This is because when the .odt was saved by the person using this technique in MS Word, the page has already been rendered using the Adobe Flash plug in for Adobe Acrobat. Once the Adobe Flash plug in is enabled the PDF page can't be rendered anymore.
There's more than one way to skin this cat, so you can get around this problem by using either a different program for your documents or a tool like the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
