down with random shootouts and blowups I was really trying my best not to be a complete hater but using the race card as the foundation for repetitive jokes was not really my thing Steve zon is actually very funny and great at not overplaying his role especially compared to Lawrence who got to be a bit overzealous with the silly action Factor it was cool to see Bill Duke make an appearance as a LAPD police captain and join in on the fun Al though the whole production seems to be the same joke told a thousand different ways the film is good for a couple of hews at the very least Martin Lawrence rants endlessly against the white man and Steve zon tries to endure him in the obnoxious Odd Couple action comedy National Security Colombia directed by Dennis Dugan when Earl Montgomery Lawrence and Hank Rafford ton first meet neither is in a good mood Hank is a cop whose partner was recently killed investigating a warehouse break while Earl has just been thrown out of the police academy program after recklessly destroying a police cruiser and displaying nothing but insolence toward Authority when Hank comes across Earl struggling to reach his car keys through a partially closed window his initial response to this potentially suspicious scene is brusk but professional Earl however is immediately abusive and defiant escalating the situation to a minor struggle unfortunately as videotaped by a passer by the confrontation looks suspiciously like police brutality especially when a b bumbles into the scene leading the highly allergic Earl to drop thrashing onto the ground while Hank wildly swings his billy club at the bee and tries to stomp it to death at the trial Earl falsely testifies against Hank playing the victim to the sympathetic all black jury while Earl's persecution complex paranoia is so profound that he may actually believe that he was the victim of excessive force he unambiguously perjures himself regarding the role of the bee in order to shaft Hank although previously Earl had told police about the bee Hank is somehow unable to establish the basic facts in court found guilty Hank is sentenced to 6 months in prison where he must assault guards and incur solitary confinement simply to survive the Wrath of the black prisoners 6 months later back on the street he takes a job as a security guard while working on his own to find his partner's killer his efforts lead him to another where warehous theft where he is stunned to run across Earl also working as a security guard the bad guys flee leading to a high-speed chase that ends with both Hank and Earl in police custody maddeningly despite the fact that the interrogating officer a black lieutenant Bill Duke who is one of Hank's former colleagues personally heard Earl's original admission about the bee and knows how unreliable he is Hank is treated as a liar and a criminal who is stalking Earl while Earl is again treated as a victim Earl meanwhile is tickled by the notion of again falsely testifying against Hank and sending him back to prison but relents after extorting an apology from Hank for the original beating never in the whole movie does Earl apologize to Hank for any of this or undo any of the damage he has done in Hank's life Earl never even acknowledges that he lied at Hank's trial he consistently maintains his delusional conviction that he really was beaten nor does he get any comeuppance for his beh Behavior instead the movie Winks at his outrageousness and rewards his brashness for example the film demeans its entire female contingent by having every single woman respond to Earl's dubious charms over time Earl does come to sympathize with Hank especially when he realizes that Hank's conviction cost him not only his job and his freedom but his girlfriend as well yet even then instead of apologizing Earl says sympathetically you know what you are Hank you're a black man one of Earl's lowest moments comes after offering to help Hank win back his ex-girlfriend by backing up Hank's contention that there was no beating though to Hank Earl maintains that this will really be in lie when the moment actually comes Earl reigs upon discovering that Hank's ex-girlfriend is a beautiful black woman his Unapologetic explanation he's against interracial romance that is when it's the man who is white besides the film's other problems there are huge plot holes such as how the protagonists who are wanted by police get a van loaded with stolen goods off a garbage scow without being caught and the danuma is unnecessarily extended by an overlong shootout action sequence culminating in an unabashed revenge- driven climax Earl's endless racist Rants and insolence toward Authority being played for Laughs are generally more tasteless than offensive especially since he himself admits in one scene that even he doesn't necessarily believe everything he says Yet the movie plainly expects the audience to enjoy the prospect of a beleaguered white man suffering at the hands of a smug self-righteous black man who never owns up to what he's done never gets his comeuppance and is rewarded in the end with a batch to top it off any potential sympathy for innocent white men or cops getting a raw deal is offset by introducing a corrupt white police Lieutenant as the villain other information about this film National Securities paper thin plot utility shootouts and assorted car car chases would not have amounted to much of anything if it hadn't been for the effective chemistry and a candid new look at race relations brought to the surface by this Odd Couple of law enforcement which race aside turn out to have a lot more in common than they expected The Story begins with a couple of Los Angeles police officers responding to a report of possible suspicious activity in a warehouse and running smack into the middle of an elaborate high-tech heist in the ensuing shootout one of the officers gets killed and his partner Hank played by Steve zon feeling partially responsible vows not to rest until he finds the killer a few days later Earl Montgomery Martin Lawrence an African-American Police Academy trainee finds himself booted from the academy for wearing his race a little too loudly on his sleeve and humiliating his instructor in the process while wrecking one of the Academy's training cars compounding his troubles Earl locks himself out of his car Hank who happens to be passing by on routine Patrol approaches Earl as he tries to break into his car a heated war of words ensues between the two men and promptly escalates when Earl accuses Hank of racism just as Hank is about to arrest him a bumblebee starts to buzz