The answer is simple. It's all based around an algorithm called Extended Validation (EV), an electronic signature algorithm that makes use of both public-key cryptography and asymmetric cryptography. If you've ever used an iPhone to sign a document, you'll be familiar with EV. The algorithm was developed by cryptographers at the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in the United States, and was implemented for use in the US Congress in 2005.
