[Music] turn to proverbs chapter 22. proverbs chapter 22 as i uh as i had said uh last week we'd be switching shifting gears we finished up with psalms and gonna shift proverbs from sunday night to wednesday night keep in mind next week is a vacation bible school so we'll actually be starting at six o'clock and of course we'll have our regular prayer meeting and bible study but everybody's still invited to attend vbs and look forward to a good time from six o'clock to 7 30 is the is the appointed time for vbs this coming week and uh so proverbs chapter 22 so the last uh message from proverbs was principles from proverbs part two and we finished with verse 16 so we're going to pick up at verse 17 let's go to lord in prayer and ask him to speak to us through his word heavenly father thank you for your word and thank you for the opportunity that that you are still calling and moving in the hearts of your servants of your people to minister around the world and around this country and lord we just just pray that you would continue that that there would be churches who need pastors that they would be filled with godly men and that there be godly men and women who would be surrendering to the mission field and churches that would be training them and supporting them and uh that your work would go on and uh we just pray now that you would help us in this place that uh we would be faithful to your word and that there would be people who would be grounded and surrendered to you uh grounded in your words surrendered to just living for you in whatever capacity that entails and lord pray that you would help us to learn these truths tonight from you and from proverbs and uh may you speak to each and every heart in jesus name amen so we are here in part three we're going to do our best to finish the chapter tonight because we actually have some verses we've reviewed we've gone verse by verse and oftentimes each principle is there's a verse that has a different principle attached to it but tonight we actually find some combinations of verses and in proverbs 22 and verse 17 it says bow down thine ear and hear the words of the wise and apply thine heart unto my knowledge for it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee they shall with all be fitted in thy lips that thy trust may be in the lord i have made known to thee this day even to thee have not i written to thee excellent things and counsels in knowledge that i might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee and so there is the the principle here is that we need to apply our hearts to knowledge and receive the words of truth and so going back to verse 17 bow down thine ear and hear the words of the wise now i just got done saying that you know it's many times have been so individual centered as far as the leader center leadership centered of holding up certain pastors or preachers and throughout history and then they go off the scene well it's not should not be a personality contest and and the churches should not be personality driven as far as built upon personalities they should be built on just the proper biblical leadership and the the equipping people with god's word but there are those who god has used and has given great opportunity whether it's to pastor larger churches or just to be influential in a broader sense outside of their own church and and so there are times when god will will give let's just say bow down thine ear and hear the words of the wise so there's certain people who you really need to hear their words and so it's not about exalting a human being it's just simply god has has worked in certain people where you need to hear the words of the wise and by the way any christian can be wise and any christian can give their words to others their words of wisdom to others for their benefit for their learning so this isn't an exclusive group like oh you you if you're if god doesn't allow you to be part of that wise group sorry you don't get to be wise uh no god wants everybody to be wise he wants every christian to grow in the knowledge and wisdom and receive the words of truth and but at the same time when there are people who are wise we should be hearing them we should be listening to them uh taking heed to their words bowed down thine ear that means you are moving in that direction you're lowering your ear toward that direction and to hear the words of the wise apply and apply thine heart unto my knowledge she says i have some things i want to teach you and you need to apply your heart to it why is it that some people get it and other people don't because they some there are some who apply their heart to knowledge and there are others who don't apply their heart to knowledge they might hear a lot of things they might even get a lot of intellectual information they might get some facts but it's really not sinking down to their heart and so they're not going to be growing in wisdom because they are not applying their heart to knowledge and here when we think about the um oftentimes you know proverbs is is written from the as from the tone of a father to a son you know they're oftentimes sons don't apply their hearts to the knowledge that their fathers have for them or they don't uh listen to the whys or the wisdom that their their father has and might have hopefully has and so then they go off and and human nature in office especially with the younger a person is uh maybe through their teen years or as they get up maybe still even in their 20s but to a certain degree it's still in all of us that uh you know we just know better for us it'll be different we just have we have better ideas and that's what we're facing in this country as well from a bigger perspective a broader perspective is is we have from a po in a even a political standpoint boy the younger people they just know better we need to we need to hand over the keys of the country to the young people they just know better and so that's why we have a former bartender as a representative coming from new york city yep she's full of words of wisdom i mean no not really she's full of utter marxism and stupidity but um uh alexandria ocasio-cortez um or as i won't say that some some some call our occasional cortex um but uh uh but anyway the point is you know here's somebody who was elected to office and now we've got this is the young standard bearer