What do people in Kazakhstan think about the transition from Cyrillic to Latin script?
It is going to be a long read. But my goodness, Oscar Tay, my Quora hero, is following that question and upvoting each answer!I’ll try my best here.Ok, straight to the question:What do people in Kazakhstan think about the transition from Cyrillic to Latin script? Most people are indifferent. Kazakhstan is an authoritarian country. If the policy does not affect them personally, people will not give a lot of thought to it. Sadly or not, the new alphabet is not a top priority for most in Kazakhstan. Some people oppose it. Because transition is expensive. They believe that the money and attention shall be directed to more vital needs like health care or infrastructure. And given the corruption level in the country, most believe that this reform is made to make some “connected” people richer. Some support it. Their logic is simple if you are going to eventually do this reform one day. Better do it now. Otherwise, the costs of converting documents from Cyrillic to Latin will only accumulate. The later you do it, costlier it will be.Majority of supporters use nationalistic tone. Somehow, they believe that Latin script will make us closer to other Turkic nations and the West, and less close to Russia.Other opposers worry about the learning curve. Some older people may never learn it. They also concerned that the teachers who are not going to be proficient with the new script are going to be one who will teach it to the kids. How many people will have impaired proficiency with new script before reform starts to work properly? No doubt, it’s going to be bumpy all the way down. But is it worth it?My opinion:I support transition to standard Latin script. Why? Because Apple does not have built-in Kazakh keyboard in its products. There is only one app in Apple Store for external Kazakh keyboard. And when last time I used it, it was UGLY and SLOW.Sometimes lack of fancy fonts even for Russian language script depresses me. But Kazakh script fonts selection is nonexistent. Here is the problem. Kazakh script is based on Russian Cyrillic script. But because Kazakh language has sounds that Russian does not, Kazakh Cyrillic script has 9 letters in addition to 33 letters of Russian alphabet. It is basically a different alphabet, which needs to be installed to any gadget. And because there is low demand for Kazakh script, no one updates it. As a result, in this fast-changing technology world, we got rubbish support for Kazakh alphabet. Now imagine an ideal world. Kazakh language uses the standard 26 letter English alphabet. You can write in Kazakh in any gadget in the world. Don’t need to seek and install additional app or driver anymore. You have the hugest selection of font types so your presentation or design booklet could rock.Turns out…there is no ideal world. And, there is no ideal way to transit to Latin script.Implementation:In September 2017 without any prior public discussion, the new Kazakh alphabet based on Latin script was introduced to the public. For several months the debate over the new alphabet was the most discussed topic on my Facebook feed.As it turned out, the President had the same ideal vision as me. It was his order to use the standard English alphabet. The only exception, they dropped letter X in a new alphabet, because there was no use for it. But it is ok, you use the same standard keyboard, just don’t use one letter.Great, isn’t it?Well, it is not that simple…The problem is: before you had 42 letters, and now only 25. English Latin script just does not have enough letters to accommodate every sound of Kazakh language with an individual letter. The proposed solution was to use digraphs. Before I continue, you have to understand something about authoritarian countries. As people don’t oppose the rulers directly, to show its opposition people use sarcasm and mockery. They mock everything the government does. And since the implementation of new alphabet was not ideal, it was mocked in a hard way.The problem number one:The way some “useless” letters were used for sounds that are not present in Latin script. For example, letter W was used for the vowel sound you hear in English word “moon”. But it was counter-intuitive to use a “consonant” letter W for a vowel. To understand what I mean try to read moon written as MWN.Another case, letter J was used for the sound you hear in word iPhone [ˈaɪˌfoʊn], that [i] sound that goes after [a] and before [foʊn].The combination of sounds [ai] in iPhone, means moon in Kazakh. And this sound is the most popular “block” for names in Kazakhstan. Names like MoonBeauty, MoonBe, MoonFlower, and many other countless combinations of “Moons” are so common that we have a popular joke about the iPhone and the girls whose name starts with the sound [ai]. And now, all those people found out that they need to use consonant letter J in their name from now on. It was