How can I teach myself ASL using video tutorials when some words use different signs even though it's the same word?
I am learning ASL one on one from my fiancée, the lovely Rebecca who also answered this question for you but I've decided to add my experience as a hearing person learning ASL. I have the vocabulary of a demented toddler, never overstate your mastery of the language if you do seriously pursue learning ASL, the Deaf do not appreciate this and find it offensive, you won't make friends if you claim fluency you don't have. No the alphabet and fingerspelling English is not fluency, it is annoying and to be avoided in most cases.I often get signs backwards or not quite right when first shown them and she corrects me and we practice them until I get them correct. If I was mimicking a video I would not get the instant correction and not realize I was doing the mirror image thing and continue to be backwards. Nothing beats in person instruction for a language that is beyond not English. ASL is a visual language that is both not oral nor written, it is about as not English as you can get so you really can't treat it like you would learning any other foreign language that you could get away with teaching yourself at least the basics of. As the other answers have stated you will only learn which signs are appropriate to use in what context and region (regional dialects are more a thing in the Deaf community than in the hearing community) if you take local classes, preferably taught by people in or connected to your local Deaf community. Not only will they teach you proper ASL but you can also meet people within your local community and learn about Deaf culture and have people to talk to because what is the point of learning ASL if you have no one to talk to?

Does someone who was born with a hearing loss "hear" an inner voice?
I believe I am well qualified to answer this question. I was born Deaf and have been Deaf my whole life. I do not wear hearing aids or cochlear implants (and have no desire to wear either). I speak American sign language (ASL) and it is my primary language. I am a mother of two born-Deaf children, so our being Deaf is genetic for us.I have a 'voice' in my head, but it is not sound-based. I am a visual being, so in my head, I either see ASL signs, or pictures, or sometimes printed words.I process information through my brain, my eyes, my nose, my tongue, and my touch, all in the same way anyone would process their information. I just don't use my ears to collect or process information, as it does not make any sense for me. Sound doesn't have the same importance or emotional meaning for me, as compared to what it means for people who hear.

What are some unspoken rules in the U.K.?
if someone says “you must come over for tea/coffee sometime”. Confirm that you’d love to and say “yes you must come over too”, under no circumstances must you go over for tea/coffee.Always hold a door open for someone. If they don’t thank you, mumble “you’re very welcome”, under you breath.Always thank bus driversIf you are offered the last biscuit never ever take it, even if the offferer insists. The person offering the biscuit wants it.Only the British are allowed to complain about our weather.A single nod of the head is an acceptable form of saying hello. If male always talk to the husband more than the wife and vice versa. If you’re going to offer tea - always declare how bad you are at making tea, regardless of you level of expertise.Never ever offer tea unless you are an expert at making it to British Standard 734*This only relates to business people in London City - “No brown in town” don’t wear brown shoes. This one has caught out my Greek and Italian friends, when eating at peoples houses. If offered seconds take it, if you’re still hungry, as it won’t be offered again. Unlike in most Greek and Italian homes, where seconds are offered and rejected, ad infinitum until the host absolutely insists and you eat more. This can go on to fourth and fifth offerings. But generally not in the UK!*BS734 was meant as a joke - the numbers 734 look a bit like TEA - evidently according to the comments there is aBritish Standard for making tea! Yes we are that anally retentive!!

How can I teach myself ASL?
The best way to learn American Sign Language is to break down learning certain subjects (example: 1 week will be all animal signs, the next all signs for family). I've attached this picture to (hopefully) help you learn!I also found this website, it's more to help teachers teach sign language, but it has very good resources: ASL - American Sign LanguageIt is also very helpful to watch videos on YouTube, some great Youtubers I have found are Paul and Tina Sirimarco (Tina is an ASL interpreter), Bill Vicars (he has different levels, like ASL 1, 2, 3 and 4, his videos don't have sound but if you turn on Closed Captioning it really helps when you're learning), Rochelle Barlow has great videos relating to seasons and her “Learn ASL in 31 days” series is great. One great hearing signer on Youtube is a channel called “thedailysign”, she signs everything she says in more of a PSE version (signing every word in English) but her educational videos are a very good resource, and she has ASL music videos. You could also buy an ASL Dictionary or workbooks on Amazon to help learn signs. If I can give you some tips, you don't need to sign words like is, a, an, the, to. Only words like then, and, with, but, or (which is fingerspelled) matter when you sign. Also, any question you ask another person, you end the question with who, what when, where, why or how (example: what's your name would literally translate to “your name what?” in ASL).I wish you luck learning Sign Language! I hope my answer was helpful for you!