around the two men Earl is highly allergic to bees and freaks out Hank wildly swings his baton at the bee and tries to stomp it with his feet but a bystander records his actions with a home video the camera lens is partially blocked by by Earl's car however the resulting footage erroneously depicts Hank's attempts to keep the Bumblebee from stinging Earl as the actions of a white policeman beating an innocent black motorist Hank is found guilty by an all black jury and loses his job with the police department even going to jail for a short time Hank also loses his black girlfriend played by Robin Lee eventually both Hank and Earl wind up working for the same Security Agency against their most fervent desires they find themselves linked together as reluctant Partners chasing a vicious band of Smugglers while the entire LA Police Department chases them National Security does not have very much to endorse it is Laden with obscenities vulgarities gratuitous action violence and some partial nudity the plot is unimaginative and totally generic on the other hand this movie takes a surprisingly sharp and honest look at racial Politics as they exist in America today especially in the area of law enforcement and the t issue of profiling Martin Lawrence plays an insufferable loudmouth hiding behind his race for his own selfish purposes but he manages to present this controversial subject in a light-hearted and occasionally truly funny way using this skillful device Martin Lawrence makes it much easier to raise some serious questions about racism without offending anyone while working with a fragile vehicle at the same time this is a feet not to be quickly dismissed Steve zon equally plays a strong role as the boring but honest and definitely non-racist white cop the rest of the cast colem Fury Eric Roberts Bill Duke and Robin Lee also do a credible job but not much more obviously I have seen many a movie over the years but it's a rare one that I find too unbearable to sit through to the very end no matter how bad it may be after about 40 minutes of Martin Lawrence's colossal stinker National Security I could take no more offending my every sensibility I just could not take any more horrendously bad humor and noise pollution and what's worse is how Cavalier it is in playing the race car to try to get laughs now I've sat through many comedies which didn't make me laugh before too but this one is different it actually made me angry this is a level of anger at not just how bad it is but how careless it is in using a legitimately real issue the lack of respect between the Los Angeles police and the African-American community at patrols and using it as a platform for ugly racist remarks and fostering stereotypes what's worse is that this film only serves to exacerbate the problem rather than bring levity because it clearly displays a loud and obnoxious black man speaking broken English and offensive slang making up a phony story of police brutality simply as an excuse for his idiotic Reckless Behavior this undermines a legitimate problem on abuse of Authority among police officers and even if it stars Martin Lawrence Black Knight Big Mama's House the message delivered is that the African-American Community are a bunch of lying whiners that will do anything to antagonize police into violence so they can point out how racist it is in a film full of so many incredibly bad elements the fact that they were able to cast an African-American willing to make a mockery of the legitimate pleas of actual victims of racist police brutality is beyond comprehension especially a comedian held in such high regard the film starts off with Earl Lawrence in the local police academy trying to become a police officer but being so antagonistic and Reckless as to get himself kicked out on the spot on the way out he realizes he had locked his keys in his car and while trying to fetch them out a passing patrol car driven by Hank Zan Joy Ride spots him and questions his intent Earl immediately claims that Hank is a Nazi and racist Pig for thinking he might be trying to steal a car and his insults eventually lead Hank to try to make an arrest while undergoing arrest Earl spots a large B floating around which he is allergic to leaving Hank to try to sweat the be away an eyewitness to the events thinks Hank is beating Earl when he sees the Baton flailing around so he videotapes it and to all appearances Hank is employing police brutality although wanting to be one Earl hates cops so much that he is willing to let Hank go to jail for the incident upon his release police Hank can only find work as a security guard for a company called National Security which employs Earl as well although the two hate each other they are forced to work together in taking down a crime ring which may have been responsible for the death of Hank's partner even without the offensive subject matter National Security is a terrible film possibly the worst in Lawrence's not too impressive career not all of the blame can be linked to Lawrence especially when you look at the filmographies of the creative forces behind IT director Dennis Dugan's most recent efforts include the sophomoric comedies Saving Silverman and Big Daddy screenwriters Jay Garrick and David Ron's claims to scripting Fame are working on I spy and serving Sarah two films not known for sparkling dialogue with such a dir of talent it's probably no surprise that this project was DOA from inception National Security is not recommended for anyone save Martin Lawrence's most unwavering of fans it's as grading on one's nerves and intelligence as any film in recent years and if anything I wish it would kill the career Lawrence once and for all of course I won't get my wish with the kind of crap Lawrence's fans have sat through already one would gather the threshold for entertainment is sufficiently low enough that he can keep spoon feeding them rotting sewage like this while they only gulp it down readily smile and ask for more more details thrown into prison on false harassment charges LAPD cop Hank zon loses his badge his girl and his partner in a matter of days but as fate would have it he and his accuser Earl Lawrence team up 6 months later to investigate a smuggling operation it's not that National Security makes a mess of mixing its action shootouts and comedy routines it's not even that the Buddy pairing is fatally mismatched with zon showing more talent in a single hair of his mustache than Lawrence does in his entire body no this is a two-star movie dragged down a star because of its unrepentant racism at one point Earl says he