at least, to put it mildly, counter-intuitive and not elegant. It is like to say “IPHONE” but to write it “JPHONE”. Or to say “HI” but to write it “HJ”. Or instead of Michael - you now will spell your name as Mjchael. The second problem:Before we used one letter for one sound. Now we changed it to two letters for some sounds. It can be hard to adjust to it, especially if the vowel sound is a combination of two other vowel letters. It is always easier to use Ә than the combination of letters A and E.My daughter name Leila in a new alphabet became Laejlae:Saebiz (carrot)- became the most mocking word in Kazakh written in Latin Script. One Restaurant in Almaty was even named Saebiz:Finally:Kazakh is agglutinative language. Some words with the digraphs can be very messy. My name in Kazakh Cyrillic script is: Шыңғыс - in Latin will be Shyngghys, already 3 letters or 50% more. Now add to my name possesive ’s (English equivalent of - Michael’s), make it plural (many Michaels) and add preposition to (to Michael) and we got Shyngghystynglargha. Ok, you lost me, somewhere between “ngghyst”.Just for fun, look at this Kazakh word in Latin script: Qanaghattandyrylmaghandyqtaryngyzdan. What are the solutions that people suggested:Instead of digraphs use one letter for different sounds. For example letter, A can be read in one instance as a hard A and in other times as a soft A. The same approach can be used for G,O, N, U. But how do you know when to use what? The short answer is context.Vowel Harmony, another feature of Kazakh language, can also help. In Kazakh hard sounds always go together, the same is true for soft sounds. If you know that the first sound is hard K, then you know that all other letters shall be hard as well.Another solution could be to use the Turkish alphabet, instead of the standard 26 letter English alphabet. It will help with letters like hard G and soft G, or S and SH. And as Turkey is a much larger country than Kazakhstan, you may not worry about its keyboard support. On the other hand, Turkish alphabet still doesn’t have the letters for all Kazakh sounds. For example there is no soft A.The same is true for Finnish, German, French or any other Latin script.Second proposal:In October 2017, after one month of the initial proposal, the Government introduced the second variant for Kazakh Latin script:New alphabet dismissed digraphs. Instead, it used apostrophe ’ sign to differentiate between the similar sounds. K is for soft K, while K’ is for hard K. S is for S, while S’ is for SH.Seems great solution at first sight. Easy to understand, and you can still use the standard English script that is available in any computer. But it turned out to be even less practical than the first proposal. Too many apostrophes can be hard to perceive:The city Shu, in alphabet became S’Y’:But the largest obstacle for apostrophe usage was technological. Computers do not consider apostrophe as a letter. You cannot use it in google search, for web pages URL or for hashtags. Even if I wanted to create my personal web-page with the domain myname dot kz:http://S’yn’g’ys.kz(yeah that’s my name in apostrophe variant of Latin script), I wouldn’t be able to do it.Finally, in February 2018, without any further discussion, the third and last version of Kazakh Latin alphabet was introduced and adopted:Latin script tailored for the Kazakh language. One letter - one sound. No digraphs (except of Sh and Ch) or apostrophes anymore. Great, yes?Again my opinion:I have to admit the latest adopted alphabet is more convenient than the first two proposed. But it killed the reason why I supported it in the first place. At the end of the day, we are back to where we were before, the alphabet that is used only in Kazakhstan. That means no cool fonts, no updates by Apple and you have to install Kazakh keyboard every time you buy a new gadget. And there is no guarantee that Kazakh keyboard will exist for that particular gadget.Given all the troubles of adjusting to the new alphabet and no obvious benefits from it, I find hard to understand if we need it at all.My final thoughts:The real problem I have with the adoption of Latin Script, is that we as a country has failed to use any scientific approach in the process. We could, for example, run statistical analysis on how people already using Latin script in messengers. Because they do. As I said before Apple doesn’t have built-in keyboard in iPhones, and people usually write to each other in Kazakh using Latin script. We could find out a ton of interesting data on how people write and perceive in Kazakh using Latin script based on available info.I am not a scientist nor a linguist, but I am sure there are tons of analysis we could do that could have been helpful in developing a new alphabet. It’s sad we didn’t. But as they say in Kazakhstan, “everything will be Saebiz”.

What is that one thing that has completely changed your views about a person or community?
