What are the best productivity tools on the web?
What does productivity mean to you? We’re all expert procrastinators whether we like to admit it or not, the digital age has created an abundance of distractions that can keep you from focusing on important things, all day long if it comes down to it. Even the subject of productivity tools comes down to a single factor — it’s all designed for mental discipline training, because even though these tools exist and they’re useful to be more disciplined at your work, they’ll only be as good as the user himself. For: All-In-One OrganizationProofHubProofHub lets you stay in ultimate control of your projects, remote teams and clients even when you are on the go. Aside from giving team member the ability to manage and collaborate projects in real-time, the other big reason for choosing ProofHub is its super simple and brings everything under one roof. ProofHub is as simple as you want it to be (clean UI, to-do lists, project planning, group chat, review deign files, project reporting), but also as advanced as they sometimes need it to be (assign custom roles, white labeling. multilingual, time tracking, private tasks, complex multi-milestone projects, large remote team, n number of tasks). For: Social Media MastermindsBufferBuffer makes it extraordinarily easy to share web articles via social media without headache and hassle. Simply log into Buffer, connect social media accounts, and schedule specific content sharing times. When you’re out and about surfing the web and see an article you know your followers will love, hit the Buffer bookmarklet button and Buffer will throw that article into your queue, which it will then share at one of your designated share times.Buffer helps promote great content across the web and helps you store and share content so you don’t cram articles down the throats of your followers all at once.IFTTTIFTTT, standing for If This Then That, lets you craft “recipes” that allow for various apps and services to connect and work together. For example, I can create an IFTTT recipe that automatically uploads my Instagram photos to my Google Drive account. Create awesome integration with zero programming experience! If you can think it, you can IFTTT it.IFTTT can be utilized in endless combinations, and not just with regards to social media. However, social media users will find this an essential tool in their social shed. For: CopywritingODesk / ELanceSometimes the best man for the job is someone who is not you. Heck, probably pretty often the best man for the job isn’t you. Maybe because you aren’t even a man; maybe you’re a carrot. Who knows? If you need to get going with blogging content (and trust me, you do, because everyone does), then ODesk and ELance are decent places to start. These sites are free to sign up with, then you provide them with 10% of each payment per project. Alternatively, scour LinkedIn for freelancers. Usually you can get a decent assessment of a freelancer’s skill level by checking out their profile and doing a little digging. Whichever path you take, just remember that copy can’t be done single-handedly, so don’t be afraid to hire out some help.HemingwayBack when I was compiling a list of the best content marketing tools, one WordStream commenter (thanks Nicole!) made a suggestion of trying out Hemingway – it’s a great little tool that checks your grammar and highlights potential sentence danger zones as you write. Give it a type! For: News & Blog JunkiesPodkickerIf you’re a podcast addict, you’ll want a podcast app to help you organize your subscriptions. I’ve been using Podkicker for years and really enjoy its simple, easy-to-use interface. It’s free, but you can also update to Podkicker Pro (to get rid of ads) for $2.PocketPocket is a sweet little app that lets you save awesome content (articles, images, videos, etc.) to check out later.Picture this: you’re surfing around researching and see a fun article about the all-time best Pokemon (Arcanine, duh). Hit the Pocket button in your bookmark toolbar and the article will go straight to your Pocket. Pocket syncs across devices so you that later on you can read those fun articles and watch YouTube videos of mini pot-bellied pigs during the train ride home.

What are the best productivity tools?