doesn't condone interracial relationships Hank's ex is black later he chats up a white chick when challenged he revises his opinion he doesn't condone interracial relationships when the man is white they expect you to laugh at the having the afternoon free I decided to catch a movie preferably one that would provide adequate fodder for an especially ruthless review the noon hour is rarely a time for a thinking man's picture so I deliberately chose something mindless and if I was lucky humorous in a guilty pleasure sort of way I decided to forgo a guy thing perhaps another time and selected National Security the latest in a long long line of action-oriented buddy cop films starring Martin Lawrence's Earl and Steve Z as Hank National Security is just that sort of film that keeps me up nights far too harmless to get upset about yet so benign and boring that it becomes as difficult to work up a sufficient rage for its incompetence I sat stupified that this screenplay was approved by anyone in the chain of command because it is no exaggeration to say that not 1 second of the film contains an ounce of originality it might have worked as a tongue and cheek spoof of such films even that genre is tired but at least there would have been some level of self-awareness but instead the filmmakers are playing it straight they want to believe that we haven't seen this crap thousands of times before Earl is a loose cannon who is thrown out of the police academy for his bad temper and even worse attitude Hank is a brooding cop in the LAPD who watches his partner get killed and then vows revenge in the days following his partner's death he finds Earl with his hand through the window of a car and assumes he is stealing the vehicle Earl pulls an attitude accuses Hank of being a racist in the first of at least 300 racial jokes none of which weren't covered in Beverly Hills Cop and the two scuffle a bumblebee flies into Earl's face Hank tries to sweat it away and a man in a nearby park videotapes the entire episode which of course looks like another Rodney King type beating it continues Hank is convicted of battery sentenced to 6 months in jail and upon release is forced to get a job as a security guard he continues to pursue the killers of his partner and in the process interrupts a robbery at the very location where Earl also works as a security guard in order not to bore you further the two team up continue to bicker and expose a vast criminal conspiracy involving dirty cops a stolen Atomic alloy worth millions of dollars that has been melted down into beer kegs for Easy Transport and a criminal mastermind played by Eric Roberts with a blonde die job needless to say the two former enemies are given new posts in the LAPD and the film ends as they fight crime together on the streets of Los Angeles there I just saved you eight bucks now log off the computer and do something else with your time do I really need to tell you that characters run across the screen in slow motion as they fire their machine guns do I need to reveal that as one of the characters is facing certain death at the hands of the villain the other comes to the rescue at the very last moment or what about the character that is shot and screams and cries and talks about dying and is later told that the wound is only a scratch and of course need it be mentioned that Martin Lawrence is playing yet another character that obsesses about race and recycles jokes that might have been deemed risky in the Ford Administration how about the uptight white man partnered with the crazy black man ticking them off one by one the cliches pile up like the blood clots in my tortured Brain still I wasn't angry this film does not reveal anything about the American people nor is it a sign of anything wrong with the state of the culture it merely occupies A Space in Time and will be instantly forgotten by all who view its contents either excite me with cinematic Brilliance or infuriate me with true Soul crushing horror to go through to the Motions to this extent merely sends me walking from the theater no worse than when I arrived shrugging my shoulders with an expression that will be gone by the time I start my car still I do have something to say about my fellow patrons picture this I am alone in the theater with only a few minutes until Showtime because it is one of life's true Pleasures to see an afternoon film without anyone else around truly alone I smiled in anticipation of my private exclusive screening to come before my grin subsides I watch a family of five one mother for young kids walk in and in an empty theater plops are brewed down right in front of me hundreds of other seats available and the dumb decides to subject me to her horrible wretched family I am simply too stunned to move I could sooner understand the mind of God before I could penetrate the thought process behind such an act I realized of course that I was not in a screening of the latest Merchant SL Ivory film so one must lower expectations right then at least 15 other people tumbled in making it to their seats just as the previews began without exception they were all young boys ready to watch the expected Gunplay titty action and jokes while I did hear a peep now and then from the brats in front of me the rest of the crowd was strangely eerily quiet no one it seems was having a very good time it all made sense to me perhaps these young men like so many other Americans do not go to the movies for any reason whatsoever least of all to be entertained the movie house is a place to kill a few hours beach scened by fellow young people and have something anything to talk about the next day at school it is where people desperately search for that elusive common experience or perhaps not I don't know I just need a nap and a little something to dull the pain extra information National Security is living proof why January is often called a movie graveyard the month where a Studio's weakest movies are unceremoniously dumped for a lack of either commercial viability or quality directed by Dennis Dugan 2001's Saving Silverman National Security May at first glance look like nothing more than another harmless formula buddy action comedy but it isn't within the first 10 minutes it becomes readily apparent that it has a non too subtle racist agenda that is Thoroughly unfunny and repellent first the Disposable plot Hank Steve zon is a cop mourning the untimely death of his partner who was shot in the line of duty Earl Martin Lawrence is a wouldbe LAPD recruit kicked off the training program because of his antisocial Behavior when Hank mistakenly