What was it like to serve in a battle tank in The Battle of Kursk?
Imagine, you're a Russian T-34 driver, your commander/gunner tells you to keep going no matter what or why. Before that, you slow down for your infantry pals to demount to take cover behind your tank's rear. Once you hear your top's excitement or fearful voice shouting: "Enemy tanks! Load fragmentation round! Ready armor piercing round in your hands!" while showing his loader open palm meaning HE then closed fist meaning AP. You hear your loader grunts as he loads the 1st round into the 76mm breech: "Ready!" Then holds an AP round on his lap. Your tank rocked but keeps rolling, you look through your slit and sees the leading Panzer’s left drive wheel flies off and trends goes with it. It looks strange and new, first time seeing that panzer, it looks big and has sloped armor on its front plus a long gun. At the same time, your loader sounds the breech is ready to be fired then immediately throws the empty shell out through his hatch to let shell gas not fill up turret, you can see the large red tracer round touches the Panther's front armor and bounces up into the air far away. It retaliates with a very fast round emiting green, your vehicle shakes and comes to stop. You hear screamings from the turret cage, you turn and look at your commander/gunner covering his head with bloody hands, then your loader who lost his legs then to your co-driver, best buddy for 2 years, upper torso isn't there. You see more light inside your tank. Then you feel hot and smell smokes, your tank engine is on fire! You try to unlock your heavy visor door, open it, you try to get out as soon as fast, drop to the ground. You hear lots of "clang-cling!" seeing small green tracers bouncing off your tank, trying to get you. You lie down, not knowing what to do. You look at another T-34, running over wounded soldiers, our own soldiers, not stopping, then its turret pops out of the hull, along with limbs of her crew throwing out of the hull while on fire. Other T-34 keeps rolling, some got destroyed. It’s like a field with fireplaces all over it. You feel ground shaking from co tinous artillery and mortar round impacts and loud clanking sounds from hundreds of T-34’s noisy tracks. You just saw your best friend's half of his body blown off, loader's upper legs exposed, then you hear your TC/gunner screaming while tank heats up. What happens next is unknown because you were shot in the head. What I described isn't even 10% of what it's like being a T-34 driver. To someone who pointed out my mistake (thank you!), readers are probably confused why there are 5 crew instead of 4 since I used terms people think there are actually a tank commander AND a gunner, not both. It’s a standard T-34 with driver, co-driver, loader and commander (acting as gunner too). Please note, I took some parts from memoirs of Russian tankers in WWII. The German's view on the Eastern Front is more gruesome because some Germans were scared of Russians due to their methods and tanks.I can recommend Wolfgang Faust's books on Kindle, they are memoirs so I'm not willing to consider what they say are to be facts. But hey, interesting perspective!Same goes for ‘T-34 in Action’ on Kindle. It’s a book about the writer who interviewed 12 T-34 tankers around 50–60 years after WWII so their memories may vary but at same time, provided perspectives not many have known or seen through it.

Would Palestine and Israel ever agree to a two-state solution?
Israel has already offered multiple times. So did the British before WW II. Every offer has been rejected by the Arabs of Palestine. Why would anyone think they’d change their minds now? This is, was, and always will be the ambition of the Arabs of Palestine:Here’s a list of rejections by the Arabs of Palestine over the past 100 years:1919: Arabs of Palestine refused nominate representatives to the Paris Peace Conference.1920: San Remo conference decisions, rejected by the Arabs of Palestine.1922: League of Nations decisions, rejected by the Arabs of Palestine.1937: Peel Commission partition proposal, rejected by the Arabs of Palestine.1938: Woodhead partition proposal, rejected by the Arabs of Palestine.1947: UN General Assembly partition proposal (UNGAR 181), rejected by the Arab League and the Higher Arab Committee for Palestine/.1949: Israel's outstretched hand for peace (UNGAR 194), rejected by the Arab League and the Higher Arab committee for Palestine.1967: Israel's outstretched hand for peace (UNSCR 242), rejected by the Arab League and the PLO.1978: Begin/Sa’adat peace proposal, rejected (except for Egypt) by the rest of the Arab world, including the PLO.1994: Rabin/Hussein peace agreement, rejected by the rest of the Arab League (except for Egypt and Jordan).1995: Rabin's Contour-for-Peace, rejected by the Palestinian Authority.2000: Barak/Clinton peace offer, rejected by Yasser Arafat, who then initiated the pre-planned second intifada.2001: Barak’s offer at Taba, rejected by the Palestinian Authority.2005: Sharon's peace gesture, withdrawal from Gaza, rejected by the Hamas takeover in 2007.2008: Olmert/Bush peace offer, rejected by Mahmoud Abbas.2009 to present: Netanyahu's repeated invitations to peace talks, rejected.2014: Kerry's Contour-for-Peace, rejected by the Palestinian Authority.2018: Trump’s “deal of the Century”, rejected in advance by Mahmoud Abbas.