Translators: Is it better to use native speaker of the source language or that of the target language?
Target language. Always. Translating into a language requires more skill than writing original text in that language. You should never use someone who does not have native level skills (a true bilingual is OK; we are talking about living several decades, preferably growing up, in the target language’s country). If you read a few of my replies here at Quora, you will see that my English is excellent—it’s my job, after all—but I still make mistakes that no native speaker would ever make. And I have translated into English professionally exactly three times; all three were under exceptional circumstances. The first one was a caretaker at a large building complex who, on the evening of December 23rd, needed a sign in English for his elevator saying it was out of order. There were a lot of foreign visitors and he wanted to give them a sporting chance of understanding. I just wrote “OUT OF ORDER” in an email and didn’t charge him for it.The second one was the Swedish sales office of Toyota, who wanted some newspaper articles translated with same day delivery, just so that they could show the big brass from Japan what Swedish newspapers were writing about Toyota. I explained that the notice was so short that the only way would be if I did it myself, and I was not a native speaker. They said it was OK; the intended target audience was two Japanese gentlemen who didn’t speak very good English anyway. Not intended for publication. The third one was a program for a fashion trade fair. It was written in a very… florid language. Or maybe I should rather say that the author might have been smoking something. I sent it to no less than two British translators, but they both complained that they couldn’t actually understand the source text, despite both of them speaking truly excellent Swedish. One compared it to the poem Jabberwocky. In the end, I had no other way out than to translate it myself; at least I could try to get into the author’s mind and try to understand the feeling behind the words, if not the actual semantic contents, such as it was. They were very pleased with the result, although as far as I know, not one native speaker of English ever saw that text—the visitors to the trade fair were mainly Scandinavians with a sprinkling of Germans.

How do I learn to say no?
Saying "no" unskillfully nearly cost me my life. I was trained to be firm and calm; to repeat "no" as many times as necessary until the boundary was made clear. "No," they said, "is a complete sentence." One of the things we teach, in my job with court-mandated clients, is discipline, and one of the ways we do this is by enforcing punctuality. On a summer afternoon, 15 minutes into a process group, a young stranger threw open the door and walked in. He was short, maybe 5' 1, and pale. His pants hung low on his hips and, looking back, he was too confident for someone wearing a plaid golf cap too big for his head. I asked him to step outside with me - as was company policy - to explain how to attend a make-up activity and send him on his way. I was half standing when he said, "No. I'm staying." He was physically in front of the closed door. "You can come back next week, but I can't allow you to attend today." "You will let me attend today." "No, I can not." After several long minutes of back and forth I finally said. "I can't allow you to attend, but I am not going to physically force you out the door. You will be getting no credit for today. You need to leave." I sat back down with the group. "What's a situation in your life when someone wouldn't take 'no' for an answer?" I asked. After five more minutes of being ignored he left, and the group continued. An hour later the group was over and I was standing outside my office talking to a client. One of the group members came running down the hall, eyes wide. "Diane! Don't go outside! He's waiting for you in the parking lot with a gun!" Long story short, he didn't shoot me or anyone else. By the time the authorities arrived he was gone. When we realized he wasn't in my paperwork and the clients who reported him melted away at the mention of the police I started shaking so much I had to sit down. The officer taking the report said, "People like this make a couple mortal enemies every day. Lay low for a bit and he'll quickly forget you in his rage at the checker in the grocery store." I found this equally distressing and comforting. I went to visit my godparents in the mountains. I refused the gun they offered when it was time to go home. I got and still keep big dogs at my house. For the next several months I scanned the faces of the hundreds of clients I passed in the halls at work. He showed up occasionally in my dreams, or his hat did at least, because in my memory I still can't see his face. One of my friends makes me laugh when he says the state motto of Arizona is "An armed society is a polite society." So, all this to say, here's how I've learned to say no: "I wish...but..." * "I wish I could let you into group late, but the state law says we can't." * "I wish I could include your ideas in my next workshop, but the curriculum is already worked out." * "I wish that I could lend you $100, but I am short this month." When things are intense I add "and" to the mix. * "I wish I could have you stay on my couch, but my home is my refuge and I need my quiet time." * "I wish I could just let you in this one time, but the law is really clear and I'd lose my job." If it gets emotional or extreme, I load on validation and send them somewhere for more help. * I know, it's awful. You came a long way and the bus was late, and if I could I would SO break the rules for you. Maybe you can head up to the front office and see about setting up a make up group right after group next week." "No," some people say, "is a complete sentence." It is; it's just not always the best sentence for the job. Image: Plaid Golf Cap Hat [ http://www.etsy.com/listing/79960122/plaid-golf-cap-hat ]

What was the most blatant scam a customer has ever failed to get away with?
When I was a broke college student in the early 1990s, I worked in a busy bookstore in a mall in downtown Boston. The register was located at the front of the store, on a raised platform, so we could monitor customers as they came and left. One day when I was working the register, I noticed a cute guy enter the store carrying a metal clipboard—the kind that had a compartment for storing a notebook or additional paperwork. After disappearing into the back of the store, the guy returned moments later and got in line. When it was his turn, he smiled at me, opened the clipboard’s compartment, and ...

