary. This is huge for me with my work.Calendar:I really like the Apple S2 calendar interface with 3 viewing options. It’s very user friendly and I can quickly determine what events/meetings I have for the day without opening my calendar.Step tracking:This is more for interest sake than anything, although I’ve noticed occasions where I’ll walk more just because it helps hit my steps goal. While not a big deal per day, it’s very good in the long run.Maps:Apple S2 knocked it out of the park with its map app. It’s a full blown GPS system which I can use to find nearby shopping, restaurants, coffee shops and much more. It’s super easy to use, relatively fast and when needed, a real bonus.FYI, 3 of the 4 apps I like and use the most are on most smartwatches so it’s not unique with exception of the maps app. Apple’s map app is the best I’ve used (although I have yet to try the Garmin fenix 3 and soon-to-be-released fenix 5).

How should one fill out the DAF form for the UPSC civil services?
1) Things to keep in mind while filling your DAF 1. DAF is not like your resume, the more achievements the more you will score. Here DAF is only a way to know about you so that they can ask questions. 2. Please do not try to fake or write for the sake of writing. If there is no achievement, then don’t create one, no hobby then don’t write fake one . 3. Be specific. For you music might be a hobby (listening in free time), but they will expect you to know about music in detail. . You might like cooking but they will ask you anything related to cooking ( about preservatives, masalas, cooking recepies, types of cuisines etc).So better to avoid writing such open ended things. Write specific things which you know you can prepare.a 4. Writing something and not able to answer basic questions related to those things sends a very wrong impression. When you are filling DAF ensure you write less but meaningful things you are confident about. 2) Service Preference List Important : These are my personal views which can be biased. Detail about each service, growth opportunities can be found here http://persmin.gov.in/AIS1/WelcomeCSE.asp Brief about Services 1. IAS Good work, Good Infrastructure and highly respectable. Issue is interference and work pressure. If you want a very peaceful life and tension free life then think about it. 2. IFS Work as diplomats. Good services, especially for people who like to travel, pursue intellectual hobbies. You will have alternate terms in foreign country and India. Yes do give a consideration from family perspective and secondly from perspective that if you want paraphernalia you will not get it. 3. IPS Mostly work is in law and order domain. Lot of power, infra and Paraphernalia. However IPS is a very tough job and not everyone is made for it. It needs lot of patience, sacrifice in personal life and has maximum interference. So choose accordingly. 4. IRS IT and Customs My personal advice would be to choose IT over customs ( stable cadre, timely promotions , decent infra and good places of postings) However work can appear to be boring due to a desk job restricted to taxation. Customs on the other hand is having more variety. 5. IRTS vs IAAS IRTS is IAS of railways. Lot of manpower under you. Good infra and facilities. However issue is very hectic life especially if you are in operations side as you have to manage timely running of trains. So don't opt it if you want a peaceful and tension free life. IAAS on the other hand is a totally different service. It audits almost everything in government. Remember it is not just auditing of accounts here but a larger purview. Also stable posting, normal working hours, postings in state capital and Delhi plus lot of foreign visits and yes timely promotions. Plus everyone fears an auditor. However you won't enjoy executive powers and perks like IRTS. So decide what kind of life you want. 6. Accounting Services IRAS Best among accounting services. Total financial power in railways. Good infrastructure, work life balance and good postings. Plus lot of opportunities for deputation due to finance. IDAS This is also a good service. Lot of financial power in defence sector. Good infrastructure, work life balance and good postings. Plus lot of opportunities for deputation due to finance ICAS This is more of an accounting service. It has the responsibility to consolidate accounts of all the Dept except few. Posting in Delhi. However housing, car can be an issue. IPTAFS This service has lost lot of ground due to BSNL and MTNL separating from DoT. So major work is collecting spectrum allocation and licence fee. Infrastructure issues are also there. 