thinks that Earl is trying to break into a car and threatens to arrest him a scuffle ensues unfortunately from the bad angle that the incident was caught on camera it looks as if Hank was beating Earl up when in actuality he was only trying to sweat a bumblebee that had begun to attack the allergic Earl taking advantage of the racially charged incident Earl insists he was indeed beat up leading to Hank's revoked police badge and a six-month jail sentence once Hank is released he promptly gets a job as a security guard in hopes of getting his life straightened out what he doesn't realize is that Earl has also gotten a job from the same employer when a smuggling ring secretly working in the area is detected Earl and Hank become unlikely Partners in trying to catch the criminals this premise while worn out and mostly uninteresting would have been all well and good on its own instead the screenwriting team who brought the unsuspecting public 2002's I Spy Jay Garrick and David Ron with generous help from Martin Lawrence's adling have joined forces to make a sickening 90-minute diet tribe against white people Lawrence 2000's Big Mama's House can be funny under the right circumstances but here he is merely offensive with nearly every line he utters exposing his narrow-minded racism making a statement about race relations can be smartly used as the source of Comedy 2002's Undercover Brother being a prime recent example but there is no point behind it and no statement to be made here Earl is such a crass mean-spirited lying idiot that it comes as laughable that the viewer is supposed to root for him tellingly as he hung from a Seaside cliff in the climax the only thing running through my mind was that the world would be better off if he fell to his death I doubt this was the intention of the filmmakers but their carelessness in bringing this morally repugnant character to the screen has managed just that the only actor who escaped with most of their dignity is Steve zon 2001's Joy Ride as the put upon Hank while zon has been offered nothing witty to say in the screenplay he still has created a sympathetic character we as the viewers feel sorry for him when he unjustly loses his job and girlfriend and then feel even more sorry for him when he is forced to put up with Earl who is the apathetic source of his problems National Security isn't just a poor man's version of 48 hours or Rush hour but an unbearable experience that fails to generate a single solid laugh throughout the sporadic action set pieces are more tolerable but strictly of the bin there done that variety more than anything though National Security is repulsive in its misguided double standards had the roles been reversed and the white Hank been the racist one you can bet people would Riot the theaters since it is the African-American Earl however who has something against Caucasians it is widely accepted as just a silly comedy National Security is one big hypocritical to everyone at this particular moment in American history it might seem a dubious proposition to release of all things a film comedy with the title National Security but you at least have to admit that January 2003 should prove a less sensitive time than November 2001 the month that National Security was originally slated for debut although slotted into Colombia's schedule a few more times during the last 15 months the prevailing wisdom finally settled on the doldrums of January as the proper time to unleash this dog that may be all you need to know about National Security apart from this one additional factoid with this film the first he made after Black Knight Martin Lawrence reportedly joined the $20 million Club the elite ranks of Hollywood's top paid actors in National Security Lawrence delivers his non-stop mugging and Zan provides decent foil as LA's reluctant partner in Crim stopping but the film nevertheless Falls flatter than well a Hollywood Comedy release in January it's directed by Dennis Dugan with all the flare he failed to display in such previous Ventures as Happy Gilmore Big Daddy and Saving Silverman and it was scripted by Jay Garrick and David Ron the same writing team who previously gave us the witless comedies serving Sarah and I spy Lawrence plays a security guard who works for a company named National Security he had wanted to be a cop but was kicked out of Cadet training due to his inability to control his wacky impulses and his constant verbal trashing of white people whom he half jokingly points to as the cause of all mishap and ruin in the world at the start of the movie he accuses the cop played by Zan of a racially motivated assault with a night stick when a passer by's videotape of the incident appears to provide incriminating evidence then faster than you can say Rodney King Zan is put on trial s SED by an all black jury to 6 months in prison serves his time and is released of course he now also becomes a security guard but uses his time to track down the baddies who killed his former partner the briefly seen busfield things inevitably lead to the warehouse Lawrence is ineptly guarding and wouldn't you know it these two have to work together to set things right their prickly banter continues throughout the movie as scads of unbelievable events occur and a fairly incomprehensible smuggling plot headed by a blonde Eric Roberts is revealed in the final analysis though the only real thing being smuggled in National Security is unwitting patrons admission fees National Security is a 2003 American buddy cop action comedy film directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Martin Lawrence and Steve Zan The Supporting Cast includes Bill Duke Eric Roberts col Fury and Matt McCoy it was shot at various locations in Greater Los Angeles including Long Beach and Santa Clarita the film was released on January 17th 2003 received negative reviews from critics and grossed over $54 million worldwide at the box office movie plot as LAPD policeman Hank raffy and Charlie Reid investigate a warehouse Heist by a gang of Thieves Charlie is killed before they escape meanwhile Earl Montgomery's lifelong dream to become a police officer is thwarted when he flunks Police Academy for accidentally causing an explosion frustrated that detective Frank McDuff won't allow Hank to Aid in the investigation of Charlie's death he sees Earl trying to get into his car after locking his keys inside when Hank questions him Earl race baits and insults him until he tries to arrest him a bumblebee comes along to which Earl is allergic causing him to panic from afar it seems that Hank is brutalizing Earl