I'm an Indian Muslim working in an IT company. Ours is a nuclear family.Since my childhood, I was bought up in very decent localities and I never interacted much with the guys from the Muslim community so I had a tough time understanding them.I would like to narrate some experiences which I had in my life.Incident #1:After I started working, I was planning to buy a car. But since I was a novice driver I was looking to buy a pre-owned car.So I started looking for pre-owned cars and ended up buying an Alto - 800. The Owner of this car was a Muslim guy, and he was very religious and used to remember god in each and every sentence. And he would act like he is a messiah of God. I trusted him thinking he is a nice and decent guy who psignNowes in mosques and there is no chance that he would betray anyone (atleast me being of his community). I bought the car without taking any reviews from any local mechanic.I started using the car and once I took my car to the local mechanic to get something fixed. And to my surprise the mechanic told me that this car has some serious issues and the car had met with some serious accident and has been built from scratch by local mechanics. I was speechless and shocked. On that day I thought it was my mistake and I should have shown the car to some local mechanic and must have taken his advice.Incident #2:I am an introvert and I was very studious in school and college, so I didn't get any time to fall in love or make some girlfriends. So I had no clue about girls. My parents started looking for a bride for me. And after searching for nearly 3 years, we zeroed on a girl who belonged to a poor family. The objective was like girls from poor families wouldn't have any habits like wearing skin tight clothes, shorts, etc., and they will be homely kind. (My mother's perspective)I didn't have time for all this so I had left it to my parents to decide. My engagement was done on one fine day. On the engagement day, I felt like something was not correct. I didn't see the girl happy during the reception. So I asked my cousin sister's and my mother to check with the girl. But they denied that I am over reacting and told me that the girl is tense as her engagement is done and she has to leave her parent's house. But after going home I asked my parents that let me talk to the girl and confirm if is she happy with the our relationship. Then I talked to her and she said she is happy. I even gave her some time to think and let me know. Then she started chatting with me and soon became close to me. Initially she was hesitant to talk or chat but later she opened up.She used to stay online late and when I asked her what she is doing, she used to deny that She was not online and tell me cock and bull stories which I used to believe. Then finally the day arrived when I overheard her talking to someone behind my back and when I questioned her with whom she was talking, she said he is her brother and they are very close to each other and they were just kidding. Again I trusted her. Finally, our wedding was done and she was my wife now. She started showing me some new colors from the very next day after the marriage. Then I started keeping an eye on her activities and found out that she used to talk to him every day and night after I went work. But I didn’t react or let her know that I am watching her. That guy used to come to our house and used to talk like a messenger of god, praising god and narrating stories of Allah. I assumed that he is also a very nice guy since he helped us a lot in wedding arrangements. After one week of our marriage, I came to know that I married a Wh**e. And this guy is a F***ing pimp. These two had planned to make some good money from us by blackmailing me and my family. But somehow I got a few pictures and videos of them and exposed them in front of everyone. And now I have totally lost trust in MUSLIMS and would never trust them again.I am an ATHEIST now and I don't wish to work or interact with Muslims.I hate them to the core.Even though many Muslim youths who have no clue of what they are doing by just following blindly some a** h**es psignNowing and doing foolish things in the name of religion. We are lucky to have other communities in India who are so much tolerant and helping each other.Signing off-A Proud Indian!Note: Please note that all views expressed here are my personal opinions and I am not generalizing anything here. Period.

Once again the OTP will be sent to confirm your mobile number to complete the verification process. That’s it; you can now start using the DigiLocker service to store all your documents safely and securely.DigiLocker: App interface and workingThe app interface is plain boring and simple. On the top left corner, you have the hamburger menu to access options such as upload documents, look for issued documents, profile, Scan QR code and logout. The top right corner has quick buttons for uploading documents, creating a folder and to refresh account / sort folders. The center of the interface shows all your folders and uploaded files. However, I’d like to highlight the fact that the app is in beta phase and filled with bugs. It took me three attempts to create two folders, with each time the app throwing an error – unable to create folder. Also, once the folder was created, it wasn’t showing up on the home screen, until I logged out of the app and signed in again. However, considering that the app is in beta, issues are bound to be there, and we can only expect to get them fixed over the coming updates. The coming version of the app is likely to gain support to let you link your existing driving license, vehicle registration. The hamburger menu has an option called ‘Issued Documents,’ which does not function yet, but when the feature arrives, you will be able to fetch details and virtual copy by entering the driving license number and vehicle registration number.Final wordsThe DigiLocker app is a part of India’s Digital India push, which could soon do away with the need of carrying the physical documents all the time. In the longer run, it can also help the government agencies and other departments to avoid paper wastage and time required for attesting documents. With growing number of people using smartphones in India, it remains to be seen if DigiLocker can get a wider acceptance.

How do I start a blog in 2018?
