Why do people use big words?
I speak English and to a lesser extent, Spanish. I use whatever words I can to express myself in Spanish(while I’m not fluent, I am conversational and can ask how to say a word or concept in Spanish and understand the answer) but in English I have more options.I read a lot. I mean, A LOT. I have a voracious appetite when it comes to fiction and educational literature.See what I did there? I could have said that I love to read novels and text books, but that doesn’t quite convey the same meaning, and is not in fact precisely what I meant. A voracious appetite conveys a lot more meaning and emotion than the alternative AND just so happens to more perfectly fit what I’m trying to say. Then there’s educational literature as opposed to text books. I’d have to go through every different type of educational literature(Computers, Chemistry, Biology, Hacking, Math, Programming, Hardware, Technology, Engineering, books, tutorials, guides, magazines, articles, etc, etc, etc) in order to say every type I read and like, or I can just use TWO big words, educational and literature. This is only an example, but if one has working knowledge of a word or concept, why not use it? It actually requires fewer letters/words and is much more accurate if used properly.Anyways, I read a lot. If I don’t understand a word(which wasn’t very often even in my younger years, I’ve always had a large vocabulary and a firm grasp of my native language) then I look it up. I write it down(that’s how I learn; read it then write it down). Shazam! I now have another word in my arsenal that I can use when necessary/appropriate. I can now express myself that much more efficiently and can convey my thoughts and emotions better than before. I use this approach in every facet of my life. If I don’t know, I look it up and learn it.When I read this question, when I’ve come across this question and it’s ilk in the past, it’s usually because someone is insecure of themselves and their own intelligence, or jealous of someone else. I’ve come across a lot of people throughout my entire life that have remarked upon this and I’ve had a ton of conversations about this issue, some good and constructive, most not. Having a large vocabulary, “using big words”, is generally considered to be a sign of intelligence in our society. No one likes to feel dumb and when in the presence of someone using big words some people feel inferior, less intelligent, fallacy though this may be. Doesn’t matter what the truth is, but we humans are emotional creatures and our first impressions are ofttimes what we use to make those emotional judgement calls. Now, on the topic of intelligence; smart in what? Intelligence is relative. Some people are stronger in some areas than others. I, for instance, am good with numbers and have a very good memory and problem solving skills. My little brother on the other hand has a 71 IQ, a “learning disability” and is generally considered to be slow. lol. They don’t know my little brother. He beat the game Oblivion of the Elder Scrolls series of video games then went on to find glitches in said game. eventually he figured out that there was a whole section of youtube dedicated to this and he became involved. Not only did my little brother find EVERY SINGLE glitch found by the rest of the online community, he found literally DOZENS of others that no one else had found(I found one new one and I was so proud, that little bastard, lol). So this 16 year old kid, 71 IQ, learning disability, slow, found dozens of glitches that the dedicated, combined efforts of TONS of other webizens failed to find. That is smart in my book. It’s not a smart like I have, with numbers and facts, it’s a smart that I can’t compete with and honestly am a little jealous of.What i’m trying to get at is a lot of people mistakenly get intimidated and feel somehow inferior when someone is “using big words”. This is fallacy. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses(I for instance can’t remember names and birthdates to save my life, I forget my mom’s, siblings, girlfriends, everyone’s despite my best efforts). If your strength isn’t vocabulary, don’t despair. You’re good at something else, everyone has their SOMETHING. :D

What are the best practices when dealing with leasing offices for an apartment rental during a summer internship?
What are best practices when dealing with leasing offices for an apartment rental during a summer internship? It is certainly exciting to start an internship and kick off an awesome summer, but interns, please be warned, there are a lot of subtleties in leasing you need to keep an eye out for! Personally despite my awesome awesome internship, I unfortunately need to go through some landlord mess. Similar cases also happen to many of my friends. So, I would like to summarize what I learned through three "equations":Leasing Office < Individual Landlord: there are upsides of leasing offices -- they offer better service, whether it is for repairing or giving you spare keys when locked out. But they ...

What type of behaviour immediately identifies a non-local where you live?
