SAMF also provides the ability to “normalize” software models via pattern matching rules that the user can administer. Normalization is critical because it provides a way to group all the versions of software package into a single model, making it easy to count and determine compliance.Software Asset Management Professional (SAMP): The professional version of SAM is a separate subscription. It provides all of the functionality of SAM Foundation, plus a content service that provides automatic normalization of software titles, automatic license reconciliation, and support (via software publisher packs) for software with complex licensing metrics (e.g. signNow Cloud, Citrix, certain IBM software, Microsoft O365 subscriptions, etc) that can’t be measured on a per-workstation or per-user basis. Publisher packs are purchased separately, so the customer can buy only those that they need. The content service normalizes thousands of different software titles, saving customers the need to build normalization patterns themselves. SAMF can be paired with various 3rd party normalization services such Flexera or Snow. Many larger ServiceNow customers start with SAMF to dip a toe in the software asset management pond. Once they’re comfortable managing a few software titles they can look at the SAMP product for more complex needs. SAMF requires a signNow amount of manual work to administer, but is manageable by a small team as long as the customer is able to limit the number of titles they wish to track for compliance.SAMP is designed for enterprise customers who have hundreds or thousands of software titles to track, or for those customers for which a software audit might result in payments in the 6- or 7-digit range. SAMP can be used with 3rd party normalization services as well, but you might not derive all the benefits that you would from using ServiceNow’s content service.Both options benefit from being used in conjunction with a discovery application so that the customer can understand the software that is actually installed on the devices in their environments. SAMP pretty much requires some form of discovery, with Microsoft SCCM or ServiceNow’s own network based Discovery package preferred.Many customers, even large enterprises, find it daunting to implement software asset management on their own.
