so a lot of people are moving out of new jersey what's one place they're moving to well it's north carolina so do you want to find out why well i'm discussing all those reasons coming up next [Music] because every week i have new videos about anything and everything bergen county as well as northern new jersey so in this week's video i'm talking about why people are actually leaving the garden state versus staying here sure new jersey is getting a major influx of people coming from the new york city area of the five boroughs and reasons why people come to new jersey it is actually cheaper to live here in northern new jersey versus living in new york city for instance but maybe after 5 10 15 years or so you've decided you know something it's time to leave the state and one of the states that people from new jersey are looking at and moving to is actually north carolina so if you do a little poking around on the internet some studies have been done recently about folks leaving new jersey new jersey actually has the highest percentage of people leaving the state with up to 69 the second state that sees the highest amount is actually new york so from a short-term perspective new yorkers are coming to new jersey maybe to live here for a few years 5 10 15 years maybe longer but perhaps life events or retirement thoughts or just a change of pace is calling you and people start considering other places to live so what's causing people to leave new jersey one of the biggest reasons is either a job change or just a job relocation there's a lot of industry that's in north carolina and people are looking for opportunities just to maybe have a different change of pace so they might consider looking for a job transfer with their current job north carolina can also be a great place from a retirement standpoint also there's a lower cost of living in north carolina which is very appealing to many people so let's get into some of the reasons why folks from new jersey have decided to leave the state and head to north carolina so perhaps the biggest reason which is reason number one why people are leaving new jersey for north carolina it's the cost of living if you do some research on the internet you can actually find some cost of living calculators that are out there and what's really interesting to see is if you put in the city where you live now let's say you're living here in new jersey and then compared to a town or a city in north carolina the data that you're going to discover and find is really interesting one of your biggest expenses is typically a house purchase and if you just do a cost comparison so if i look at a town like paramus new jersey here in bergen county and then do some searches on various cities and towns in north carolina you're actually going to see a major difference between the house prices down there versus heat so using paramus new jersey as an example the median household price and paramus is around the 500 range high 500s so using one of these cost calculators if we look at a city like raleigh north carolina for instance the typical house price is there in the high 200s if we look at nearby durham you're going to find houses in the mid 200s wilmington and charlotte also have about mid 200 000 house price range as well head out more west to winston-salem you're actually going to find high 100s to low 200s there and then if you look at a city like cary which is near raleigh durham your prices are actually going to be a little bit higher probably in the mid to higher 300s but there you're getting a lot for your money in fact all these places you're getting a lot more for your money lower price per square footage more land and the further out you go from these major cities in north carolina your home prices are actually going to be cheaper but even when you look at other expenses like your taxes for instance are much lower in north carolina grocery bills restaurants utilities all of those major expenses that we all have they're actually cheaper much cheaper in north carolina so it's a big draw for many folks here in new jersey to consider it as a place to move next but since the cost of living is so much cheaper and let's say you sell something here in new jersey that profit that you make really can get you something nice perhaps larger that you might want or even smaller if you're looking to retire in that area so you definitely can get a lot more for your money in north carolina versus what you might get here in new jersey so reason number two why people move to north carolina from new jersey the topography is actually pretty similar so sure north carolina is a pretty big state much bigger than new jersey but what's interesting is that the topography is actually pretty similar and let's face it new jersey does get a bad rap so if you fly into newark liberty international airport in the newark area you're not really going to get a great sense of new jersey a lot of industry there it's not necessarily the nicest of areas and on certain days there's kind of a faint smell of i don't even know but seriously if you make your way just west or north or south of that area you're going to find beautiful places in new jersey so we've got beautiful mountains we've got the delaware water gap here in new jersey for hiking there's skiing available here and of course the new jersey shore area has such a reputation for just being beautiful and everybody goes there over the summer but as you make your way west the north you can find some great charming small towns like chester new jersey or long valley that that just have great little restaurants and antique shopping so if we actually compare north carolina to new jersey they're actually kind of similar north carolina has a beautiful coastline as well from the beautiful outer banks area all the way down to wilmington north carolina has a beautiful coastline and similar to new jersey the further west that you go you're going to find some beautiful landscapes mountain areas hiking trails parks and quaint charming little towns like pinehurst and hillsboro continue west north carolina