Feeling emotions with great intensity is the reason I can intuitively identify with others' experiences.Intense anger/rage: I studied the physiological presentations of my rage. 'Anger' in my stomach + chest meant underlying fear. 'Anger' in my stomach + armpits pulsing meant I felt wronged. 'Anger' in my stomach + throat meant I was hurting. 'Anger' in my stomach + clenched jaw meant I was annoyed, etc. Though the intensity of the physiological sensations never changed, I learned how to respond to what they meant.Feelings of emptiness: I understood that this was easily confused with depression, and was also a physiological sensation. I came to realize that did not mean I was sad or unhappy, and came about when I was unstimulated. When these feelings occur, I've learned effective distraction is mandatory.Self-damaging/self-harming/risky behavior: I came to understand that this was a result of avoiding: a) boredom, b) feelings of emptiness and c) racing thoughts. My 'addiction' was to a drug named 'feeling'. Because pwBPD feel emotions/sensations so intensely, it is addictive to always want to feel more. Meditation was another solution to this problem.Suicidal ideations: I came to understand that this was my body/brain's way of screaming 'I want things to be better!'. That the reason the desire to die was an ideation but never an execution was because it was my core desperately craving greater reason to be alive. This is why Logic's song '1–800–273–8255′ is so meaningful to pwBPD. Suicidal ideations mean we want to be alive. But only therapy helps us figure that out.Unstable self-image: Healing from this one will take the longest time. I'd been both loved and hated by many my whole life, and I couldn't understand either. The word 'fake' was often used to describe me and it hurt. I learned I was never fake, I was simply a kaleidescope of personalities. Everything others wanted me to be - to avoid rejection or abandonment. The instruction to 'be myself' still irks me, because I am just now creating myself in adulthood. However, at least now I am doing this was a sense of awareness.Transient/stress related dissociation: Therapy helped me realize that though this is an unhealthy self-protective measure, it is also crucial to my creativity. Most pwBPD are remarkably creative and what is creativity without being able to 'zone out'? Meditation helped me be mindful enough to stop myself when disconnecting to avoid intense emotions.Unstable relationships: This one includes all of my comments on trust. But I'll add that I had an unintentional habit (what in mental health is called maladaptive) of instigating and perpetuating chaos in my relationships. Therapy has helped me curb the tiny ways I would do that. But the most important takeaway from this symptom is that I do not allow someone to be close to me unless I trust them to know of, understand and accept my BPD.I mentioned meditation several times because that has been the most effective tool for my BPD recovery. All symptoms of BPD are linked to a damaged sense of present awareness. Meditation literally rewires your brain and, therefore, your self-awareness. The better I got at meditation, the less I needed medication.My most important change in perception was seeing BPD as a disorder that I 'suffer' from. No. I live with it. I've thrived because of it. The symptoms caused some of my greatest gifts: empathy, resilience, creativity, adaptability, charm & emotional intelligence. The symptoms never go away.