7. Railway services Railway services have good infrastructure and facilities. Housing, car and manpower is not an issue. IRTS - IRAS - IRPS IRPS Not much work, dealing with unions and personnel management . RPF I would suggest to fill it among the bottom 5 services. Its like paramilitary force (Railway Protection Force) 8. IPoS Good service. Administration of all post offices. Good infra and facilities. Plus post office's are getting modernized so new work is coming up. 9. IDeS This is a service where you work as CEO of cantonments/defence estates. There is huge infrastructure at your disposal, very good facilities. However growth is stagnant, work is not dynamic. Also you will not always be working in cantonments, HQ postings and other postings are there as well. 10. ICLS and ITS Both are new age services with postings in Capital cities and Delhi. ICLS are regulators of corporate sector. They implement company law and are involved in Registration, M&A, and Liquidation etc. Service seems to have a promising future but as of now it is not much preferred. Reasons include Infrastructure problem, desk work and stagnation as the top level. IT on the other hand deals with trade policy implementation. Officers working closely with traders and exporters. Also working in SEZ, policy work and some International exposure. So work is interesting and promising. Issue with both the services is similar. These are comparatively new service & do not have a huge infrastructure compared to postal, defence and railways. So Car, housing, other facilities might be a little problem. Also at senior level stagnation issue. 11. IoFS Not much of an idea but their scope is more or less related to management of ordinance factories. Infra won’t be much of an issue. But usually filled among bottom few services 12. Danics & Danips These are like State civil services(UT civil service) with a difference that promotions are better compared to most of the states. Many people prefer them at the bottom due to Group B. However in terms of power, work, infra these are better than many group A central services. 13. Indian Information Service This is like a PR Job. Most IIS officers work in various media units which are under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting such as DD News, All India Radio, Press Information Bureau etc. Even posted with various Ministries as spokespersons to handle the Ministry's information and communication needs and help in policy formulation. So work wise this is a nice service, plus majorly you stay in Delhi. Infrastructure, car housing is again an issue. 14. AFHQ + Pondicherry civil service Bottom services to be filled. Now how to fill service preference list See this is a totally personal choice depending on what you want from your life. What matters to you : balanced life ? Quality work ? Power & Infrastructure? Delhi Posting? Decide accordingly. Here are some hints based on common choice 1. Most preferred services (IAS – IFS –IPS – IRS IT –IRS Customs – IRTS /IAAS) . 2. Less preffered services ( AFHQ , Pondicherry civil services , RPF, IoFS, IPTAFS ,ICLS ) 3. Middle Category ( IRAS, IDAS, ICAS, IPOS,IDES,ITS,IIS,IRPS) As per me IRTS %3EIRAS%3EIRPS IRAS%3EIDAS%3EICAS IPOS%3EIDES IDAS%3EIDES ICAS, IIS, ITS (one is accounts, other is media/PR and one relates to Trade. Usual preference is ICAS – IIS-ITS) 4. Adjust DANICS & DANIPS as per your convenience. Some people prefer them after Railway, Defence and Postal while majority put it at the end. Decide as per your own choice. Delhi Posting : ICAS , IIS Services where Infrastructure won’t be an issue (Apart from Most preferred services ): IRAS,IRPS,IPOS,IDES,IDAS . I think infra will not be an issue even in IOFS and RPF. 3) CADRE Preference P.S : Totally personal views. For details you can refer here http://www.iascoachingindelhi.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/CadreReport.pdf UP: great work opportunities and infrastructure. But if you don't want an exciting and challenging life, it should not be high on your list. Bihar: Mostly like UP but more backward. MP, Rajasthan, Haryana: Good cadres. Balanced ones. Usually preferred by people. Punjab: Mixed reviews about the cadre. Jharkhand and Chattisgarh, Odisha: People carry lot of misconceptions. These are nice cadres to work plus good infra. Naxal problem is prevalent only in certain areas. Other issue is these are little backward areas. But I think these are highly underrated cadres . Uttarakhand and Himachal : Decent cadres to work but terrain issues. Not everyone likes hill posting so keep that in mind. Northeast cadres : Mostly people fill them lower in their preference due to factors like distance, culture, hills, personal life etc. Assam-Megahalya is the most preferred choice among north east cadres. J&K : considered a tough posting. Hills + security concerns etc. West Bengal and Kerala : Work wise normal but their political setup is different so many people don't prefer these cadres. So decide accordingly . Andra and Telangana : Good cadres to work. North Indians prefer them most among southern states. Karnataka: fine Tamil Nadu : state services is very strong here so at times they hold important posts in the district . Maharashtra : Good cadre Gujarat : Mixed reviews. Agmut: mixed reviews. Good thing is you get to stay for long in Delhi. Making choices I can’t tell you what to opt. But I can share what people preferably fill at lower preference. Again as per my knowledge. - North eastern States - J&K - Kerala and WB ( some people prefer to fill them low) Also sharing some favoured cadres due to different reasons: - Rajasthan, Haryana, MP (Delhi proximity and balanced cadres ) - UP & Bihar (Strong power centres for IAS) - AGMUT (Delhi posting, but not for those who like UP , Bihar work culture ) - Sorry but I am not able to comment on south Indian cadres due to lack of in depth knowledge Cadres considered bad but are actually not - Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand That is all from my side. Hopefully this post can help you to some extent. All the best

How can I keep PDF annotations in sync between my Mac and my iPad?
