after senate passed the 1.9 trillion dollar stimulus package now it heads up to house for final approval majority leader nancy pelosi tweeted today as a day of great progress as the senate democrats passed american rescue plan to save lives and livelihoods we now urge republicans to join us in recognition of the imminent need for decisive action and to fulfill the promise that help is on the way help is on the way a robust basket of a hundred billion dollars is for those of you who have been awaiting vaccines help is on the way we'll receive a fourteen hundred dollar check in the mail in the next few weeks help is on the way to museums to theaters to restaurants help is on the way to so many other to people who can't feed their kids or worry about being evicted from their homes help is on the way white house press secretary jan pasakhi said biden kept his promise of delivering help to american citizens the president is on the verge on track to sign into law the most progressive bill in american history that's going to uh cut and cut in half child poverty this year that's going to make the biggest investment in child care since world war ii that's going to get those checks you talked about into the hands of 160 million americans yes there were changes that's democracy in action he didn't cut the bill in half he kept true to his 1.9 trillion dollar package and we're looking forward to signing it into law i will say for the agenda moving forward look the president knows that there are uh critics uh there are those who disagree with him but what he's confident in is that his ideas and his vision for moving the country forward is something the american people agree with and we saw that in the polls as it relates to the american rescue plan here is update on who will be eligible for 1 400 stimulus checks and when you will be receiving it who is getting the 1400 stimulus check and when will it hit their bank accounts alex to the second point the treasury department tells me it has already been working to make preparations and in preparation for passage of this law and they will try to get that money out as soon as possible no more detail than that now as for who gets this check individuals who make up to seventy five thousand dollars a year will get the full fourteen hundred dollars couples um that make up to a hundred and and uh fifty thousand dollars a year gonna get twenty eight hundred between the two of them after that there's a steep cliff so individuals up to 80 000 will get some money couples up to 160 000 will get some money what about the people who got checks last time you're saying that some will not get it now i mean has it been amended to that degree that is correct alex in the previous round of some stimulus checks uh earners of eighty thousand dollars to a hundred thousand dollars got some money they won't this time around couples who make a hundred and sixty thousand to two hundred thousand got some money last time they will not get money this time this was part of a compromise between president biden and moderate democrats who wanted the bill more narrowly targeted by said he was not going to compromise on the top line number of 1400 but he did get that limitation and and parents do parents get extra money for kids yes so the 1400 is also available for every child they uh the family gets an extra 1400 now again if you're getting less than that per person you'll probably get less than that for your kids but dependents will also get money including by the way adult dependents okay what if someone lost their job last year and and they're making less money now will they will that be known i mean how would they be able to qualify for this this is very important alex because everyone who lost their job last year or saw their income decrease during the pandemic the way for them to get the maximum amount of money is to file their tax returns as soon as possible if it is processed by the irs in time before these checks go out the door that's the income level that they'll base it on otherwise they'll base it on 2019 income which was before the pandemic so people who lost their jobs might miss out on money if they don't file their tax returns very soon that is a very very good point okay so jobless benefits sahil the senate certainly scaled back on those in the negotiations yesterday but they did add this tax relief provision what what is that all about what's it change for the people who are receiving the benefits that's right so the senate reduced the house's unemployment benefits from 400 a week to 300 a week again as part of a compromise to get moderate democrats on board but what they did add is a provision that makes the first ten thousand two hundred dollars of jobless benefits tax-free for incomes under 150 000 so it's a bit of a weedy concept basically a lot of people who got jobless benefits will not be taxed for it and it'll probably be a pleasant surprise for them or potentially avoidance of an unpleasant surprise white house communication director said we have enough votes in-house to pass the 1.9 trillion dollars bill to become law on tuesday march 9. as you know it will only take five democrats in the house to tank the bill two moderates already voted no the first time do you have enough votes well this is a historic and transformational piece of legislation that the senate just passed it is going to cut child poverty in half in part by making a historic investment in the child tax credit it's going to fund a vaccine program that is going to get this virus under control it's going to get money out to schools so they can reopen so that kids can go back to to school and we're not losing a generation of of kids to um to this crisis so look this is an incredibly transformational frankly progressive piece of legislation you heard senator sanders say that this was the best piece of legislation for working people in the modern history of this country this is a bill that reflects president biden's belief that the best way to get the economy back on track and get it growing is to invest in working people and middle class people so you know this is a reflection this is a reflection of president biden's values it is urgent aid that is going to help people all across the country but it's also making a long-term investment in helping working people and middle-class people get back on their feet so we're very hopeful we are we are we are very hopeful that the house is going to move quickly to pass this legislation i get that you think it's a major piece of progressive legislation the question is what about congressman bowman what about congresswoman talib are they going to vote for it so i'll ask you again do you have the votes well they'll they'll make that judgment we certainly hope so again i think if you look at what their constituents need if you look at what people all across this country need the american rescue plan addresses that it gets it's going to get 1400 checks into the hands of 85 percent of households in this country that's the single biggest direct payment uh in the i think in the modern history of the country but this is money that working people need you know for a family of four making a hundred thousand dollars they're gonna get uh just over five thousand dollars in direct payments that's money that that people need to get back on back on their feet there's money for small businesses in this package so i think you know if you're a member of congress and you're looking to what is the best thing that you can do quickly to help people in your district i think it's passing this bill so we're certainly hopeful that the house is going to move quickly we have two different giveaways first
