the truth about becoming a commercial plumber now you might be wondering what the difference is between commercial and residential well in this video i'm gonna give you my eight biggest things that i know of to be the difference and you hang around to the very end and i'm gonna tell you what the biggest difference is and it's one you'll think about every day now throughout my career i've done commercial residential construction service i've been union and non-union so i know a little bit about what i'm talking about anyway today i'm going to talk about commercial and residential i'm going to give you pros and cons of each and at the end i'm going to tell you the biggest reason why i like residential now if you've never been here before and you get value do me a favor hit the subscribe button and ring the bell so you don't miss out on anything so working commercial working residential there's a big difference in them but i'm going to start out with a commercial job because parking can be a pain i think you've got room to back up i remember working out at dfw airport it wasn't just the parking it was where you had to park you had to get to the job about 45 minutes early just to get to the job site because you had to park remotely get on a bus ride into the terminal and then get into your work area we're at the airport yeah so i already seen the airport now this takes a while and part of it is on your time we ended up negotiating a deal where people could come in on their own time but then leave on our time so if they work from 7 to 3 30 they'd come in and get on the bus between 6 and 6 15 to be in the area by 7 for the safety meeting then we made sure they were done by 245 so they could be out at the bus by 3 30. that's a give and take and they don't always have to do that they could have just said look the job starts at 7 it ends at 3 30 be here and stay till then but what about other areas just work in downtown you may have to park in a parking lot you may have to pay for it you probably will have to pay for it and then you've got to get over to the job site so that's kind of a con about commercial work but there's benefits to it too and i'll talk about them in a little bit number two is the wasted hours getting started once you're there you've got to get everybody together you've got to go through a safety meeting sometimes there's job site safety meetings now i have nothing against safety but you can only talk about the same thing over and over and over again so many times so safety meetings can be good and don't get me wrong i think they are good but when people are doing what they're supposed to do and jobs around safely let's ease back on the meetings a little bit because man people get really frustrated having to go these meetings all the time and to be honest most people are on their phone playing not really listening and paying attention so a waste of time getting started you may have gang boxes you may have certain areas where you can store your tools there's a lot of time wasted and it makes you look bad production wise number three the meetings now don't get me wrong i think meetings are great and you need these but too many meetings can really pull you out of your game let's start by conserving our time and stop having these stupid meetings no more meetings no more meetings meaning you're in the field you're working with the guys and then wait i've got to stop and go to another meeting i think sometimes you can have a little too many meetings and a lot of times i think meetings will be better off in the field walking through a project looking at things that you're talking about not just sitting in the trailer a mile down the road saying hey look what do we have to do down there number four and this is one of my favorite the team atmosphere you're working with a group of guys if you're on a big project and trust me i've been on some big ones at one point i was on a crew that had 105 men on it and that's just the plumbers pipefitters and welders so that was a neat job you build relationships with other trades you make friends with other trades you get to help them and watch them and learn what they do and hopefully they're watching and learning what you do too you get to work hand in hand with them where you're all building the same thing you're working towards a common goal and i gotta tell you this is one of my favorite things about being on a commercial site is the camaraderie the friends you make in other trades the team atmosphere everything about it that makes it cool now one of my other favorite things is job tracking if you know how many hours it takes to hang a certain sized piece of pipe you can literally draw this out on the blueprints track it down and say okay it should take us this many hours to do this then if you've got a journeyman and an apprentice you divide that number in half it's easy to look at a job and tell a guy hey this is how many hours you have to do this it's not just hey i need this done fast your idea of fast and his idea fast may be two completely different things so what you can do on a bigger job like this now you can do it in residential too but guys go on so many jobs a day that you've literally got to spend time breaking down each and every job now on a commercial job it's easier to break down because you break it down by the task maybe it's the sewer system on the fourth floor you can go through and measure out all the pipe all the fittings all the hangers and start putting times to it and then you have something to do your job cost analysis with you can actually look at it and know what it takes to do or before the job start it's a great tool to have and a great thing to use if you're a foreman a superintendent or a project manager number six and this is kind of something i mentioned a while ago about the teams but i love working around other trades i love seeing what they do and how they do it the neat thing about it is if you build good relationships with these other trades when you run into a problem man now you get to collab right there in the field hey let's get together and figure out what is the best way to get around this now if you're working on a job that has been drawn up through bim and autocad and all that you may have to get other people involved but when you're the one there in the field looking up saying okay this is what we've got this is where we're at and you can look at coordinated drawings and say hey apparently they missed something here what can we do to fix it anytime you bring a problem to a general contractor also bring a solution if you're building good relationships with the other trades to where you're trying to work together this is a great thing to do number seven and this is pros or cons depending on how you look at it how you like it and this goes back to the residential part now remember earlier i talked about you know driving a long way and a hard time to get into a commercial job residential normally you pull up to the office you hop in a company truck and you go in or they give you a company truck and you just go from job to job to job the neat thing is there's not a lot of extra time just trying to get everything ready now you may go in in the morning for a meeting and stock your truck but that's a big difference there now what i'm going to talk about on number seven this gets into more residential because would you rather work in a high rise where you're 30 40 50 stories off the ground or would you rather work on the ground every day meaning you're in a one or two two-story house maybe an apartment building so high-rise versus residential some people they don't like heights they're like yeah i could never go up 30 floors and work near the edge of a building residential another good thing is you're on a different job all the time now you may get stuck on a job that may last a few days but a commercial job you can be on a job that lasts a few years really that is a big deal to a lot of people they don't want to get stuck on the same job forever now i've been on some jobs up to five years i've been on some commercial jobs as short as two or three months now commercial service is going to be the same way once you figure out how they're built and you know how to fix them you could be in a truck going to different commercial jobs all day repairing flush valves unclogging drains changing valves out doing all kinds of different things now you want to hear the biggest difference and the biggest reason i love residential when you're on a commercial job you've normally got 30 minutes for lunch so you either bring your lunch or you eat off the roach coach yes the roach coach no god please no no well actually it's the catering truck but here's the deal if you're residential you can normally run somewhere grab something to eat so the lunches are normally a lot better now if you're on residential construction where you're in a neighborhood where there's a lot of building going on they may have a roach coach that comes out there if you're in the trades and you do commercial or you do