A great way to have your PDF annotations synced is by using an app that will do this for you. One app I’d recommend checking out is Markup Pro [ https://creativestore.kdanmobile.com/subscription/markuppro ] by Kdan Mobile. There are a lot of features that make working with PDFs easy, with not just synced annotations, but many other useful tools to use to your advantage. If you’re part of a company, it’s very easy to collaborate - share all files, web markups, annotations, videos and documents with your team through the shared folder, this helps to increase communication and collaboration. Highlight the necessary information on the web - sync with multiple devices and link the web highlights to your PDFs Markup supports many file formats, and it’s easy to customize your PDFs as well with your own writing, sticky notes, highlights and shapes. You can also fill in forms and sign documents, and highlight texts in ePub books. It’s easy to back everything up to the cloud of your choice and you can also copy files while connected to WiFi or the Open-in feature. I personally like Markup because it lets me sort through files/annotations faster, and having everything synced to my cloud is very convenient, and working with PDFs is much easier in general. Disclaimer: I am part of Kdan’s team and my answers might be a bit biased.

Why is France so horrible?
I was born in France, and raised in the US, but went back to France enough to sort of get a feel for the differing dynamics (including my college studies). As a child, France was always a Utopia in my mind. I’d spend my Summers in Paris and in Anglet (South of France around the Basque Country). I’d eat amazing cheese for 2€ and under a piece. I’d walk to the bakery every morning with my sister and finish half the baguette by the time we were home. I’d get unique clothing no one at home had.Anyways, as I got older and especially after I started living in France year-around for school, I started to notice some drawbacks. (NONE of these make France “horrible”, mind you.)Someone in a previous answer said France wasn’t racist. I would beg to differ. I dated an Algerian man while in France and I can tell you that he faced a lot of hardships, and that I myself faced a lot of scrutiny solely for dating someone of his ethnicity (not difficult compared to what he and his family experienced, of course). Anyone of Arabic descent faces constant judgement and assumptions. Even besides racism, I’ve noticed a tendency for the French to place themselves above any other culture. I mean, I get it - the art, the food, the history is something to be proud of. But consistently, I’ve also noticed a pattern of closed-mindedness. It’s like as soon as something strays from the ordinary, it’s frowned on. (These are gross generalizations and younger generations demonstrate this much less). When I went to university in France, I bonded the most quickly with non-french students, even though I am half french and was born here. I felt those from other countries, or who were french and something else, were more tolerant and open minded, and complained a bit less.I wonder if a french person wrote this question, because as I just mentioned, the french complain A LOT. I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing! France’s history was formed around revolutions, aka the people speaking out for what they want. To this day, we have this mentality. Proof, the transportation strikes going on two days a week in Paris. There’s always a strike somewhere in France, it seems it’s in the french blood to express one’s dissatisfactions. I recently went to a happy hour for alumni from my school, in the US. Right away, it hit me like a pile of bricks how much the french like to complain, I had forgotten! “Washington DC metro is just unacceptable; the US really gives no value to the public sector; my comcast salesman was so rude because he was American”. These things may all be true, however individuals went ON and ON about how awful everything in the US is. It almost became comical to me in the end.Anyways. Whenever I am back in France, some seem to think that the USA is the Mecca and that everyone there is rich and successful (I know many countries share this idealization). Sure, the rich may be richer, however at what cost? The average American has two- three weeks of vacation per year (guaranteed 5 in France); works long hours (work week is now 35 hours in France); retires as late as possible because they can’t afford to live otherwise (once you retire in France, you’re pretty golden). If you have or want kids, better start saving up for their college education where 40k a semester is the price for certain “public” schools. (I went to a good french school and it was considered pricey at 8k a semester). Unforeseen medical emergency? Good luck dealing with that financial burden without medical insurance. All this to say, France has its flaws like anywhere else, but I do think the quality of life for an average Frenchman exceeds that of an American. And the cheese prices still keep France a Utopia in my mind.

What incident has traumatized you for good?
