hi my name is Jake and today I'm going to be doing a short presentation about mainframes and cloud services in the banking sector so first of all banking in general is a very important aspect of everyday life people are constantly sending receiving and managing their money in time banks have really come to grow in efficiency in the way that they conduct business whether it be with the customers front end or even back in behind the scenes and this is all thanks to technology and it's exactly where mainframes and cloud services fit into the picture so what are mainframes exactly mainframes are large supercomputers which are designed to manage store and process large amounts of data which is good for companies with a lot of customers in one which being the bank or banks in general okay so how are these mainframes used in banks so banks work alongside ATMs F Post terminals bank teller systems things like that which they're basically technologies which engage in you're plenty of sort of transactions purchases withdrawing money depositing money refunds that sort of thing so the good thing about mainframes is it's a system which has been tried and tested time in and time out so you know they've been my friends have been working with banks for around 60 years so it's really a long time and so they've really proven themselves to be a reliable source IBM have actually done a study in 2018 that 92 banks out of a hundred are actually still utilizing the services of mainframe so that's really good for the mainframes on a negative note you know disadvantage of easy mainframes is it's a bit energy consuming so since it is so if you imagine a mainframe it's a large computer sitting in a room in on premises of an organization you know big computer running 24 hours a day so with that with that mainframe running there's usually aircon in the room just to keep a safe temperature to avoid the computer from overheating so if the mainframe is running how the air comes running it does consume a bit of energy so that's the downside now cloud computing on the other hands cloud computing is a way of computing through the internet online and that utilizes large databases which provide hardware services programming services and even information resource services how are these cloud services used in banks so could be used with with to detect fraudulent behavior fraudulent transactions getting to know customers personally and future services and developments and testing and that sort of thing so you know those three are basically summed up with data analytics so you know the it's you cloud services you know taking data taking large amounts of data to identify patterns and trends to see for example where improvement is needed and where it's not needed so the good thing about the good thing about cloud services is that it's it really it is really cheap in the sense of it's very good with saving money unlike the mainframe mainframe is more of a physical entity the cloud service is more of a virtual entity so you know you're not paying for electricity that's going on 24 hours a day this one is just a matter of logging on the bank logging on and then you're in Europe and going online and there's also the paper use feature as well so you know you don't have to estimate what hardware you need you just use for what you need the downside of cloud computing services is it's it's a new concept it is a new concept and another one is there is the dropouts for either being the internet or the actual cloud provider itself you know big even big names big cloud providers have issues with with dropouts in 2015 Apple actually went down their service actually went down for seven hours which means which meant that the customers actually couldn't access their stored files on their cloud and also couldn't access emails
