Ten year ago, I would have told you "if done well, SEO really could be a winner for you, and its good to invest in both". Today, PPC will trump SEO, as SEO is all about content that people share and actually want to read - that takes a lot of time and investment to do right. Most ecommerce platforms (the big first push was magento in this space) come pre-loaded with really well built structure for SEO. H1 tags are in the right place, URL's are short and to the point etc. Look at wordpress, its SEO heaven and its free.This was not the case many years back, and companies spent a lot of time and energy optimizing. Today, when you are sizable enough, investment into SEO is useful, but on site changes should be in content and speed. Two things that are favored.PPC is king. Google is in the business to make money and provide a great experience. It's a bit of a split. If your website is all about contributing to making the world/internet a better place, google will rank you and not bill you for it. Its part of what they do. If you are a marketer of branded products, google knows you are not providing anything that super special aside from the ability to buy and help a customer out.So they go to the PPC model there and make money on you. Basically, its pay to play these days. The last 10 years google has spent figuring out how to get those monetizing off free traffic and not offering value add to start paying. Look at the paid search results now. They look almost like organic ads. PLA is huge, and thats specifically to separate those selling vs. those having content. So everything is paid, why is that good? Because now you can grow faster by paying. SEO is a tough business where you hope for growth but its hard to measure. Its doable, but for most people, you can, in a dashboard, see how your PPC efforts are paying off on conversion. The more you pay, the more visible you are. The next part you want to do is make sure your highly paid for traffic converts. Use things like Rejoiner to make sure those who come on site are marketed if they abandon. Use optimizely to test your pages iteration and how people react to price, design etc. PPC gets them there, but its your job to keep people on site and take care of them to come back. With PPC, you can even retarget (google side) and pay more for those that have once visited your site as you know that their 2nd time back means they are more interested.The world of marketing has changed for the better imho.
