you probably clicked this video because you're wondering why your cold pitches haven't been getting responses or maybe your freelance business is not growing as fast as you would like it the cold hard truth is that the way you are pitching and reaching out to clients could be sabotaging your freelance career and your income before it even really begins that's why today I'm going to walk you through the five most common mistakes that I see Freelancers making every day that are tripping them up I'm going to share with you how to fix them so that you don't make these same mistakes and you can start Landing high quality clients who actually respond to your pitches I come at this from a few different perspectives I freed myself from my 9 to5 by becoming a freelancer via cold pitching I had no experience as a professional writer but because I understood how to grab the attention of prospective clients I got my foot in the door and rinsed and repeated until I was making a full-time income that was in 2019 and I've been self-employed ever since now I Mentor hundreds of freelance writers about how to get that same result how they can pitch to land that high paying client so I'm someone who receives a lot of pitches has sent a lot of pitches even in my former sales career I was doing a ton of cold Outreach whether it was cold calls cold emails cold LinkedIn DMS doorto door all of it so that's why I specialize in teaching Freelancers how to do cold Outreach because it is the fastest way to get your foot in the door if you do it right okay we have a big problem in the freelance world now which is that people are sending the exact same generic pitch and it seems like a template was given out and nobody bothered to change it switch it up personalize it so that's why there's nothing wrong with using templates but we have to customize them or else they're just going to be seen as spam most pitches tend to be self-centered they don't focus on the prospect or the client that you're pitching it's all about you here's what I do here's what I want and if you can flip that your pitch is going to stand out I guarantee you if it is personalized you will automatically cut through the noise the problem is is that there's generic personalization that looks like you didn't even try so here's an example of a pitch that is just very generic hey love what your company's doing I offer freelance writing for example and I believe I can help you grow let's schedule some time of chat whereas look at this pitch down below I notice your company just launched blah blah blah and I know you're targeting this type of audience I've helped similar companies increase their sales and I'd love to show you how we can use email marketing or blog writing to drive even more growth for your business let's connect now as you can see this shows that you understand their business and even if you're a newbie and you're saying well I don't have a name to drop to say I've helped health and wellness companies you can literally just say hey I write in the health and wellness Niche this is why having a niche is so important and I know people love to get up in arms and say that you don't need a niche but how else are you going to make your pitch hyper personalize unless you have something specific and unique about you by niching down you show the prospect or the client that you understand their goals you know how to speak their language and you automatically become the go-to or the no-brainer Choice as to who they're going to hire for this gig sounding robotic can make people's radar go off that this is a salesy or just sounding overly formal you want to sound like a person not a corporate robot and you want to keep your tone more conversational and Casual of course without losing Authority and professionalism so for example I am writing to inquire about potential opportunities you could say something like I noticed that you guys are publishing a lot of blog posts and thought my skills could help you move the needle just sound more conversational I would say the people most vulnerable to this are people who whose second language is English so if English is your second language I would just say be careful about sounding too overly formal you also want to bring down the level at which you are writing so you want to try to be always writing at a seventh grade level that's not super intuitive because you want to show that you're smart that we're a words person especially if you're offering freelance writing services but if you're saying like hello sir or Madam or I would like to inquire you just want to take the reading level down a bit so that you sound more human just keep it simple clients are just people they're most likely going to want to work with people that they can relate to on a human level not someone who is robotic when you reach out to clients it can be really tempting to just rattle off all of the things about you what makes you unique what you write what you do and we really want to focus our messages on what the client is doing and what the client wants to achieve and anytime we're talking about ourselves or our experiences or our qualification it should tie back to how how it will benefit the client so if you have a master's degree in bioengineering and you are pitching marketing copyrighting Services you have to actually draw that line between why your master's degree matters to the client because just the fact that you are master degree educated is actually going to mean nothing to the client they're going to want you to connect the dots and actually prove how that master's degree ties directly to your skills and how you're able to deliver the product or the service another mistake is not being Direct not making the ask now people get confused about this and they'll message me and say Christine I heard that you're not supposed to pitch slap and just go straight in for it CU I get so many of messages from people I don't know why they think anyone on Earth would have the time to answer a question like this what's your biggest business challenge right now why did you get into business I get this from people I I don't know why I see this so much whoever put this out there please stop telling people to do this if you are pitching anyone of importance who has a job and responsibilities they're not going to answer someone online a stranger who's literally saying what's your biggest challenge right now you might as well ask like what color underwear are you wearing right now like who are you why are you asking me this what business do you have asking me what my biggest business challenge is come out with what you are saying be direct make your ass I respect that so much more and so will your clients because it shows that you're not wasting their time don't make it weird okay if your biggest fear is pitch slapping I would much rather have you be afraid of this awkwardness and being a weirdo and a creep with this then pitch slapping this is more like what you should be