So it is not that you are physically alone, it is because you are seeking happiness, and in order for you to feel happy, you’ve placed a self-imposed condition in order to experience it, otherwise you will experience unhappiness, which is where you are mistaking the feeling of loneliness with unhappiness.So when you create happiness, you also create unhappiness. You cannot know one state without the other state and both are conditions. These certain conditions lead to happiness for you, if they are not met, your mind will lead you to unhappiness. So what is happiness and unhappiness, it is the desire to want your reality to be different from what it actually is.Some say that if you do not desire, you will be free. This is false. To reject desire, is still a desire to reject and because you create one desire, the other opposite must be known as well and that is why loneliness can feel like a circle with no way out.So the solution is not rejecting desire, and not wanting to desire. I thought about suicide often (though I don't think I'd have actually tried anything) and I wished I could just stop feeling, and over the course of about a year, I did. I don't cry any more, I don't feel empathy for others. I'm not evil or something, I get angry when I hear about child abuse or murders, but I don't feel sympathy. Just today my girlfriend was a mess in tears because her parents are divorcing. I comforted her and tired to make her feel better, but I didn't feel any connection, in fact at times I just wished she'd stop because her sobbing was annoying. Today I realized, I don't love her and I never really have. I care about her safety and don't want to hurt her, but I have no connection to her and I never have. Listen from someone who doesn't feel, what ever you're going through, it must suck, I could relate, but you don't want this. I constantly wonder, whats wrong with me? Am I a sociopath? We need to be careful when discussing Ego because many people do not understand it, and give a lot of bad information.In some religions or other belief systems we are expected to "give up our ego". What a lot of people do not realise is that we first need to have an ego to be able to give it up. When we are born we have no Ego, which develops over time.To some people, "giving up the ego" is a cop out. It often means that they prefer to allow other people to make decisions for them - so they can deny responsibility for their actions. Beware who you decide to follow. The rest of life is concerned with expanding our conscious awareness beyond that of our early upbringing.We also see that Jung stated that the ego develops as a result of inherited human traits and external experience (Nature and Nurture). So the first development of our Ego is the result of parental upbringing. This is why psychologists spend a lot of time looking at our early life circumstances and experiences. At the beginning of life, in the absence of anything else, these are the ones that have the most impact. More so because they control our lives unconsciously. Once we learn something we do it automatically, without thinking. We are "programmed" by habits. We are a small person in a big world - and we depend on others for survival (so we pay close attention to instructions and demands). This attitude is difficult to overcome.EGO DEVELOPMENTAs we grow, we are led to experience a gradually widening consciousness of society. First our immediate family, then close relations, and we gradually move outside the home. All the time we are recording new information. Our Ego does not really start to develop fully until we become free of parental control. It seems closely associated with Free Will - and we do not have much as a child. We can see a main reason for "teenage rebellion" is an attempt to achieve that freedom - but that is impossible until we become financially self supporting. Teenage is an interim stage. "To old for toys. Too young for boys". Another feature of teenage years is that we are exposed to experiences that conflict with our parental upbringing. There are different points of view from our peer group. When we step further into society, such as by meeting parents of friends, or going to work, we are subjected to even more such challenges.Ego development basically means finding our true individual self as separate from upbringing by our parents, and the expectations of our peers, work colleagues, and society as a whole. To do this we have to be like "actors" playing parts on the different stages of life. We have to adapt our behaviour to external circumstances whilst ALSO maintaining our interior sense of integrity (Ego). We have to decide what "programming" is appropriate, and what is not.The next step of development comes around age 30 and after. It does not necessarily affect everyone. Until then we have tended to be "followers" of a path set by our parents. By then we should have become self supporting, and have probably married and reproduced. We have fulfilled our parental expectations and biological function. After this time physical symptoms set in to encourage us to the next stage. The physical body starts to deteriorate. Men find themselves unable to physically compete with younger men in sports, women are coming to menopause. Not too long ago people did not live much beyond age 30.We are coming to the age of "Mid Life Crisis". Life encourages us to take our INDIVIDUALITY development further still. Having got to this stage, we may be in a position that, to friends and society around, we have achieved success. However, an INNER sense of boredom sets in. Perhaps depression. Having achieved what is