As a Brit, there are three particularly irredeemable faux pas which come to mind, both of which incite arguably the most drastic display of British condemnation:Angry stares…Here in Britain, if you get stared at angrily, or at the very least disapprovingly, you know you’ve messed up.However, being the overly polite and apologetic people they tend to be, there are certain misdemeanours which incite a far stronger response than others.Inability to queue: The British are often stereotyped as being peculiarly good at forming an immaculate queue, but let me tell you this right now: That is not just a stereotype. It’s a way of life goddammit. Queuing is an unspoken rule. You will hardly see anyone cut in line unless they want a serious bollocking, or they simply aren’t a local. In fact, we take queuing so seriously, that during the London Riots a few years ago, British thugs STOOD IN LINE to loot a shop:Engaging in small talk: This is a big no no. You have little idea of what lengths the typically talk-averse Brit will go to avoid small talk. It is genuinely hurtful to one's sentiments to have to engaged in small talk, and don’t even get me started about talking whilst in a queue, lest you wish to be burned at stake.LOUD ASS PHONE CONVERSATIONSIMAGINE THIS:You are sitting in a train, chugging along the tracks in some dismal field in the middle of England. It’s 5PM and everyone is returning from a visibly distressing day at work - businessmen and women, all sipping fervently at their tea, absorbed in their smartphones and MacBooks, looking up from time to time to scowl at the rain pattering abysmally against the windows in a spectacularly British fashion. You hear nothing but the clicking of keys as people sit at their laptops typing hopelessly. What a boring scene. So quiet…So lifeless…So hopeless…YOU KNOW WHAT WE NEED TO GET THIS PLACE HYPED UP, GET ALL THOSE EMOTIONS RUNNING?!?!That’s right…An Indian dude!Out of the blue, you hear the sudden clamour of bells and a crackling choir now pervades the atmosphere:“ *SITAR IN BACKROUND* HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIIIME!*Shit. Everyone turns their head to the brown guy in the corner.“Don't pick that phone up, Rakesh.”“DON’T, RAKESH.”“PLEASE ,RAKESH, DON’T DO IT - FOR ME!”“RAKESH!!!”My silent thoughts provide no resistance. The brown guy raises his hand, slowly signNowing for his pocket. In classic British style, everyone in the cabin turns around and glares as he glares back, nonchalantly. This is going to be one long ride.I take a deep breath as the brown dude takes out his phone.Just look at that glare of cold, harsh contempt… HE DOESN’T GIVE A SHIT, DOES HE??!?“NAMASTE (MEANS HELLO) ! THIS IS RAKESH KOTRAVINDALERUMARESHWARUM SPEAKING, HOW CAN I HELP?”NO NO NO!!!!For the next 80 minutes, Rakesh proceeds to have the loudest phone call known to mankind. In those 80 minutes, a plane crashes, there is a nearby meteorite strike and zombies return from the dead, but these sounds are all obscured by Rakesh and his chuntering. There is no way out.You are literally the only other brown guy, stuck in a moving metal box with 50 angry Brits staring at this Indian guy who’s been talking so long about his life story that he’s probably reciting some shitty poetry he wrote about this girl in middle school. When the train finally signNowes your stop, this is what you see:Ambulances.Ambulances everywhere.Firemen and paramedics blast onto the train rescuing people as they flee from these hellish carriages, crying and covering their bleeding ears, traumatised by this auditory catastrophe.Rakesh smiles, knowingly …

What is the harsh reality of being a male in India?