What do the overseas Chinese think about Hong Kongers protesting against the China extradition act?
[EDIT 09–07–2019] A commentator says that my language here is “incendiary”. So read this answer “with caution”, a healthy dose of salt and maybe some pop-corn as I make a fool of myself :) Apologies in advanced to any readers who may be insulted, that’s probably not my intent but in expressing myself liberally (pun), some people may be insulted. As a citizen of a Democratic country myself, I respect your right to feel insulted. I also respect your right to insult me back, so have at it if you think I am a total arse.[EDITED] Someone reminded me about BNBR[EDIT 14–06–2019] Fixed sauce - mistaken wrote about the 9 offences. There are total of 46 offences listed under Schedule 1, 9 of which were removed after deliberations. So added 1 link to refer to the original 46.What do the overseas Chinese think about Hong Kongers protesting against the China extradition act?I am an ethnic Chinese.I have participated in several protests in my home country of Malaysia - particularly against corruption.I think those HongKongers protesting against their “extradition bill” are not protesting a bill but protesting China. However, I respect their right to protest.I am just very disappointed if they were protesting the bills just for the sake of sticking it to China. Which is what I see.READ THE BILL! (I’ve attached Sauce at the bottom)For heaven’s sake man. You are a democracy and you MUST defend your democracy by being vigilant and intelligent. An intelligent person reads the bills before protesting them. Failure to do so means… well, you fail at being a Democracy and you fail to uphold your own basic rights to the Democratic franchise. By being willfully stupid. [And if you can’t read that bill, talk to or engage people who can. Which is the next point.]A vigilant person double checks all the news and statements made in the media. Failure to do so allows you to be manipulated by special interests and this is EXACTLY how Democracy in the United States is failing. You could pretty much predict the outcome of an election based on who spent the most money.I’m seeing online how HongKongers are protesting “because China” or “because evil CCP” or some such. Eh What? Over-turn the whole bill “because China”? If you’re so against that just protest to remove that bit.[EDIT 17-Jun-2019] SUPER EXCELLENT ANSWER that describes the ExLaw - I was writing one but found Keith’s most excellent explanation under part 2: Keith Yeung's answer to What do the overseas Chinese think about Hong Kongers protesting against the China extradition act?Failure to understand Hong Kong todayHong Kong is NOT British Hong Kong, a colony and British Dependent TerritoryHong Kong is the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China. The future of Hong Kong is part of China. As a “family”, you can fight as much as you want among yourselves. But when outsiders try to interfere with you, you stand together! What HongKong protesters are doing is standing with outsiders against their own family. Because “fuck China!”Failure to appreciate China todayChina is not the Evil Empire (TM)China has a pretty good track record of looking after its citizens. Their competency is their legitimacy. [Yes, there are problems for individuals. But the fact remains; 2/3 of the people were in poverty in the 70s. Today? 3.1% Every year, China gov sets a poverty reduction target of xx MILLION people. Tell me which Democracy has done such a thing.]A government that provides a 50 year plan that covers Hong Kong’s evolution as part of a high tech, high income, high productivity Greater Bay Area shows incredible investment into Hong Kong SAR that is signNow and meaningful towards everyday Hong Kongers’ economic well-being far into the future.Britain is not Heaven on Earth (TM)Brexit. Seriously, wtf.Britain really doesn’t care about HongKong right now. And they cannot afford to maintain HongKong either.“In 1946 shortly after the war critical voices were raised against colonialism, governor Sir Mark Young proposed a 48-member Municipal Council with signNow competence to govern, one-third elected by non-Chinese, one third by Chinese institutions and one-third by Chinese individuals, known as the "Young Plan", believing that, "to counter the Chinese government's determination to recover Hong Kong, it was necessary to give local inhabitants a greater stake in the territory by widening the political franchise to include them."[9]…“Nonetheless, Young also noticed the emergence of the influence of Kuomintangover the institutions and activities of the local population and saw the possibility of the Municipal Council to be used for their own ends. Therefore, Young suggested that the revision of the constitution "should be so framed to preclude the possibility of the Council concerning itself with political matters, particularly in relation to the future status of the Colony."