Bookipi app for Engineering
in this video we're talking about the best engineering student apps in 2020 for your android device and we're starting right now [Music] hey one percent nation i'm jake voorhees and welcome back to the one percent engineer show where we empower young engineers to rise to the top one percent of their career so if this is you make sure you hit the notification bell and subscribe check out the description for access to the one percent engineer kit five free ebooks access to our discord server there's 250 engineers in there there's a link to the ig page and plenty of other supportive resources so check that out i should say really quickly guys that this is an android only video we'll probably make another ios one especially if you guys want an ios video so if you're an ios user comment below let me know because i think a lot of engineers are android users and if we need to make two of these videos we will what's an app that you're using for your engineering success comment below let us know what did this video miss i made this video a couple years ago and even in the last 90 days it's still trending in the top four videos on this channel so we're far overdue for an update and that's what this is so let's jump right into this video content with app number one website number one tip number one which is chegg.com check.com is a website that was not around when i was an undergraduate so i'm jealous of all of you it gets over 60 million hits a month which shows its value and its popularity around the platform it originally started off as a website that would provide you access to textbooks that you didn't have to buy so it can save you money there's also a pro version where you can literally take a photo of a math problem or a homework problem and within an average of 45 minutes a cheg tutor will respond and show you how to actually do the problem it's amazing if i had access to even paid tutors like that and a snapshot to get through a tough homework i would have done that over and over and over again in the comments i've seen that you only get about 25 to 30 professional tutor responses per month or per something but hopefully they've been able to increase this so get chegg for sure guys there's a mobile app there's a study app there's all kinds of other supportive things on the website so go check out chegg.com for sure app number one guys and you may think that this isn't specifically suitable for engineers but it changed my life when i actually started working this way as a student even as a startup professional but you got to put all your stuff in google drive okay it's not the same as just attaching things and moving regular word documents or any sort of other native file ecosystem documents google drives had 6 million reviews on the android marketplace you want to be working in google drive for three big reasons first of all it's all in the cloud so if you forget an assignment if you lose something if you scribble down notes on a piece of paper if you get them into google drive it's in the cloud even if you lost your laptop even if your laptop's dead you need to log into your friend's laptop whatever your situation is the cloud is so much better for data security you have a backup you don't need to put it on an extra hard drive if you don't need to so put it in the cloud once it's in the cloud you have the ability to have multiple people be accessing one document at once so for actual team work and multiple people can be literally editing and adding into a document all the same time you can see each other's cursors they're color coded there's a name tag in them so for actual teamwork it's unparalleled and then finally for document sharing i cannot tell you how frustrating it is when i get an attachment in an email because what if that attachment got sent out to 25 people on one team and everybody makes their comments and then sends them back to the host what are you going to do now this is out of control document version history goes out the window when you attach things so google drive makes it so you have one actual updated file that everybody can be working on at the same time everybody can access at different times everybody can access it from different places because it's the cloud so google drive is just far superior put all your stuff in google drive guys app number three is one that i use on a regular basis at our startup it's just a very simple photo scanning app called cam scanner and to show you how valuable camscanner is has 2.9 reviews and somewhere between a four and five star rating it's really nice you just take a photo of your document it actually identifies the borders and then it lightens it up so it literally looks like you scanned in your homework with a real scanner and then you were able to email it to a professor emailed to a team member so cam scanner is a really quick tool that if you're out and about you don't have access to a real printer copier scanner situation then just download cam scanner it's free google drive is free all these are free so far so use cam scanner guys and then after cam scanner the fourth app that you need to consider is one called microsoft office lens so microsoft office lens can do everything that camscanner can but then there's an additional feature where you can actually scan in files and then manipulate them digitally with office lens this is the difference between cam scanner and office lan so if you just want a simple photo pdf maker cam scanner is the one if you want to be able to scan in things and digitally reconstruct them office lens is the one for you office lens has 536 positive reviews on the google play store so it gets a lot of use all right now we're getting into some actual engineering apps that are great for you there's one called real calc scientific calculator which has 187 000 positive reviews it's a free android calculator app that has all the capabilities required for your engineering scientific calculator so imagine you're off somewhere and you forgot your ti 83 you forgot your scientific calculator whatever you're using you can download this app and you have all of the scientific functionality that you may not have on your phone calculator there may not be as good of a web app tool which is why this actual application works there's a plus version for only a couple dollars that allows you to do fractions degrees minutes seconds customizable functions and higher precision types applications so go play with this scientific calculator for sure guys all these apps are going to be linked in the description below there's no sponsorship there's no affiliate here they're just links so you can go right to them and download them and get started all right the next app is called electro dock electro dock has about 166 000 pieces of positive feedback on the play store i tell you guys how many reviews it has because it shows you how much it's been used i don't know what the ratio is but for an app that has