Why doesn't Gmail support digital signing?
HiClick here for Digital signature Certificatespent the better part of my day trying to get Thawte personal email digital signatures to work with GMail and Lotus Notes 8.5. Why does it need to be this hard?Yesterday I finally had a need to get a personal digital certificate and send somebody a digitally signed email message -- I'm working remotely on a project for one of my customers and I needed VPN access into their network. To get the necessary permissions and access, I had to send a digitally signed email to their head of IT security. The head of IT security directed me to Thawte's freemail certificate issuing authority web site, which generates certificates for several different web browsers and email clients that you can import and use to digitally sign your emails. I figured "ok, no problem".Click on the "Read the rest of this entry" link below for more. The actual certificate registration process itself is fairly simple. You sign up into Thawte's web site and fill out a bunch of personal information, and the site sends you an email with a link which it uses for delivery verification. After clicking on the link, you can then request a X.509 format public key certificate for "Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird/Netscape Communicator", "Internet Explorer/Outlook/Outlook Express", "Lotus Notes R5", "OperaSoftware Browser" or "C2Net SafePassage Web Proxy".

Where is cryptography typically used?
Cryptography makes secure web sites and electronic safe transmissions possible. For a web site to be secure all of the data transmitted between the computers where the data is kept and where it is received must be encrypted. Due to the large number of commercial transactions on the internet, cryptography is very key in ensuring the security of the transactions. Cryptography allows you to have confidence in your electronic transactions. Encryption is used in electronic transactions to protect data such as account numbers and transaction amounts, digital signatures replace handwritten signatures or credit card authorizations, and public-key encryption provides confidentiality. Key management is an important aspect in encryption that allows you to apply common encryption policies across all data on all managed devices. Cryptography is also used in access control to regulate access such as in satellite and cable TV. Without cryptography, hackers could get into our e-mail, eavesdrop on our phone conversations, tap into cable companies ,acquire free cable service, or break into our bank accounts. Time stamping is a cryptographic technique that can signNow that a certain electronic document, communication existed or was delivered at a particular time. In general, cryptography is an important way of achieving data confidentiality, data integrity, user authentication and non-repudiation.More information on cryptography is provided in the link belowUnderstand Cryptography

How do we use cryptography today?
Try and imagine every possible communication you have during a day:You talk on the phone. You send SMS texts. You send emails. You send WhatsApp/Viber messages. Now try and think how would you feel if someone could easily eavesdrop on these conversations. Pretty uneasing eh?Cryptography -among other things- tries to make sure that a message sent from you (your voice, your text, your email) can be understood only by the person that is intended to get that message.I won't get into the mathematics behind it, but generally your message -which is essentially a sequence of "0" and "1" in our digital world- is encrypted (using Symmetric-key algorithm) by some key (which is agreed by both parties, by some other mathematics called Public-key cryptography) and the other party uses the same key to decrypt your message.TL;DR Internet (emails, login information, e-banking), mobile phones, car keys, everywhere

What is a digital signature? How do you do a digital signature?
According to TechTarget, a digital signature is “...information that is attached to data to assure the recipients of the data that it has not been altered and has originated from the signer of the message. Digital signatures perform an equivalent function to a handwritten signature on a paper document. To create a digital signature, signing software -- such as an email program -- creates a one-way hash of the electronic data to be signed. The private key is then used to encrypt the hash. The encrypted hash -- along with other information, such as the hashing algorithm -- is the digital signature…”Digital signatures are secure, efficient and a great way to not just increase the productivity and reduce costs of your business, an e-signature application lets you monitor, assign and control the entire signing process. An application I recommend checking out is signNow. It works for a variety of businesses, startups and for individual use as well. One of the best things about this application is all the highly convenient features that it offers that put you in the driver’s seat when it comes to monitoring, assigning and checking on the signatures. This software is multi-platform, comes with several security features (2-factor authentication, SSO (single sign-on) and it’s encrypted with TLS/SSL, AES-256 and RSA-2048, and all documents have legally binding audit trails, so all the changes are tracked. With signNow, your documents are secure, monitored at all times during the entire duration of the process, and since it’s also multi-user, there are no limitations.Disclaimer: I am part of Kdan’s team, and my answers might be a bit biased.