1) Choose a topicFirst and foremost, we need an idea for starting the blog. For you, what are passionate about? Is it helping others? Winter sports? Do you love DIY projects? What about planting flowers? There are many different avenues you can take here.2) Choose a domain name (website name)After you have picked a topic, now is the fun part: coming up with a website name. This name should be simple and memorable (3-5 words). For this website, the domain name is quora.com.3) Get web hostingA web host is the server your website runs on. It is like the complete house to your living space. For web hosting, I use Bluehost, a web hosting service that has been reliable, stable, and high performing. In addition, Bluehost gives you your domain name for free. Once you click the link above you will landon the following page:Next, click the green “get started now >” button. At this point, you will have to make a choice. For now, you want to keep it simple and I recommend doing the basic $3.95 a month plan; this is a negotiated rate I got through being an affiliate of BlueHost. After selecting your plan, you check your domain name availability. Hopefully you get your first choice!Once you find a domain that is available, the next button will take you to the final sign up page. The final set-up page is where you will enter your personal details and select the package information settings. I recommend getting the “Domain Privacy Protection” for $0.99 a month. If you are trying to stay anonymous, this will hide your name and phone number from others. For the other settings, I didn’t select any. The only one I considered selecting, in addition to the “Domain Privacy Protection” setting, was the Site Backup Pro. I’m going to back-up my site manually, and save some cash. You will notice you have to pay the $3.95 a month upfront. This is a long-term project, right? If you ever monetize your blog, you have the potential to blow this number out of the water. Starting something that has the potential to make money for less than $150 should not be scoffed at. (Real estate investors need to cough up multiple thousands of dollars to buy 1 rental property!)For less than $150, you have received a domain name (usually at least $10), and have 3 years of web hosting to do whatever you want on that domain website! An additional note: if you don’t intend to monetize your blog, why wouldn’t you want to go for a free blog website, such as wordpress or blogger? Well, it is possible to still have a free blog, however, to have complete control over your website, and have support if something went wrong, I still recommend a paying for web hosting.4) Install WordPressAfter finishing up at BlueHost, it is time to get WordPress. To continue with our analogy, BlueHost is the house, your domain is the space inside the house, and WordPress is the materials that have built the house. You can pick different materials, wood floors vs. carpet, and you can pick different blogging software. WordPress is a blogging software application that makes managing and customizing your blog very easy.Installing WordPress is easy. First, log in to your BlueHost account and locate the “Install WordPress” button in the “website” section of the BlueHost “cpanel”.Next, you will be taken to the BlueHost Marketplace/Mojo Marketplace. Click the “get started” button to continue on. At the next page, select your domain and hit next. After hitting the next button, you will get your username and password for your WordPress site. Hit install to complete the install.Note: I did have some issues here when I tried to install. This post should help you.How easy was that? You have now installed WordPress. There will be a few pop-ups trying to get you to buy themes for your website (more on that in step 5). You can ignore those for now.During this time, you will get your credentials for WordPress. MAKE SURE TO SAVE THESE IN A SAFE SPOT! You need these to log in!Pat your self on the back! You installed WordPress and can now sign in to begin designing your website!5) Design WebsiteThere is a couple of things that are important to mention at this stage.1) Theme (Free or Premium)When you first start-up WordPress, you will probably have the generic “Twenty Seventeen” theme activated. This theme is fine for starters, but this one is as default as they come and may not have the customization you want. There are many free themes you can get. The positives for these themes are they are free, they will have more customization than the default WordPress themes, and they will get the job done most of the time. The negatives are there may be little to no support if there is a bug, and the theme may get abandoned and be outdated. For starters, it might be wise to stick with a free theme. To install a theme, go to the Appearance tab on the left sidebar of the WordPress dashboard, and select themes. You will be led to this page:2) PluginsPlugins are extensions to a base WordPress theme. These extensions help you do many specialized tasks. Some plugins that I suggest are:Google Analytics by Yoast Necessary to quantify your viewershipMail Chimp A great list creator, it is free up to 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails!Askimet A spam blocker – no one likes spam!Pretty Link Lite A plugin to convert ugly links into pretty linksW3 Total Cache A plugin designed to improve user experience and page speedWP Smush Reduces the size of your media files and improves speed3) Site Layout and DesignOnce you have your theme and plugins, you can start to customize the layout of your website. Go to the “Appearance” tab on the left sidebar and click “Customize”.Here you will be able to customize many different aspects of your website, from fonts to widget placement to backgrounds to menus to headers and footers. Many different combinations you can choose from.Find the one that is best for you! (This interface is sometimes frustrating, but Googling what you want to do and learning a little HTML/CSS helps this process go smoother.)6) Write your first post (and then your second and third…)After completing the first 5 steps, you have your ideas, you have your website, you have your design, now it’s time to produce some content for your readers. Here’s the punchline: you can do whatever you want!Maybe you want to do an introduction page, or an about me page. It’s possible you want to get right into writing about your passions and will leave the intro page for later. Maybe you want to start promoting a product, such as an e-book, right away. Go for it, the possibilities are endless!7) …Profit??Once you have written a handful of posts (say 25-50 posts), you will be getting a decent following on your blog (upwards of 1000 views a day). If you decide to monetize your blog, there are numerous ways to do so.Some of the ways include, but are not limited to:Consulting OpportunitiesSelling your own product, such as an e-book, pictures, podcasts, educational coursesWhen someone clicks on an ad (ads such as Google Adsense)Selling someone else’s product, i.e. an affiliate program (such as Amazon)When someone views your banner adWhen someone sees your talks/podcasts and hires you for a speaking gigYou have the potential to make a decent living in blogging if done right. Many people have been able to quit their day job and pursue financial freedom due to the passive and active income created by blogging.

