We like to think of Albert as "our true self" - the conscious part of our brain. He's the talking, reasoning part. When we decide to go to the gym or write that term paper, Albert made that decision. But Albert is old, easily exhausted, and switches off all the time. Your brain is locked in a battle of wills between a sleepy professor and an impulsive reptile with unlimited energy. I may be an outlier here, but practicing in front of a mirror never worked for me. I learned public speaking when I was a teenager. The thing that fixes that case of the nerves is confidence. Confidence comes from practice and preparation. As pretty much everyone has mentioned, if you know your material really well, it's much easier to present it. You need to know what level of detail your audience needs, and you need to think about organizing it so that it's most easily understood (and interesting). The whole thing needs to flow logically or you'll lose your listeners. If you're speaking ad hoc, it's especially important to organize your thoughts before you speak. You’ll feel more confident with a map of your message in your brain, I promise. Be as familiar with your “map” as you are with your content. Practice in front of people. Volunteer to speak as often as you can. If you have no particular reason to speak, recite from memory. This is useful socially – pick some poetry you like, or a really funny passage from a book (funny is best because you have to deliver it perfectly to avoid ruining the funny part). Memorize it and deliver it like you’re an actor in a play – use the inflections and body movements (within reason) that make the words feel true. If you do this, you’ll have a nice repertoire of material to deliver if the occasion arises (hot girl on the subway, awkward silence at thanksgiving…). I always had a bit of the blarney, so it wasn't so much about the speaking as it was about knowing what I look like while I'm speaking.Find a friend (or take a class, or record yourself) to watch you present - a "dry run" version of your material.