My TOP list is as follows:1. Communication tool - SlackOur team has been successfully using Skype for quite a while, and this is a way out for some teams, both small and bigger ones, but Slack is more convenient to use for IT teams, for marketers, sales people, and other industry-specific teams.2. Time tracking tool - ClockifyI like Clockify – it’s very simple, you create a task, you start tracking your time, you stop when you’re done, AND you can also check how much time you spent weekly on each working task.3. To do list – Trello boardsThe next tool I LOVE is Trello. This is a perfect one for outlining your day to day tasks, your future tasks, mapping out your ideas, sharing them with your team members, and so on.4. G Suite. No comments - couldn’t do without it.5. CalendlyIF you have a large number of meetings daily.6. Project management toolThroughout my years in IT I have met and used different PM tools, like Jira, YouTrack, Asana, and TeamGantt. And I must say that each one is good for its own purpose – so you simply choose the one that work best for you.7. Reporting tool - ExcelI have not used any specific reporting tool: I use Excel tables, both on Google drive and offline Excel files.8. CanvaNo comments :) Saves a fortune on a designer for those SMW owners whose budget is limited.See the full version of my tips here:8 BEST Tools for Remote Professionals

What do you think of people who use "big words" in everyday conversation?
Contrary to a lot of answers here, I don't immediately condemn it.Some people use unusual, advanced, or complex vocabulary because that's what they are familiar with. Often, they don't even realise that their own vocabulary might be harder to understand for some people. I refer to this as ‘the slang of the posh’, they’re words that aren't in everyday usage by most people simply because we have different (more colloquial, plain, or ‘working class’) terms to describe the same phenomena. Examples could be a more posh person using the term ‘drawing room’ where I would plump for the term ‘living room’. This is perfectly understandable, different people are familiar with different terms, and so long as I am not judged for the words I choose to use I wouldn't dream of judging another for the terms they feel more comfortable with. Some people may also use ‘big words’ because it's technical jargon. Usually, we create specific words for things we don't want to keep describing. In physics, I would use ‘quasar’ or ‘supermassive’ to mean a thing that would otherwise require description, despite the fact other people might be unfamiliar with what I'm referring to. It applies everywhere. In terms of archery, I could refer to a ‘riser’, or ‘clicker’ and someone who isn't familiar with archery would have to ask what I'm talking about. Jargon can get extremely complicated, usually moreso the more a person is involved in a particular thing. Now an important thing to note about jargon is often after a while you forget it is such; you subconsciously expect others to know what you mean, because to you it actually is an everyday term. If you encounter someone using jargon you don't understand, usually the solution is to point out you are not an expert in the topic of discussion and they need to explain the terms they are using, or elect for more common ones. However, some people use big words for a single reason: they think it makes them better than you, smarter than you, or more sophisticated than you. These people are easy to spot: they will use such vocabulary where other terms would actually be more appropriate (no, it wasn't serendipitous that the bus was on time, you mean it was fortunate) or they will slip up and use a term that is flat out not meant to be there. A key part of using advanced vocabulary just because that's what you use is, in fact, using it correctly. And when I do pick up that someone is attempting to use unusual, posh, or simply confusing language in an attempt to place themselves above me, I'll usually play them. A fun one is to repeatedly use words that sound posh but don't exist, and watch them either go along with it thinking you know words they don't, or realise what you're doing and struggle to decide if they can call you out on it.

Does sign language bear any necessary relation to the dominant spoken language?
