How do you sign an electronic signature?
If you use a computer, you probably know the answer. But when I began my medical training, I was told that the answer was different. The "standard" answer was that the computer is not "really" a tool for signing documents. But the "standard" answer is not quite right.
In an e-mail, I sent this query to a friend who worked at the National Institutes of Health, the agency that funded my training:

I have been reading about how doctors should treat e-mails ( treat the e-mails as though they were actual documents, not just as messages on the Internet). After I received the paper version of my first medical record from the NIH, I took a pen and paper to the file and wrote the first two letters of each row, beginning with "Dr. Smith." Then I proceeded to the next rows, and wrote "Patient" in the same order, until the bottom of the paper. I copied the entire row, and then folded it back up, placed the paper in a plastic baggie, and put the plastic baggie in front of the file.
I then opened the file in an office-size computer, and signed the top of the file by hand, using the "standard" way to sign, which is to place your thumb on an upwar...
