a completely new way of life for people the Bell and whistle system was not something that we had before that at women's would start her day with a bell telling her it's time to wake up it's time to get your kids ready in one hour you need to be in the amount of fret of the mill ready to work if you were not inside the mill building when that six o'clock and bell struck then the door was locked and you weren't allowed to come to work for the day there was absolutely no tournaments allowed you can see here this is actually the first Bell second though the meal Bell these were all four in the different months of the year this was all from the low Mills down in Massachusetts now a lot of I'll leave this this slide up so that you guys can look at this a little bit closer when we're done but you can see that there's all of these different rules for when the different when the bells are going to ring how long you have and where you need to be before the next Bell strikes as I said before most people working at least 10 hours a day but usually it was 12 they were working 6 days a week so you're imagining 72 hours a week and most people over the age of 16 were only earning about 4 dollars and 90 cents for the week under that age children were only earning about 4 cents an hour you can see here the urbanization in New Hampshire really increased between 1800 and 1950 this whole period that we about 1850 approximately the revolution of the Industrial Revolution started just about 20 years after so in 1800 only 3% of New Hampshire was populated by 1850 17% and then you can see in the 50 years this huge jump between and this was all due to the the Industrial Revolution coming to New Hampshire - from those advertising overseas for people to come and work the amount of immigration that New Hampshire attracted and by 1950 there were 57 percent of New Hampshire was populated now why did the Industrial Revolution end so man you've actually moved to less expensive places specifically when I talked about the textile mills after the Civil War the the South began trying to start their own factory systems they it took them a while to get it off the ground but by the early 1900's the South was a thriving industry for cotton they also were able to start manufacturing rayon which was considered this you know amazing substitute for silk and we did not have the technology up here because of the gauge of our Factory is in the mill we didn't have in order to produce that and so over time especially our textile industry began dying out just because we didn't we weren't able to keep up with modern trends and that the technology began to be updated in the shoe making industry shoes factories spot in the South actually came up with much better ways to produce the shoes where people weren't even needed at all to cut out the leather they were using other types of material for making shoes we didn't we hadn't even touched that in New Hampshire at all in regards to the logging industry although it still happens we were having a problem in northern New Hampshire with erosion we had out we have really over logged our northern New Hampshire and we had a lot of problems with erosion and flooding several towns actually got completely wiped out and it was just a time where actually the people pushed for the founding of what not the White Mountain National Forest it's it put that control back into the hands of the government so it's not over a lot at that point so these are all industries that have not really don't thrive in New Hampshire anymore the only one that we talked about that still is really thriving in a sense is the granite quarrying that still happens in several places but swans and granite works is now on rattlesnake Hill and it's been an active operation the Statehouse was built in 1818 and it's still an active operation today so it's still I wouldn't say it's thriving but it certainly has running and running well and this last picture this is actually a mill it's a picture that we have in our collection at the Historical Society but it was an actually a very early Christmas pre-industrial revolution now did anybody have any questions at all about anything today yeah I'd be curious what your sources were that you talked often early in the presentation about Antrim history Oh actually what I was reading about it in the last few days I super fascinating the whole last half of the book is genealogy of interim families but then the whole first part of the book it had a lot of anecdotal you know there are all the stories about people trying to transport their goods out but absolutely I can send a degree I can even probably find it on my phone okay we leave that be great thanks all the trainers absolutely so right I believe that there is in process there is you know a another talk about post post it's gonna actually be post-world War One is really what it's gonna be but about the developments in New Hampshire in regards to another question proximity of Boston to like Manchester and what what stood out Manchester versus Rhode Island and Western Mass and what made New Hampshire unique so rushing rivers here in New Hampshire than most other New England states we have a lot more water than a lot of other states however the other thing was people were working in Boston and the pollution was horrible people there there was certainly pollution here in New Hampshire - especially in the mills but people who are coming to work here even when they were told you can't work in Boston anymore like this is bad for your health people were coming to work in New Hampshire because of that and you know that is a good question - I I would be interested I think in in exploring a little bit more I wonder if at that point like what were the business benefits of me giving Hampshire versus Massachusetts but I don't I don't know that I apologize not so much they say they stayed local because everybody had there not everybody but at least within a town there was at least somebody who produced or more than several people that produced corn and grain and and so those tended to stay local now every town had at least three gristmills which can tell you they weren't super efficient either if you think about the the work that went into the grinding of grains and corn it was not that wasn't something that was ever sent out it was always very locally sourced and locally for sure so I well I actually grew up in Webster but when I was little even though we went to Claremont a lot and we would sit on the banks of the river and the mills at that point we're actually not in operation I think they were when I was growing up they were looking for a buyer for the mills before they were burnt think that's a huge fire and they were burned but the male's along the sugar river yeah I just remember growing up at my dad taking me to see the water wheels and we just grew up knowing what a grist mill was there's my dad loved the grist mill that's on the 123 between Hillsboro or interim and Stoddard there's a old log email or grist mill to the left and my dad loved it so much he actually built our house to look like it like you just loved the slope of everything so yeah I did grow up with a father that loved that and really just to learn and studying in some certainly that's contributed to it so there's lots of things for you guys to try to the mark I'll come back and if anybody has questions there's a little bit from every industry that we've talked about the glass bottles in particular are fascinating one of them actually is a medicine bottle that has danced into it has the doses right on the side and the ounces right on the side so feel free to try on mine I'll be in the back if you have any questions are about what things are and how they work and can you put it back on the slide with them [Applause]