Here is a story about the harsh reality of being a male in India. My friend was in a live-in relationship with a girl.It was a mutual relationship. He met her during some job-related work and didn’t know much about her background. They soon fell in love and since they both were not serious about marriage so they decided to go for a live-in relationship. They never tried to interfere with each other’s background. After six months, they broke up and split. The reason being, the girl now wanted him to marry her and he was not ready for marriage. He told her that he does not want to marry her. They broke up and went separate ways. The boy resumed working while the girl went to her hometown. The boy left the apartment after a week or two. After two months, one odd day, my friend and I were having tea when he receives a call from his broker of the apartment where he and his live-in partner used to live. He told her that the girl has come to the apartment thinking he was still living there. But that was not the problem. She came to the apartment with two police officers. After an hour of talking, we came to know that she has registered an FIR against him for domestic violence and he was called for interrogation. This is what people around us told us. None had a clear idea of what was happening.I knew a lawyer and I called him for help. He asked me the name of the boy and I told him.The lawyer asked me to stay put for some time. We drank one more cup of tea. After some time the lawyer called and told us that it is not a simple case because the girl has not just registered an FIR in one section, She had accused him under 6 sections of IPC for Rape, domestic violence, sexual harassment, tsignNowery, Fraud and many other. It was a serious case and a non-bailable warrant has been issued against him. He will get arrested soon. The lawyer friend of mine was from a different city so we had to look for the lawyer in our own city to represent him.We had to find some way to get him out of it.We immediately went to a few lawyers. To our surprise, every lawyer declined to take our case citing this was a lost case and no one can win this.In cases like this, there is no bail and till the investigation goes on, the man has to remain in custody. There is no escape from that. His innocence doesn’t matter.More than that the sympathy of everyone is by default towards the girl, whether it is the judge or the police. It is very difficult to win a case like this.My friend and I never had to deal with anything like this.He was new in the city and he didn’t know many people. He was scared so he took flight and went home. Basically, he escaped because he was terrified. He thought in his hometown at least he could be saved as he knows few powerful people there. His father died next week of cancer and more troubles fell on him.A few weeks later, a special team of police signNowed his hometown, located him, arrested him and brought back to the city. He was presented in front of the judge and immediately was sent to jail as an undertrial. Now comes the worse. The girl escaped after registering the case.At every hearing, she wouldn’t be there and a new date of hearing had to be set.Turned out that that girl had done this before with two more guys. But nothing happened to her and the Police did nothing. They didn’t do anything here as well even after they now knew her identity and her past.My friend had to be in jail for nine months before he was released on bail. When he came to meet me, he was demotivated and depressed about his life.He wanted to commit suicide but I motivated him to start again. He went back to his hometown. His career was ruined. It took him a year to get out of the traumatic memories of jail. The girl is still free and out there conning other men while my friend has to come to the city court every month for signing bail documents. Till the case gets over, it is told to him, that he has to keep visiting court.—There are numerous similar cases in India like this where a woman has falsely accused men of doing something wrong with them and later when the otherwise is proven, nothing happens to the girl, but the man though proved innocent by the court becomes socially outcast and loses everything.—A few years back the case of AAP volunteer Jasleen Kaur falsely accused Sarvjet Singh of sexually harassing her.Without the complete trial, without proper investigation and without any judgement coming out of court, Sarvjeet was put in jail and Jasleen was awarded bravery awards everywhere. She was even given a lot of prize money for standing up like this.Later the bubble of her bravery was broken by ZEE news when the bystanders were interviewed.Did anything happen to Jasleen? No.Her father later sends her abroad to study while Sarvjeet lost his job, was social outcaste and is still trying to recuperate from the false conviction.—This is not just limited to India. This is Travis Alexander and next to him you can see his cute beautiful girlfriend, Jodi Arias.Travis was killed by Jodi in the most brutal manner possible. He was stabbed, his throat was slit and a shot in his temple and his chest when his dead body was found. After Jodi was brought to trial, for a brief time she became one of the most famous women of the US at that time. She was giving interviews to all major TV channels and telling how Travis mistreated her.She became the hero of Feminists and woman organizations and there were protests outside the court by the public to release her.Initially, she didn’t accept that she murdered him.Later when every evidence turned against her, she accepted that she had murdered him but he also added that she did it because Travis was a pervert man who was sexually harassing her and had been violent towards her.The face of the case changed. She turned the entire case about Travis’s death to the case of Domestic Violence and ripped apart his character in the court. Everyone had to take her word for it because Travis was not in the world to defend himself. Thanks to the brilliant litigation and research by the Public Prosecutor Juan Martinez that she was convicted later. But barring few last days, it was clear that she would be released free in this case. And yes, she cried many times in the court. She cried to win over the sympathy of the jury and there as a time when it appeared that she succeeded in doing so and in some time she would roam the world scott-free.