When you purchase a new Windows computer with a factory image what are the first steps that you take to prepare the new computer
This is the simplest answer ever: wipe everything and do a clean install.I've been doing that since the days of Windows XP.Here is my usual algorithm:Download manufacturer drivers for Windows 10. If there aren't any, download a few basic drivers (at least chipset and SATA) for Windows 8 or even Windows 7. I do this because many times Windows 10 is missing manufacturer drivers for system components and/or SATA interface, and uses generic ones, which can create issues. So I prefer windows 7 or 8 drivers to generic ones.Create Windows 10 install media and copy the folder with downloaded drivers on it. Extract drivers from install kit (many drivers come in a zip file).Install Windows 10 as usual. At the partition selection stage, I usually wipe the entire drive (using cmd and diskpart) and tell Windows to install in the free space.Once the install is done, I cut some space from the Windows partition and create a second partition (usually giving it most of the space) and move there all user folders (the ones stored in C:\Users\
). This way I separate user files from system files. So when I create a system image, I don’t include user files in it.I install the drivers. If they are specifically for Windows 10, just run the installers. If I didn’t find Windows 10 drivers, I run the installer only for the chipset drivers. For all the others I open device manager and update drives from there (with right-click on the device, update drivers). I do this because I want to avoid issues that the driver installers can create (if they are not specifically for Windows 10).When done with the drivers, I run Windows update and make sure that all updates are installed.I install then all the apps I usually use and, as a final step, I create a system drive image using AOMEI backupper.