when he is actually Shing the be away with his baton a man catches the incident on video in which a spiteful Earl lies about Hank is fired from the police force and sentenced to 6 months in prison for assault after his release Hank takes a job as a security guard and continues investigating Charlie's death noticing an alarm being tripped at a soda Warehouse Hank goes to investigate Earl who works for the same security company is on duty at the warehouse but is distracted Hank interrupts The Heist and a gunfight erupts dur during which Hank and Earl cross paths again they give Chase but are stopped for speeding one of the thieves drops a cell phone which leads them to a semi-trailer truck inside it Hank and Earl find the thieves van Earl tries to hotwire the van but accidentally triggers the alarm alerting the thieves after a brief shootout Hank and Earl Escape by driving the van out of the truck and off the edge of the Vincent Thomas Bridge the van contains seemingly ordinary beer cakes however at a they discover they are actually made of an atomic Aerospace alloy worth millions they hide the van and the kegs in Hank's ex-girlfriend Denis as they broke up when Hank was convicted Hank asks Earl to tell Denise the truth about the salt Earl promises but when he sees she is an attractive black woman he instead hits on her playing the victim again this causes another fight between them and Denise kicks them both out after a heated argument Hank punches Earl in the face before storm off later the pair is cornered by police as they are suspects in the earlier shootout they escape as Earl manages to punch Hank back in retaliation and Hank realizes the thieves must have a mole in the police department that night the pair trace the van's owner's address and stake it out but Earl rushes inside on his own and is confronted by the thieves Hank arrives just as Earl is shot in the leg and before they escape he recognizes one of the thieves Nash as Charlie murderer when Hank takes Earl to Denise to get his wound treated which is just a graze a be flies in and Earl freaks out making Denise realized that Hank's story about The Assault on Earl was actually true she slaps Earl for lying and reconciles with Hank based on something overheard from Nash they follow him to a meeting at a yacht club and witness him talking to McDuff his Inside Man Hank and Earl tell Hank's former boss Lieutenant Washington everything they know and then pretend to approach McDuff offering to sell him back the beer kegs for $1 million however Nash learns about their plans and takes Washington hostage first during the confrontation the next day the pair meet with McDuff Nash and their men near the coast Hank and Earl rescue Washington but accidentally start yet another gunfight with Nash's gang the trio managed to apprehend or kill most of the thugs including McDuff Hank is shot but survives and kills Nash by catapulting him into the ocean with a Crane's lifting hook finally avenging Charlie's death 6 months later in honor of their heroic actions Hank is reinstated in the LAPD while Earl is admitted to the force now officially Partners they encounter a situation similar to how they met in which a man is apparently locked out of his car Earl helps him but discovers he is actually a thief he successfully stops him by shooting at the car but the vehicle explodes soon after Martin Lawrence as Earl Montgomery Steve Z as Hank raffy colem Fury as detective Frank McDuff Bill Duke as Lieutenant Washington Eric Roberts as Nash Timothy busfield as Charlie Reid Robin Lee as Denise Matt McCoy as district attorney Robert Barton Brett Cullen as hon Mari Morrow as Lola Steven talowsky as Billy NX Margaret Travolta as judge Noel gugliemi as Latino reviews with an average rating of 3.5/10 the s's critics consensus reads the action in National Security is Mindless while the humor says nothing insightful about racial issues on Metacritic the film has a weighted average score of 34 out of 100 based on 25 critics indicating generally unfavorable reviews audiences surveyed by Cinema score gave the film an average grade of B+ on scale of A+ to F Joe Laden of variety wrote that despite some tasty contributions from Lawrence and Zan too much of national security has the Bland flavor of microwaved leftovers a o Scott of the New York Times said Steve Z in a film that's both laugh out loud funny and surprisingly subtle National Security movie review in National Security Martin Lawrence is Earl Montgomery a police academy reject with comedic violent tendencies and the stereotypical black mans me against the man angst after getting kicked out of the LAPD Academy because of some hilarious overe eagerness and Rebellion Earl joins the National Security Agency as a warehouse security guard Steve zon is Hank raferty a moral by the book LAPD officer who wants nothing more than to catch the bad guys who killed his partner after Earl gets Steve ousted from the force on a trumped up racial profiling charge the two are unwillingly thrown together as security guards for for National Security chasing a dangerous smuggling team led by a bleached Eric Roberts after Martin Lawrence's recent string of floppy slapstick silliness my expectations weren't too high but I must admit the first 20 minutes of the comedy SL action pleasantly drew some Chuckles after a long hard day unfortunately the filmgoing experience went downhill from there with the white man versus black man jokes quickly growing old and the plot weighed down with random shootouts and blowups I was really trying my best best not to be a complete hater but using the race card as the foundation for repetitive jokes was not really my thing Steve zon is actually very funny and great at not overplaying his role especially compared to Lawrence who got to be a bit overzealous with the silly action Factor it was cool to see Bill Duke make an appearance as a LAPD police captain and join in on the fun although the whole production seems to be the same joke told a thousand different ways the film is good for a couple of heiw at the very least Martin Lawrence rants endlessly against the white man and Steve zon tries to endure him in the obnoxious Odd Couple action comedy National Security Colombia directed by Dennis Dugan when Earl Montgomery Lawrence and Hank Rafford ton first meet neither is in a good mood Hank is a cop whose partner was recently killed investigating a warehouse break-in while Earl has just been thrown out of the police academy program after recklessly destroying a police cruiser and displaying nothing but insolence toward Authority when Hank