I know when you're getting started with newborn photography it can be totally overwhelming a lot of the times you don't know what is right what is wrong all you know is you kind of lack some confidence and you just really aren't sure if you're on the right track well in today's episode of Milky Way TV I want to go over my eight top mistakes brand new newborn photographers make to help you avoid them if we haven't met I'm Lisa from milk and honey photography and the Milky Way and I inspire empower and educate photographers just like you to create the business art and life of their dreams so in today's episode I want to go over the top eight mistakes that brand new a newborn photographers make so the first mistake is number one is expecting everything to go perfectly now when you get your new year when you're working with your brand-new babies with your first newborn sessions I know how easy it is to have expectations that everything is going to be going perfect the first time my friends this is not the case do you expect babies to poop on everything to wake up to fuss to have Jessie bellies you're not going to be able to get every single pose especially in your first few sessions have kindness to yourself and low expectations pick one pose just one pick one pose and work on that pose with that one baby don't take every idea that you've ever wanted to do and try to do it with one baby because you will be setting yourself up some for some sore disappointment my friends and it's one thing I definitely hear so much from our students is that they have such big expectations they thought it was going to be easy and a lot of the time it's not but we all go through this so step number one is pick one pose and work on it mistake number two that I see quite often is something called Google lighting it's incorrect lighting basically what it is is when you're taking your lighting and instead of having the light glide down baby's head you're actually up lighting so you're taking it where it looks like there's like a flashlight under baby's face that doesn't look right so what I want you to look for is when you're lighting always have baby's head facing the top of the head facing the light and we're going to be looking for is a little butterfly shadow underneath the nose and what it is is is just underneath the nostrils and in this divot here you're looking for that little shadow when you see that you're gonna know that you've got correct lighting mistake number three is not having the correct exposure by not on your camera properly not reading your manual and just expecting things just fall into place not knowing how the settings work together knowing what aperture you need what shutter speed you need and what ISO you need to work together to get that correct exposure you need to work on those and master those so you can change them whether you're using natural light or studio light so you're able to dial in that perfect exposure that's a thing with creamy dreamy newborn skin is you need to be able to have that correct exposure in order to get it there you don't want to be polishing things in Photoshop you want to make sure you get it right in camera mistake number four is hurrying baby along you need to be patient patient patient patient patient patient to the umpteenth level you guys you need to be so patient because when you're rushing baby and baby isn't quite in that REM cycle falling asleep if you're not gonna be able to pose baby it's gonna be it's going to take far longer you're gonna be frustrated baby's gonna be frustrated because you keep waking him or her up what you need to do is just be patient wait it out and wait for that baby to be in a deep sleep to start posing mistake number five is buying everything on the planet you do not need everything to get started with newborn photography all you really need is something soft to put baby on something to clamp your your blankets to a blanket maybe a couple hats a couple headbands literally that is it maybe a rapper too but do not buy everything under the Sun because you cannot shop your way to being a better photographer what you need to do is practice practice practice and more practice and that's how you gonna learn as you're posing mistake number six that I see is a wrinkly backdrops the what you'll really notice with professional photographers is their beautiful creamy bokeh filled wrinkle free backdrops and if you have wrinkles in yours hey you're gonna be super frustrated that you didn't pull it tight beforehand and B you're gonna be frustrated that you have to figure out in Photoshop how to fix it so what my type is is always make sure you have claps on hand you've got something to clamp your blankets to so you're not having to worry about those wrinkly old backdrop mistake number seven is charging before you are ready now I'm not saying that your time isn't worth something because I do truly believe that is the case however if you are in the process of building your portfolio and you're not able to give consistent images to your clients it is so important that you when you're taking someone's hard-earned money that you are giving them something of value if it's if it's work that you are not proud of sweetheart do not start charging until you were ready my rule of thumb is when you can provide 30 images in a style that is all your own that you love that you're proud of with proper exposure with good looking skin and consistency then that's when you know it's time to start charging mistake number eight is portfolio building sessions and not taking control now when you're modeled calling for portfolio building sessions this is for you to learn this is not a free-for-all for your for your clients to come and give you a hundred Pinterest ideas for you to do everything that they want these portfolio building sessions are for you a to build your portfolio B to learn C to get your hands on baby so you can practice so if if you're treating at these portfolio building sessions as your clients and letting them dictate what they want it's not in your best interest girlfriend you need to be taking charge these sessions knowing these are for you picking one pose per baby and making sure that you work on that if they want a full session hey maybe four they can pay for a session to someone else and that's totally cool but these portfolio building sessions are for you to learn it's not free for all for your clients so I hope this helped these are my top eight mistakes that I see for new newborn of photographers if you have not yet subscribed make sure you ring the bell so you don't miss a single trick tip or tutorial and also don't forget to download we've got a free newborn posing guide with all the names all the poses so you can have it on hand when you're practicing during your sessions thank you so much for watching and I will see you in the next episode
