a scanner and without buying anything this is allison from computers.mom and this video will show you how to sign pdf documents right on your computer it's easy and it's free before we get started let's make sure you're in the right place this video is about signing pdfs on a windows computer not a mac if you're a mac user please use the link for our mac pdf video also just to be clear there's a difference between an electronic signature and a digital signature although they may look exactly the same an electronic signature is basically just an image of your signature that you use in place of physically signing a document a digital signature uses special technology to guarantee the authenticity of a document like a contract and it's not free this video is about electronic signatures all you'll need to get started is acrobat reader also known as acrobat reader dc which is a free app from adobe there's also a paid version adobe acrobat which has more features if you already have acrobat you can use that too but for our purposes all you need is the free one if you don't have acrobat reader on your computer you can get it at adobe.com forward slash reader fair warning acrobat reader is so widely used that it's a popular target for criminals there are a lot of fake versions online that can be dangerous so be careful to get it only from the real adobe website now that that's out of the way let's dive in anytime you need to sign a pdf document it's just three quick steps open the pdf document in acrobat reader open fill and sign and place your signature on the document for example here on my desktop is a pdf file that needs a signature you can see from the red and white icon that it's a pdf file not a word document or an excel spreadsheet or a picture or anything else pdf by the way stands for portable document format the whole idea is that the document looks exactly the same regardless of what computer or device or printer you use so it's portable you can use it anywhere when you double click on a pdf it can automatically open in acrobat reader you can tell if you're an acrobat reader because it will say so right here at the top of the window but what if it doesn't say acrobat reader at the top of the window this pdf automatically opened in a different app not acrobat reader if you run into this problem just close the file and then right click on it then left click open with on the menu and you'll see all the apps on this computer that are able to open pdfs like firefox chrome and microsoft edge just choose acrobat reader from the list and you're good to go now your pdf is open in acrobat reader locate the purple fill and sign option on the right side navigation bar you might need to scroll down to find it click on it and then click the blue fill in sign button alternatively you can open fill and sign by clicking tools up here and then clicking fill in sign either way the fill and sign toolbar appears at the top of the document there's a bunch of useful options here that you can experiment with but let's focus on signing click sign on the toolbar notice that a previously created signature is available right here we'll show you how to store signatures after this adobe only allows you to store one signature at a time and one set of initials but once you have saved a signature you can use it over and over again click on the saved signature to select it and it appears hovering over the document scroll to the point in the document where the signature belongs and click to place the signature you don't have to do it perfectly because you can adjust its position after you place it see the little blue circle on the lower right corner of the rectangle here drag that blue circle to adjust the size of the signature as needed you can also use the font size buttons here or delete it completely by clicking on the trash button when you're finished signing close and save the document once it's saved though the signature becomes part of the document and can't be edited anymore so it's a good idea to save it as a new document with a new name that way if you mess up you can go back to the original version and you're done now of course you're probably wondering how to get the signature saved in the first place as we mentioned acrobat reader only allows you to save one signature at a time but we can delete this old one by clicking the minus sign next to it now click add signature and you'll see three options for creating a new signature type draw and image type is already selected this option lets you type on your keyboard to create a sort of fake signature in a handwriting font there are a few different style options here it's fast and easy but it probably looks nothing like your actual signature the second option draw lets you use whatever input device you have on your computer a mouse a trackpad if you're using a laptop or a touch screen if your computer has one to draw your signature i'm going to do this with a mouse and as you can see it can be a little awkward but at least it's a more authentic signature to keep it click apply the third option image lets you use a picture of your signature that you have previously saved as a file on your computer you'll need to write your signature in blue or black ink on a piece of white paper and then turn it into a file on the computer either by scanning it or by taking a picture of it and transferring the picture to your computer once you have the file on your computer click select image right here navigate to the saved picture file click open and then apply this method gives you the most realistic version of your signature but it's not necessarily the easiest way and it can also have another problem unlike the first two methods the area around the signature is not transparent there's a visible background so unless you get a good clean image to work with it may not look great in the document i've exaggerated the problem here by using a very gray image so you can see what i mean if one of those three options works for you then you're all set but if not there's a fourth method that's kind of hidden this is probably the least common method so i'm just going to zip through it quickly if you have a smartphone or a tablet like an ipad with a touchscreen you can create a signature on your device which may give you a better result and then use an adobe account to sync that signature to your computer this involves three steps create an account with adobe which is free and sign in on your computer then get the adobe fill and sign app on your device your phone or tablet and sign into the app with that same adobe account finally create a signature using the touchscreen on the device and it will automatically be available on the computer too to get started click sign in on the upper right of the acrobat reader window and create a free adobe account if you don't have one already once you verify the account and sign in this little circle icon replaces the word sign in so you can tell you've successfully signed it then on your phone or tablet download the free adobe fill and sign app sign in with that same adobe account click the sign button here tap create signature and then right on the screen with your finger or a stylus when you go back to your computer that signature will automatically appear so long as you have signed in on