comes across Earl struggling to reach his car keys through a partially closed window his initial response to this potentially suspicious scene is brusk but professional Earl however is immediately abusive and defiant escalating the situation to a minor struggle unfortunately as videotaped by a passerby the confrontation looks suspiciously like police brutality especially when a be bumbles into the scene leading the highly allergic ear to drop thrashing onto the ground while Hank wildly swings his billy club at the bee and tries to stomp it to death at the trial Earl falsely testifies against Hank playing the victim to the sympathetic all black jury while Earl's persecution complex paranoia is so profound that he may actually believe that he was the victim of excessive force he unambiguously perjures himself regarding the role of the bee in order to shaft Hank although previously Earl had told police about the bee Hank is somehow unable able to establish the basic facts in court found guilty Hank is sentenced to 6 months in prison where he must assault guards and incur solitary confinement simply to survive the Wrath of the black prisoners 6 months later back on the street he takes a job as a security guard while working on his own to find his partner's killer his efforts lead him to another Warehouse theft where he is stunned to run across Earl also working as a security guard the bad guys flee leading to a high speed chase that ends with both Hank and Earl in police custody maddeningly despite the fact that the interrogating officer a black lieutenant Bill Duke who is one of Hank's former colleagues personally heard Earl's original admission about the bee and knows how unreliable he is Hank is treated as a liar and a criminal who is stalking Earl while Earl is again treated as a victim Earl meanwhile is tickled by the notion of again falsely testifying against Hank and sending him back to prison but relents after extorting an apology from Hank for the original beating never in the whole movie does Earl apologize to Hank for any of this or undo any of the damage he has done in Hank's life Earl never even acknowledges that he lied at Hank's trial he consistently maintains his delusional conviction that he really was beaten nor does he get any comeuppance for his behavior instead the movie Winks at his outrageousness and rewards his brashness for example the film demean its entire female contingent by having every single woman respond to Earl's dubious charms over time Earl does come to sympathize with Hank especially when he realizes that Hank's conviction cost him not only his job and his freedom but his girlfriend as well yet even then instead of apologizing Earl says sympathetically you know what you are Hank you're a black man one of Earl's lowest moments comes after offering to help Hank win back his ex-girlfriend by backing up Hank's contention that there was no beating though to Hank Earl maintains that this will really be in lie when the moment actually comes Earl riges upon discovering that Hank's ex-girlfriend is a beautiful black woman his Unapologetic explanation he's against interracial romance that is when it's the man who is white besides the film's other problems there are huge plot holes such as how the protagonists who are wanted by police get a van loaded with stolen goods off a garbage scow without being caught and the day Numa is unnecessarily extended by an overlong shootout action sequence culminating in an unabashed revenge- driven climax Earl's endless racist Rants and insolence toward Authority being played for Laughs are generally more tasteless than offensive especially since he himself admits in one scene that even he doesn't necessarily believe everything he says Yet the movie plainly expects the audience to enjoy the prospect of a beleaguered white man suffering at the hands of a smug self-righteous black man who never owns up to what he's done never gets his comeuppance and is rewarded in the end with a batch to top it off any potential sympathy for innocent white men or cops getting a raw deal is offset by introducing a corrupt white police Lieutenant as the villain other information about this film National Securities paper thin plot utility shootouts and assorted car chases would not have amounted to much of anything if it hadn't been for the effective chemistry and a candid new look at race relations brought to to the surface by this Odd Couple of law enforcement which race aside turn out to have a lot more in common than they expected The Story begins with a couple of Los Angeles police officers responding to a report of possible suspicious activity in a warehouse and running smack into the middle of an elaborate Hightech heist in the ensuing shootout one of the officers gets killed and his partner Hank played by Steve Z feeling partially responsible vows not to rest until he finds the Killer a few days later Earl Montgomery Martin Lawrence an African-American Police Academy trainee finds himself booted from the academy for wearing his race a little too loudly on his sleeve and humiliating his instructor in the process while wrecking one of the Academy's training cars compounding his troubles Earl locks himself out of his car Hank who happens to be passing by on routine Patrol approaches Earl as he tries to break into his car a heated war of words ensues between the two Two Men and promptly escalates when Earl accuses Hank of racism just as Hank is about to arrest him a bumblebee starts to buzz around the two men Earl is highly allergic to bees and freaks out Hank wildly swings his Batten at the bee and tries to stomp it with his feet but a bystander records his actions with a home video the camera lens is partially blocked by Earl's car however the resulting footage erroneously depicts Hank's attempts to keep the Bumblebee from stinging Earl as the action of a white policeman beating an innocent black motorist Hank is found guilty by an all black jury and loses his job with the police department even going to jail for a short time Hank also loses his black girlfriend played by Robin Lee eventually both Hank and Earl wind up working for the same Security Agency against their most fervent desires they find themselves linked together as reluctant Partners chasing a vicious band of Smugglers while the entire LA Police Department chases them National Security does not have very much to endorse it is Laden with obscenities vulgarities gratuitous action violence and some partial nudity the plot is unimaginative and totally generic on the other hand this movie takes a surprisingly sharp and