Theoretically no. But in some cases yes.First, why “theoretically no”.In my experience there are two major differences between sign languages and spoken languages:Sign languages are the ultimate analytic languages. There is a distinction in linguistics between synthetic and analytic languages. In synthetic languages you take a word and change some letters or add suffixes or prefixes to change its meaning. In analytic languages the words are always the same and to change their meaning you have to add more words.English is already on the analytic end of the spectrum. But even in English you have some synthetic features, such as “I/me” and “go/went”.One of the consequences of being an analytic language is you can rely heavily on word order to get the right meaning, much more than a synthetic language. When translating between languages at opposite ends of the spectrum you can end up completely reordering the sequence of thoughts. Now in sign language you don't change the shape of a hand sign to indicate past tense or accusative case or anything like that. In other words, it's ultra-analytic. The sign is the sign. So already that's a big structural difference to most spoken languages.Sign languages have phenomenal potential for concrete expression. In spoken languages we have what is called onomatopoeia: Sometimes we imitate the sound instead of using the actual word. So for example “The bomb exploded” is your average sentence whereas “The bomb went BOOOM!” uses onomatopoeia. We could say the first sentence is an abstract form of expression, using words as symbols, whereas the second is concrete, instead using noises that actually sound like the thing being described.Spoken languages have limited scope for such concrete communication because they are sound-based. Unless I'm describing an event that you can hear, I have no choice but to use abstract words.Sign languages, on the other hand, are visual. The signer has at his disposal his eyes, facial muscles, arms, hands, and the three-dimensional space around his body to paint whatever picture he wants. It's almost theatrical. This is why if you look at a transcript of something in sign language, you could be forgiven for thinking that sign language is a primitive, me-Tarzan-you-Jane kind of language. But a transcript would only record the individual hand signs used, the abstract dimension. What you'd be missing is the concrete dimension, all the rich visual color and nuance that actually conveys most of the meaning.Sometimes hearing people will see this as a bad thing. They will try to force the sign language to be every bit as abstract as the spoken language. But left to their own devices, native speakers of sign languages use its theatrical quality to great effect. It's not a bug, it's a feature :)Now to the why “in some cases yes”.Unfortunately sign language is often at the mercy of the government. There were times when the expert opinion was that sign language should be discouraged and the deaf should be taught to lip read only. In some countries this opinion was state policy for many decades.Turkey was one of those countries. For Turkish Sign, this situation had several effects:The regional dialects of sign language were pushed apart even moreThe lexicon of abstract signs was stuntedThe deaf that did get an education were taught to lip read, resulting in fixed associations between signs and spoken wordsThe result is that for Turkish Sign Language, there are some signs with two or three possible meanings, and the only way to tell them apart is to mouth the intended spoken word over the top. This has become an integral part of the sign language. For example, the sign for both “father” and “man” is the right thumb touching the chin. The only way to tell which is which is to watch the lips. In Turkish, father is “baba” and man is “adam”. So if I touch my chin with my thumb and mouth “BABABA…” I mean father, and if I mouth “aDAMMM” I mean man.So in the case of Turkish Sign, yes there is a connection with the spoken language, but it's a historical artifact. It didn't have to be this way.

What are some of the best Coursera courses? Why?
I wanted to learn machine learning. So I spent a week scanning the internet for the best learning resources.Coursera kept popping up. I had never seen it before. But it was familiar. A girl I served at the Apple Store once was telling me how she was watching videos on her phone whilst on the train. She showed me the app. It was blue.'What for?' I asked.'No reason, I just think it's always good to be learning something.'You know how those moments someone says one thing. One thing and it sticks with you forever. She left the store. When I found Coursera I remembered her. Her words stuck.I had some free time since I quit Apple and the startup we were working on failed.I collected a few courses together and created my own AI Masters Degree.