As first time entrepreneurs, what part of the process are people often completely blind to?
The 100 Rules for Being a First-Time EntrepreneurIf you Google “entrepreneur” you get a lot of mindless cliches like “Think Big!” For me, being an “entrepreneur” doesn’t mean starting the next “Faceook”. Or even starting any business at all.It means finding the challenges you have in your life, and determining creative ways to overcome those challenges. However, in this post I focus mostly on the issues that come up when you first start your company. These rules also apply if you are taking an entrepreneurial stance within a much larger company (which all employees should do).Just as good to be an “entreployee” as an “entrepreneur”. Either one will help you survive this world of increased economic uncertainty. For me, I’ve started several businesses.Maybe 17 have failed out of 20. I fail quickly. I fail frequently. Entrepreneurship is a sentence of failures punctuated by brief success.I’m invested in about 28 private companies. I’ve advised probably another 50 private companies. I’m on the board of several private companies and one public company. The companies ranging from $0 in revenues to a billion in revenues.Along the way I’ve compiled a list of rules that have helped me deal with every aspect of being an entrepreneur in business and some in life. Here’s the real rules:A) It’s not fun. I’m not going to explain why it’s not fun. These are rules. Not theories. I don’t need to prove them. But there’s a strong chance you can hate yourself throughout the process of being an entrepreneur. Keep sharp objects and pills away during your worst moments. And you will have them. If you are an entrepreneur and agree with me, please note this in the comments below.B) Try not to hire people. You’ll have to hire people to expand your business. But it’s a good discipline to really question if you need each and every hire.C) Get a customer. This seems obvious. But it’s not. Get a customer before you start your business, if you can.So many people say to me, “I have an idea. Can you introduce me to VCs?”There is a HUGE gap between “idea” and “professional venture capital”.In the middle of that gap is “customer”.D) If you are offering a service, call it a product.Oracle did it. They claimed they had a database. But if you “bought” their database they would send in a team of consultants to help you “install” the database to fit your needs. In other words, for the first several years of their existence, they claimed to have a product but they really were a consulting company. Don’t forget this story. Products are valued higher than services. And almost EVERY major software product company was a service company in the beginning. Don’t forget that.E) It’s OK to fail. Start over. Hopefully before you run out of money. Hopefully before you take in investor money. Or, don’t worry about it. Come up with new ideas. Start over.F) Be profitable. Try to be profitable immediately. This seems obvious but it isn’t. Try not to raise money. That money is expensive.G) When raising money: if it’s not easy then your idea is probably incapable of raising money. If its easy, then take as much as possible. If its TOO easy, then sell your company (unless you are Twitter, etc).(if its too easy, sell your company)H) The same goes for selling your company. If it’s not easy, then you need to build more. Then sell. To sell your company, start getting in front of your acquirers a year in advance. Send them monthly updates describing your progress. Then, when they need a company like yours, your company is the first one that comes to mind.Don’t be like that guy in the TV show “Silicon Valley”. If someone offers you ten million for a company that has no revenues, then sell it. Not everything is going to be a Facebook. And even the Google guys tried to sell their company for ONE MILLION DOLLARS to Yahoo before they were revenue positive.SELL THE COMPANY.I) Competition is good. It turns you into a killer. It helps you judge progress. It shows that other people value the space you are in. Your competitors are also your potential acquirors.J) Don’t use a PR firm. Except maybe as a secretary. You are the PR for your company. You are your company’s brand. You personally.I’ve never had a good PR company. I’ve had good PR secretaries. But they are cheaper. One time I hired a PR company and they accidentally sent me the contract for Terry Bradshaw. He was paying $10,000 a month. How did they do for him?K) Communicate with everyone. Employees. Customers. Investors. All the time. Every day.Employees want to know what to do. And they want to know you are thinking of their overall career.Customers want to know how to keep their bosses calm.Investors want to be your friend and want to know they can count on you when time’s are tough.L) Do everything for your customers. This is very important.Get them girlfriends or boyfriends. Speak at their charities. Visit their parents for Thanksgiving. Help them find other firms to meet their needs. Even introduce them to your competitors if you think a competitor can help them or if you think you are about to be fired. Always think first, “What’s going to make my customer happy?”Note: EVEN if that means introduce them to a competitor. If you are the SOURCE, then everybody