honest look at racial Politics as they exist in America today especially in the area of law enforcement and the t issue of profiling Martin Lawrence plays an insufferable loudmouth hiding behind his race for his own selfish purposes but he manages to present this controversial subject in a light-hearted and occasionally truly funny way using this skillful device Martin Lawrence makes it much easier to raise some serious questions about racism without offending anyone while working with a fragile vehicle at the same time this is a feat not to be quickly dismissed Steve zon equally plays a strong role as the boring but honest and definitely non-racist White cop the rest of the cast col Fury Eric Roberts Bill Duke and roin Lee also do a credible job but not much more obviously I have seen many a movie over the years but it's a rare one that I find too unbearable to sit through to the very end no matter how bad it may be after about 40 minutes of Martin Lawrence's colossal stinker National Security I could take no more offending my every sensibility I just could not take any more horrendously bad bad humor and noise pollution and what's worse is how Cavalier it is in playing the race car to try to get laughs now I've sat through many comedies which didn't make me laugh before too but this one is different it actually made me angry this is a level of anger at not just how bad it is but how careless it is in using a legitimately real issue the lack of respect between the Los Angeles police and the African-American community at patrols and using it as a platform for ugly racist remarks and F string stereotypes what's worse is that this film only serves to exacerbate the problem rather than bring levity because it clearly displays a loud and obnoxious black man speaking broken English and offensive slang making up a phony story of police brutality simply as an excuse for his idiotic Reckless Behavior this undermines a legitimate problem on abuse of authority among police officers and even if it stars Martin Lawrence Black Knight Big Mama's House the message delivered is is that the African-American Community are a bunch of lying whiners that will do anything to antagonize police into violence so they can point out how racist it is in a film full of so many incredibly bad elements the fact that they were able to cast an African-American willing to make a mockery of the legitimate pleas of actual victims of racist police brutality is beyond comprehension especially a comedian held in such high regard the film starts off with Earl Lawrence in the local police academy trying to become a police officer but being so antagonistic and Reckless as to get himself kicked out on the spot on the way out he realizes he had locked his keys in his car and while trying to fetch them out a passing patrol car driven by Hank Zan Joy Ride spots him and questions his intent Earl immediately claims that Hank is a Nazi and racist Pig for thinking he might be trying to steal a car and his insults eventually lead Hank to try to make an arrest while undergoing arrest Earl spots a large B floating around which he is allergic to leaving Hank to try to sweat the be away an eyewitness to the events thinks Hank is beating Earl when he sees the Baton flailing around so he videotapes it and to all appearances Hank is employing police brutality although wanting to be one Earl hates cops so much that he is willing to let Hank go to jail for the incident upon his release Hank can only find work as a security guard for a company called National Security which employs Earl as well although though the two hate each other they are forced to work together in taking down a crime ring which may have been responsible for the death of Hank's partner even without the offensive subject matter National Security is a terrible film possibly the worst in Lawrence's not too impressive career not all of the blame can be linked to Lawrence especially when you look at the filmographies of the creative forces behind IT director Dennis Dugan's most recent efforts include the sophomoric comedies Saving Silverman and big de screenwriters Jay Garrick and David Ron's claims to scripting Fame are working on I spy and serving Sarah two films not known for sparkling dialogue with such a dir of talent it's probably no surprise that this project was DOA from inception National Security is not recommended for anyone save Martin Lawrence's most unwavering of fans it's as grading on one's nerves and intelligence as any film in recent years and if anything I wish it would kill the career Lawrence once and for all of course I won't get my wish with the kind of crap Lawrence's fans have sat through already one would gather the threshold for entertainment is sufficiently low enough that he can keep spoon feeding them rotting sewage like this while they only gulp it down readily smile and ask for more more details thrown into prison on false harassment charges LAPD cop Hank zon loses his badge his girl and his partner in a matter of days but as fate would have it he and his accuser Earl Lawrence team up 6 months later to investigate a smuggling operation it's not that National Security makes a mess of mixing its action shootouts and comedy routines it's not even that the Buddy pairing is fatally mismatched with Zan showing more talent in a single hair of his mustache than Lawrence does in his entire body no this is a two-star movie dragged down a star because of its unrepentant racism at one point Earl says he doesn't condone own interracial relationships Hank's ex is black later he chats up a white chick when challenged he revises his opinion he doesn't condone interracial relationships when the man is white they expect you to laugh at the having the afternoon free I decided to catch a movie preferably one that would provide adequate fodder for an especially ruthless review the noon hour is rarely a time for a thinking man's picture so I deliberately chose something mindless and if I was lucky humorous in a guilty pleasure sort of way I decided to foro a guy thing perhaps another time and selected National Security the latest in a long long line of action-oriented buddy cop films starring Martin Lawrence's Earl and Steve on as Hank National Security is just that sort of film that keeps me up nights far too harmless to get upset about yet so benign and boring that it becomes as difficult to work up a sufficient rage for its incompetence I sat stupified that this screenplay was approved by anyone in the chain of command because it is no exaggeration to say that not one second of the film contains an ounce