Welcome to this Department of Workforce Development video about the Wisconsin Unemployment Insurance work search requirements. The purpose of Unemployment Insurance is to provide temporary financial assistance until you are able to secure work. Until you do, there are eligibility requirements that must be met so you can receive unemployment benefits. In this video, we will focus on how to perform and document work search actions. If you are claiming unemployment from the State of Wisconsin, you must conduct reasonable work search actions for each week you request benefits -- unless the department clearly tells you that your work search is waived. If you do not perform the work search actions, your benefits will be denied. Let's start by talking about what is required. You are required to perform at least four reasonable work search actions per week. A reasonable work search action is an action designed to secure work. It is essential that you personally and diligently search for suitable work. What is suitable work? Suitable work is work that is reasonable considering your training, experience, and how long you've been unemployed. You must report your work search action in the week in which the action was completed. This means that you cannot complete 8 work search actions in one week, none for the next week, and report 4 in each of the weeks. To distinguish whether a work search action is reasonable, we consider each work search action to be either valid or invalid. If your work search action is invalid, it will not count toward your four work search actions for the week. Let's look at some examples of valid and invalid work search actions. Submitting a resume or application to an employer that has openings or is taking applications is a valid work search action. It is also the most direct way to obtain work. What would make submitting an application or resume an invalid work search action? If you apply for work you are clearly not qualified for. Also, if you apply for work you know you would not accept, the work is not suitable for you. It would not be a valid work search action if your application or cover letter contains incorrect information about how to contact you or contains wording designed to discourage the employer from contacting you. And if your application is for the same employer and same job you already applied for within the last four weeks, we would not consider it to be a valid work search action. Other valid work search actions include: Applying for a civil service position on wisc.jobs Registering with a placement facility, temporary help agency, or headhunter Meeting with a career counselor Participating in a professional work-related networking group or event, as long as the topics covered provide instruction for increasing your skill in searching for and obtaining work. If you are unsure whether one of the actions you performed was valid, your best course of action is to perform an additional work search action during the week that you know is valid. Now let's talk about invalid work search actions. Invalid work search actions include: Viewing job ads or postings, but not applying; Contacting an employer that has no openings and isn't accepting applications; and Repeat contact with a prospective employer, such as checking on the status of an application or scheduling an interview. You must provide your work search actions to the department either during the online weekly claim process or through the Weekly Work Search Entry Form, located in the Unemployment Insurance online portal. Later in this video, we will demonstrate how to enter your work search actions. What information should you document for each work search action? You must record enough detail that it can be verified. When you enter your work search action, the type of action you took and the method you used to contact any employers will determine the questions you are asked. A work search entry that contains incomplete information may be considered an invalid work search action. You must keep a record of your work search actions for each week you claim benefits. The department is required by law to randomly audit work search actions and may request evidence of your work search actions at any time. The department retains the work search actions you submit electronically. Keep your own records, to show the work search actions were completed, for 52 weeks. You may be required to send proof of the action, such as an emailed acknowledgment of an application or printout of your application history with an employment website. When you apply or post resumes online, you may not have the employer's phone number or address. For that reason, there is a good chance you will be asked to show us proof of your online work search actions. Here are some tips. When recruiting sites, JCW, or employers send you emails confirming receipt of your resume and applications, keep those emails. They are often the only way to show the date you performed that work search action. If you use online career tools like My Skills My Future, save a screenshot of the results of the tools used. And if you participate in a professional work-related networking event, keep your name badge, registration confirmation, and ticket showing the name and date of the event. Again, this proof helps us verify you attended. When you submit your claim, and this includes your work search records, you are certifying what you submit is true and accurate. It is extremely important you submit accurate and truthful information. If you submit fraudulent information, you will be required to repay any overpaid benefits. You will also be assessed penalties, lose future unemployment benefits, and may be subject to criminal prosecution. As we mentioned earlier, your work search actions can be entered during the current week. If you use this feature, when you file a weekly claim certification for the week, the work search information you entered during the week will automatically transfer into that claim. Here we will demonstrate how to enter your work search actions during the current week. Log on to my.unemployment.wisconsin.gov to access your dashboard. You can get to the "Weekly Work Search Entry Form" in 1 of 2 ways. Use the dropdown "Unemployment Services" menu at the top of the page and select "Enter Work Search Activity." Or Go to the bottom of the page and select "Enter Work Search Activity" here. Note, when you select this option, the dates shown will be those of the current week. On the first page of the Weekly Work Search Entry Form, read the information and acknowledge that you have read it. Click "continue." On the "Work Search Detail Page," first select the activity you completed. You'll be presented with a list of options. In this case, we applied directly through an employer's website, so I'm choosing, "Filled out application." Click "next." Here is where you enter the details for that work search action. You're then taken to the "Work Search Summary" which lists all of the work search actions you have reported for the week. From here, you can click "update" to change or update your answers or "remove" if you have made an entry in error. Click "Add Work Search" to add another work search action in the week.