comes back to the source.M) Your customer is not a company. There’s a human there. What will make my human customer happy? Make him laugh. You want your customer to be happy.N) Show up. Go to breakfast/lunch/dinner with customers. Treat.O) History. Know the history of your customers in every way. Company history, personal history, marketing history, investing history, etc.P) Micro-manage software development. Nobody knows your product better than you do. If you aren’t a technical person, learn how to be very specific in your product specification so that your programmers can’t say: “well you didn’t say that!”Q) Hire local. You need to be able to see and talk to your programmers. Don’t outsource to India. I love India. But I won’t hire programmers from there while I’m living in the US.R) Sleep. Don’t buy into the 20 hours a day entrepreneur myth. You need to sleep 8 hours a day to have a focused mind.If you are working 20 hours a day, then that means you have flaws in how you are managing your time. You can argue about this but it’s true.S) Exercise. Same as above. If you are unhealthy, your product will be unhealthy.T) Emotionally Fit. DON’T have dating problems and software development problems at the same time. VCs will smell this all over you.U) Pray. You need to. Be grateful where you are. And pray for success. You deserve it. Pray for the success of your customers. Heck, pray for the success of your competitors. The better they do, it means the market is getting bigger. And if one of them breaks out, they can buy you.V) Buy your employees gifts. Massages. Tickets. Whatever. I always imagined that at the end of each day my young, lesbian employees (for some reason, most employees at my first company were lesbian) would be calling their parents and their mom and dad would ask them: “Hi honey! How was your day today?” And I wanted them to be able to say: “It was the best!” Invite customers to masseuse day. W) Treat your employees like they are your children. They need boundaries. They need to be told “no!” sometimes. And sometimes you need to hit them in the face (ha ha, just kidding). But within boundaries, let them play.X) Don’t be greedy pricing your product. If your product is good and you price it cheap, people will buy. Then you can price upgrades, future products, and future services more expensive. Which goes along with the next rule.Y) Distribution is everything. Branding is everything. Get your name out there, whatever it takes. The best distribution is of course word of mouth, which is why your initial pricing doesn’t matter.Write a blog about your industry and be very honest about all the flaws (even your own) that is currently in your industry.Authenticity is the best branding.Z) Don’t kill yourself. It’s not worth it. Your employees need you.Your children or future children need you. It seems odd to include this in a post about entrepreneurship but we’re also taking about keeping it real. Most books or “rules” for entrepreneurs talk about things like “think big”, “go after your dreams”. But often dreams turn into nightmares. I’ll repeat it again. Don’t kill yourself. Call me if things get too stressful. Or more importantly, make sure you take proper medicationAA) Give employees structure. Let each employee know how his or her path to success can be achieved. All of them will either leave you or replace you eventually. That’s OK. Give them the guidelines how that might happen. Tell them how they can get rich by working for you.BB) Fire employees immediately. If an employee gets “the disease” he needs to be fired. If they ask for more money all the time. If they bad mouth you to other employees. If you even think they are talking behind your back, fire them. The disease has no cure. And it’s very contagious. Show no mercy. Show the employee the door. There are no second chances because the disease is incurable.I don’t say this because I want anyone to be hurt. But if you’ve followed the rules above then you are treating employees well already. NOBODY should spread the disease and badmouth you or your customers.CC) Make friends with your landlord. If you ever have to sell your company, believe it or not, you are going to need his signature (because there’s going to be a new lease owner)DD) Only move offices if you are so packed in that employees are sharing desks and there’s no room for people to walk.EE) Have killer parties. But use your personal money. Not company money. Invite employees, customers, and investors. .FF) If an employee comes to you crying, close the door or take him or her out of the building. Sit with him until it stops. Listen to what he has to say. If someone is crying then there’s been a major communication breakdown somewhere in the company. Listen to what it is and fix it. Don’t get angry at the culprit’s. Just fix the problem.