the torch bearer who just knows better and is going to lead the way to a bright future for the united states of america and and that's that's where the human nature comes in even with children toward their parents is they might think ah you just don't know i just you know i'm you're this is a different generation now but you know there god's wisdom and god's truth is timeless and it transcends any generation and so if someone is equipped whether it's parents whether it's elected officials whether it's pastors whether it's no matter how old they are there might be certain things in the culture that they might not be as aware of or maybe in tune with uh but at the same time god's wisdom is timeless and so no matter how old or young a person is if they have the truth of god's word and they have his wisdom words of wisdom that is what counts and so whether it's sons or daughters heeding the wisdom of their parents or whether it's people in the the churches heeding the words of the wise in the churches uh in various settings it's a very important thing it says in verse 18 for it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee what keep what the words of the wise keeping the the knowledge they shall with all be fitted in thy lips so you'll not only you keep them within you'll also be at the point where you can speak them they'll be fitted in your lips where then you will be able to pass that on to others and real by the way you can't you can't teach wisdom wisdom cannot be taught i cannot actually teach you wisdom i can teach you knowledge i can teach you facts i can give you information but you yourself have to apply yourself to knowledge and truth and i have to apply myself in knowledge and truth and god's truth so then we can then we can become more wise wisdom is uh more to borrow the phrase more caught than taught um and i can't just teach wisdom intellectually the we can the if someone is wise they can give their words so it's the words of the wise which are good words but you won't gain wisdom just simply by me by my speaking to you you have to apply your own heart and i have to apply my own heart to it and seek god for wisdom if any of you lack wisdom let him ask of god for it is a verse 19 that thy trust may be in the lord i have made known to thee this day even to thee and so part of that gaining in knowledge and wisdom build your build your trust in the lord verse 20 have not i written to the excellent things in counsels and knowledge that i might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth so once again here's another principle about truth is the certainty of the words of truth that you can know truth and you can be certain of the words of truth and so i like that phrase uh that the the the certainty of the words of truth that you don't have to doubt it you don't have to be wondering all right is there absolute truth no there is absolute truth if something is true then it is certain does not change that thou might just answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee and so there you if you yourself know the certainty of the words of truth well then when people come to you for answers you have the words of truth to give them and that's that's the way it's supposed to be that's the way god wants the christian life to operate he wants the churches to operate is that the words of truth are preached they're spoken they're taught they're received so that then the words of truth can be dispersed even to others by those who have received the words of truth it's a continuous it's meant to be a continuous cycle continuous cycle my my goal is to equip you to then have the answers for others that's that's one of my goals now i i need to have the answers for others as well but i mean one person one pastor can't do everything can't deal with uh you know every person there are people that you know that i don't know there are people that you have more influence with than i do there are people that trust you maybe more than they trust me or maybe they don't know me very well or whatever it might be you have more influence in some people's lives and so you need to have be equipped with the answers with the words of truth to give to others in verse 22 we move on verses 22 and 23 rob not the poor because he is poor neither oppressed the afflicted in the gate for the lord will plead their cause and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them so don't take advantage of the poor or oppress them with unjust judgments that's why it says here rob not the poor because he is poor you know there should not be a singling out of the poor the vulnerable to take advantage of them but there are people who will do that we have uh we have an economy um that is as one preacher said it um the world how do you say this the world system is set up or the economy is set up to extract money from you and it doesn't discriminate as to whether you're rich or poor i mean they especially like the rich people's money because they have more of it but they'll take poor people's money too and there are times they will put prey on the poor and and there are people who you know there's a lot of scams going on right now a lot of scams like telephone scams and uh they'll call you up and and there's there's various ones and and there'll be people who uh particularly if they they do this type of scam um i'll send you a check for three thousand dollars all you gotta do is deposit that check and send me 300 of it back and you just keep the rest well it's a bad check it's going to bounce and if you spend that money let's say you you deposit that check and before that check clears or comes back because it takes it can take a couple days or a few days there are people who will spend that money right away like boom we'll spend this and they're on the hook for that they say well it was a scam but you're still on the hook to that financial institution you still owe that financial institution that money now there was a story um in um this is probably getting off topic anyway so i probably don't know if i should say this but just real quick in pennsylvania i'd heard a year or two ago there was a large deposit that was accidentally made into a couple's account in pennsylvania and it was it was a regional pretty large bank so it was the deposit i believe was made in georgia but they put it in the wrong