about 100 downloads it might get one or two reviews so with these reviews being in the hundreds of thousands you know it's been downloaded millions of times this app is a great reference for electronics classes there are calculators for color codes of resistors and inductors filters voltage dividers series and parallel circuits and then of course things about ohm's law there are pinpoints for various connectors such as osb ethernet and hdmi so you get to play with lots of different inputs and outputs and of course there are resources for micro controllers resistivity tables wire sizes and standard impedance components use these resources and take advantage to save time for complex electrical calculations so for anybody who's tinkering out there as a mechanical engineer electrical engineer computer engineer who's actually doing things this app is a must go ahead and download electrodoc all right now we have our first free coding application there's one called learn java has 55 000 reviews on the play store so i do think it's the biggest and most prolific free learning application on the play store java is one of the most popular coding languages in the world and is used by many engineers learn java is a free app with 64 lessons covering aspects such as variables loops arrays lists you can track your progress level up and access a discussion forum to answer your questions and even jump ahead if you know the concept already this app is designed to be completed by people who don't necessarily have a lot of coding experience so dive right in if you want to get your feet wet and learn more about java the publisher has a whole bunch of other apps like c and sql python so go ahead and check out that creator the name of that publisher is called solo learn they have a lot of other good products too so go check out the whole family of apps for sure guys all right this is the first one that's actually paid an application called wolfram alpha it's got about 38 000 reviews on the play store which is a lot of reviews which shows you how much has actually been purchased i think it's only three dollars this is essentially the wikipedia for engineering it will answer any type of engineering problem you throw at it you have a tough calculus problem you need to solve you need to balance an organic chemistry equation you need to solve a complicated problem for any type of engineering such as physics materials fluid mechanics whatever it may be wolfram alpha will give you the full step-by-step solution ensuring that you understand how the solution was actually obtained there are several applications within the app related to engineering as well as other scientific uses such as unit conversion computational sciences biology astronomy meteorology and other academic fields or interests around engineering all the reviews say it's well worth the money so if you have three dollars to go towards the play store for wolfram alpha go ahead for it and again we're not making anything off of this there's no affiliate no sponsors no nothing so we're just trying to help you guys we're getting down into the smaller more niche apps that have far fewer downloads this one only has about six thousand reviews in the play store so again it shows you there might be fifty thousand there might be a hundred thousand people out in the world using it but it's far less than chegg that's getting sixty million hits a month every single month or google drive that has 6 million reviews so clearly it's got to have like 100 or 150 million downloads right mechanical engineering 1 is a comprehensive reference guide for engineering students and those in the field to aid in problem solving there are tools for reference tables converters and calculators this app can easily calculate shear force and bending moment diagrams size of mechanical shaft based on inputs of the power speed and strength and can even obtain quick trig angles for right angle triangles along with many other calculations the app supports of course both metric and imperial units and it's just a great supplemental tool for all those other annoying calculators out there here's another niche app guys it's called turbo viewer it's only got about 2 200 reviews on the app store but i couldn't believe what it can actually do because what it allows you to do is actually scan and edit a 2d and a 3d model into the app so for somebody working on some sort of three-dimensional revit or sketchup or solidworks sort of render you could literally scan it take photos of it and then be able to manipulate that diagram within turbo viewer it's a very cool app it's free go ahead and check it out i haven't used it but it's on a lot of engineering blogs so go ahead and explore it guys there's another niche app called frame design it's got about 4 400 reviews on the play store and what it does is it allows engineers and architects to design 2d static structures and perform finite element analysis on them you can generate a geometry add forces distribute loads and supports at various points and the app will calculate reaction forces torques moments and shear forces for you it's a very cool app especially for civil engineers or mechanical engineers anyone who's doing force diagrams dynamics and things like that so go ahead and check out frame design guys okay the final app it's a cute little name it's only got about 300 reviews on the app store but it's called the engineering cookbook it's got a whole bunch of mechanical engineering references so i threw this one in there just because it's a little bit of an index or a glossary or kind of like a quick little reference guide for mechanical engineering terms and concepts and things like that so go ahead and check out the engineering cookbook guys so there we have it which app do you think you're going to use the most which of these was a new type of community or app have you guys ever heard of chegg before are you guys using office lens let me know if this video was helpful and what i missed if you guys have a great app that you want to be included in another video comment below and we'll make another one of these because clearly people want to use engineering apps because they're going back to content from three years ago and if we want to make ios video we will comment below guys look in the description below we need more people in our discord server there's about 250 engineers or so make sure you comment below this video was edited by one of our producers zig simon thank you so much we have a couple more virtual internships and roles within one percent engineer so if you guys want that on your resume linkedin you want me as a reference make sure you comment below maybe you can join the team maybe you're a fit thanks again for watching the 1 engineer show guys if you're a young engineer and you want to rise in the top 1 of your career make sure you hit the notification bell and subscribe thanks again guys we'll see you in another video bye-bye [Music] foreign
