hello my name is Heather Nunziato and I'm a board certified behavior analyst with Brett DiNovi and associates today I'll be discussing contingency contracts also known as behavior contracts which is under E-04 for use contingency contracts in the bacb fourth edition cast list so what exactly is a contingency contract Cooper heron and Heward defined contingency contracts as a document that specifies a contingent relationship between the completion of a specified behavior and access to or delivery of a specified reward such as free time a letter grade or preferred activity contingency contracts have been applied to a variety of behaviors across multiple settings Bristol and Sloane used contingency contracts to increase the rate of studying and exam performance in college students Cantrell and colleagues wrote contingency contracts for school-aged children to obtain specific reinforcers for when they increase appropriate behaviors there are three components in a contingency contract one explanation of the task to description of the reward and three the task record first I will discuss the task component which is a description of the behavior and consists of the following who will perform the behavior and receive the reward what is the behavior and the task that the person will be performing when will the task be completed this question identifies the time the task will be completed how well is the most important part of the task this question describes the specific task or operationally defines parts of the task or behavior the second component of a contingency contract is the reward this describes what the reward is and how it will be delivered the reward identifies and answers the following questions what is the actual reward was the criteria met and when will it be delivered unlike other forms of reinforcement the reward might be delivered with a delay for example if the child wants to earn a sleepover with a friend and they reached the criteria Friday afternoon they might have to wait until Friday night or over the weekend for the reward of the sleepover how much of the reward will be received this should be discussed with the person who is getting the reward and the person who is giving the reward the third and final component of the contingency contract is the task record aka the data on the contract there should be a clear spot for the data to be collected when the individual completes the task and the person assessing can record this can be done with checks marks stars X's etc after the contract is complete all parties discuss and negotiate their ideas and then the contract should be signed by those involved that should be the student with either their teacher or their parents Miller and Kelly 1994 discussed an article on goal-setting and contingency contracting to improve homework performance to improve task engagement and academic achievement contingent rewards were provided as antecedent control over target behaviors through identification of goals and reinforcement contingencies each week the parent and child negotiated contracts that specified daily and weekly rewards contingent on achievement of homework and bringing the necessary materials home such as textbooks workbooks and other assignments the rewards ranged from stickers and late bedtime as daily rewards and having a playdate with a friend or going on a special trip somewhere as a weekly reward not shown was the task record that was used to collect the data and monitor progress of the child the parents and child collaborated together during the whole process together contingency contracts are used to help maintain existing behaviors teach new ones and decrease challenging behaviors they can serve as a visual reminder to help maintain the criteria that needs to be met and what behaviors are expected to be in place thank you for watching and to help disseminate the science of ABA please like and share this video with others you