The death of my 17 year old son. In 2016 my son started complaining of pain in his hip/thigh area. We of course took him to the pediatrician (he was 16 at the time). Doctor said it was because his bone was growing faster than the leg muscle. Okay, fine. The pain continued. Doctor ordered x-rays. Nothing shows up. Pain continues. Doctor orders blood work. Inconclusive. Pain continues…actually getting worse. Doctor orders a CAT scan. Inconclusive. Doctor refers us to a rheumatologist. They diagnose him with juvenile arthritis. Then change their diagnosis to a slightly different form of arthritis.Okay, fine. We have a diagnosis. And it’s not a worst case scenario diagnosis. At this point my son is in intense pain. The only thing that helps is steaming hot showers, and that, according to him, only took his mind off his hip pain. The night before the second worst day of my life, my son spent most of it in the shower. Oh, and they also had my son going to physical therapy for the past month or so. So, we inform the rheumatologist we would like to start treatment for the arthritis. He says he would like one final CAT scan. I take my son later that day for one, not thinking much about it. At this point he had been poked and prodded, had multiple x-rays and a prior CAT scan. I thought the diagnosis had been determined. We come home from the scan, and my ex wife calls me. The rheumatologist had called her (apparently he only had her number) and he want’s my son in the hospital, like, yesterday. The scan apparently lit up like a Christmas tree this time.My son had been in pain, as I said. We immediately took him to the hospital, and he reported his pain level at a 10. They gave him morphine. They told us they suspected cancer but would need a biopsy to confirm. It came back positive for a rare childhood cancer called ewing sarcoma (I know that should probably be capitalized…sorry…I’m not gonna capitalize the name of this awful fucking cancer. ewing sarcoma is a bone cancer. From when my son first started complaining of pain to when he was finally (accurately) diagnosed, seven months had gone by. Seven months that we lost when we could have been actively battling this disease. They then did a full body scan and confirmed it had already spread to his lungs. I didn’t want to ask the oncologist what his odds were. I simply couldn’t stand hearing another human being tell me that information. Instead I went online and discovered that, at my son’s stage, the odds of survival were 30% at best.We fought. He fought. Chemo, radiation. Almost a full year of it. He had to be on crutches or a wheelchair because the cancer had nearly destroyed his upper femur. That was horrific hearing because as I said before he was (properly) diagnosed he was undergoing physical therapy…which could easily have shattered the bone. But he was responding positively to the chemo. After about eight months his leg scan showed clear and he was allowed to walk again. He was also allowed into a clinical study intended to match treatment to a particular cancer’s DNA. Things seemed to be looking up. I should also mention that, from when he was first administered morphine in the ER up until this point, his pain level went from a 10 to 0. To see your teenage son in pain for those seven months prior was a hell I don’t wish on anyone. So the fact that he was pain free during this period was a blessing. Fast forward another two months, My son has a full body MRI that show’s he is free of cancer. There were still a few nodules in his lungs but we were told those were most likely scar tissue from where his tumors used to be. We were euphoric.About a week later, I’m taking my kids to hang for the day with some good family friends. My son is quiet. I don’t think much of this…he was 17 and like any teenager could be quite moody at times. We got to the campground where we were meeting our friends when my son tells me his neck was hurting him. Like, lots. We call the oncologist, and are told to bring him in to the ER. They look him over, tell me it’s probably just muscle cramps possibly a side effect from one of the many drugs he’s been taking. I accepted this. After all, he just received an all clear scan. I can’t recall if it was one or two days later that we took him to the Children’s Hospital for his regularly scheduled appointment. He is still experiencing severe neck pain. Doctors do a MRI on his neck and back. It’s riddled with cancer. So, we go from a phone call from my son’s oncologist the week prior saying my son is cancer free, to being told later this day that my son’s cancer is terminal. My reaction? I was livid. I was red with anger. It took my son 7 months to be properly diagnosed (which really is what cost him his life. This cancer, caught early on, is very curable). There was another chart reading error made by the oncology team that happened prior which I haven’t gone into on here. There was going to the ER and being told it was just muscle spasms. And now after getting an “all clear” scan being told that not only is it not all clear, but in fact terminal!!! The oncologist explained that the whole body scan wasn’t capable of detecting cancer in the spine or some crap like that. I was never told that. I was never told that the “all clear” scan meant anything other than just that. The oncologist didn’t really seem to get my frustration and suggested I was free to take my son elsewhere if I wasn’t satisfied. Can you believe that. This person had been my son’s oncologist for 11 months, and this is the response I get.My son was given weeks to months to live. He ended up living another five months. He passed away on Valentine’s day of this year. The worst day of my life. And now my heart hurts every day.Edit: could i get a doctor to chime in? Why Not do a biopsy first. Bone and muscle. Rule out cancer. I know, costs so much. But guess what. My son would be alive now if this was policy.Edit2: So after the better part of two years I decided to contact a lawyer to see if a malpractice suit was even feasible. And after all you've read above, in the State of Michigan, USA, it is not. The only way I could sue and win is if they were withholding treatment to an extent until they discovered the cancer was spreading. So, oncologists in Michigan, go ahead, tell that family your loved one is free of cancer. Then, in the next week, let them know it's terminal. In the Great State of Michigan, that's all perfectly legal. And, I hate to get political, but it's compliments of the republican party which has ruled this state for 18 years and has decimated a citizen’s ability to sue for malpractice.

What is the biggest scam you’ve ever seen?
Personally? I have two.I used to work for a Home Depot store. I sold lumber and building materials, which means insulation, drywall, roofing, fencing, ladders and masonry products. Quite a bit of my business was in special-order products. We sold a customer two pallets of special order shingles. We had never sold this model of shingle to anyone before. The manufacturer brought them to us on Friday and we called the customer. “My contractor will be there on Monday.”On Saturday, someone showed up in the returns line with a bundle of these shingles. “I bought these and don’t need them, so I bro...
