What is the most racist thing that you have witnessed or had happened to you?
Story 1 - When the military transferred our family to York, PA, we were rudely awakened to learn that living in the DC area, and York, PA was two different lifestyle altogether. We moved in on a Saturday, started visiting churches on Sunday. We thought we start with a church near our home. When we got to church, the pastor met us at the door with a surprised look on his face. Not knowing much about York, we did not know what his look was about. We told him we just moved to York and were visiting churches. He told us, “oh mine, we are happy to have you all but I have to tell you, some of the members may not sit well with you people been here and that we should give them time, that they will get used to us”. My husband and I looked at each other and back at him. He continued, “now some of the members may not feel SAFE with you all sitting by them so don’t feel bad if they move to another seat”. Again, we just look at him. Needless to say, we left without entering the church. When we got home we noticed an older lady cleaning our front door, apparently, someone had sprayed painted the phase “NIGGERS YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE” on our front door and she was trying to remove it before we came home. My husband told her to leave it so we wouldn’t forget that we are not welcome! The crazy part of this story is that someone called the cop because our door was painted with “profanity” and that was bad for the neighborhood. The cop cited us $250.00 for our door having profanity on it! We refused to pay and went to court, told the judge what had happened and we were still cited for not cleaning it up, the cost was reduced to $100.00! Only in America!Story 2 - I was to leave some money at home for my husband but forgot so he decided to drop by my office to pick it up. We were all sitting in the lunchroom eating and talking. As soon as my husband entered the room, all the ladies tensed up and pulled their purses closer to them. The men were on guard as if my husband, dressed in military clothing, was about to robe them. When I got out of my seat and hugged and kissed my husband, they all somehow excused themselves. Apparently, black people kissing in public was something they were not used to seeing.Story 3 - My younger son is very smart, straight A+ student. Each year the high school list their 12-grade honor roll students in the newspaper. That year our son was graduating with honors. We did not see our son name in the papers so we called the school. First, they told us they did not have any space left since his last name begins with a W, but somehow a child with the last name Zimmerman made it in. We did not buy it and reported them to the same newspaper. The newspaper company said, his name was never given to them. Then the school said they did not put his name and picture because they did not think anyone would believe them. When we protested, they listed his name on the last page at the bottom so small you had to seriously look to find it. So we got even, we paid for 1/4 page ad with his picture and report card which was all A’s!Our time in York, PA stories are endless. With Donald Trump as president, it is getting worse, not better!

What's something a doctor did to you that you won’t ever forget?
This goes back a few years. I was in my last year of senior residency. It was my month of rotational emergency duty which was coming in too frequently because, you guessed it right, shortage of residents.So this evening I came in for my night shift but the doctor who I was relieving met me at the gate stating that he had induced a case in regional anaesthesia. It was a fracture humerus (upper arm long bone) at the upper end (it’s a long bone) and he had used a supraclavicular nerve block (a sort of regional anaesthesia where drug is injected in the neck, just around the nerves, to numb it) for the patient.But the patient remained awake and sedated. No pain. He told me that the patient was “fine” and the surgeons had been having a go at it for some time now. No co-morbidity. What time did he induce? I asked him. Four pm. It was now 8.00. I asked him who was operating. When he told me the name, my heart sank. Anyway there was little I could do in the hallway and I rushed to the OT.I changed and entered the OT and asked the patient how he was doing. The situation was even worse than I imagined. The patient was lateral (turned right) and the two surgeons were around him trying their hands at broken chunks of humerus.I then spoke to the surgeon who was the least favourite one of mine. He was a overconfident orthopedician and he was an anaesthetic nightmare. I asked him if it wasn’t too long a time? He told me rather rudely that he had clearly told my predecessor that it was a difficult one to fix and will be a prolonged surgery and they invariably needed two more hours. I cringed.My predecessor had left me in a terrible position.So now I had on my hands a patient who had been lateral for four hours with a bone that refused to fix, blood loss and with the effect of anaesthesia wearing off. It was no case for regional. And had to be converted.I cursed him under my breath and told the surgeon we will need to induce GA as I refuse to continue under regional any more. As expected he lost his cool because his “drapes” would be affected. But I was adamant and he agreed grudgingly cause he knew I was talking sense. Mind you, this is an emergency OT in India where top lights don’t function properly and C arm (OT xray) is broken most days. Also I was the lone senior (if you could call me that) there and it was almost 8.30 PM now.Bad place to be in? It was about to get worse. So my technician and I turn the patient around and, to my horror, I realise that it’s an obese patient who was definitely an anticipated difficult airway. (In anaesthesia there is but one nightmare. Difficult airway, which mean inability or difficulty to put an endotracheal tube to ventilate since the patient is paralysed under anaesthesia.) I saw him and I knew I would have difficulty with general anaesthesia too.I was hyperventilating now but I had to give him GA as he was now groaning in pain. I gave him a short muscle relaxant but, as expected, was unable to intubate. I was starting to panic now. I resumed the mask ventilation and tried ventilation but that failed too. So now this was a huge emergency. He was losing oxygen now.I asked for a LMA (a rescue device) meant for this case from my assistant who was also a young boy. I had told him to keep it ready if I wasn’t able to intubate. But I was unable to insert even that the first time around because of his heavy jaw. I fought the rising bile in my throat and took a second to calm my frayed nerves and reinserted another one a few seconds later. This time it worked. And all this was being done with poor access, as the patient was partly open and draped.I heaved a huge sigh as the familiar sight of lungs inflating and beep beep on the monitor rose. I clutched that LMA and silently blessed its maker, Dr Archie Brain. Sir, you saved two lives that day. That patient’s and mine. Thank you so much. The patient is now well.Needless to say, after the surgery finished I called him and gave him an earful. He never left me with an unsupervised case again.Edit - I am not blaming him. That guy was a good doctor. It was an error of judgement. He was confident his regional would work. And it did for the most part. He was overconfident. That became a problem.