of originality it might have worked as a tongue-in cheek spoof of such films even that genre is tired but at least there would have been some level of self-awareness but instead the filmmakers are playing it straight they want to believe that we haven't seen this crap thousands of times before Earl is a loose cannon who is thrown out of the police academy for his bad temper and even worse attitude Hank is a brooding cop in the LAPD who watches his partner get killed and then vows revenge in the days following his partner's death he finds Earl with his hand through the window of a car and assumes he is stealing the vehicle Earl pulls an attitude accuses Hank of being a racist in the first of at least 300 racial jokes none of which weren't covered in Beverly Hills Cop and the two scuffle a bumblebee flies into Earl's face Hank tries to sweat it away and a man in a nearby park videotapes the entire episode which of course looks like another Rodney King type beating it continues Hank is convicted of battery sentenced to 6 months in jail and upon release is forced to get a job as a security guard he continues to pursue the killers of his partner and in the process interrupts a robbery at the very location where Earl also works as a security guard in order not to bore you further the two team up continue to bicker and expose a vast criminal conspiracy involving dirty cops a stolen Atomic alloy worth millions of dollars that has been melted down into beer kegs for Easy Transport and a criminal mastermind played by Eric Roberts with a blond die job needless to say the two former enemies are given new posts in the LAPD and the film ends as they fight crime together on the streets of Los Angeles there I just saved you eight bucks now log off the computer and do something else with your time do I really need need to tell you that characters run across the screen in slow motion as they fire their machine guns do I need to reveal that as one of the characters is facing certain death at the hands of the villain the other comes to the rescue at the very last moment or what about the character that is shot and screams and cries and talks about dying and is later told that the wound is only a scratch and of course need it be mentioned that Martin Lawrence is playing yet another character that obsesses about race and recycles jokes that might have been deemed seemed risky in the Ford Administration how about the uptight white man partnered with the crazy black man ticking them off one by one the cliches pile up like the blood clots in my tortured Brain still I wasn't angry this film does not reveal anything about the American people nor is it a sign of anything wrong with the state of the culture it merely occupies A Space in Time and will be instantly forgotten by all who view its contents either excite me with cinematic brilliance or infuriate me with true Soul crushing horror to go through to the Motions to this extent merely sends me walking from the theater no worse than when I arrived shrugging my shoulders with an expression that will be gone by the time I start my car still I do have something to say about my fellow patrons picture this I am alone in the theater with only a few minutes until Showtime because it is one of life's true Pleasures to see an afternoon film without anyone else around truly alone I smiled in anticipation of my private exclusive screening to come before my grin subsides I watch a family of five one mother for young kids walk in and in an empty theater plops her Brew down right in front of me hundreds of other seats available and the dumb decides to subject me to her horrible wretched family I am simply too stunned to move I could sooner understand the mind of God before I could penetrate the thought process behind such act I realized of course that I was not in a screening of the latest Merchant / Ivory film so one must lower expectations right then at least 15 other people tumbled in making it to their seats just as the previews began without exception they were all young boys ready to watch the expected Gunplay titty action and jokes while I did hear a peep now and then from the brats in front of me the rest of the crowd was strangely eerily quiet no one it seems was having a very good time it all made sense to me perhaps these young men like so many other Americans do not go to the movies for any reason whatsoever least of all to be entertained the movie house is a place to kill a few hours beach scened by fellow young people and have something anything to talk about the next day at school it is where people desperately search for that illusive common experience or perhaps not I don't know I just need a nap and a little something to dull the pain extra information National Security is living proof why January is often called a movie graveyard the month where a Studio's weakest movies are unceremoniously dumped for a lack of either commercial viability or quality directed by Dennis Dugan 2001's Saving Silverman National Security May at first glance look like nothing more than another harmless formula buddy action comedy but it isn't within the first 10 minutes it becomes readily apparent that it has a ntoo subtle racist agenda that is Thoroughly unfunny and repellent first the Disposable plot Hank Steve zon is a cop mourning the untimely death of his partner who was shot in the line of duty Earl Martin Lawrence is a wouldbe LAPD recruit kicked off the training program because of his antisocial behavior when Hank mistakenly thinks that Earl is trying to break into a car and threatens to arrest him a scuffle ensues unfortunately from the bad angle that the incident was caught on camera it looks as if Hank was beating Earl up when in actuality he was only trying to swat a bumblebee that had begun to attack the allergic Earl taking advantage of the racially charged incident Earl insists he was indeed beat up leading to Hank's revoked police badge and a six-month jail sentence once Hank is released he promptly gets a job as a security guard in hopes of getting his life straightened out what he doesn't realize is that Earl has also also gotten a job from the same employer when a smuggling ring secretly working in the area is detected Earl and Hank become unlikely Partners in trying to catch the criminals this premise while worn out and mostly uninteresting would have been all well and good on its own instead the screenwriting team who brought the unsuspecting public 2002's I spy Jay Garrick and David Ron with generous help from Martin Lawrence's adling have joined forces to make a sickening 90-minute diet tribe