[4]”Democratic development in Hong Kong - WikipediaThe British were particularly clever, weren’t they? They set up Democracy just to stick it to China. And then, they say you can only have Democracy if you do not vote for the KMT. Yes, Democracy but you cannot choose what Britain does not approve.Funny thing was the then Governor’s proposals for council elections were defeated by the British themselves. It was only after WW2 when Britain was too weary and poor to support the colonies that Britain made a move to give HongKongers elections. So British interests always came before HongKong’s interest.Protesting for the sake of protesting against China is quite stupid when the law you’re protesting is about Hong Kong’s own special set of laws.If the Bill is completely over-turned, it would be a very signNow blow in a fight against corruption - particularly China’s. I don’t see how HongKongers can claim China to be corrupt but take glee in allowing corrupt officials to flee to HongKong.Finally. Good job protesting and exercising your democratic rights. Now figure out what you really want with HongKong’s future. Because Hong Kong is Hong Kong SAR whether anybody likes it or not.Sauce:The bill 1 Million HongKongers are excited about: https://www.legco.gov.hk/yr18-19...List of the original 46 “offences” in the bill, see Page 22: Annex B Schedule 1 of FOO - Description of Offenceshttps://www.legco.gov.hk/yr18-19...List of 9 “offences” that were removed under the Bill: http://gia.info.gov.hk/general/2...LCQ2: Human rights safeguards under Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019 to be submitted to LegCoP.S.: I am not from HONG-KONG! I said that right at the start. Yes, I do believe in HKongers’ right to protest. And no, I don’t know everything going on in HK. Although I am critical for the reason of the protest, I do appreciate there are many things about China that are flat out stupid. This Extradition Law would have been an excellent opportunity to set limits or guidelines for the interaction between HK and China - particularly around the issues many HongKongers think are important. HK SAR is special that way and could help China learn how to manage international issues - this is a somewhat naive view but seeing how China implements plans, measures and adapts, it is not an unreasonable assertion. Also, there’s one thing I’ve not been exposed to enough: discussions among the average HKonger with regards to this bill. Especially among the “younger people” - using this term loosely, that make the bulk of the protesters. I have been reading answers by Hong Kongers here on Quora but this isn’t enough.[26-June-2019] Hong Kong activists call on G20 leaders to help 'liberate' cityOn the placards:President Trump: Please Liberate Hong KongDefend Sovereignty of Hong KongDefend Hong Kong ConstitutionOi… that’s really bad. That’s basically a request for the US to invade China in order to cut out an “independent” Hong Kong. That’s a real slap to China’s face.

What things do I need to remember when travelling from India to Thailand?
Things to remember when planning Thailand Trip:1) Try to plan the trip well in advance say, 6-7 months. This will make your trip cheaper than planning the same at last moment.2) Thailand offers VOA (Visa on Arrival) to Indian Citizens. Visa in advance from Embassy is not required (also it is hectic and time consuming).3) It is mandatory for you to carry 10,000 THB (Thai Bhat) per person OR 20,000 THB per family PLUS 2000 THB Visa on Arrival charges per person. This is mandatory requirement and often the immigration office checks the cash per person before granting Visa.4) It is not mandatory to carry entire amount (in hand cash amount for VISA on Arrival) per family in THB only. It is recommended to carry 50% in THB and rest 50% in USD (the conversion rate in home currency or THB is better and you lose less money in conversion PLUS USD can be used for any other trip as well. Also, try to take higher currency notes for USD viz. $100, $50. If you are travelling alone, it is better to carry entire amount in THB.5) Make sure you have a DEBIT card (Mastercard or VISA card) which has international withdrawal transactions enabled in it. It is very important to get the same confirmed with your bank. This is required when you are in urgent need of cash in Thailand. ATMs are almost everywhere in Thailand but it is highly recommended to carry enough cash for your expenses. Also, every ATM withdrawal attracts a fee of 220 THB so make sure you withdraw max amount when using ATM in Thailand.6) Credit Cards too offer cash withdrawal limits however, these are pretty less per day. Also, remember the conversion rate from THB to INR is somewhere close to 2 (1THB = 2INR) so this limit reduces further when using the card in ATMs.7) Credit Card transactions attract a charge of 3% per transaction.8) If you are travelling with your spouse, female partner or family, it is suggested to book a better hotel/resort in Thailand (for obvious reasons of safety and privacy). Singles can go for cheaper options like hostels which are offered starting from Rs.500 per day.9) Make sure you choose a hotel which is close to the center of the city where you are planning to travel. This reduces a lot of expenses of taxis to signNow the central location.10) Make sure your passports have the expiry date greater than 6 to 9 months otherwise, the visa won't be granted.11) Make sure your flights are direct flights to Thailand and back to India. For Connecting flights via Kuala Lumpur other than Air Asia Flights with same PNR number on both connecting flights requires a VISA for Malaysia as well (always confirm with your carrier and embassies in question about