Add backer radio
alright kc9 cuk another quick video what we have here what we have here is a Zenith 6d two six one five and this happens to be the - end model and this is the classic Zenith boomerang radio but that's not what this video is about we're restoring this for a customer and one of the common problems that people run into and I get asked all the time is I can't get the radio knob off I think someone glued it on what are you doing that instance I've only found one radio on hundreds and hundreds of restorations of these all-american fives where the knob is actually glued on so here's the first knob and this was for the the actual tune control and there it is and these and these are original you don't find these radios with original knobs a lot of the times there's a little felt backer there and the reason for that is a lot of times they're pressed on or when they're when they're taken off you'll see little grooves inside of the controls and a lot of times so I'm gonna go to put it back together real quick and they will dist they won't try to line it up that it's pushing it as hard as they can and hold on we got a dog got the door open here in the repair shop because it's a little fresh air close it there we go gonna be a little better so that's not my dog neighborhood dog somewhere but anyway yeah back to it so anyway there's little grooves in there so it's important that you line those grooves up with the grooves on the control now they won't always line up but if you fiddle around with it you'll definitely feel where one you can you can you could push it in a lot easier than another way and a lot of times what people will do is when putting back together a radio or if our knob falls off they'll just stick it on there and just jam it in as hard as they can eventually get to go back on on this particular radio these knobs we're extremely hard to get off now I'm hoping I don't have to do it on this one put on this one even with the tools I'm gonna show you there's an extreme measure now I want to tell you I am expressed you need to use extreme caution when trying to do it this way I actually had to heat this one up with a heat gun and you put the heat gun on low you keep it away from the radio you constantly check temperature because you can do damage to this veneer other plastic closed parts heat guns get extremely hot I have a heat gun that has a it's a hobby heat gun it's almost like a pencil and I unfortunately I put it back in its box but it's very very narrow so I like that heat gun whereas you see like the standard heat gun you see at the hardware store where it looks like a big gun and has a huge nozzle on and it blows heat everywhere I like the one where it's very fine and I actually made a little tip that I stole off of a hot air rework station which you can also use if you have a really nice hot air rework station so if you got a hot air rework station you can put the temperature really low and and work with that try to control it and that's actually probably what I should have used today but I was being lazy and I already had the heat gun out for some heat-shrink you know I was doing on some cable so anyway so you can heat that up really slow and then try the techniques I'm going to show you now but that's only in extreme situations so here's what I use these are just basic pry tool kits yeah usually used in the automotive this is actually uh I think this is like a wrench tool out of a diamond antenna diamond hand radio antenna they give you in the packaging and you can see this is even bent because I needed it pry on one side and not on the other on something I was doing and then these I find extremely handy you'll get these you can get these online if you want to you can make your own but there's little pieces of really cheap mild steel bent and 90 degrees there and what we're gonna do is we'll put that behind the knob like so when you want to get it in there as far as possible and this light light light pressure cuz these are extremely cently this one doesn't want to come either so like I tried to take both these off by hand and you couldn't do it and what someone will do and this is what you not do is they'll take a screwdriver and try to stick it in there and twist it or pry on it and these really old whether it's plastic on bakelite early form of plastic these will just literally crack split in half and then you go and get replacement knobs and that's why none of these have the replacement knobs a lot of times these radios are sitting in a kitchen or their be exposed to Sun and these become very brittle so anyway that's what we do you can either get something like this which is rather thick and the other times you can't get it behind it and you'll notice a lot of times these shafts are bent too because people are trying to pry on these anyway get something like this super simple get it behind these actually came out of by the way if you're if you if you familiar what these are you've seen you're like where do they see those these are out of a car stereo installation kit so there's some security keys on the side of the radio that hold the the radio in it's a little bracket and you stick these in the side of the radio and it releases the radio to pull it out so anyway I have a ton of these I keep them so right behind the knob as far and as possible okay and then this gives you a lot of leverage but closer to the inside of the knob than the outside and this pry ever so gently this one is tight and they're open and as you pull the knob out which you'll see this knob is coming out there we go it is coming this is a this is a good example these are always so tight there we go all right and what I like to do is when I'm see how it goes this tool goes all the way up to that that main shaft of the the front control and what I like to do is just pry it out a little bit till I can see behind this and I like to get it right behind there like that if you can get it behind and be only prying on that not on any of this outer part there's a good chance you'll get it out without breaking it I've had people say you know I put int a little tiny bit of anti-seize on the shaft and stick it in there that's not it's kind of what anti-seize is meant for but not really and I don't know the long-term effects of anti-seize on this plastic it's probably fine you could even I guess put a light a light drop of oil in there and do that I find it most time not necessary so anyway that's just a quick tip on how to remove stubborn knobs and this this applies to everything whether it's antique radios ham radios test equipment all kinds of stuff where you see any type of a knob that this you know you either have to pull out a nail and screw out of the side of it and it still won't come out and it's this stubborn like I said extreme conditions like I on this other side of the radio let's put this knob aside and grab that one back so this is the other one I was able to no damage is done to this I did apply heat to it but like I said with extreme caution and that this makes us a little tiny bit soft and you wouldn't think it would affect a lot of times I come in from the side trying to blow the hot area behind it because like I said once again I'm trying to get to the main shaft here another another quick tip is you know I mark the front of this with black marker just so you know this is a I actually use erasable markers right there and then right here just so I know that knob was on that side most of the time you can get away with you know switching around but I just like to make sure this in case this is like I said once again been forced on and those grooves have been damaged in any way Lisa I'm putting it back on the same side another thing is how do I prevent the knob from falling off well hey you get replacement knobs if it's damaged enough B you'll see these little gaps in the front of the controls and what you can do and I actually don't use a screwdriver like this I have a little thing I made that goes in here you can stick the screwdriver blade in this and be so careful with this you can spread these out a little bit to make the knob fit on tighter that's a lot of the reasons why these don't come off you'll notice I don't know if you could see it in the camera so did you have the radio but this one closed this one has been really really really spread out and that's probably why I had to use a heat gun and do that and what I'll do is I'll clean these up too there's a there is it looks like to be corrosion and rust on them I will clean these up really really good and then put a little like I said a little bit of light oil don't have it dripping all over it just a little bit of light oil wipe it off of the towel I do this when the chassis is out obviously I'm whited out with it wipe it off a towel so there's no excess oil dripping all over the place or any like that and then you can put the knob back on and you should be good to go I hope this helps somebody that is just getting into restoring radios or as an old radio sitting on the shelf they're thinking about taking apart maybe this will help with a ham radio it like I said this applies to any type of knob that gets pressed on with these kind of like chefs all right I have a great time if you enjoyed the video or liked the information please like the video please share it and please subscribe to my channel I appreciate it more videos to come thanks