you're going to find the blue ridge mountains there you've got mount mitchell which is actually one of the highest points here east of the mississippi and another popular area is the great smoky mountain national park as well so north carolina definitely has larger cities but smaller country areas as well so there definitely are some similarities in regards to the topography between new jersey as well as north carolina all right the third reason why people leave new jersey for north carolina it's the weather after a while i mean let's be honest shoveling snow is not fun cold winters and being stuck in your house with dry skin and high heat it really can just be not fun so weather is definitely another deciding factor for folks moving to north carolina from new jersey the winters there don't last as long and north carolina doesn't tend to get the amount of snow that new jersey gets sure during the winter months it could be cooler there it's not going to be 80 degrees like in florida but you might not see that extreme cold that we tend to get here in the northeast during the winter months although the summers can be a little bit more humid potentially but let's face it new jersey gets very humid in the summer as well residents of north carolina enjoy a longer period of warmer weather but one advantage you do have if you've lived here in new jersey through major snowstorms hopefully you know how to drive in snow those folks who might have been born and raised in north carolina maybe not so much you might see some nervousness on the road if there's ice or snow that might fall in north carolina so you just want to keep that in mind you have you kind of have the upper hand if you know how to drive in snow all right reason number four why people are leaving new jersey for north carolina there's a lot of industry down there so i mentioned at the top of the video that job transfers are probably one of the number one reasons why people leave the state of new jersey and what north carolina is seeing are job transfers because people are starting to decide you know something maybe it makes sense if i could just move with my company down to north carolina and maybe have less expenses and just live a different lifestyle there's a lot of industry that's available in north carolina one of the big ones is tourism so not only are you getting a lot of let's say spring and summer travelers who are up and down the coast of north carolina but with some of the larger cities in north carolina as well as those national parks and just the blue ridge mountains tourism is a rather large industry in the state other industries include pharmaceutical and biotech so maybe you've heard of the research triangle park area of north carolina so that includes the chapel hill durham as well as raleigh and in that triangle in that space you're finding a lot of pharmaceutical companies as well as biotech companies and having those companies having those jobs available have really raised property values in that area as well one of the towns that i mentioned before is cary which is in that research triangle park area a lot of people choose cary to live but also work in these pharma or biotech companies which has really increased the real estate value in that market banking and finance are also huge in north carolina in fact bank of america has a major headquarters in the charlotte area you'll also find major energy companies in north carolina as well one of the largest utility companies is duke energy as an example two more big industries within north carolina are education and health care as well with nationally and internationally well-known universities like duke you've got the unc school system north carolina state as well as wake forest other universities and colleges so not only do you have these well-recognized educational institutions but many of them have health care systems tied to those school systems one of the other big industries is furniture manufacturing in north carolina larger furniture companies like raymour and flanagan as well as ethan allen actually have manufacturing plants so a lot of industries available in north carolina if you are considering a move from new jersey all right and the final reason why people are leaving new jersey for north carolina there's been such a change and dramatic increase of arts and culture in north carolina more and more the state has seen a high diverse population coming into the state so there's a lot of folks moving in coming from the northeast for instance the larger cities are seeing just a huge increase in art galleries theater and the art scene as well just walk around downtown raleigh there's some incredible restaurants there the art scene is amazing and is continuing to grow and more and more independent small theaters continue to pop up in that area as well craft beers are also huge in north carolina it's almost like it's become like a little portland oregon so in cities like asheville or charlotte you're really seeing a presence of more and more craft breweries as well as craft beers in those areas of course when it comes to the culture of north carolina you can't not talk about barbecue the barbecue motto for north carolina is low and slow and with that diversity influx you can find a smattering of restaurant types all over the state so a lot of diversity a lot of culture popping up left and right in many areas of north carolina all right so there you go some reasons why people are actually moving out of new jersey and considering north carolina as i said at the beginning of the video that cost of living factor is huge for many people who are considering a move out of the state of new jersey but also the change of pace and the opportunities that are available really could be appealing and like i said north carolina is not much different in regards to let's say the landscape and the topography you've got a beautiful coastline and many of the things that you're able to do in new jersey you can also do in north carolina north carolina really has some positive attributes and it might be a great place for you to