the same). Also, Malaysia does NOT offer Visa on Arrival, the visa can be obtained from Malaysian Embassy in India and the process usually takes somewhere between 2 to 6 days.12) Read a bit about the local culture and follow the local rules, respect the local culture. The people of Thailand are mostly good and kind hearten but since it is a foreign land, its better to be safe and alert at all the times specially at night and in Southern part of the country where there is a huge Muslim population which is more sensitive.13) Recommended Sites for Hotels: Makemytrip.com, Booking.com, goibibo.com, Yatra.com. Compare the final prices (including taxes and charges) and select the best one. MMT and Booking.com: The largest selection of hotels, homes, and vacation rentals offers the best prices in most cases.14) Flights: Air Asia offers very good prices for Low fare flights. Subscribe to the alerts and often you can get great offers giving you one side flight to Bangkok within Rs. 5000 and sometimes lesser than that. Always compare different sites for the best price. Often, sites like Yatra, MMT, Goibibo shows the same prices for flights however, if you visit the official website of the air carrier, they might offer better prices and offers.15) Try to check the best places to visit in the city where you are planning to travel. This helps in last moment hassle about planning your day when you signNow there.16) You need to carry your flights, hotels, return flight details with you in hard copy since the same is checked while granted VISA.17) You don't need separate Universal plugs for your chargers since Thailand uses the similar power plugs in which India chargers can fit. Also, the power input is similar to that of ours i.e., 220v.18) If you are a Vegetarian, make sure you carry lots of Ready to eat stuff. There are many of them easily available in market (try MTR Oats and MTR Rice+x curry-mix packs). Carry few Maggi Packets (Cup Noodles will do but needs more space). Maggi can be prepared in Coffee Maker (Indian Jugaad ) provided in the hotel (make sure you check if it is available while booking hotel). There are restaurants which offer few Vegetarian dishes as well however, you need to be specific that you are a vegetarian who won't prefer Egg, Fish and meat (usually the people are understanding and will help you with your custom requirements). There are few Indian restaurants as well but the prices are sometimes insanely high which obviously not everyone can afford.19) Clothes you need to pack can be anything comfy for Summers. Optionally you can carry a small fold-able Umbrella and thin jacket/Sweatshirt (since the Air-conditioning in flights might be chilling during longer flights.20) Don't over-pack the stuff and remember to follow the baggage allowance. This is strictly followed. For Air Asia Low Fare flights, you might have to purchase Check-In baggage separately either on their website or on counter. It is suggested to purchase it while booking flights.21) Carry your recent colored (preferably with white background) passport size pictures with you. One is required for VOA Form and it is suggested to carry couple of them and keep them in your hand baggage from where you could quickly fetch the same while filling the VOA Form when you land in Thailand. Also, carry a pen and glue-stick so that you don't have to ask the same from others which might get time consuming.22) Suggested Apps for your stay in Thailand: GrabTaxi (similar to Uber for booking Taxis), Google Translator (requires internet to translate).23) INR is very hard to exchange in Thailand so, better carry THB or USD.The above will help you in planning and actually booking the flights and hotels. Once done, you are ready (to wait) for the time when you memorable trip will start. When your travel dates arrive, make sure you signNow the Airport atleast 3 hours in advance. International departure process takes more time than domestic ones. Prefer to take meals on Airport or before boarding since there might be few or no Vegetarian options available for Vegetarian travellers PLUS the prices of inboard meals are obviously much higher and the quantity is pretty less. Collect and fill the immigration card which is provided in flight before landing in Thailand.Once you land in Thailand, you need to first hit the Visa on Arrival Area. Now, for the new ones, you might first get confused with many queues and different counters. Visa on Arrival Counter is 'at the end' of the area i.e., the last section. There won't be anyone to guide you regarding the immigration or VISA process so, you need to find the right counter for Visa on Arrival instead of wasting your time in wrong queue. Quickly grab the VISA on arrival form from the counter in front of the VOA counter area and fill the form carefully with correct details. This requires your Place of Stay (Hotel), Reference section in the form can be left blank if the booking is not done through tour agents.Once done, take your VOA duly filled, Signed form with Photograph pasted on it, Passport, Hotel Booking Itinerary, Return Flight Tickets, 10,000 THB per person IN CASH, 20,000 THB per family and Immigration card which you got and filled in flight. Carry VISA fee (2000 THB in cash) handy. Once your turn comes, provide all these documents at the inspection counter which will