all right in this video we're going to do a quick comparison of the Union and the Confederate States during the Civil War looking at which side may have had an advantage and how the war concludes you're going to follow along on the note sheet filling in the blanks and then on the second page there's a sort of north-south sort so you're going to use the information in the presentation to identify which advantages the north had and which advantages the south had we're gonna start by looking at the military advantage I'm not going to read everything on the slide for you I'll just let you look at the slide but it's very clear based on the statistics available that the Union the north is going to have superior Navy over the South the south will however take some officers from the US Army or from the Union they will resign their positions and join the Confederacy robert e lee is one of those examples and they also have a slight military training advantage over the north right there are more military colleges in the south than in the north grant he is an important leader of the Union forces during the Civil War he has many successful campaigns on the western front of the Civil War he's going to become the US commander of the Union forces and he's known for being willing to sacrifice soldiers to win battles and he will later become President of the United States robert e lee is a famous Confederate leader he is a high ranking officer in the army when the war breaks out and he is against secession the South seceding and he is against slavery as well but he makes the very difficult decision to side with his state Virginia resigns his position in the US Army and commands the Confederate forces as far as the man our advantage the North had a significantly higher population the South's population about a third of it is slave population as far as manufacturing goes right we know that the north is more industrial than the south most of the factories are in the north that's going to give them the advantage when it comes to manufacturing weapons to be used in the Civil War as far as transportation we know that the North has more railroads than the south also potential advantage for the north the connection with the Midwest via the canals and Road or fun Pike's that connect the Midwest to the north will also be an advantage to the north as far as the financial advantage goes the north has a Treasury and can print money they're receiving revenues based on tariffs they have powerful banks that can loan money to the Union if necessary and the south of course they're dependent on cash crops and trade with Europe to to create revenue from those cash crops what's going to an impact at is that the union's Navy blockades southern ports making it very difficult for them to trade with Europe as far as for strategies winning the war the North's plan was known as the Anaconda plan they're gonna blockade at southern ports take control of the Mississippi River and sort of wrap like a snake around the southern states to sort of strangle or limit their access to resources the goal is to keep Europe out of the war to keep Europe from potentially siding with the south the South strategy for war is to be very very picky when it comes to battles they're going to avoid large battles with the north they're going to fight a war of attrition hoping to slowly wear down the Union make the war unpopular the union and force the Union to negotiate with the south both sides are going to use the draft or conscription to draft men into service this is going to hurt in the north wealthy individuals could buy their way out of the draft or have someone fight sort of in in their place in the Civil War so the poor of the north are going to be disproportionately affected by the draft and it's unpopular among Democrats the idea that young men or men in general were being forced to fight but the Confederate states are going to do the same thing they're gonna use conscription to force men to fight Lincoln suspends habeas corpus this also happens in the Confederate States but as a result of the draft or conscription there's a lot of violence people are speaking out against the conscription and against the war so Lincoln suspends habeas corpus meaning that means a person could be imprisoned without being charged or given a trial okay so if someone is sort of agitating against the War Lincoln could throw that individual in jail without giving them a trial or charging them with a crime this is gonna cause a lot of people to criticize Lincoln of course we know this is contradictory to the bill of rights of the Constitution but the Confederate states do the same thing suspending habeas corpus during wartime many people on the North and the South are worried about their financial crisis in 1862 the Union is able to create a currency known as greenbacks and begins printing that currency and the Confederate states are going to print and use their own form of currency battles of Gettysburg is a turning point battle a very important battle in Pennsylvania southern Pennsylvania generally marched into Pennsylvania he was hoping to bring the war to the North causing people to side against war to cause conflict within the Union it's one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War there are nearly 8,000 soldiers that are killed in 27,000 that are wounded in the end the Confederate forces are defeated and they have to turn back to Virginia and this is the last chance the South will have to invade the north again they won't they won't cross into the north an attack or be on the offensive they're on the defense from this point forward after the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 it's also a famous battle because a few months later Lincoln Davout delivers the Gettysburg Address in November as they're dedicating the battlefield as a National Cemetery it is one of the most famous speeches given in US history even though it is one of the shorter speeches that's given on the next slide I have the text for the Gettysburg Address but you're also going to listen to the Gettysburg Address okay so unfortunately my link did not work as for listening to the Gettysburg Address but I will post the audio if you want to hear a performed version of the Gettysburg Address as given by Abraham Lincoln to memorialize the the battlefield at Gettysburg so the end of the war comes in 1865 general leave the Confederate forces realizes that victory is hopeless for the Confederate States he surrenders to grant at Appomattox Courthouse to prevent further death in two weeks later the last Confederate forces surrender at Durham North Carolina and the war is officially over that same year in the spring of 1865 the Lincoln is assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington DC he's assassinated by a gentleman named John Wilkes Booth he escaped capture for 12 days after assassinating Lincoln but then he was hunted down and killed by Union forces he was angry at Lincoln's support for voting rights for African Americans after the Civil War is over and the Confederacy has lost the Civil War so it's just our really quick recap of the Civil War itself some of the advantages and disadvantages of both the north and the south and how the war concludes
