My close friend had lied to me all along about his company and his investments. He had taken a huge amount from me and a few others. He declared he is bankrupt, and needed time to return the money. I had taken a loan to give him the money and had to pay huge interests to the money lender if he didn’t return the money.My girlfriend cheated on me with her best friend. Within a week, I had lost everything. Financial and emotional stability vanished from my life.I was on sleeping pills, consuming alcohol, ignoring food for almost two weeks past the new year. Then, I saw one picture on my friend’s feed.My squadron, Delta in National Defence Academy. The building I had spent three years as a cadet and had vowed to make proud when I passed out.I asked myself what am I right now?Court Martialled due to mental instability. Jobless, heartbroken and broke. My degree was inconsequential but I had skills. I decided to wait for my close friend to get back with the money he had promised.I had excuses to give up but I ignored every excuse that came my way, because I remembered this building every single time.I was emotionally too weak but the vivid image of the building in my mind pushed me. Once the sun was up, I went out for a morning walk.That’s how I started developing new and productive habits, and a life-long chase of my self-care journey.Understanding the science behind habitsFirst of all, what’s a habit?A habit is an action that you take on a repeated basis with little or no required effort or thought. Self-Improvement: How can I motivate myself to work hard?
Six years ago I was so depressed I thought I would kill myself. I had nothing going on in my life. And the girl I was dating kept calling me "crazy", would break up with me every day, and refuse to introduce me to her friends. I had three failed businesses that year and the year before. And I was going to go broke with two kids to support. This past year, one of my investments sold for 4000% of my initial investment. A business I started went from $0 in revenues to $12,000,000 in eight months. I published two books and wrote 100s of articles and do 12 podcasts a week. But I don't work hard. I'm about to go get a sandwich. I slept late today. I don't say this because it's so great. I'd like to be a little more effective in my work. It's a practice and not a formula. Every day I practice. Here's what I do. If you don't like it, that's fine. I think each person has to find what works for them. I used to not do these things. And when I didn't do these things, nothing would happen. Life doesn't stand still: it either gets worse or better. Eventually it gets a lot worse. We die. That's the only real truth. But in the meantime, here's what I try to do to be successful and work harder. - NOTHING I don't read the News [ http://www.jamesaltucher.com/2012/07/go-on-a-news-diet-starting-today/?utm_ad=23048&utm_placement=146&utm_medium=15 ]. I used to work for the news. I know what happens there. The more you read news, the less informed you are, the more time you just wasted. No eating after 6pm (so my liver isn't on overdrive when I am trying to sleep). Plates at 10 inches. (Studies show when you reduce plate size from 15 inches to 10 inches, you eat 30% less calories). Note! If your plate size is 8.5 inches, you eat more - your body is not stupid. It knows you are tricking it. And that's it. The Plate Diet. Or the - not after 6pm Diet - MOVE A little exercise every day is known to have just as much effect on your mood as a full dosage of anti-depressants. - SLEEP In the morning, you have energy. At the end of the day, you don't. Which is why you need sleep. The average person needs eight hours of sleep. For instance, they took some famous orchestra and determined that the professional violinists in the orchestra were sleeping 8.6 hours a day. Don't think that less sleep makes you more productive. Whenever I get only six hours of sleep, I know the day is going to be useless. Preparation is how you win the game, and lack of sleep means you didn't prepare well. - GRATITUDE Worry never solves tomorrow's problems, and only takes energy away from today. Worry and Gratitude can't exist in the mind at the same time. Regret and Gratitude can't exist in the mind at the same time. Anger and Gratitude can't exist in the mind at the same time. Whenever I notice these things happening in my head, I try to replace with gratitude. Now I can continue my day - LAUGHTER The average child laughs 300 times a day. The average adult...five. Dr. Norman Cousins did a series of studies on the benefits of laughter. It improves health, cures disease, improves productivity, and of course, makes you happier. So I try to watch standup comedy when I'm low. Or thing of funny things. Laughter heals the soul. - SURRENDER Too often I would try to control things that were outside of my control. For instance, when a boss is yelling at me, it's his problem. I can't control him. So that's when I try to find a better job rather than put up with abuse. The same in relationships. One of the most important decisions you can make in life is who you spend your time with. It's like falling into an sea of hands and hoping they catch you. When you surround your self with good people, you can surrender that they will catch you. When you are creative, you can surrender to the fact that your ideas will always catch you. When you sleep well and are grateful, you can surrender to the fact that your good health and spiritual attitude, will guide you through the difficult moments. Whenever I'm scared, I surrender. I do my best. I'm honest. I know good things will happen. IDEAS I write down ten ideas every day. The Idea Muscle always needs to be exercised. It atrophies after about two weeks of no use. like any other muscle. People think that ideas are nothing and execution is everything. Execution is just a subset of ideas. You still have to have the ideas in order to execute. And the only way to have good ideas is to exercise the idea muscle. Every day. The result: your life will look completely different in six months. You will be an idea machine. You can be stuck on a highway in the desert with no gas and you will have 100 ideas to save you in no time. The idea machine is magic. FRIENDS The people in your life are like a bonsai tree. It's always growing. And every day you prune the bad branches and keep the good branches. Do that every day and you get more productive. Every entrepreneurial movement, every artistic movement, every leap in science, was done by a group of people. There are no lone geniuses. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had the HomeBrew Club. Jack Kerouac had the Beats Andy Warhol had his community of Pop artists. Even Larry Page had the thriving entrepreneurial cultures of both Stanford and Silicon Valley and all the search engines before him that he was able to stand on the shoulders of. A surgical procedure, trust me.We had an arranged married in 2010 and even after 3 of years of marriage; our sex life had issues. Which has also caused unnecessary friction in our marital life.It was primarily due to the fact that I had a condition wherein it caused pain while having intercourse resulting in no orgasm/ejaculation. I could never have sex for more than a minute due to pain (Yes it happened all this while, I was a prude guy and always thought that there was nothing wrong with me which prevented me from consulting a doctor).After 3 years of bad sex life and being childless due to my fault, wife left me and went back to her hometown. Due to some pressure from her parents regarding children; she broke down and told them that I’m impotent and couldn’t have sex properly.Her parents had a very orthodox mindset. Now they were considering divorce (since I’m supposedly impotent in their view) and a humiliation within my family, friends and relatives was in the offing.One day my mom had a mild fever (the greatest thing ever happened in my life), I took her to a local clinic and the doctor noticed me sitting dejected. He asked me if there is anything wrong, I spoke my heart out and told him everything regarding my sex life and how it’s now causing turbulence in my marriage. He took me to a room and asked all sorts of questions, like; does it erect fine, what happens when you insert your penis.Finally, he made me take off my pants, analyzed my penis’ structure and confirmed that I have a very minor condition called ‘Phimosis’ which can be fixed with circumcision (a surgical procedure). He was optimistic that it’ll help my sexual life as well. Spent 8000 rupees on the surgery (the best that I’ve ever spent on).Post the surgery (she doesn’t know at this time I had a surgery), I visited my wife after 2 months at her hometown to convince her to come back into my life, we’ve had heated argument and my wife finally said I’ll see if I can try convincing my parents about this, but she was giving me signs that our marriage might end sooner or later.Same night, we had a steamy make-up sex, enjoyed it thoroughly and whoa! For the first time I ejaculated inside her (one positive sign of the surgery, but I was still not sure if everything is good), returned to my home the next day. After a couple of months, I see my wife knocking at the door at 10:00pm and as soon as I saw her I had a bad feeling that her parents want us to be separated forever. She was silent for a while, took a shower and told me that she was hungry, I’ve ordered a pizza for her.She initiated the conversation by saying that my parents have certainly said mean things behind your back, tarnished your image and I extremely apologize this has happened. Finally she gave the most wonderful news in my life “I’m Pregnant” and words cannot express my joy that night. We cuddled and slept that night, she went on to deliver a healthy baby boy.I love my kid so much and pamper him a lot to this day; he’s the reason that fixed our marriage, he happened to be the grease between two rusty wheels you know. And one day when he grows up, I’ll certainly tell him this part of my life and make him understand how important he is to me.We’re expecting another baby this year and I hope it’ll be a girl (just to complete the circle).So, yeah, all you folks out there; never ever be shy or embarrassed about a situation in your life, always try taking advice from an expert.Who knows what could’ve happened had I not told the doctor about my condition that day, maybe ended up in a divorce and later if I had known that I had a very benign condition would’ve devastated me for life.A few things in life happen for a reason.

How do you keep yourself disciplined?
During the Indian Police Service (IPS) training, our daily morning PT (physical training) used to start with a warmup run of four laps (total 1.6 KM). It felt super hard in week one. We thought it will become easier once we got used to it, maybe after a few months.Here is the surprise: It never got easier. Running the four warmup laps was always painful, even when we were fit enough to do a cross country of 16 KM.The path of discipline is not easy, and will never be easy. Period.Why is it so hard to stay disciplined?Because we allow our mind to interfere in the path of discipline. Why do we fail to get up early in the morning? Because the mind says, “You are so tired and sleep deprived. Just sleep for 5 minutes more and it will be fine”. Then 5 becomes 10, and it is all the way downhill after that.We allow the fallacy that we will get up early or eat healthy or study well or do the right thing when we get used to it and it becomes a little easier.But it will NEVER get easier. It will never be easy to get up at 5 am, every single day of the year. Not now, not after 10 years.So what should you do? The answer is trivially simple, but also very hard. You have to stop listening to your mind. Just stop. No concession to what your mind says.When you have to do something hard, you have to become a robot. It does not matter how you feel. Who cares? Just execute the plan like a machine. That is the only way.If you decide to go for a run, get up and run. You will feel groggy and your legs will hurt. The pain you feel is exactly the pain everybody else feels. The pain of discipline is the price of happiness.People who win are those who keep going, regardless of how much it hurts.
