be earth's best employer amazon is a fantastic place to either begin or continue your career in product management we appreciate the time and effort you've put in so far interviewing at amazon may be different than interviews you've done before this video in addition to other prep material you've received will help set you up for success [Music] it is important that you spend time preparing for the interview you will likely be asked to provide significant details about past projects as well as your approach to hypothetical situations think deeply not only about what you did but how and why you did it that way think out loud the interview would like to understand your thought process and assess how you make decisions and trade-offs you should be ready to talk about results you achieved and the lessons you learned along the way be sure to ask clarifying questions if needed do not rely on assumptions try to understand and think about the problem before you jump into a story or example it's okay to ask your interviewer for a minute to structure your thoughts before you answer the question you may even want to have your own notes available especially for specific data and metrics relevant to your examples but we don't want you reading from a script now let's get into the specific functional and technical aspects of the role and how to prepare as a product manager you'll be expected to own a product from ideation all the way to launch this includes defining and tracking kpis engaging with stakeholders and developing an implementation or go to market plan be prepared to share complex and detailed examples of the products you've owned we want to hear about how you work backwards from the customer to create a product vision gather business requirements and build a product roadmap we will also dive into how you determine product and feature prioritization and influence tech teams and leaders to ensure the design is scalable and meets the needs of the customer and business the interviewer will also be assessing the scope scale and complexity of your examples and your ability to deal with ambiguous problems and situations specifically your interviewer will want to understand the ultimate problem you are trying to solve for the customer and how you advocated for them what considerations did you make in the trade-off decisions what data did you collect what analysis did you perform to confirm your assumptions and drive your decision making in addition to examples from your own experience the interviewer may also give a hypothetical but plausible business question and look to you to think logically through the problem start by asking clarifying questions to establish context so that you can clearly articulate the problem once you feel you have enough information start suggesting potential solutions and the pros and cons of each this is not meant to be a trick question the interviewer is more interested in your thought process and how you approach the problem than whether or not the answer is right [Music] at least one of your interviewers will dive into technical depth i highly recommend watching the system design video included in your prep material although tpms and sdms require deeper technical knowledge than a pmt the interviewer approach to collecting data points on your technical skills will be similar tpms and sdms will own the design and execution however you'll be expected to participate in technical discussions and influence the design product managers are not expected to code however you will need to demonstrate an understanding of system design architecture and knowledge of technologies in your domain this includes the ability to identify when a technical design is complex when it limits performance and its scalability as amazon is a global company we often build global products think big when considering a design's ability to innovate in the future interviewers may explore specific examples from your experience inquiring about your involvement in technical conversations your understanding of the system design its components limitations and scalability they'll seek to understand how you partnered with and influence tech teams and the overall architecture of the product like we talked about earlier you may also be asked an ambiguous hypothetical question to assess your technical depth again start by asking clarifying questions to get to the core of the problem you may start with questions such as who is the customer i'm designing this for what are key performance metrics i need to look at and once you have enough information share your thought process on designing a system what are the pros and cons of various technology options why would you choose a specific technology over another be sure to think about edge cases there are always surprises [Music] in order to be successful in this role you must demonstrate business acumen and experience working directly with technical and business stakeholders you need to have strong intuition a bias for action and be able to dive deep to use data to influence without authority be prepared to describe examples of when you've worked with multiple stakeholder groups potentially with competing priorities to earn trust and deliver results within tight timelines how did you communicate and set realistic expectations how did you resolve conflicts you should be able to explain technical topics to a non-technical audience as well as translate business requirements to a technical audience this is a great tip for the writing