account it was some people in pennsylvania and it was tens of thousands of dollars i think at least and they went out and they just spent that money and then all of a sudden well they figured out the mistake and now they're on the hook and they actually got arrested for it because they were knowingly spending money that wasn't theirs so they got in some legal trouble don't so in other words i said that just don't do that if money shows up in your account don't spend it if you don't know what the money is because you could be on the hook for it if it's if it was a mistake uh made or a scam um but we should not uh the poor should not be taken advantage of or oppressed but that is that is the nature of as we as we've seen in um earlier in the chapter the rich ruleth over the poor it's just an it's a it's an it's it's a fact of life that those who have the money those who have the wealth are more influential over the poor but the poor should not be oppressed or taken advantage of and notice here that neither oppressed the afflicted in the gate that has to do with the seats of authority there should be proper judgment given to the poor they should not be treated unjustly by those in authority and governmental authority for the lord will plead their cause and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them so even if there's no other humans that can stand up for them or do anything for them god is going to stand up for them god is going to plead their cause he's going to advocate for them and then god has ways of removing the spoils from those who took advantage of the poor he can take care of that in verses 24 and 25 it says make no friendship with an angry man and with a furious man thou shalt not go lest thou learn his ways and get a snare to thy soul so very important command here make no friendship with an angry man there are people who are just live they live angry they have a a just that anger always inside of them and the bible says don't make friends with that type of person and the reason being is that their their anger can influence others their anger rubs off their anger corrupts others and others can become angry along with them it says uh with a furious man thou shalt not go lest thou learn his ways and get a snare to thy soul so it is a snare to learn the ways of an angry man it's not good for you it's a trap it's gonna it's just it's gonna result in bad things and so we should be careful about that who our closest companions are who our friends are that they aren't angry people and then we also ourselves need to make sure maybe there's i don't know if there's anybody in here who has just that constant angry spirit i don't necessarily sense that from anybody and who's in the room right now uh but at the same time there are people like that they have a a constant angry spirit and that's why then that's what the bible hears is make no friends with an make no friendship with an angry man it's not talking about someone who once in a while gets angry it's talking about someone who just you just never know when they're gonna blow up you never know when they're you know they're a ticking time bomb and that's an angry person that's someone who's just always angry and and they may probably have bitterness and who knows what else but those who are just habitually angry people we should not have as our closest companions lest thou learn his ways and get a snare to thy soul so it's a trap we and we need to make sure we aren't angry people we need to make sure we are ave the fruit of the spirit which is love joy peace long suffering and and uh meekness and and you know if we have a meek and lowly heart like jesus did we're not going to have an angry heart we're not going to have a hardened heart because oftentimes angry people are also hardened people verse 26 and verses 26 and 27 says be not thou one of them that strike hands or of them that are sureties for debts if thou has nothing to pay why should he take away thy bed from under thee and so here is a a a warning um about putting your own family and finances at risk for the on behalf of those who can't pay because that's what striking hands or being sureties for debts that's like being a co-signer on a on a loan well often times if someone needs a cosigner this is not always true but many times if someone needs a cosigner that's because for some reason they're very likely they're not going to be able to pay that back of that loan back that's not always the case sometimes people need a co-signer because they don't have any credit history or they need to build credit or they should take some time and build credit before they get that loan they want or maybe it's a mortgage or whatever uh for some people it's um it might be that um you know someone's just like i talked to someone the other day at the credit union and um they were talking asking about setting up an appointment for an auto loan to apply for an auto loan and you know it's for an 18 year old and generally if if an 18 year old is is getting an auto loan they usually need a co-signer because they don't have an established credit history and maybe have some maybe they have a limited income so when it's a parent and child there are times in certain situations that it might be appropriate or or okay but here right here it's it's the there's more of a warning in the scripture about being surety then there is uh like okay go ahead and do it there's more of a warning a staunch warning against this so that should be something we take heed to uh of of being uh co-signers i mean it because here in verse 27 if thou has nothing to pay why should he take away thy bed from under thee so in other words you're putting your neck out but if you're not in a financial position to pay so if you were to be a co-signer with someone and there might be some situations where you can go in on something with someone else and it might be okay but i would even be cautious about parents and children depending on the character of the children in their own financial situation and how reliable they are just because they're your child doesn't mean you're obligated to co-sign for them there are some parents who say i'm not co-signing for any of my children on anything so but why should you take away that bed from under these so you definitely don't want to get involved in something that's going to stretch