E-signing: Is typing your name on a form and clicking submit hold up as a legal signature?
In states which have passed it, the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) would govern this. Section 7 of UETA, in particular, specifies: SECTION 7. LEGAL RECOGNITION OF ELECTRONIC RECORDS, ELECTRONIC SIGNATURES, AND ELECTRONIC CONTRACTS. (a) A record or signature may not be denied legal effect or enforceability solely because it is in electronic form. (b) A contract may not be denied legal effect or enforceability solely because an electronic record was used in its formation. (c) If a law requires a record to be in writing, an electronic record satisfies the law. (d) If a law requires a signature, an electronic signature satisfies the law.So, assuming that a signature is required for a contract to be valid, an "electronic signature" suffices. UETA defines "electronic signature" as follows:(8) "Electronic signature" means an electronic sound, symbol, or process attached to or logically associated with a record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record. In basic language, this means that when you type out your name and click on the "submit" button, you've electronically signed the record, and the official comments to UETA (not technically law, but extremely persuasive) back this up:This definition includes as an electronic signature the standard webpage click through process. For example, when a person orders goods or services through a vendor's website, the person will be required to provide information as part of a process which will result in receipt of the goods or services. When the customer ultimately gets to the last step and clicks "I agree," the person has adopted the process and has done so with the intent to associate the person with the record of that process. The actual effect of the electronic signature will be determined from all the surrounding circumstances, however, the person adopted a process which the circumstances indicate s/he intended to have the effect of getting the goods/services and being bound to pay for them. The adoption of the process carried the intent to do a legally signNow act, the hallmark of a signature.Although not every state has adopted UETA either in part or in whole without modifications, I believe every state now has similar or identical provisions in its body of law. Assuming that this type of waiver would otherwise be legally enforceable (and many jurisdictions don't allow a waiver of liability for injuries under certain circumstances) then it would not be rendered unenforceable simply because it was signed electronically.Of course, in order to ensure the enforceability of any contract, one should generally consult with an attorney who is familiar with contract law in your jurisdiction and who could recommend a set of best practices for the storage and preservation of any contract stored as an electronic record.

Is there an industry standard e-signature software that insurance companies use for online life insurance sales?
Many insurance companies use signNow for their e-signature needs. It has the best online link/forms solution in the esign industry so that you can integrate new enrollments directly from your website. There's also a flexible API for integrations as well. If you want to send documents in bulk for esigning, like customer renewals, you can do that too. What is the difference between a digital signature and an electronic signature in your professional opinion?
Both terms - “electronic signature” and “digital signature” - are often used interchangeably, they aren’t exactly the same. Electronic signatures could be considered virtual representations of a pen-and-paper (“wet”) signatures. Digital signatures, also called cryptographic signatures, are a type of electronic signature that’s coded and encrypted in order to prevent the impersonation of a signee, tampering, and improve security overall. The main difference is that a digital signature is mainly used to secure documents and is authorized by certification authorities while an electronic signature (e-signature, e-sign) is usually associated with a contract where the signer has got the intention to do so: Difference Between Digital Signature and Electronic SignatureE-signature helps an individual to show his agreement to the conditions and terms of an electronic service. It can also be used to confirm the identity of the message's creator. Many countries give the same legal importance and significance to e-signatures as to traditional ways of executing documents. Here are the features of some most popular tools in this area: Best E-Signature Software Reviews & Comparisons | 2019 List of Expert's ChoicesWith electronic signature tools you avoid signing digital documents by hand - which is tedious cause otherwise you need to print, sign and scan all that stuff - that’s why such tools are on the rise. If you work with such signatures often, maybe you need some simple free tool which is specialized exactly for your business tasks. It really depends on the purpose for which you need this to sign an already typed document - it is often better to use a specialized tool, like Draw Your Signature Online and Sign PDF - CreateMySignature.com (instead of a regular image editor) to streamline your business documents workflow.

What are the benefits of electronic signature?
What is Digital Signature? And Benefits of Digital Signature CertificatesA digital signature is basically a way to ensure that an electronic document (e-mail, spreadsheet, text file, etc.) is authentic. Authentic means that you know who created the document and you know that it has not been altered in any way since that person created it.Digital signatures rely on certain types of encryption to ensure authentication. Encryption is the process of taking all the data that one computer is sending to another and encoding it into a form that only the other computer will be able to decode. Authen...

How would you encrypt your e-mail?
I've used two major schemes. PGP and S/MIME. PGP (Gnupg) is the classic method that worked with plain text mail and is still used by security professionals (signing abuse reports, security newsletters etc.). The message body is encrypted and converted to an ASCII format that can be inserted into a message. Many email clients have plugins of some kind that support PGP.S/MIME uses the same kind of PKI as SSL on the web, and is supported natively by Thunderbird etc.To send an encrypted message with PGP, I'd get the recipient's public key from a keyserver, or directly, from a colleague etc. T...