provide you a token for another counter. Proceed to the waiting hall where you wait for your Token Number. Once your turn comes, provide all the documents and VISA fee for the officers to stamp your passport with VISA On Arrival Stamp. Now, you need to proceed to the immigration counter where you need to present your passport with VOA stamp and immigration card. The officer will stamp the immigration card and passport with immigration stamp and provide you the departure card which you will require while returning back to India. Now, you are done with VISA and Immigration and need to proceed towards the belt which wil carry your checked-in luggage. Collect the luggage and proceed towards the exit. You can optionally buy SIM card for travelers in 200 THB (or somewhere close to that) for 7 days. This might be handy when using internet outside WiFi areas. Alternatively, you can also get international roaming packs activated on your phone number. These packs becomes active when you receive or call in Thailand. Check with your service provider for different plans. Also, if you don't call or receive any calls when your get the packs enabled on your number, you still get SMS alerts for free (very useful for online transactions in Thailand where OTPs are required on your phone number). While proceeding towards exit, you can either book a taxi on your GrabTaxi app or check for cheaper options like shared mini bus (which are often cheaper if you are a couple or couple of friends). Compare the prices with GrabTaxi and choose the best one.Once you signNow your hotel, bear in mind that the check-in times are usually 2PM and the hotel will not let you check-in before that in most cases. Once checked-in, you can get fresh and inquire about the local sightseeing in the city. Often, hotel provides cheaper prices if you are choosing a shared tour. You can check and compare the prices with the nearby Tour Services and choose the best one. Always make sure you check that the cost of the Tour includes the entry fees for the places you are travelling to or not. For local City Sight seeing, you can optionally hire Bikes as well. The process is simple, you need to handover your passport to the bike rental shop and you can have bikes for 24 Hours. The charges are somewher close to 200 THB for 110cc bike and 250 THB for 150cc bikes. You need to return the bike after 24 hours with the same fuel level in which you started from the shop.Things to remember when you are in Thailand.1) The Thai culture is friendly and open. So, if you see something which you won't often see back in India, don't get over-excited and behave weird.2) It is quite normal to see a very young Thai girl with a comparatively much older white guy. If you see such things, don't stare or behave weird, it is not cool.3) Thailand is famous destination among Indians so, if you spot other Indians specially the married couples, please refrain from the bad habit of starting or passing comments. Not cool at all.4) Thailand is very clean. Please refrain from littering. Not cool at all.5) Follow local laws and talk with local people with respect and respect their culture. The locals will be very welcoming when they find you respecting their cutlure.6) The locals are generally kind and helpful but you can still find few rude and weird ones in Bangkok and specially more of them in Southern parts of Thailand like Phuket where there are many migrants and has a high Muslim population.7) Temples in Thailand strictly follow the rules of covering revealing clothes for females. Females are suggested to carry piece of cloth or stole long enough to cover the area from waist to feets.8) Indian Currency is very hard to exchange so, better carry THB or USD and always make sure you keep your Debit/Credit cards and documents with you.9) Be alert at all the time since it is a foreign land and precaution is better than cure.10) When you shop in Thailand, people might quote insanely high on the items they are selling. It is always better to bargain on the items you are purchasing (ofcourse except on the big stores and malls). When i was purchasing souvenirs from Floating Market near Bangkok, the shop owners used to quote more than 3 times than the price the could sell it. For example, few of them were quoted at 1200 THB and i didn't budge anything above 400 THB and finally the shop owner ended up selling it to me at the same price which i quoted. Of course, the same formula doesn't apply on all the items . But, yes you will have to bargain to get the best price.11) Please don't bargain just for the sake of fun. The locals are hard working people and we shouldn't make their life hard by irritating them.12) For shopping food products or beverages (beer, softdrinks), there are plenty of 7 Eleven Stores. Highly recommended: Hot Cappuccino in 7 Eleven Stores.13) Recommended: Mangoes in Bangkok, Cappuccino from 7 Eleven Stores, Coconut Ice Cream, Chang Beer, Singha Beer.Places to Visit in Bangkok: Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew (reclining buddha), Khaosan Road (Nighlife, Shopping), Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Asiatique The Riverfront, Floating Market, Train Market.Places to Visit in Phuket: Jungceylon Mall, Bangla Walking Street (at night ), Patong Beach, Phi-Phi Island Tour, Strolling in City, Madras Cafe.