you and put your own home and family and livelihood and uh finances at risk and um so the big challenge is um you know there's some people they might not have just enough income they might not have the income just to meet that level of uh of of getting a loan particularly like a mortgage um for some it's just their credit report you know if someone has horrible credit you prob you definitely don't want to be sure a t for that person they have horrible credit um sometimes they have great credit it's just there's income issues or or various things but but anyway just don't put your own finances at risk for those who can't pay and uh and don't reward bad behavior don't don't back up people for bad behavior and um and that's oftentimes uh what it's i my my what we should do is if people want help with building up good credit you know they need to get some good counsel so we should be able to give them good financial counsel and financial advice instead and help them along here here's how you build it up and uh you they and oftentimes it's a character issue if they um if they if they have bad credit or sometimes people get bad credit because they had something out of their control happen but many people just have bad credit because they get themselves into bad situations and in trouble but he says it says be not thou one of them that strike hands or of them that are sureties for debts and so that's something we should stay clear of and not get entangled with that financially in verse 28 it says remove not the ancient landmark which thy fathers have set remove not the ancient landmark which thy fathers have set john gill commentator says uh calls it the landmark was the ancient border or boundary now there are oftentimes this verse is used as an application for like don't make uh we shouldn't have changes in society like don't remove the ancient landmarks things need to stay the same and there's a certain level of application to that but the actual meaning of the verse has to do with once again like cheating people um taking advantage of people and trying to gain more property unjustly or unfairly because that was a big deal to them the ancient border or boundary by which lands estates and inheritances were marked bounded and distinguished set by ancestors in agreement with their neighbors which to remove was contrary to a law and a curse is denounced upon those that did it in deuteronomy 1914 and was always wrecking the very heinous crime in early times this was so sacred a thing among the romans that they had a deity which presided over those bounds and had its name from them some apply this in a political sense to laws of long-standing and customs of long prescription and others interpreted in a theological sense of doctrines and practices settled by the fathers of the church which under which if understood of christ and his apostles only will be allowed but if of the ancient fathers of the church that followed them it should not be received since they were but fallible men and guilty of many errors and mistakes both in doctrine and practice and so there's the application of it so the initial interpretation the meaning here has to do with those boundaries that if there were ancient boundaries that were set in those agreements that were made they should be honored and and and abided by um we hear uh there was actually a court case in um the supreme court decided this in oklahoma very interesting recently just in the last month or two and um there was a native american who was uh i believe uh challenging his conviction i believe by the state i think he had been been prosecuted by the state and he was challenging that because he was saying that for legal purposes he was in native american territory and this was around tulsa i believe and for legal purposes basically the state of oklahoma had no jurisdiction over him because of a treaty or because of this land still technically legally belonging to the native americans and the supreme court actually ruled in his favor and said that yes for legal purposes about i think it was about two-thirds of oklahoma's native american land and so now technically as far as the deeds there are many other people who own that land now but for legal purposes they could not be prosecuted by the state of oklahoma it would have to be by the federal government i believe they could maybe bring federal charges against them but not the state because they're not they're in a sovereign jurisdiction as native american land and so that that was a case that came back to the ancient landmarks which was actually ruled in favor of the uh of the the native american who who challenged that another one was back in i was watching a documentary about the dakotas um and talking was going talking about the the native american land and the black hills and how the united states had broken its agreement with the native americans before that and and ended up taking the land that they originally said was going to be theirs forever and so so then later on congress i believe it was maybe back in the 80s if i remember correctly decided all right well they were actually wrong and they were treated unjustly and so we are going to pay them x amount of dollars for this land so this this indian tribe but the indian tribe has never accepted the money and so it's been sitting in it according to the documentary it's been sitting in account the federal government is keeping it formed it's earning interest and apparently it's grown a lot over time so if they ever wanted that money they could get it but in their minds no we don't want the money like for them it's the principle of the matter and they don't want the money so that comes back to the ancient landmarks and those are still matters of controversy today and i'm not getting into the who was right and who was wrong in all these situations but those ancient landmarks uh still come into play and here it says um it says that the it says remove not the ancient landmarks and so then the application also when you know i really think in our country we should adhere to the ancient landmarks which our founding fathers have set uh as far as our constitution and our declaration of independence they should be honored and followed and not to be removed for something else that is portrayed to be better but is really in the long run it's not better at all and