expected of us, we begin to wonder if there is anything else to life. Nowadays life expectancy can be 100 years.The task now is, having satisfied external needs, we begin to listen to our own inner self, and satisfy INTERNAL needs. A symptom of this is that often in our mid 30s our external life might be going well, but an INNER feeling of boredom or depression sets in.A big factor in this is the need to OVERCOME THE FEAR OF MAKING MISTAKES - which are necessary steps in the Learning Process. We can see this is why we accept information from people who “seem” to know what they are talking about. Some companies spend millions of pounds to deliberately make mistakes. It is called “Research”. We see only the final successful results.MID LIFE CRISISThis is what Jung called the path of INDIVIDUATION. Not many people take this path. It may be they do not get "internal messages" - or if they do, they take no notice because they are too entrenched in the past, and continue to repeat it rather than face an uncertain future. Old habits are hard to break. They look for the bigger house, bigger car, more children ("before it's too late") - or a new partner to relieve the boredom.Some turn to doctors and drugs to relieve the sense of depression, rather than seeking new life.Another problem is that it is rather a lone path, which not many are willing to undertake. As we have already seen, Society prefers people to conform to “the rules”.The main task throughout is to examine all our past programming and decide what is appropriate as an adult in a modern world. The way we do this is to listen to our inner self, and how it reacts to outer circumstances, and, as in a court of law, SEEK EVIDENCE for our previously unexamined beliefs and attitudes. In my case, despite a normal Christian upbringing, and strong scepticism, it involved studying and eventually practising Astrology and Tarot - and other esoteric subjects, such as Psychology. Fear is the most fearful enemy of the human being!Fear is the byproduct of imagined insecurity.Fear is the physical response to a dreaded insecurity while anxiety is a psychological response.Fear, or so called phobias are not developed in a day but they are cultivated over a period of time. There has to be a long and sustained involvement with the fear producing condition for a sufficient amount of time so that there are permanent changes in the structure of the brain.Once it is established, then there is no looking back. It continues to haunt the individual. Fear usually has its origin in childhood. Improper family background, continuous unrest in the family, bereavement in early childhood, and so on.The structure of the brain where fear and anxiety are dealt is amygdala. It is an almond sized part of the limbic lobe. Different parts of which deal with fear and anxiety.There is a very interesting experiment done in rats where the amygdala of a rat was selectively destroyed. Following this, the rat started playing with a cat and was no longer scared of the cat!It does not mean that we can selectively destroy the amygdala in the human beings and cure this. It is not as easy as that, as it has other functions too. Amygdala helps to read the other persons behavior by eye contact or face reading of another person. When this is lost, as in the case of the monkey experiment, where they started analyzing things by putting them in their mouth ((hyperorality). There was hypersexuality and inability to identify the fearful expression of faces etc.Amygdala controls the autonomic nervous system (fight and flight response) and hypothalamus. Exposure to long term social and individual traumatic experiences changes the structure of the amygdala and it becomes a habit for it to fire signals of alarm for every innocuous incident.Yesterday, I was in Delhi and one of my friends came to visit me in the evening. I just thought of calling Meru cabs and book a cab for my morning trip to the airport. My friend raised an alarm, ‘Sir, Delhi people are notorious and they may not come at all.’By that time, I signNowed the counter of the hotel. I asked the manager, ‘How reliable are the Meru cabs?’He said, “They are alright, I have never found them missing a trip.”He continued, “If you are not comfortable with that, I can book a hotel taxi for you and there will be no problem.”My friend raised an alarm again, “If he does not turn up what will you do? The first good thing is, our heart is beating without missing a beat. The stomach is digesting, eyes are seeing the world, the body is functioning normally. How many more positive things are possible?Sit quietly and give thanks to the force that is running your body flawlessly. Close your eyes and think for a while what it is like to be blind.Tie your legs with a rope and see what it is like to be lame.Imagine you are dumb and see how difficult it is to deal with the world.By imagining these positive things nonstop, we would be able to change the connections of the amygdala. It gets resurrected from its flawed connections.The last and a very important suggestion is:Imagine what would happen if you die just now. Nothing belonging to this world stops, except for the absence of your body, there is no change. It means you are not important. If you were to be important, the world would have come to a halt.Imagine that you are dead now and observe the reaction of the world. How many of them would remember you after six months? Why should you weep for the world which does not weep for you? Why should you weep for the body which is either cremated or buried?Keep nursing and encouraging such thoughts, you will change the circuits of the amygdala.
