Fail:DropboxDropbox is great. I use it and love it. However, they got hit by every founders nightmare. The bigger guy coming in and crushing them. Even with their $10 billion valuation, they can't compete with Google. Google is just better at everything they do than them. I love Dropbox, but unfortunately I don't see a path forward for them without pivoting. Succeed:UberUber has almost managed to achieve a too big to fail status. They're huge. Large enterprise clients love them, their smaller customers love them and their investors love them. Plus, Travis Kalanick doesn't take no for an answer. The IPO market has been bad for the past 18-24 months, so I don't see any reason for them to rush there. They have more than enough private funding, and should they need more, they will have no problem raising it.Can go either way:SnapchatSnapchat is a great product, if you're under 20. If you're over 20, and not named Gary Vaynerchuk, you're probably still trying to figure out how to best utilize snapchat. Evan Spiegel has built an excellent platform. But the question is, how much are advertisers willing to pay for space on a platform where everything disappears. It's a unique idea that the younger generation has embraced, however, they have yet to prove their revenue model. And at the end of the day, that's the most important thing. Another thing about Snapchat is that they're beyond the point of acquisition. Employee Experience Curators: They say it is going to be a “gig economy” – multiple types of employees and employment patterns emerging with the evolving business ecosystem. Diversity emerges not only in terms of gender or race but in terms of employment types like free lancing, assignment-based, virtual working and so on. To accommodate and encourage this diverse population, HR professionals need to gear up and curate experiences through the employee lifecycle that engage their employees by motivating & connecting with them in a way that inspires the individual. The challenge that HR will have is to understand their employee personas and build the work place infrastructure, policies, processes and engagements tailored for individuals as opposed to the mass-made approach. Change Evangelists: Transformation is not a singular process anymore… it is a phenomenon that is continuous and evolving. HR will be at the bedrock of this transformation and drive it as evangelists of this change through the organization in an agile manner - as and when a change is called for, the wave must emerge through all the people practices of the organization to enable the organization to turn with the tide. Strategic Business Partners: Being business partners in the real sense – speaking the language of business, understanding what the customer expects and building people practices & culture to cater to that need is what is expected in the HR. It can no longer be limited to recruitment, training, transactional processing… it has to evolve to actively be involved in business decisions. If you are stuck in traffic (but not driving), catch up on your reading list, listen to a good podcast, or reply to your emails and social media messages. Almost half of my daily reading is done during coffee breaks, while cooking dinner, or on my way to and from office. You can also catch up on the news by switching on your TV or on an audio news app in the morning while working out, eating breakfast, or getting ready.#2. Automate the mundane stuffAnytime you come across an activity that needs to be done on a regular, or semi-regular basis, it is always worth the time and effort to automate it.For example, you can use a host of recipes from IFTTT, to achieve this. Be it syncing and backing up your mails, social media data, and your phone content, or creating a custom news feed for yourself depending on your interest. #3. FILTERSThe current state of things, and primarily information generation, leaves most of us overwhelmed.A few months ago, I spent more than 2 weeks cleaning up my multiple mailboxes. I went through all emails in my inbox, deleted the useless ones, archived and categorized the important ones, blocked and unsubscribed from hundreds of mailing lists, set up rules and filters to auto archive or delete emails that fit the criteria.