What is the most amazing thing you've ever seen as an ER doctor?
The most amazing thing I saw an ER doctor do was perform an Emergency Thoracotomy. This is a procedure in which the doctor, typically a surgeon, cuts open the chest entirely through the ribs, muscle, and tissue to access vital organs... in this case the heart. It’s quite a heroic measure for an ER doctor to attempt and they absolutely don’t happen all the time. Many ER staff go their entire career without witnessing one.I was a new nurse working in a rural Level 3 Trauma Center with a year ER experience at best. It was the night shift, very early in the morning, and we only had a handful of nurses and 1 ER doctor present. We would get some pretty extreme cases in this tiny little podunk meth-infused town... farming injuries, drownings from the river, horrific car accidents from the many one-lane highways nearby. I commuted an hour just for the experience as not one hospital in my own city would hire me. Anyways. This patient was dumped at the ambulance entrance by vehicle. A young male in his 30’s and he was completely naked. As soon as his body plopped out of the car- the car screeched off never to return. We lifted his dead weight onto a gurney and rolled him into tiny room 14. Not even a trauma room with the extra space and equipment- they were all full.He was extremely pale and barely moving- like a dying bug in its last moments... a little squirm, a twitch, and the look of death in his eyes. There was no visible blood or obvious trauma... it took us a good minute to find a tiny hole in the middle of his chest. His vital signs were in the danger zone- but present nonetheless... we were not performing CPR yet. I was on his right side- marking my territory-establishing involvement. I was nervous but ready for war. This newbie wanted a piece. I secured two large IV’s in his right arm, collected blood and started fluids immediately. I left the bedside and turned to the long counter in the room to set down the blood tubes. The doctor was intubating and smoothly directing the team.I had my back turned as I was tasking at the counter- charted a few things on a paper towel - preparing blood on the IV pole- and then I heard this splatting sound as a large amount of fluid hit the deck.I turn around to see what it was and I see the ER doctor hunched over opening this guy’s chest. The patient was stabbed in the heart with something I can only imagine resembling an ice pick. The splat was blood from his “pericardial sac”, hitting the floor. The pericardial sac is a small sac the heart rests safely and snuggly in.There’s no space for extra fluid- so when someone takes a blunt trauma or stabbing to the heart they go into what's called “cardiac tamponade.”Cardiac tamponade is basically when that small sac that holds your heart up is filled up with fluid/blood and the heart can’t pump effectively due to the increased pressure in that tiny space.So- the doctor “released” the tamponade as he opened up his chest and pericardial sac- and ever so gracefully sewed up the wound to his heart within minutes of his arrival. He saved the patient’s life by cutting him open and sewing up his heart right then and there in the ER… that took nerves of steel.Being that we were a level 3 trauma (versus a level 1)- we didn’t have trauma surgeons immediately available. The surgeon showed up minutes after, and the look on his face when he entered tiny little room 14 was priceless.“Well, I guess you don’t really need me in here!” he said quite impressed.I was standing there in complete awe at what had all just taken place in that dumpy ER in that podunk town... looking at this guy’s insides, his heart and lungs fully exposed and working. I was fascinated with his lungs and how they looked as they inflated and deflated. They didn’t look like I imagined, they resembled a fish... all slimy and moving about.I don’t know the patient's long-term outcome, but according to the ICU nurses he was causing trouble on the unit a week later.I called that doctor “Superman” from then on. He even looked like Clark Kent. Tall, curly black hair, glasses. He rightfully earned the title that night.10 years later, I’m still in the ER, and that is the only Thoracotomy I have seen.

Are Chennai metro trains really worth our money to travel in?