[1] Whilst building the website for our startup, all I'd heard about was machine learning and deep learning. Disruption here, innovation there. All thanks to computers learning things on their own. On their own? How? I had to know.A) Andrew Ng's Machine Learning Course[2]This came first. It was tough. Really tough. I had to Google the answers a few times. Otherwise, I would've burned out.I remember hardly anything from it. None of the code because it was in MatLab and Octave. I wasn't a fan of the MatLab interface. Plus, I was learning Python on the side. But what I did take away was Andrew's passion for teaching. His energy for machine learning. His enthusiasm for artificial intelligence. It put a smile on my face and wore off on me.Sometimes a teacher sparking an interest in a student is more important than the knowledge itself. If you want to get into machine learning, this course teaches some of the fundamentals. I wouldn't worry too much if you can't pass the coding assignments, I'd watch the lectures, get an intuition and use it to fuel your next learning step. A course with Python.B) Applied Data Science with Python by the University of Michigan[3]When I started as a machine learning engineer, my skills for exploring a dataset were subpar. I'd spent too much time building deep learning networks for prepared datasets rather than getting into the trenches and exploring data from scratch. This course helped me learn the fundamental steps of exploratory data analysis (EDA).If you want to get into data science and machine learning, you'll probably find yourself spending a lot of time using the Python library Pandas doing EDA. And this is exactly what part 1 of the course is about. After I finished, I used the skills to enter my first Kaggle competition.[4]Out of all the courses I've done, Applied Data Science with Python has been the most aligned with what I do day-to-day as a machine learning engineer. In hindsight, this course should've been one of the first I took when starting to learn machine learning/data science.C) deeplearning.ai with Andrew Ng[5]Check out how stoked I was for this one.[6]Anything Andrew Ng releases, I engulf. My learning style is very aligned with his teaching style.I learn best with a combination of text and visuals. Andrew does both of these in his lectures. Often drawing examples over the printed lecture notes. This course taught me the fundamentals of deep learning as well as how to apply them. If the Applied Data Science with Python is the Everest Base Camp of data science, deeplearning.ai is the peak.It gives an overview and working examples of the concepts involved in computer vision (teaching computers to see), natural language processing (teaching computers to understand language) and spoken language detection (teaching computers to hear). In between each of these topics, Andrew shares his wealth of experience and dives deep into some of the math and statistics behind deep learning.D) Learning How to Learn by Barbara Oakley[7]This course should be compulsory for all students. I've left it until last but if I was to start again, I'd do this first. It's worth doing yearly to update yourself. Why?Because learning how to learn is the ultimate skill. If you know the techniques and best practices for learning itself, you can apply them to anything else. Some of my favourites (and ones I use daily) were:Pomodoro timers to avoid procrastination — set a timer for 25-minutes and do nothing except the single task in front of you until the timer is up.Focused and diffused thinking — focused thinking happens when you’re focusing on a single task, diffused thinking happens when you aren't doing anything in particular. The best learning happens at the crossover at these two. It's why it's valuable to have breaks and periods of time where you do nothing at all. It's why some of your greatest ideas come to you in the shower. No need for genius envy — everyone has to start a learning journey somewhere. And the thing is, learning never stops, it's always day one. Charles Darwin was a college dropout who later went on to discover the theory of evolution.Knowing these things in high school probably would've helped my grades a little. And maybe prevented me from failing my first two years at university.I loved this course so much I made a video about it summarising the rest of my favourite takeaways.[8]The rest of the courses here have been biased by my interest in machine learning and data science. But I think you'll gain something from the Learning How to Learn course no matter what you're into.E) Bioinformatics by the University of California San Diego[9]I haven't done this one yet but I'm going to start it tomorrow. Why?Because nothing fascinates me more than the crossover of health and technology. That's bioinformatics in a nutshell. It's amazing to have such resources available online.I can be sitting in my room in Brisbane, Australia and learning exactly what I what I want to be learning. Something originally taught over 5000-miles away. And if you want to learn something new, you can. All you have to do is sign up and then keep showing up.You don't need a reason either.'No reason, I just think it's always good to be learning something.'Keep learning.Footnotes[1] My Self-Created Artificial Intelligence Masters Degree[2] Machine Learning | Coursera[3] Applied Data Science with Python | Coursera[4] Code with me (live): How to make your first Kaggle submission from scratch![5] Home - deeplearning.ai[6] Graduating from the deeplearning.ai Coursera Specialization | Learning Intelligence 22[7] Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects | Coursera[8] The Ultimate Skill: Learning How to Learn (course review)[9] Bioinformatics | Coursera

What does "DRM free" mean?
DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. DRM solutions limit the people who purchase and download your digital products from interacting with them in certain ways, for example, sharing, printing, or copying them. DRM protection is there to prevent consumers from illegally redistributing purchased files. “DRM free” then, is a file without limits. The majority of the PDF, spreadsheet, and text files you create in your word processor are “DRM free.” The photos you upload to your computer from your camera are “DRM free.” Users can duplicate, copy, save, cut, paste, edit, and share them as much they like. Any file you download from the web that is promoted as “DRM free” would simply mean that you will have unlimited access to interact with it — to view, adapt, copy, and exchange it.
