[Music] [Music] welcome to another episode of backdoor busted I'm your host Rob McCullough make a rob mix-up over on Twitter this is the series where we kind of take a deeper dive on all kind of fun campaign projects on Kickstarter IndieGoGo the pop culture Ben so today we're gonna look at IAB Holder the art of Dungeons & Dragons it's a documentary and it's over on Kickstarter let's take a look so here we are on Kickstarter idly behold our yard of Dungeons & Dragons I have to beholder they are the dungeons dragon celebrates the amazing artwork that helps create the worlds in which we all play I it is the first campaign by cave girl productions you have a couple friends here who back it and they are doing incredibly well right now they have reached their goal and then some they were looking for 25,000 US another at 27 a 6-3 nine and I wanted to wait a few days from when this went live so I could just get a little bit more data so we could talk about the trend and how it's going cuz it's really hard on a day one campaign to go on kick track and look and see what the trend has been like and what their backers are doing and pledging wise so it just gives us a little bit more to kind of look at we will break down the campaign and of course the rewards but first let's get to the trailer and the pitch video and see how it is it is a Kickstarter project that they love so they are getting a little extra tension of that for that little badge here we go what I find absolutely compelling and unique to the Dungeons & Dragons art is that it shows you a scene but it doesn't show you the scene it's saying this happens now what are you going to do about it that's kind of what dungeon dragons is about it's about reading into things and figuring out the story for yourself and that's what you're doing with these images I have an idea of the character that I want to play but it's the art that fine-tunes it enix bounds my imagination to make me go even deeper into that character the lack of defined border to Dungeons and Dragons and the art form that then kind of goes along with it allows for an incredible creative outpouring and expression monsters and fantasy fused with with gaming it's just how could you resist why wouldn't anybody be in love with this stuff there is suddenly a beholder in front of you well what's a beholder it's a really angry onion with eyes teeth and typically stalks and then you show them this picture you cannot have Dungeons & Dragons without the artwork that supplements it these characters these creatures these monsters these places are like a fairy tale they can be reinterpreted over and over again for each generation these are guys who created not just a brand not just an IP not just a book they created a whole new movement of art I don't feel famous I just feel lucky I'm happy that my art got to pull people into a game or a book that made them happy [Music] okay so there we are that's the trailer for eye of the beholder let's step through it and see what we can kind of learn and just talk about it now as always because I'm a filmmaker I'm always gonna be a little bit more critical or pointing out a few things that aren't necessarily the typical let's see what can do first there's definitely no intro or outro from the from the team behind this which you know that the trailer serves fine but I always like that personal connection because this the Kickstarter is your chance to help make your projects become a reality not to say this is my project support it give me your money and I feel like this trailer does a little bit of that only because I have no idea why they're on Kickstarter yet and this trailer is a perfect opportunity to discuss that so we get cave girl productions x-ray films right up front and then basically we get some of the artwork and we go into some of the interviews and a lot of the stuff is shot fairly well there's some stuff that isn't shot super great I mean there it looks like they're at a con here which is why it's a little more bland in terms of a background anytime we're doing an art project you really want to have nice backgrounds like this because you're talking about color and visuals and things that pop so you want it to kind of mirror what's going on here looks like that guy's kind of reminds me that guys this is probably the illustrator that's awesome we get to see a lot of our end my biggest problem with this is that we have a trailer that talks about the art and it says it's great it's unique it's awesome but then what like what is the statement like are they pioneers did it lead to something bigger I don't know what the the thematic statement of this film is just yet for for it to push me over the edge I'm interested in it because I like art and heck I've interviewed a bunch of the people that are in this film from my series box art gaming docu-series about the artists that were responsible for the cover art of video game boxes so I know a lot of these people and I know the the conundrum with you know what do you say about art because it speaks to an individual so when you're talking about it in the scope of a film how do you discuss that Larry Elmore great guy Legend if you will artist I just I think the trailer is a little underwhelming it says everything that you would expect it to say the art is great these people were great there's a lot of of happening but I just don't feel like it's super compelling it's definitely something I want to watch and let me say that above and beyond this this campaign came out a few days ago and go to the update this came out on February 14th and right now it is if I'm a date it is February 18 so it's been four days and I wanted to back it right away but I thought you know what I'm gonna wait a few days let the data roll in see what we can make a little bit more of an educated decision and go from there so let's knowing that this is a project that Kickstarter loves and it's and it's a subject matter that I love and I love D&D I love fantasy art let's see if they can sway me to backing it based on what we can read in the campaign body