In this answer, I'll tell you in detail about Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) covering its advantages and disadvantages. Then finally I will tell my opinion whether it's worth the money that I paid (or pay). One can decide whether it's worth for you after reading this answer.Starting from the entrance, the sign boards are perfectly placed and are very helpful for office goers, new-comers especially youngsters, but it's really difficult for aged people, though the sign boards are in both Tamil (regional language) and English. But this doesn't seems to be a major problem because of the staffs working there. They are helping those who seems to have lost track (personal experience at Nehru Park Metro). These CMRL workers are present in more numbers at every station, where one can get easy help and signNow your destination safe.Next at the ticket counter, again here the staffs are very polite and ready to explain in detail whatever doubts we have regarding the trains to board, the validity of Travel Card (yes one have to buy this card to travel in this unlike our usual Chennai Suburban train tickets). The staffs outside the counter would direct you the way to signNow your platform, without you asking them.At the metro rail platforms, there are frequent announcements of the trains in detail both in Tamil and English, which will be helpful for non-Tamil speaking people. Also one could see many staffs assisting people to signNow their correct train. This is called as customer service at its best. The platforms are super tidy, well maintained by the workers.About the train journey, the trains are very punctual unlike our usual experience, if at all it's late not more than two to three minutes which is a rare thing. There's automated voice which tells about the next station, why one should get down at this station, for example get down at CMBT (a famous location in the city) to signNow Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, yeah it's well-known for the city people, but think about the outsiders. Watch this video to get very good idea about Chennai Metro Rail Limited,The time taken to signNow the destination is very less compared to other modes of transportation in the city which is the major advantage. Now coming to the negative I heard about CMRL is its pricing. The fares are higher than other modes like buses, share autos. But just think about the time one can save by using metro and the pollution one is exposed to is much more in other modes than CMRL,which is fully air conditioned, well maintained, tidy .Thus we can say less or no pollution by using metro trains. Solution is, maybe if the fare is constant for another ten years, since we cannot expect it to be reduced, it won't seem to be expensive. It takes more than an hour to signNow Nehru Park from St.Thomas Mount using other public transport with fare below Rs.30, but with the arrival of metro trains I could signNow the destination in 20 to 30 minutes by paying Rs.40 (now they're giving festival time offer 20%) else Rs.50, you could see the difference in time and money paid, decide whether it’s worth or not. Finally, coming to my destination part, which is an underground station. Even the railway stations are air-conditioned in the underground phase unlike overhead phase. This looks world class, very attractive but less traffic. Unlike other metros like Delhi (correct me if I'm wrong), here the platforms have closed doors. One can check in this video,In the most populous city like Chennai, people must use public rapid transit system like CMRL for reducing fossil fuel consumption, pollution produced by using individual vehicles. From the experiences I had in the past, the travel was (is) worth the money I paid (pay). If I face any bad experiences in the future, definitely I'll update it here.Edit 1:I forgot to tell about safety which my friend reminded me. The metro stations are under surveillance. Also the doors of the trains are closed unlike our local trains (EMU and MRTS).Also I like to add Travel Card. This is a nice initiative to go paperless, just you need to fill the amount in ticket counter or ticket vending machine and can travel anywhere for that amount. The validity of the card is five years. Only thing is you have to keep it safe.Another friend mentioned about the restrooms in the comment. Hope the answer is more clear.Edit 2:CMRL's new initiative of last mile connectivity by promoting bicycle system at Chennai Metro railway stations. (Source: CMRL Facebook page)That's it. Thanks for reading.

What was the craziest thing a mechanic said about your car?
When I first moved to Pullman, Washington for my postdoctoral position in 1992, I needed a car. I bought a 1981 two-door Chevy Chevette. I didn't know it at first, but according to my mechanic it had “Frankenstein’s Monster’s Revenge” under the hood instead of the stock motor. What’s ironic (in a good way) was that the engine ran remarkably well the entire time I owned the Chevette (3 years—gave it to someone while it was still running perfectly when I got a new car).I was referred by a relative to a mechanic who lived in the tiny town of Albion, WA, and brought in the car to have its radiator repaired due to a leak.He opened the hood and stared with this dumbfounded look on his face.Mechanic: “What the heck is this?”I went over and saw he was staring at the engine with a definite astonished and confused look on his face. His eyes looked like they were almost bugging out of his head.“I’ve never seen anything like it in my entire career.”Me “What’s the problem with the car? It seems to run perfectly fine except for the radiator leak.”Mechanic: “That's just it, you shouldn't have been able start it much less drive it. Somebody's managed to do the impossible.” He was really fascinated and examined some resin-like material between the head and block of the engine.“It runs very nicely. Why should it be impossible for it to work?” I was wondering if he was pulling my leg, but he was quite fascinated and couldn't stop staring at the engine. I have to admit I was suddenly quite worried about it myself because it all of a sudden looked ‘wrong’ to me as it sunk in that the head didn’t seem aligned with the block correctly due to displaced bolt holes, etc.