at both because both of them can be really exciting opportunities for you let's look at physical products on Amazon now the list that is at this link amazon.com forward slash best - sellers /z g b s is updated hourly so if you come back in an hour and twenty seconds the list can change because they're always updating it it's going to their data warehouse and analytics engine and coming back with with new new things now when you go to this link you are gonna look down the left hand side and you're gonna see a ton of categories and they start off with you know Amazon devices and accessories Amazon Launchpad appliances apps and games you can see handmade products you can see home in kitchen if you keep going down lawn and garden pet supplies toys and games video games just to name a few you can explore this and I'm gonna show you how to explore it so if we pick pet supplies immediately what comes up is the best sellers this is in that particular category now if you look down the left you can see the subcategories under pet supplies but we're not gonna focus there right now we're just gonna look at under this broad general heading of pet supplies what are the best-selling products and it looks like doggy pee pads number one I mean there's others that clearly are there but that might give you an indication of some market trends one search technique that you can do is write down these top 10 and try to categorize them and see if there's any anything that comes up that jumps out at you as a need of products that people are buying that can be very important so here's a you know if you drill down into these puppy pet pads I look what happens you know that you can see all sorts of information this is really key when you're writing blocks you're doing videos that you're gonna post your YouTube channel and you're setting up your store or finding other ways to basically monetize this probably typically in an affiliate fashion but we'll talk about others later there's a ton of information here if you drill down and you can find or scroll down you can find the the manufacturer and things like that if you want to do a custom puppy pet peep head so now if you you know we're in the pet supplies there were all those categories and here they are across the top well let's say we pick cats so now we're into a sub category from pet supplies to cats and we can see under cats if we look off on the right food treats apparel beds and furniture you know memorials repellents and training aids and toys and all sorts of things so you know we can drill down in any one of those and now you're down into a you know the sub sub category and you can drill down into three sub categories as you keep going down now this is really important as you're trying to align particular categories with your interests with your capabilities with what needs that you find in the market what market size might be presented to you and what is your motivation to go for that particular category subcategory etc as a business model so now let's look over it Aliexpress so you know you want to find the best products you go to aliexpress.com all - wholesale - products dot html' this thing is updated all the time and not only is it updated like Amazon there are specials there's all sorts of things we're not going to focus on that right now primarily this is physical products and that's what we're looking at here's the broad categories and I mean this is there's a lot more than this but you know if women's clothing through sports and an entertainment and keep jewelry's up there in the upper-right consumer electronics big area here's a listing of all of them and you can look through this you know and you can see what's what's going on so to search a category and see all the subcategories you can just click on on one of them and here I've selected consumer electronics so under consumer electronics there's these 18 categories that you can you can look at and so we'll call those some I guess they're the subcategories and you know we we we want to look at how so that's just looking at the categories now let's look at how we can search and some of the filters that we can put on now if you look up here this is you know in the consumer electronics here's all those categories it's really important to look at free shipping and it's really important to look at the rating of particular products now on the first row they have brands if you're looking at products that are Edifier calm or Samsung or any of these you can click you can then do a price min/max window you can look for items that are on sale items that have coupons and then you can see the results so let's see what that looks like so what I did here is I talked checked the box for free shipping and four stars and up so you're not getting the two in one star but typically visit these are good products and in the consumer electronics there's sixty nine thousand one hundred and fifty-five results that have free shipping and four stars and you can see here's the first four now when we do this in an hour it might be different but nonetheless that's how you can start weeding out you can find the best sellers on Amazon no we can drill further on down you can see we're in consumer electronics but now let's go into sports and action video cameras now if there's eight thousand and forty three results here again the ones that have free shipping and four star or greater ratings and there's different different products that that show up see here was overall and now down in that particular area here are the best sellers so let's say you're into sports and action video cameras you can go in here and you can drill around and you can find out all sorts of things that you might want to have now if we look right under this listing on the indented list on the on the left hand side we can see sports camcorder accessories sports and action video camera and you can start looking at the various types of accessories so finding your sweet spot and we define sweet spot as an area where you it gives you a out of d'Alene you've got motivation there's a decent-size market you've got some capabilities to do something about it and you've drilled in and you found some needs so how do we do that well let's first talk about a lot of you might have come in to create cell bank with a advice is to pick something that aligns with what you want it want to do so put your pre-existing idea as a sixth category these are these are minimums you can have seven eight nine categories that you want to go in we're gonna do this again later on in the course so this is maybe a warm-up so again you could have two categories Amazon 3 from Aliexpress and one from yourself or flip those 3 from Amazon two from Aliexpress or fine from Amazon none from Aliexpress you get the picture and you want to create an evaluation table so you've got your category on the left your bugs you want to rate that