(you don’t want your employees to be sad.)GG) At Christmas, donate money to every customer’s favorite charity. But not for investors or employees.HH) Have lunch with your competitors. Listen and try not to talk. One competitor (Bill Markel from Interactive 8) once told me a story about how the CEO of Toys R Us returned his call. He was telling me this because I never returned Bill’s calls. Ok, Bill, lesson noted.II) Ask advice a lot. Ask your customers advice on how you can be introduced into other parts of their company. Then they will help you. Because of the next rule…JJ) Hire your customers. Or not. But always leave open the possibility. Let it always dangle in the air between you and them. They can get rich with you. Maybe. Possibly. If they play along. So play.KK) On any demo or delivery, do one extra surprise thing that was not expected. Always add bells and whistles that the customer didn’t pay for. This is such an easy way to over deliver I’m surprised people don’t do it 100% of the time. They do it maybe 1% of the time. So this is an easy way to compete and surprise and delight.LL) Understand the demographic changes that are changing the world. Where are marketing dollars flowing and can you be in the middle. What services do aging baby boomers need? Is the world running out of clean water? Are newspapers going to survive? Etc. Etc. Read every day to understand what is going on.LLa) Don’t go to a lot of parties or “meetups” with other entrepreneurs. Work instead while they are partying.MM) But, going along with the above rule, don’t listen to the doom and gloomers that are hogging the TV screen trying to tell you the world is over. They just want you to be scared so they can scoop up all the money.NN) You have no more free time. In your free time you are thinking of new ideas for customers, new ideas for services to offer, new products.OO) You have no more free time, part 2. In your free time, think of ideas for potential customers. Then send them emails: “I have 10 ideas for you. Would really like to show them to you. I think you will be blown away. Here’s five of them right now.”OOa) Depressions, recessions, don’t matter. There’s $15 trillion in the economy. You’re allowed a piece of it:FedEx, Microsoft, HewlettPackard, and many huge companies were started in recessions or depressions. Leave economics to the academics while they leave good business to you.PP) Talk. Tell everyone you ever knew what your company does. Your friends will help you find clients.QQ) Always take someone with you to a meeting. You’re bad at following up. Because you have no free time. So, if you have another employee. Let them follow up. Plus, they will like to spend time with the boss. You’re going to be a mentor.RR) If you are consumer focused: your advertisers are your customers. But always be thinking of new services for your consumers. Each new service has to make their life better. People’s lives are better if: they become healthier, richer, or have more sex. “Health” can be broadly defined.SS) If your customers are advertisers: find sponsorship opportunities for them that drive customers straight into their arms. These are the most lucrative ad deals (see rule above). Ad inventory is a horrible business model. Sponsorships are better. Then you are talking to your customer.TT) No friction. The harder it is for a consumer to sign up, the less consumers you will have. No confirmation emails, sign up forms, etc. The easier the better.TTA) No fiction, part 2. If you are making a website, have as much content as you can on the front page. You don’t want people to have to click to a second or third page if you can avoid it. Stuff that first page with content. You aren’t Google. (And, 10 Unusual Things You Didn’t Know About Google)UU) No friction, part 3. Say “yes” to any opportunity that gets you in a room with a big decision maker. Doesn’t matter if it costs you money.VV) Sell your company two years before you sell it. Get in the offices of the potential buyers of your company and start updating them on your progress every month. Ask their advice on a regular basis in the guise of just an “industry catch-up”WW) If you sell your company for stock, sell the stock as soon as you can. If you are selling your company for stock it means:a. The market is such that lots of companies are being sold for stock.b. AND, companies are using stock to buy other companies because they value their stock less than they value cash.c. WHICH MEANS, that when everyone’s lockup period ends, EVERYONE will be selling stock across the country. So sell yours first.XX) Execution is a dime a dozen. If you have an idea worth pursuing, then just make it. You can build any website for cheap. Hire a programmer and make a demo. Get at least one person to sign up and use your service. If you want to make Facebook pages for plumbers, find one plumber who will give you $10 to make his Facebook page. Just do it.Fail quickly. Good ideas are HARD. It’s execution that is a dime a dozen.YY) Don’t use a PR firm, part II. Set up a blog. Tell your personal stories (see “33 tips to being a better writer” ). Let the customer know you are human, approachable, and have a real vision as to why they need to use you. Become the voice for your industry, the advocate for your products. If you make skin care products, tell your customers every day how they can be even more beautiful than they currently are and have more sex than they are currently getting. Blog your way to PR success. Be honest and bloody.ZZ) Don’t save the world. If your product sounds too good to be true, then you are a liar.ZZa) Your company is always for sale.AAA) Frame the first check. I’m staring at mine right now.BBB) No free time, part 3. Pick a random customer. Find five ideas for them that have nothing