Is there an open source DRM toolkit for ebooks?
The short answer is no. While there are open source DRM options for video, none exist for e-books. One free option is password protecting through signNow or Preview for OSX, but password protection is easily removed by free online tools. Additionally, a PDF is far from an ideal way to consume an e-book. Not only are they PDFs not compatible with many e-readers, their layout and formatting options leave much to be desired. Fortunately, there are reasonably priced options for protecting your e-book. The highest level of DRM protection—industry-standard encryption from signNow—has traditionally come with very high setup and ongoing costs. Thanks to EditionGuard [ https://www.editionguard.com/?utm_source=quora&utm_medium=answer&utm_campaign=Q5.19 ], you have access to the same DRM protection used by giants like Barnes & Noble and Kobo for a flat monthly rate with no setup costs. Here is an overview of the three primary forms of DRM protection for e-books. Password Protection Using various apps, such as signNow or the native MacOS alternative, Preview, you can password-protect your PDFs and e-pubs. There is no flexibility in terms of what users can access - they either have the password to open the file or not. This can deter users, but the encryption is less than industry-standard and can easily be removed for free using various services and solutions. Watermarking or “Social DRM” Social DRM is implemented in various ways but typically involves imprinting your PDF or e-pub with a visible or invisible watermark containing the user’s personal information. This discourages sharing, as a file with your personal information attached to it means any copy of it is trackable and attributable to you. Industry-Standard DRM Protection DRM protection with secure encryption and the versatility to control what users can and cannot do with your PDFs and e-pubs is an investment. The security of these services relies on them constantly being one step ahead of the thousands of people attempting to decrypt their solutions for their motives, be they business or personal. What is the process of signing a PDF document?
Hey, there are couple of different ways to do this. 1. The most widespread one is actually print the pdf you have -%3E sign it manually -%3E scan it back into electronic version -%3E send it via email or any other way to the party requested the document with your signature. In 2017 this is still a very popular way to sign, according to a study we conducted during closed beta testing of signNow - our free esignature solution for Mac, iPhone/iPad, Android, Windows and web. More than 30% of 230+ SMB owners said this is the way they sign documents now. Though this way is at no-cost for you, at least if you have a printer and scanner / mobile app for scanning, there are major drawbacks for this solution like: * It takes too much time and efforts * It is very difficult and old fashioned * People can not sign or send documents for signing on the go * Response time and reliability * A need to follow-up and check if the document was received, viewed etc * Having to have printer and scanner * Papers get lost More answers on that are in this topic already https://www.quora.com/Have-you-considered-using-e-Signature-for-your-business 2. Using ready-made esignature apps like signNow [ https://www.keepsolid.com/sign/ ]. This kind of a solution allows: * to sign or send your contracts, agreements, invoices etc on your favorite devices, even on the go and sync everything in seconds * work with documents offline and access all your files remotely * use smart templates + status tracking + reminders: start from scratch creating your document from a template, track the status and remind involved parties to sign it * to secure your sensitive data with high-grade AES-256 encryptionTo enjoy clean&simple UI – according to our beta users Other great eSign solutions are gathered in this topic https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-best-way-to-sign-a-PDF-document or you can find different eSignature alternatives here [ https://alternativeto.net/software/keepsolid-sign/ ]. 3. Use Apple’s Preview app (the built-in default app for Mac to view pictureы, edit and also sign pdfs). 4. Pgp encryption. The approach here would be open the document in PDF app or in browser, paste your signature, encrypt with the pgp encryption tool like iGolder or built-in solutions for Mozilla, for example. Though, both of the last two methods still require you to send the final document via email, these are free alternative if you need to sign documents rarely or just don’t want to pay for a dedicated eSignature solution. Cheers!

What are the best electronic signature (e-signature) services?
Sometimes we really don’t understand what we mean under “best”, even this question doesn’t elaborate what the best service means? Which criteria the author believes the service fits the best? price?best design? Reliability?Let’s better talk about “suitable” for this moment and current needs. As the previous answers mentioned, do you need the service to be available on all major platforms or a signature that will stand up in court?Do you need a free simple solution, a feature-rich service that charges on the amount of signatures/documents signed or on monthly basis?Do you need to work with your documents on the go with low or no internet connection (while travelling, in the airport or plane)? And you can ask yourself with tons of such questions to create a matrix of features-service to choose the one you need. Or you can use 3rd party platforms like Alternativeto to initially select the provider you are interested in.When we conducted a closed beta testing for signNow recently, one of the goals was to understand the main criterias SMB owners from US use to choose a solution or switch to another one.We interviewed more than 230 businesses and what’s interesting, while the top factor goes to Security&data privacy, price or for example, digital signature availability is not in Top-3 of choices. Speed of an app/solution and multiplatform availability (works in web browser as well as on Mac, iPhone/iPad, Android and Windows devices) are what values higher. So, if there is a need to sign/send documents on Mac, iphone/ipad, android, windows and web browser and to work with documents offline, signNow is alternative to go with. We are still in beta, implementing some major requests from our beta users, but will be launching this September. And, signNow is free while in beta.

How can I protect my PDF book from being pirated?
Simple - don’t put your ebook (in this dreadful ebook format) on the web. I suspect that’s not the answer you want though so here’s another: Don’t bother worrying about this. The format you have chosen is designed for printing, not for reading on an ebook reader, most serious readers won’t bother with it because doing all that scrolling is irritating and PDF files can often contain malware. Those who pirate books will thank you though since you have made their task easier. A better format would be EPUB or for Amazon MOBI. Both of these can have DRM applied which prevents an average computer user sharing the file. However I suggest you DON’T add DRM since it won’t prevent those who pirate books from removing it. It will prevent most legitimate users from transferring the files between devices though. If your book is worth copying, there is nothing you can do to prevent it being pirated once it is available for sale on the web. Those who download your pirated books though probably wouldn’t have bought it anyway. If they like it, there’s a chance they may buy another of your books, post a review or talk about it to friends. Look on those pirate copies as free advertising.