on a scale of one to five you want to look at what capabilities you bring or your team brings what's the market size you want to rate that you want to look at your motivation again on a scale of one to five and you are for each category going to do this you're going to actually we're gonna talk about that later wait where you take and you're gonna add up the bugs your bugs rating your capabilities rating in your market rating add that up multiply it by the motivation level and you're gonna get a total so as you can tell I'm waiting motivation very very high having gone through a number of startups if you don't have motivation it's not gonna be a good result in a lot of cases so the first thing is bugs each one of these categories I want you to write down at least ten bugs and you can do a notebook you can do this in a spreadsheet you can do it on a piece of paper you can do it in a notepad and ten is the minimum you want to think about these categories and you want to drill down in so like in the pet supplies category you might list well it bugs me to change the cat litter box it bugs me that there's dog hair all over the house it bugs me that the dog's color doesn't light up at night particularly if you've got a black dog and this can go on I mean this is just three you could come up with ten in the past when I've done this both when I was learning at gives me an edge dot dot put that all all down we're gonna hear an example later on that's gonna really kind of show how that how that worked out of one of the students that's done create cell bank you know you've already picked categories that delight you you know they're they're not you know anyways they delight you so you've gone through that first thing but now do you have the motivation to follow this thing through to set up a long-term business to set up a business that's going to take as long as it takes one to three years to get up and going four or five to start scaling it that you might want to sell or you might want to keep it in the family for a long time you want to you want to actually grow this thing in order to do that you need motivation so keep an eye on that and then you fill out the evaluation table you know I've I've gone through this before you use a rating of one to five you can go through this the market size the largest market you've got of course is five and the smallest is a one and then you can interpolate to find the rest your motivation scale and it's going to it might be a delightful category but you have very low motivation to go do it long term an example of this is I I had designed a suite of kitty litter products when I was at Stanford in just one of the earlier courses and I decided I didn't want to you know it just didn't align with me that I wanted to be manufacturing kitty litter kitty litter boxes kitty litter litter products and things like that but that was just me anybody else could have gone off and did did it as people did and it's now a five billion dollar market so and then so you rate here you know I've done the capabilities the market size your motivation and then you total it up add up bugs your capabilities and the market size all scales with one to five so the maximum can be 15 the minimum we're gonna use one as because it's so called a Likert scale and so the minimum will be three and then your motivation again on a scale of one to five and then the highest score or scores can help you select your sweet spot and here's an example I just I mean there's no category names I just randomly put in things but showing you how to how to calculate it now the category C and me are really close 65 and 60 so you might want to look at them again and make sure then see well maybe you want to do both in the innovation space might want to combine them if they're if they're close enough so that you can go off and do something so you know you can drill down in to that particular category and start finding the subcategories you can do the same thing on Aliexpress and you might find a particular sweet but that's not in the general area but very specific and what what you're looking for is maybe a product that resonates with you hey I I really like that I would like to sell that particular product and make an affiliate Commission and you're a third party in that in that process you're not manufacturing it you're not selling it on Amazon but you are selling it as a third party and for your efforts you get a commission and if it's a low priced product you will get a very small absolute value of commission if it's a high priced product you can get a higher amount so anyways that's kind of an area that you go and then once once you're in your area start looking at the pros and cons of each one of the top ten products both on Amazon and on Aliexpress you know whichever category you you you choose and you should be able to find the corresponding category or subcategory or sub subcategory on Aliexpress that you find on Amazon it just takes you know the wording might be different but you want to explore all the product opportunities so what kind of business models can you have now I have alluded to the affiliate model but you know there's a lot of models and there are people that know how to step stand up businesses but you know we've already talked about the first one you sell them as an affiliate and you get a commission you never touch them but you need to do your create videos create blogs create you know the you might buy Google Ads or Facebook ads or Amazon ads and drive traffic for people that might be interested in that particular area so you could do that but you know see you're risking your capital to make a commission you could go to the manufacturer they showed you how you can find it by just scrolling down on those particular pages and you can find out would they put your logo on there and then you can set up an account with Amazon and let Amazon fulfill your order if you ship all of those from the manufacturer with your label to Amazon they can put it in their warehouse and then ship it out under Amazon Prime and things like that in those particular areas the business model three is you design your own products you get a manufacturer or you find a manufacturer that can manufacture them and then sell them on Amazon you can design your own products get a manufacturer's it manufactured and then sell them in your own online store Wow so you're using Amazon and Aliexpress to do some of your research and physical products but then you can set up your own online store and sell those things more on that later you can design your own products get the manufactured wholesale them to other merchants and let them sell them at retail in their show in their online stores or you can find a product on Aliexpress price it to make a product profit on your store so I'm just gonna leave you as this got you thinking about what we're gonna cover and create