to do with your business. Call them and say, “I’ve been thinking about you. Have you tried this?”CCC) No resale deals. Nobody cares about reselling your service. Those are always bad deals.DDD) Your lawyer or accountant is not going to introduce you to any of their other clients. Those meetings are always a waste of time.EEE) Celebrate every success. Your employees need it. They need a massage also. Get a professional masseuse in every Friday afternoon. Nobody leaves a job where there is a masseuse.FFF) Sell your first company. I have to repeat this. Don’t take any chances. You don’t need to be Mark Zuckerberg. Sell your first company as quick as you can. You now have money in the bank and a notch on your belt. Make a billion on your next company.Note Mark Cuban’s story. Before he started Broadcast and rode it to a few billion, he sold his first software company for ten million.GGG) Pay your employees before you pay yourself.HHH) Give equity to get the first customer. If you have no product yet and no money, then give equity to a good partner in exchange for them being a paying customer. Note: don’t blindly give equity. If you develop a product that someone asked for, don’t give them equity. Sell it to them. But if you want to get a big distribution partner whose funds can keep you going forever, then give equity to nail the deal.III) Don’t worry about anyone stealing your ideas. Ideas are worthless anyway. It’s OK to steal something that’s worthless.IIIA) Follow me on twitter.Questions from ReadersQuestion: You say no free time but you also say keep emotionally fit, physically fit, etc. How do I do this if I’m constantly thinking of ideas for old and potential customers?Answer: It’s not easy or everyone would be rich.Question: if I get really stressed about clients paying, how do I get sleep at night?Answer: medicationQuestion: how do I cold-call clients?Answer: email them. Email 40 of them. It’s OK if only 1 answers. Email 40 a day but make sure you have something of value to offer.Question: how can I find cheap programmers or designers?Answer: if you don’t know any and you want to be cheap: use Hire Freelancers & Find Freelance Jobs Online, Elance, or craigslist. But don’t hire them if they are from another country. You need to communicate with them even if it costs more money.Question: should I hire programmers?Answer: first…freelance. Then hire.Question: what if I build my product but I’m not getting customers?Answer: develop a service loosely based on your product and offer that to customers. But I hope you didn’t make a product without talking to customers to begin with?Question: I have the best idea in the world, but for it to work it requires a lot of people to already be using it. Like Twitter.Answer: if you’re not baked into the Silicon Valley ecosystem, then find distribution and offer equity if you have to. Zuckerberg had Harvard. MySpace had the fans of all the local bands they set up with MySpace pages. I (in my own small way) had Stock Market - Business News, Market Data, Stock Analysis - TheStreet when I set up Stockpickr! Your Source for Stock Ideas. I also had 10 paying clients when i did my first successful business fulltime.Question: I just lost my biggest customer and now I have to fire people. I’ve never done this before. How do I do it?Answer: one on meetings. Be Kind. State the facts. Say you have to let people go and that everyone is hurting but you want to keep in touch because they are a great employee. It was an honor to work with them and when business comes back you hope you can convince them come back. Then ask them if they have any questions. Your reputation and the reputation of your company are on the line here. You want to be a good guy. But you want them out of your office within 15 minutes. It’s a termination, not a negotiation. This is one reason why it’s good to start with freelancers.Question: I have a great idea. How do I attract VCs?Answer: build the product. Get a customer. Get money from customer. Get more customers. Build more services in the product. Get VC. Chances are by this point, the VCs are calling you.Question: I want to build a business day trading.Answer: bad ideaQuestion: I want to start a business but don’t know what my passion is:Answer: skip to the post: “How to be the luckiest person alive”. Do the Daily Practice. Within six months your life will be completely different.Question: I want to leave my job but I’m scared.Answer: same as above question. The Daily Practice turns you into a healthy Idea Machine. Plus luck will flow in from every direction.Final rule: Things change. Every day. The title of this post, for instance, says “100 Rules”. But I gave about 70 rules (including the Q&A). Things change midway through. Be ready for it every day. In fact, every day figure out what you can change just slightly to shake things up and improve your product and company.Your business is not your life. When you start a business you also get a cognitive bias that makes you think your business is GREAT.Every day make sure you are not smoking crack. The most important thing is your health so you can be persistent. If you smoke crack you can die.I hope you succeed. Because I really need that smart toilet that sends my doctors text messages after doing urinalysis on my pee every day.Good luck.