—Meet Brian Banks.A well-known athlete who had tremendous potential to become a great footballer. His entire career and a bright future both were in front of him.Lots of agencies and companies were approaching him for sponsorship and to ask him to be part of their team.It was going good until one day when his entire dream career just collapsed down.He was only seventeen when his classmate Wanetta Gibson falsely accused him of raping her.He was black so he was immediately arrested. He was in jail for nearly six months and was on strict parole for five years before the girl confessed that she fabricated the entire story. The court rule was overturned. The man ruined his entire career and the most prime years of his life. He is never going to get them back. And what happened to the girl.Well, nothing. She is still living her life normally. There was no perjury case registered against her.—It is not just these cases but there are numerous cases around the globe where Woman who knows their powers under law falsely accuse men of wrongdoing without understanding the gravity of the repercussion of their actions. They use the word Sexual harassment so lightly that it amuses everyone.Recently Esha Gupta blamed a man for staring at her in a wrong manner. She accused him of sexual harassment and posted his photo on her Instagram. She is a famous actress so there is no need to elaborate that the photos went viral and the man had to go underground after a while because.. yes, he is socially outcasted now and he will have to carry this blame for his entire life. She blamed him for seeing her in the wrong manner because SHE THINKS that. There was no trial or investigation or proof and yet the man has to bear the anger of society.—I agree every woman should be protected and we must take their safety very seriously.A lot of women has been suffering from the hands of cruel mean men and those men should be brought to justice. But on the other hand, everyone under the constitution has the legal right for a fair trial and there is no technological development to figure out whether someone has committed a crime or not without proper investigation.Putting someone in jail without proper investigation for a period of 3 months in the non-bailable category is extremely wrong in my opinion, especially those who do not have a history of crime.Law should be equal to everyone. And when woman are proven wrong, they should be held in the court of law under Perjury for ruining someone’s life and wasting court’s time and taxpayers money.

If a private building has a sign that says “No Firearms”, is it illegal to conceal carry in that building?
Credentials: I am a Texas License To Carry (LTC) Instructor. The State required curriculum addresses this issue specifically, although Texas has specific rules on the matter. I am also quite familiar with general requirements of the Common Law.Your Question is complicated and the exact correct answer varies from state to state.Generally: The General Theory In this matter is that a property owner has the legal right to control the character of activity his property. Unless the control of his open -to-the-public property involves exclusion based on race, creed, color, national origin, previous condition of servitude, discrimination is allowed. A sign that says “no alcohol” is enforceable. So is “no smoking”. As is a sign that says “Shirts and shoes required for service”. A “no firearms” sign expresses the wishes of the proprietor, owner or landlord. If a person carrying a firearm does not comply, in most cases that means they have committed the tort of Civil Trespass. If they are discovered, they can be ordered to leave and potentially at some later date, sued. If they are asked to leave and refuse, their action becomes criminal trespass, and they can potentially be arrested. Some jurisdictions have imbued a private “no firearms” sign with greater power, some have not.As an example:The Oklahoma Self Defense Act, Title 21 Section 1290.22 .Paragraph C explicitly states that a property owner may prohibit the carry of firearms on their premises. To do so they must post signage “on or about” the property as notification of the prohibition.Paragraph D : the carrying of a firearm by a licensee in violation of the signage “….shall not be deemed a criminal act…”, but carrier may be refused entrance or required. to leave. If the carrier refuses to leave and a peace officer is summoned, the carrier may be issued a maximum $250 citation .Oklahoma also flatly prohibits lawful carry in a city hall or government owned building, a casino or a bar. That’s Oklahoma. Paraphrased except for the quotes. Any kind of sign is allowed. Ignoring the sign is not a crime but refusal to leave is equivalent to a speeding ticket.Texas , on the other hand, has three “notice” means. 