then especially in the churches in christianity uh there are things that have been established and settled as far as sound doctrine as far as the uh the the faith and the gospel and uh the other the other doctrines of the bible uh things that have just been settled for millennia and uh those things should not be removed also there is a time for learning and there's times we adjust our thinking if we have a better understanding of what the bible says but as far as the there are just basic foundational doctrines of the bible that just don't change and number one is the fact that the bible should be our final authority for faith and practice it should not be just we pick and choose parts of the scripture we like and we don't like ignore the parts we don't like uh there there's the attack of the even the the inspiration of the scripture uh there's the attack of of the deity of christ uh there's the attack of the way of salvation there's the attack on uh baptism uh and so there are those attacks on those doctrines and and many other things but there's very those key doctrines uh that are should not be removed we need to stick with uh the things that are uh things that are right and the things that are good and pure and then the last verse verse 29 see is thou a man diligent in his business he shall stand before kings he shall not stand before mean men so the very simple principle here is that diligence leads to advancement diligence leads to advancement and so see us thou a man diligent in his business okay observe do you see him he's diligent in his business that's the his business is what he is undertaking in life what he's doing the tasks for the day and his affairs he shall stand before kings in other words there's advancement there there's elevation there and i'm a firm believer that there is a wide open opportunity for diligent christian people to excel in this world today i really think that why because the caliber of workers jordan might be able to attest to this the caliber of the worker workforce i in my opinion in a lot of places is getting worse and so there are certain fields where you have to have specialized education you know you have to have certain training um educa and you know qualifications that's that's fine but i think there's plenty of room even in a tough economy there's plenty of room for christians to excel in whatever area they're in whether it's the fast food industry whether it's the financial industry banking uh whether it's a factory whether it's someone who's got a trade of like a plumber an electrician or or someone who's a teacher um if so if a person is diligent in their business then that can lead to that leads to good things number one it's a good testimony for the lord and number two it just just from a human standpoint it leads to better things because you you're showing you're you're showing you're faithful and can be relied on and you're a hard worker and that's a those are good qualities to have and so one of the things that's changing in our uh maybe maybe uh maybe you've learned some of this along the way in the financial world in the industry but something that gets brought up at times that my manager talks about at work um is that you know things change things are changing in the financial industry and they're changing very quickly and even the effects of coronavirus and all the things along with that has accelerated a push to more technology and things done remotely and it's not the old fashioned where you just go to the bank or you go to the credit union and you just do everything in person anymore and that was already being pushed that way rapidly but it's really accelerated in a major way and so what do you do what then what if a person who's is just used to doing regular transactions and those transactions there's not as many of them anymore what do you need to do you gotta you gotta be diligent you gotta advance yourself you gotta you gotta expand your knowledge and that's one of the things that we're encouraged at work our manager is is just learn all you can learn all you can so you can position yourself to succeed in in a changing environment and that but that requires diligence it does require diligence and that's what we should it's a steady application and exertion of of performing our business performing whatever we're doing at that time diligence it's moving forward in in accomplishing what needs to be done and so i i believe that i believe it's a prime opportunity that there is still room for people to excel and succeed even in this economy and we don't know what the future is going to hold regarding uh the the economy and our country but uh but there's still there's still opportunities but you need to be diligent you need to be diligent you need to be humble too don't get puffed up in pride but be diligent especially and so we're going to end right there with with that with the end of proverbs 22 and so what area of this do you need to focus on in in your life and improve upon and maybe learn from maybe maybe you're maybe you get tossed to and fro in those ancient boundaries you don't recognize what the ancient boundaries are in the christian life in god's word and what constitutes a sound church and sound doctrine and and i will say this i didn't get into the right i wasn't getting into the right or wrong of of the us and the native americans there's a complicated history there but you know if there was you know if there was a promise made and then it was broken well obviously it's wrong to break promises you know it's wrong to break promises now i think you know how it all how everything is turned out for our country it's perhaps god had a purpose and plan for it all happening that way so i'm not going to try to guess what god's you know from god's perspective how he views it all other than the fact that you know it's wrong to not keep your word but we see that in our country today is with the complicated history and some of the controversies regarding that uh but we need to have some boundaries in our own life good biblical solid boundaries and be grounded in those and and we need to not be angry people ourselves be careful that we don't get close to angry people and let's apply our hearts to knowledge and to receive the words of truth and then we will be in a position to give those words of truth give the answers to others