What was the craziest thing that you've seen that no one believes?
My little brother is technically my step father ( if we go by common law). My biological mother was sexually abused by her grandfather and like many victims, she grew up into a sexual predator. Their incestuous relationship began when he was 14 and I was 16 or 17 ( am 36 now). During that time, I observed suspicions behavior between the two. Odd noises eminating from my brother's room, inappropriate body language and walked in on them hiding under a blanket, many times.I'll never know who made the call, but a social worker interviewed me at school once. I voiced my concerns as the line of questions asked of me was directly related to her, but nothing happened. It was the late 90′s, popular opinion was that all teens were mentally disturbed punks and white women happened to be the new “ oppressed minority" and could do no wrong. Perhaps this explains the lack of action.Fast forward several years and I'm now a parent and living a decent life. My brother and mother had a spat, at which point he signNowed out to me and explained that they've been physically intimate since he was 14. I immediately called my mother and lost my shit. She didn't deny the accusation and reacted by taking my brother on shopping sprees and allowed him to move in rent free. Prior to their patching things up, he gave a statement to the police with my encouragement. Post shopping spree, my brother refused to cooperate with the police and an investigator told me that they can't move forward without a “ willing victim". I am actually going to the station tomorrow to inquire about prosecuting her for bribing him with over 12k in cash gifts and free rent to boot. I understand that this in itself is a crime in many jurisdictions. As of now, they still reside together, my brother is in his 30′s and they don't try hard to hide the nature of the relationship. It's been difficult to cope with and I once came close to shooting myself in the head due to the shame factor. Thank you for reading. I obviously left many details out as I didn't want to write a thesis on the clock but will be happy to answer any questions. Thank you for reading. If you see something, say something!!Best,Josh

What does having a mental disorder feel like?
Its not fun, I can tell you that. And to me it feels like joke sometimes.People (specifically teenagers is what's going to be addressed) don't fully understand mental illness. Many of them say they have one, when in reality its just normal teenage feelings. So, ill try to make that clear. I don't know about all mental illnesses but the ones ive been clinically diagnosed with, I know a thing or two about them.DepressionDepression isnt feeling sad when your cat died. Or feeling down for a period of time when something tremendous happened in your life.No depression is waking up and the first thought that pops in your head is disappointment that your still alive. Or never wanting to do anything but breathe and barely that. You feel like shit every single day. And it never goes away. And get this, its for no reason whatsoever. And if I find out you're faking it, im going apeshit.AnxietyThis was my very first diagnosis. Anxiety isnt being nervous for a test, or scared to drive a car. No, you see for me anxiety is thinking you'll die every time you step out your front door. And not wanting people to look at you for fear your skin decided to peel off. I can't even send a picture of me without panicking that the person will call me horribly ugly to the point I have an actual full blown panic attack. The song “I don't care" by Ed Sheeran really irritates me, because he uses anxiety for profit. Saying “I hate everyone here" is something that might sound cool and “relatable” but its not. That's not how anxious people feel. Sure, I may have a meltdown looking at a group of people but its not simply because I dislike people. It's because of the hundreds of scenarios ive made up of things that could go wrong.AutismI would like to take this opportunity to say I don't have down syndrome okay.A modern day insult today is calling someone Autistic, which I have no problem with because it's funny to me being autistic and all. However it bothers me when people tell me “oh there isn't anything wrong with being autistic”………Bitch, what world are you living in?Something is medically wrong with my brain. Generally its to make me feel better but it feels like they are down playing it.Schizophrenia*takes deep breath*You telling yourself that you aren't good enough is not schizophrenia. You hearing “voices" when really its common random noises like outside or floors creaking.Auditory hallucinations are much more real than those examples. The scariest one ive had so far wasIm going to kill you by slitting your throat if you don't have sex with meAnd it was like someone was standing right behind me telling me this. Chances are its slim you have schizophrenia.Thata just SOME of what I have. You get the point.Unless you are diagnosed with such, than you shouldn't claim it. Its insulting.Peace.