1) oral notice “ we don’t allow concealed firearms here” from a greeter or clerk or maitre’d or someone clearly speaking for management 2) a card or printout or flyer with the required statutory wording ( described below in English and Spanish) which is handed to EVERY entrant or most commonly 3) a special sign. To prohibit legal concealed carry, Texas Penal Code 30.06 specifies that the sign have one inch high block letters, be in both English and Spanish, in contrasting colors, and have the exact statutorily specified long-winded wording . The sign must also be apparent and the law implies that it must be located at all public entrances. In order to accommodate the required text, the sign will be about 24”x 36” in size. An exactly similar sign is required to prohibit open carry under TPC 30.07. If the sign fails to comply exactly with any of the TPC 30.06 specifications, or the proprietor has cut corners by simply placing a “No Guns” sign , such a sign is not legal notice; a non-compliant sign is not legally enforceable and has no legal effect. An LTC holder can ignore it.If a Texas LTC holder carries past a statutorily compliant TPC 30.06 sign , there can be two very different legal implications and results , depending on where the action occurs. If the TPC 30.06 sign location is a private business or premises generally open to the public , the LTC holder may be refused entrance or asked to leave. They may be cited for a Class C misdemeanor -a $200 fine. If they are verbally instructed to depart and subsequently refuse to do so, the offense becomes a Class A misdemeanor, potentially punishable by a year in jail.If the TPC 30.06 sign location is a hospital, nursing home, parimutuel betting horse or dog racetrack , a place of worship or a meeting of a political or administrative body subject to the Texas Open Meetings Act- such as a city council, county commission, zoning commission, parks board, mosquito control district board, etc. ( during the course of the meeting , gavel to gavel only) , ignoring the sign is a FELONY. If the TPC 30.06 sign is NOT posted, carry by an LTC holder at the meeting is completely legal. As noted, unlike in Oklahoma, in Texas an LTC holder can carry legally in city hall and government offices even in the Texas State Capital; a City CANNOT post a legally enforceable TPC 30.06 sign, except during public meetings as noted above. It is even a criminal infraction for a city to attempt to do so. The Texas Attorney General will take any city attempting to infringe on a citizens right to carry to court; scofflaw city officials will pay heavy criminal fines.Beyond the provisions of TPC 30.06, Texas Bars are a prohibited place for LTC holders under any circumstance; any establishment that derives more than 51% of its income from sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption is a “Bar.”A bar must post a red Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission “51%” warning sign ; LTC carry in a bar is a felony. This has been a brief a comparison of Texas and Oklahoma. Next door to each other and fairly similar, but still different in numerous ways.A very brief look at gun friendly Alabama finds that Alabama prohibits lawful concealed carry in psychiatric hospitals or mental health facilities, police stations or city council meetings and the State House. On the other hand , Alabama has no laws against hospital carry, house of worship carry, bar carry, casino carry or polling place carry although there may be legally enforceable administrative rules in that regard. What am I saying? Various states have different rules and regulations . Pay attention to the laws of your state. You cannot afford to be wrong.A helpful resource is http://Handgunlaws.US , the NRA Concealed Carry site or the Attorney General of your state or as in Texas, The Texas Department of Public Safety. As for your original question and the situation you describe: in Oklahoma ignoring the sign is “not a criminal offense” but the carrier could be given the equivalent of a traffic ticket. In Texas, the simple “No Guns” sign is not in compliance with TPC 30.06 and is thus absolutely legally meaningless. This was necessarily long winded. I hope it provided some insight.

What is it that we as Indians are collectively doing the best for India?
A lot of things. Most Indians in general like the idea of living and letting live. In a country with huge income disparities, a lot of Indian humanity shines through. We do not think the world should be a sanitised place, in which we should simply get rid of poor people, stray animals, etc.Being able to look beyond problems, for greater good. People in some cultures bitch and moan for all kinds of trivial nonsense. Indians can look beyond a lot of small issues, as long as the general direction we’re going in is towards something better, even by a little.Living by the spirit, rather than the law of the land. We are happy to look over small illegalities, if it means someone gets a shot of kindness, so punishment doesn’t really hurt that person’s overall well being. We let things slide, if requested politely. Sometimes, rigidity doesn’t really help, and India is a great example of this.Readiness to equate people with God - This is an immense ability, when we are ready to put somebody up so high, that we are ready to call that person God. Yes, we may overdo this, but this is a sign that we are willing to humanise God, and also consider God not so unsignNowable that we are willing to see God in another person, easily and lovingly. Know how much this makes India a divine place? Just be great in some way, and you will have your worshippers!Dropping our pettiness for nation. As much as we are selfish shits that can act callous