“Who’d you buy this from? Dr. Frankenstein?” His eyebrows were knit in confusion. “Could you start the car? I want to see this so I can believe what I'm seeing here.”I got in the car, put in the clutch and started it.“Damn! It's really running, and sounds perfectly normal. I'm amazed, and now I've seen it all.” He actually slapped his forehead, knocking his hat off onto the floor behind him and didn't even try to pick it up. I got it for him later.I got out of the idling car and joined him. “What's so amazing about the car?”“Here's the thing. You have only the bottom half of the engine of a 1981 Chevette, the block. See all of these empty bolt holes and overlapping and underlapping metal where the head is attached? How there's supposed to be a lot more bolts holding the head to the block and a gasket between them, but only two have any bolts? And how this resin you see instead of a head gasket, that has to be some sort of high temperature polymer adhesive?” He pointed to each item as he mentioned it, sticking his pencil into an unoccupied bolt hole with nothing but air below it to emphasize how peculiar the configuration was. I was getting more nervous by the second, wondering if I were driving a ticking timebomb with a motor that could explosively fly apart any time.“I still don't see the problem?” I could see how the head and block didn't quite match, but the engine seemed perfectly fine to me, not even oily from any leaks—at least not yet.“Somebody actually glued the head from either a 1979 or 1980 (some totally different kind of car) to the block of your ’81 Chevette. Aside from being 4-cylinder with what must have been the same bore size, this head is from a different type of engine, with different bolt patterns and overall shape. Managed to perfectly align the cylinders somehow. Definitely Dr. Frankenstein’s work here.”*********************************************************************************************EDIT: I was informed that the engines were virtually the same between 1979 through 1981 for Chevettes . The head was obviously quite different, and the 1979 or 1980 head he was talking about could have been for another model or even make such as Pontiac, or something way out there like a small Ford. All I know is the mechanic was astonished the engine ran and the head was so different than the block the only way to secure it was with the glue because the bolt holes were so differently positioned and trying to fit a normal head gasket would have been impossible. I thought about it and corrected what he said as I remembered a little bit moreMy memory is 24 years old here, so a few details might be off. The Dr. Frankenstein comments were as I remembered them—as was the nickname he gave the vivisectioned engine.*********************************************************************************************“What sort of engine do I have now? Will it work for the long term?” I was terrified I’d have to replace the engine soon, and might possibly not even be able to drive it home.“Sounds great, so it will probably run perfectly fine for years, but as for the kind of motor you now have, I guess I'd have to call it the Frankenstein’s Monster’s Revenge engine.”After this and a bunch of other assurances that the adhesive and configuration were stable, I felt confident enough to drive it home to my place when he finished fixing the radiator and I paid him.He offered to take $25 per hour as long as I kept bringing the car back for him to work on—just so he could see the engine again. He actually thanked me each time I brought the car in from then on.There was one time the engine gave me trouble. When driving home from Seattle to Pullman after a professor interview trip to New Jersey, summer of 1993 on I-90, in the middle of nowhere, the timing belt and several other parts literally fell off the engine while I coasted about a mile after the engine abruptly lost all power. I had it towed to and fixed in Moses Lake. Mechanics at the Chevy dealership seemed blasé about the engine—never asked to speak to me directly—got the timing belt and pulley system replaced, and sent me on my way very quickly. How So quickly? One of my mother’s friends who just happened to live there and recognized me, knew the head shop mechanic and helped me get on my way the next day—otherwise it would have been a three or more days wait. Very few troubles after that.About a year after I moved away first to California (replaced my exhaust system while living there, and after the guys got a good look at my engine {same amazed looks as my Albion mechanic} they gave me a chrome exhaust system for free—I really felt odd at first driving an ordinary Chevette with silvery exhaust system hardware, but I liked it and the car ran really quietly from then on), then southern Idaho for my professor job, I decided to drive 450 miles north from Twin Falls, Idaho to visit some relatives in Clarkeston, WA and a different friend in Albion in addition to the mechanic.I needed an oil change and something else a bit more important repaired (sorry, I forgot what it was) and stopped by the shop. My old mechanic was so happy to see the car again with Frankenstein’s Monster’s Revenge, the vivisectioned hybrid engine, I only had to pay for the oil and oil filter. We also had a good laugh together when he saw all of the new chrome hardware from the exhaust manifold to the tailpipe, especially the absurd mirror-bright polished muffler.I put about 15,000 miles on the Chevette with its bizarre engine before giving it to someone in my church who needed a car. This same man drove it to and from California several times as he moved his stuff out of Twin Falls.EDIT: after reading the other answers to this question and seeing how many mechanics or ‘technicians’ were dishonest slimeballs or totally clueless, I'm pleased to say that my Albion mechanic (I think his name was Dave—maybe) was both competent and honest. Thanks everyone for the upvotes. What my Albion mechanic decided to name my Chevette engine was the craziest thing a mechanic has ever said to me.
