years and there's plenty of jobs out there too lots of companies can't hire enough people especially in blue-collar industries like trucking and construction in technology and in high-level healthcare if you don't have a job now and you're looking it shouldn't be long until you get one if you've been out of work for a long time you're likely lazy except for very special circumstances so the economy is booming and companies can't grow fast enough to keep up with demand but of course there's gonna be some states where the job scene is the worst not always terrible but somebody has to finish last right in today's video we're gonna tell you which dates are the worst for jobs and where job growth is falling behind but we're also going to give you some great ideas on some cool jobs that you can apply for and probably get hired for immediately too because we like to give back like that so get off the couch and put on a tie as we bring you the worst states for jobs with job assistance heigh-ho is currently 4.1 percent the 12th highest in the nation but we factored in more than just a current snapshot of the job situation to cast a wider picture we also measure job growth the past year there are 12 states with negative job growth right now and 3 where job growth is zero Oregon is one of those 3 so a 4.1 percent unemployment rate and a zero job growth rate means Oregon's job quotient is 4.1 just last month Oregon added only about 200 jobs following a loss of 900 jobs in month prior most of those job losses were in retail the previous 5 years had been great for the Oregon job market as the state averaged a gain of 3 thousand jobs a month during that time but if you're in the healthcare or manufacturing industries those are still growing fast in the beaver State off you go and your rock and ride as you pull into the always economically bullied state of West Virginia no surprises at West Virginia's towards the bottom when it comes to jobs the mountain state's 4.7 percent unemployment rate is the fifth worst in the country but West Virginia's job growth has been kind of study growing at 0.4 percent which is actually the sixth highest rate in the u.s. that gives West Virginia a job quotient score of 4.3 now let's compare that to our best state for jobs in the u.s. a Colorado which has a 2.7 percent unemployment rate any 0.8 percent job growth rate for a job quotient of 1.9 the state with the lowest unemployment rates Vermont we're only 2.2 percent of the populations out of work New Jersey and Alabama are tied with Colorado with the best current job growth rates back to West Virginia the construction industry here has been the fastest growing of all despite the fact that there are more people leaving the state than moving to it leisure and hospitality jobs like hotels and entertainment are growing here logging and mining traditional blue-collar industries have lost jobs across the nation blue-collar jobs are booming and they can't find enough people to fill the openings much of that's because so many kids spend four years earning a liberal arts degree only leave college with debt and low-paying entry-level positions blue-collar jobs just aren't cool another factor for a lack of blue-collar growth people can't pass drug or background tests which date is our eighth worse for jobs Kentucky is hey why are you at the bar shouldn't you be looking for a job here in Kentucky the unemployment rate is four point four percent which is the seventh highest rate and the job growth is minus 0.1 percent minus point one percent means that there have been a loss of about 18,000 jobs over the last year here like other states Kentucky's job gains came in health care education and manufacturing and the state saw job losses in mining and similar dips in manufacturing jobs of course the auto industry is a big deal in Michigan but slowing sales and rising inventories are leading to slight production costs and job losses basically people are buying less cars lately however if you're a Michigan resident you're not motivated enough to be retrained there's a lot of jobs here that are currently open there were three thousand eight hundred and forty seven jobs listed on Monster but the best jobs are on Craigslist like you could be a door - driver and deliver food for lazy people you could be a telephone political interviewer whatever that is or you could be a bed-warmer and make eighty-three thousand dollars what the what the what the okay so you get paid to lay in somebody's bed and warm that up for them besides really rich people apparently some hotels will hire people to wear full-body fleece and roll around in your bed for five minutes before you get to your room what is going on here people off you go to our fifth worst state for jobs Washington why are you at the casino you don't have a job I hope you're not using your welfare check to gamble in Washington the unemployment rate is four point six percent the sixth highest in the nation and the job rate has shrunk by minus 0.2 percent in the last year the state of Washington saw a net loss of 1600 jobs in the last reporting month the largest job growth was in retail technology and construction manufacturing jobs are down here too unlike other states we've seen Washington lost jobs in education in health care one interesting side note is Seattle's a minimum wage hike to $15 an hour it actually made things worse for the Seattle economy because of the standardized new law pay rate increase businesses were forced to cut back on the number of hours they employed people meaning they hired less people overall conservatives were quick to point out that this was another failed experiment in socialism here in the state of Arizona the unemployment rate is really low at four point nine percent but the job growth rate is climbing over the last year Arizona did add 27,000 jobs which is about average I actually did hear that Karen mappy apparently the state's quickly growing population is adding retail construction and manufacturing jobs at a quick pace so maybe Arizona won't be on this list next year hey so how do you feel about mappy wanting is tied with Arizona at four point nine percent however unlike Arizona which is making strides New Mexico's job growth rate was essentially zero so that means 1 in 20 people's out of work here and will likely remain out of work for the foreseeable future on the bright side we did some digging for you New Mexicans here's a handful of the 13,000 720 open jobs right now in the Land of Enchantment you can be a ranch hand you'll have to muck stalls clean water buckets feed horses and you have to have experience working with shavings whatever that is you can be a bean native-american line cook well by you I mean if you're female and Native American are you allowed to discriminate like that here's a good one you could be a sign holder it pays about 12 bucks an hour I'm sure there's no drug test for that that's your thing okay so you're almost done on your bad state job crawl the next two states are far worse than the other ones we talked about next ups Alaska which has the nation's highest unemployment rate at 6.2 percent that's almost twice the national average there's a few reasons for Alaska's high jobless rate Alaska has a lot of seasonal jobs that only happen in the summer that includes tourism commercial fishing and firefighting plus a lot of people in Alaska tend to fend for themselves so they remain unemployed longer and stay alive by using their brains and brawn however on the bright side the job growth rate here is 0.3 percent so that's promising that means you could drive around Alaska and probably find a job if you looked hard enough perhaps something that has to do with plowing or logging fishing whoa but someone just hits you and my Pinto just exploded you just exploded my pin oh how are you gonna show up for your interviews now you know I just leave the car there it's worthless I'll get another pin out all right so you're finally at the end of the road since you don't have a job and you don't have a car now you have to explore our final state by city bus we're in Mississippi here in the Magnolia state the unemployment rates a little bit better than Alaska at five point five percent however Mississippi has seen a minus 0.5 percent job decline in the last year the worst in the nation what's interesting is that right next door in Alabama things are going in the opposite direction and Alabama they've done a good job cultivating industries like aerospace and cars Mississippi continues to rely on low-wage manufacturing and the state's large unskilled workforce has made it tough to expand company growth only 25% of Mississippi residents if they could find qualified workers I think the biggest takeaway is a four-year liberal arts degree is not as valuable as it once was there's a bunch of great high-paying jobs out there people we just need to develop the skills to fill them and if you're out of work and actively looking for a job then why did you spend 13 minutes watching this video try and do something nice for somebody today