about all our national and public assets, the moment we realize we need to give up something or donate to the nation’s genuine need, we are damn good at making sacrifices.Living in hope. This is very, very essential for a developing nation. Rather than turn cynics, we are always ready to invest in hope. No matter how disappointed we may be later, it is very essential to rise up and light the next lamp. We are never going to give up.Caring for others. We may curse the Americans, spit at the Pakistanis, make fun of Bangladeshis, boo the Aussies when they do stupid things on the cricket ground, but when some nation needs our help and our Navy goes to help out, totally unknown people, it makes us feel real good that we are making a positive contribution to the world. If anybody visits India, we will take good care of them.Supporting good. No matter what our villainy in every small matter, including paying bribes for legally entitled work, the moment we see someone standing up for something good, that person will get our support, to the extent of trusting if not standing in the way of a bullet headed towards that person’s head.Pampering kids. As annoying as this may be, it would be very easy for kids growing up in a tough, competitive country to get ready for that competition right away. We let our kids climb all over us, even jump on unknown people and generally be able to put trust in the world around them. This gives them immense confidence, and while lacking in discipline, still makes for the ‘live and let live’ adults they become later.Projecting India brilliantly abroad. No matter how much we may curse and bitch about our issues, our politicians, our problems, most Indians will project India very well, in the midst of people from all nations, even if we may not represent India very well as ambassadors! We will go far enough to invite people to taste our food, watch our movies, share stories with us. Goes a long way in increasing soft power. The ambivalent nod - The head bobble that means anything from “I think that is fine”, to “We should bomb the shit out of our enemy”, is in reality, an acceptance, a compromise, an argument ender, a conflict resolver, a diffuser of situations, especially when done without words. If the rest of the world could learn this, we would be able to leave a lot undefined, just to avoid conflict!Respecting other people’s religions - We may take this for granted, but people of no religion ever need to fear anything from the vast majority of Indians. They can practise without any problems, and even share things with us about their religion without any chance of ridicule. Being in places where this is not possible will make us value this about India a great deal. Nobody really cares what religion we belong to, even if we may ask a thousand questions about the other person’s religion.Taking it easy - This may sound like a small deal, but somehow Indians can relax and not panic in the face of little things gone out of control. The bus is late? The train hasn’t shown up? God, another six bloody hours? Most of us can find ways to entertain ourselves, and not really act like the world is going to end.Steely courage - In fact, after terror attacks, we are known to run towards the problem area, to see if some poor soul can be helped out, not away from horror. No clue what gives Indians this internal strength, but even in natural disasters, only stories of people helping each other come out, not self preservation as the main theme. Our kids can whack leopards with sticks to save even smaller kids, and while this is not a common thing, for most part, it would take a lot to terrorize us.Trusting Modi - We elected him, we’re standing by him. As simple as that. Right now, this is the best thing we can do. He’s our captain, even to those of us who did not vote for him. Of course this is the majority, but we make a lot of noise to make him take his shots with confidence.Okay, that last part was entirely mine, just to rile up some people, but then, this is me being Indian in my own way! Hahaha!!

Which will be the next state to follow Massachusetts's gun laws?
Which laws are you talking about? The ones that honest people have to follow that are so convoluted and difficult to understand that a lawyer and police chief wrote a book just to educate police on how to interpret the laws? A book that is an 8.5x11 format, now over 400 pages, and in its 8th edition.Law Enforcement Guide to Firearms Law (Printed Edition) – $51.00Or are you referring to the routine practice of ignoring the laws? The state has had the Bartly-Fox law on the books since 1974. The law is pretty simple. If you are found in possession of a firearm without a Massachusetts issued license for that firearm, you go to jail for 1 year. This is a mandatory sentence. Since the laws was enacted, the number of people convicted under it is under 100. Not because they don’t capture criminals with guns and no license - Heck, we’ve had several cases of such arrests where criminals are facing this charge for the second or more times JUST IN 2018! No, the problem is that to ease the court case load, most of the gun charges are dropped in the plea bargains and the criminals plead guilty of lesser crimes. Don’t take my word for it, just search for posts by #MACourtFails and read the revolving door of ‘justice’ for yourself.Lets not forget that in 1998, the state passed a massive overhaul of the gun laws that was so complex, it took over a month for legal experts to figure out all the ramifications. It also included things like:Guns needed to FAIL safety drop tests before they could be sold in the state. Yes, the wording was