welcome I'm dr. Andrew Wilner author of the locum life a physicians guide to locum tenens today I'm going to discuss chapter 15 mobile office as a locum tenens physician you're going to be here and there and traveling all the time when I worked in one assignment for example I had to fly weekly from Phoenix to Minneapolis every week back and forth I had another assignment I flew from Providence Rhode Island to South Dakota so having a beautiful home office with stacked files and everything organized and a wonderful desktop computer doesn't do you much good when you're on the road so you have to have a good efficient mobile office just like any any other businessman who travels you're going to need the best laptop that you can afford and you can splurge because that expense is going to be tax-deductible see chapter 14 that we just talked about the other day in addition to having a great laptop you want to have some kind of iCloud service some sort of cloud service iCloud for Apple or Dropbox or box or Google there are many pick one learn how to use it you're probably going to end up paying for it because the free service isn't usually adequate but in there you're going to have all the documents that you will ever need because while being a locums physician you're always going to be credentialing for the next opportunity you'll often be asked for diplomas letters of recommendation certificates your DEA and you just want to have all those on a PDF filed away so wherever you are you can instantaneously access them and just email them off so you need a great up top you need a cloud service if you like if you like tablets an iPad or Microsoft version that's great it's great for entertainment it's great for being on the plane and the modern heavy-duty ones are maybe as good as a laptop it's really your preference in addition you want to have in addition to the cloud you want to have some physical backups just in case either the small ones that small drives you can plug in or a portable drive and you want to encrypt it so if by chance you lose it someone else can't just plug it into their computer and read all of your private files software there's a lot of options if you're an Apple person well there's the Apple office suite if you like Microsoft Word Excel PowerPoint that's certainly the most well known Google has its own suite and there are others they all have advantages and disadvantages but the easiest thing to do is just to pick one and learn it well lastly smart phone if you're an apple guy well there's already the iPhone 10 if you're like other brands that's great get the best smartphone that you can afford because you're gonna want to have travel apps banking apps health apps and then medical apps in my smart phone for example I just got an app it cost $4.99 and it has the Snellen a chart it's invaluable I have it with me all the time and of course it has all kinds of other medical aids calculators for phenytoin for creatinine clearance there's a app for the PDR physicians Desk Reference you know it's a five-pound book but it's a very light app lastly as we discussed in chapter 10 on privacy you do not want any patient information on any of your device you are responsible to keep patient information private because of HIPAA right so if you have a problem with your device if you lose it if it gets hacked and patient information gets out it's a disaster so there's really no reason to ever have patient information on any of your devices if you need information when you're not at the hospital get the hospital to get you access so you can access the computer at the hospital where the information is protected and it doesn't go to your own device well that's it for the mobile office good luck it's a lot of fun to have all these gadgets and in chapter 15 I talk in a lot more detail about how to be really well organized so you can be efficient on the road next time in chapter 16 we'll talk about the EMR I'm doctor Willner and thanks for watching