saying I work with health and wellness businesses like yours helping them generate more traffic based on what I've seen with your product I think blog writing could be the perfect service to help you generate more traffic like this is what's going to get answered at the end of the day okay you're being clear you're being specific you're being direct you're telling them why it's relevant and you're not wasting their time most importantly so when you reach out to somebody let's say you have the absolute perfect pitch and this has happened to me where people write a pitch it catches my attention it looks like something I want to learn more about but then they have nothing built they have no website nothing to build trust no relevant samples that help me understand that they actually can help me this is the problem right so you need to be able to say I have completed work in your industry before I've worked with business owners in the same industry as you and here's why you should give me a chance and if you don't have experience which a lot of people who watch my channel are newer Freelancers aspiring Freelancers or they're just new to cold pitching just even saying hey I write for health and wellness companies I write for construction companies being able to say I have helped business owners like you achieve your desired goal is what makes a pitch captivating now for those who are positioned correctly or maybe they do have a website just sending them the link to your website or your portfolio often is not enough because it's basically expecting the client to sort through your website or your online presence and it's kind of saying like here you go go search through it the client's really not going to put that leg work what you should be doing is curating your portfolio number one to make sure that it's hyper targeted and you want to go a step further and say I just completed this blog post for XYZ company I think it will appeal to you because I know your target is this you're basically saying I have pulled my samples for you I've done the leg work for you to prove that you are somebody that I've personally reached out to and that I'm not sending this to just anyone and everyone okay so this mistake right here is if I had to guess why the Freelancers are not making what they want to be making and they're not seeing results with their cold pitches it's because they are not following up and if they are following up they're sending some generic oneline followup that takes no effort saying like just following up just bumping this back just circling back on this you don't want to be doing that there is a proper way to follow up that actually shows that you're continuing to provide value and sending tailored personalized pitches to the client instead of just annoying them people don't follow up at all because they are afraid of being annoying or B they know they have to follow up cuz they've heard that somewhere but they're not saying the right thing I need you to know this if you are sending cold pitches but not adequately following up on them you are leaving money on the table and what's even worse is that you're wasting your time because by sending the pitch you've only done 50% and you're not completing the other 50% that's required to get a response this is about numbers you have to be paying attention to numbers let me explain what I mean by that just doing an activity let's say fits and spurts right like let's say you're pitching um all day on a Tuesday you send 25 pitches then you don't do it again until 2 weeks later that is a waste of your time you should be consistently sending cold pitches on a daily or weekly basis whether that's you know I send pitches every week from Tuesday through Thursday and I send five pitches a day that's much better than saying I pitched a 100 times on Wednesday but then didn't do it for another month you have to take advantage of the compound interest and constantly going back to your list of prospects that you're reaching out to and saying okay where did I leave off with this guy what did I say to this guy last it's through that process that you will eventually get your foot in the door with these clients but it does not happen without follow-up I just did a video on follow-up that I will link to above but most deals are closed on like the fifth try right that's just a general sales stat not specific to freelancing but the number of opportunities that are made with just one Outreach one message are like 1% right so we have to make sure that we're doing the rest of the job here if you have been struggling with what to say in your pitch or you feel like you're trapped in this never-ending cycle of editing overanalyzing and then getting ghosted well you're in luck because I created the freelance template Playbook to literally give you my tried and tested templates so that you can copy and paste them make them your own and start Landing high paying client these templates cover every situation from cold pitching to following up to raising your rates to handling uncomfortable situations the reason I created the freelance template Playbook was that students were going through my course 30 days to paid and Landing their first high-paying client and then they were just asking now what do I do the client said this how do I respond they want an invoice how do I send this how do I word this and throughout all of those questions over the years that Freelancers have asked me I created a living breathing document that contains every single interaction you can think of with a mini lesson educating you on why you're saying what you're saying so whereas everyone else is sending these generic copy and paste pitches out there and just giving Freelancers a bad name this document educates you on why you're saying what you're saying so that you can put it in your own voice and you can tailor it to your industry I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that people buy this Temple pack and come back to me and say that people not only responded but responded saying thank you so much for reaching out thank you so much for not sending a generic pitch like everybody else does That's The Power of pitching correctly and this template pack has every situation whether it's cold pitching whether it's following up whether it's raising your rates whether it's telling a client you're not going to meet a deadline it's how to be professional it's the soft skills of your freelance business that not a lot of people touch on because they just focus on how to deliver work in your trade versus the client facing aspect and how to actually manage clients so that you can build a thriving business and what's different about the freelance Temple play Playbook and why it's such a steal is that you buy it once but I continually update and add new tactics new strategies based on the feedback I'm getting if I get a question about what do I say to this you can bet it's going to be in the freelance template Playbook if I get an