such that you had to have unsafe guns to be legal. That one took some time to correct.Vets needed to put their parade guns in a case to carry them on public roads. Also fixed at a later time.Restrictions on licenses could be whatever the chief of police wanted it to say and those restrictions carried the weight of law. Yep, you had unelected officials pretty much writing their own laws with no official guide to what the wording actually means. For example, if your license is restricted to “Target and Hunting”, can you stop at a store on the way home from the range for a gallon of milk? Is it even legal to bring your deer to a checkpoint without first bringing your guns home? Sound crazy? People faced charges on that kind of confusion. Its become a bit better, but there are still people who face extremely harsh penalties just for having a gun in an odd circumstance. Lets not forget, these are not criminals or people even accused of anything we’d consider a crime. They are just trying to follow extremely convoluted laws. The ability of the police chief to deny a license was almost without bounds. Denying it because a person was black was frowned upon, but denying it because the person was out of work was OK. Basically you have 351 cities and towns in the state and you could potentially have 351 different criteria. Thankfully, most chiefs (and even the author of the book mentioned above strongly recommends) simply use the written laws as the criteria and don’t play politics.I could go on and on with all the issues. But the fact of the matter is that the state has nearly double the level of violent firearm crime annually today that it did back in 1998. Not only have the laws created all kinds of problems for people who have no intent in committing a crime, but the people this whole fiasco was supposed to “crack down on” are now even more active than ever. At a time where nationally the violent crime rate is dropping, Massachusetts is trending the in the opposite direction. When you read about Massachusetts having a low crime rate, what they typically fail to mention is that its been low from the beginning, not that the laws made it so.Oh, and did I mention that this law that took experts over a month to decipher was rammed through the legislature and signed in just 28 calendar days? How many of those who voted for it had any clue what they were voting for? Basically, the Democrat leadership said “Pass it” and they did.Still sound like a great thing to copy elsewhere? Well then, lets get into some other wonderful things. The Fire Marshal decrees that all ammunition must be kept in a locked container. The same Fire Marshal will write a citation when said container becomes a bomb because the pressure of the ammo igniting in a fire can’t release and blows up the container. Of course, the Fire Marshal makes no effort to explain the problem or the fact that the “locked container” should be well vented to allow ammunition to burn off safely. In other words, the state mandates something and then punishes when people do it unless those people have knowledge that transcends the norm.Come back to your vehicle after hunting. Do you lean your gun against a tree or against your truck as you remove your pack? Well, if the gun is loaded, the tree is legal, but the truck is a violation of the law.Retail stores for recreational cannabis just opened. Thing is, visiting such a store can be a violation of both federal and state gun laws. The attorney general takes it upon itself to threaten out of state companies that shipping certain products into Massachusetts is illegal when no such law exists. The AG office is simply using the unlimited resources of the state to enact a policy it can not legally enforce. Since no company can fund a legal fight, they simply comply. As a result, it is a lot harder now to order repair parts for some guns and even when you order things that are not on the AG’s list, some companies will cancel the order because “Massachusetts”.The same AG office decides to “reinterpret” certain laws that are over 30 years old. The result of which is to make hundreds of thousands of residents and former residents in violation of some very severe felonies. Even if you were to comply instantly to the new interpretation, it does not change the fact that you violated it in the past. But, rather than following through and arresting all these criminals, she makes a “Promise” to not do so. The ultimate effect? Businesses who were operating under the old rules suddenly found themselves facing severe charges. What could not be done by passing laws was done once again by threat by the AG. Anti-gun supporters LOVE this kind of illegal action. Of course, if the same treatment were to be done on something they support, there would be an outcry. Ultimately the practice will be overturned in the federal courts, but in the meantime there are millions of dollars being wasted fighting such illegal practices.Speaking of wasting millions. Lets look at the liberal wet dream in effect here. License and Registration. Massachusetts has had some form of license and firearm registration since the 1930’s. It’s changed and included more and more over the years, but it is a very long history. To manage, process, and maintain all this information (and don’t forget this is a state of less than 7 million people), the budget is roughly $6 million every year. So what do the residents of Massachusetts get for their $6m annual investment? From time to time various groups have issued Freedom of Information Act requests asking the state to provide a list of all cases where the license and registration data was used to help solve a crime. To this date, the state has not been able to show even one case where the data was useful in solving a crime. NOT ONE.Well what about preventing crimes? One of the media circus shootings was the Edgewater case. When it happened they were called “Workplace shootings”, but today would be called a “Mass shooting”. This particular one is a clear indicator of the license and registration failure. The Edgewater event occurred about 2 years after the 1998 gun laws went into effect, so there was an active push still on to slap down hard on guns. The shooter used to have a valid gun license. That license was nearly 2 years expired when the crime was committed. The state had all the information available to know that this person was potentially in felony possession of firearms without a license. In the two years between the license expiration and the crime, no effort was made to see what was going on. The state also knew all the guns used in the crime were registered to the shooter. Since all transfers (including private ones) are recorded by the state, they also knew he still had those guns. There is also evidence that the state was aware that the shooter was having mental health issues, but this is less clear due to the healthcare privacy rules. Even without any of the mental heath aspects, the state had all the information to know that the shooter had guns, had no license and was likely committing multiple felonies in regards to those guns and any ammunition he had for them. And yet, NOTHING was done. What is the use of license and registration when you can have textbook violations that are ignored? The thing is, this type of incident is extremely rare. People who have licenses are rarely arrested for violent gun related crimes. Which is why no resources are put toward dealing with what is essentially paper violations. It is simply not an effective use of police budgets. But for some reason it is justified to spend $6m annually to keep a list of all these people who almost never commit crimes and what kind of toys they own.Even the registry is suspect. In the 1990’s multiple banker boxes of registrations were destroyed due to the health threat of the mice who had made those boxes their home. How many guns in Massachusetts homes have no official registration record now? The validity of the registry is estimated by the state at about 70%. I suspect that it is far less than that. And who knows how many guns remain in homes around the state? There are houses in my town that were built in the 1600’s. Most communities still have a powder house from a time where bulk black powder was stored away from homes. A month rarely goes by when I don’t get at least one call regarding someone finding a gun in the home of an older relative. Heck, I found one when I cleaned out my grandfather’s home after his death. The thing is, none of these guns are a threat to anyone. Guns in the homes of people who are not criminals will not suddenly seduce the person to commit crimes.Up until recently, I had 2 guns in my safe that did not belong to me. A widow in town found them when going through her husband’s things. She contacted the police. Now, the police could have enforced the law and arrested the widow for felony possession of the firearms without a license, but why would anyone want to prosecute a widow in those circumstances? Instead, the chief gave me a call to not only take temporary custody of the guns (mostly so the town did not have to store them) and help the woman get licensed so that she could decide what to do with a couple of rather nice (and expensive) guns. Once her license came, I brought back her guns (all cleaned and lubed). Surely a much better solution than what the laws dictate. My point? None of the license and registration help anything. It simply wastes money on keeping track of the people most likely to NOT commit crimes. Such registries, even when in place nearly a century, are generally very inaccurate. And, regardless of the existence, guns are out there. Honest people simply find themselves in a trap. The criminals? Did you know that it is actually illegal to prosecute a criminal who failed to register a gun? Yup. Supreme Court case declared it a violation of a person’s 5th amendment rights. So, why is it that ANY state would want to follow the Massachusetts gun laws? First, they have done nothing to reduce crime. Second, they waste a ton of tax dollars that could be better spent dealing with criminals. Third, they place citizens in legal traps. Fourth, they are so convoluted that even the police have a hard time understanding them. Fifth, they allow political whims to be made de-facto law with no means to challenge other than to fight the unlimited resources of the state all the way to the federal courts. To support gun laws in Massachusetts, you must first support some of the very acts which once began a revolution in this state. Make no mistake, the American Revolution began when the Governor of Massachusetts attempted to enforce his gun control laws on the people by the seizure of private arms. Those who fail to learn from history tend to repeat it.

Almost always none.A witness to any kind of legal document is just a witness witnessing the main parties signing that document. The witness is not part of the matter of the legal document. However, there might be a liability in terms of the general criminal law for a witness to sign a legal document in the capacity of a witness when he/she has not actually witnessed the signing by the main parties. In other words, if you’ve not witnessed the signing of the legal document by the main parties, then don’t sign as a witness.