and the reward so roll for initiative which is a nice little I gamer term as an exciting new feature length documentary explores the history influences stories behind the artwork that helped create the worlds in which we all played the movie profiles D&D artists both past and present former TSR insider scheme designers authors and fans I have beholder is the celebration of all the art we love so much so we're getting a little bit more information right here now the film didn't or the trailer didn't necessarily say that we're gonna talk about the history influence and stories behind the artwork we didn't get that at all we just talked about kind of how cool the artwork was so that makes me feel a little better making movies never easy team beholder spent the last three years traveling conducting interviews and uncovering original art and artifacts from every era of D&D to pull it off we've had to dig deep into our own money pouches another one post production our adventure is nearing the end we need your help to finish the documentary and get it out for everyone to enjoy we're aiming to hold the world premiere at Gen Con and Indianapolis this August so okay couple things to take away here they've been bootstrapping or funding the whole film themselves for the last three years and this is a project I've heard of it for a while so I know that this has been the case and like I said I've interviewed some of the artists and they mentioned that these guys had talked to them so that's very very cool what I liked about that was when you come to Kickstarter in the more that you've got done the more that the backers can kind of say this is exactly what I'm getting now the danger with that is the backer can see exactly what they're getting and if it's not what they want and the style isn't good then it's harder for them to kind of maybe fork some of their cash over so for example if this let's say that they didn't they they were going to they said we're gonna interview Satine Phoenix who's a co-creator of maser canna and they're just pitching from their couch the the backer at that point has to imagine what that looks like they see this image they know exactly what its gonna look like and it might turn them off because it's not say as colorful as something like this so it's it's that inherent risk of when you put stuff out there you're putting it out there and you're being judged so just kind of you know take it for what it's worth it's it's a bit of a double-edged sword oh we got the characters these are basically people that appear in the docs so this is this is a really nice way of showcasing this and this is of course from all their footage that they've done so that's very nice not a lot of Doc's can do this because they don't always have the the footage to be able to pull they just have a list of names and I've been on both sides of that fence mainly I've been on the list a name side so this is a nice little trick that I'm probably gonna steal from them so that's cool look just pay attention anybody that's making a film in a documentary adventure up watch our first trailer for the film featuring Dede artist da da da da da da da da da da da da da so this is another trailer that you can watch for it treasure tables and the the important part about this thing is it would be important to see if this is different than the other ones you know what let's actually take a look Dungeons and Dragons is a game about imagination but imagination needs something to work off of with the indie the art has always been incredibly important in my opinion because this is where the adventure begins you're developing and being part of a whole nother world it's an ogre slingshot that slingshotting goblins that's what gets me excited about making art for Dungeons and Dragons I get to create something that has never existed before D&D was a perfect fit for me I got to not only draw it but make stories about it and scare my friends heroines and villains and Dragons and all these wild fantastic animals I I know my mother would looked at me a couple of times like you're doing what to this day I had people come up and say Dark Sun is why your art is why I bought this product it's what got me into Dungeons & Dragons the Dungeons & Dragons brand actually went on to define an entire genre what art should look like it's a huge honor to be a part of this I think it's a legacy and it's humbling certainly do realize how lucky I am do it the right place the right time and you know forge a little bit the history of the TSR role-playing universe here was his cohesive world that was envisioned by all these amazing artists that creates a groundwork for where we can grow our stories from where we can grow our myths from where we can grow our heroes from these images are more than just a product there's something beyond that [Music] okay so that's the first trailer for the film and let me see it right away that it's significantly better than what they put here and I would urge them to swap that right away because this actually goes into everything that they talked about up here it talks about the history of the influence the story behind the worlds that they all play it has more of a profile feel than what we get up here this just feels like something new for the sake of Kickstarter and it doesn't do it justice this has won me over more than anything else I saw and I'm glad that we took some time to take a look at it we all we don't always take a look at some of the the in campaign links because they're not always compelling and you know what time is money and I don't always have time to stop and look at all the little links that you have if I'm gonna try to make a decision so good on them for including that there put it up front that's way better than your other one way better it still doesn't have an introduction but that's way better treasure table so absolutely thrilled off of these six are prints but legendary deed in the artists theory Elmore Arrow Lotus from Todd luck well Jenelle Jackie's and Todd d2r elizy I apologize for that get one personally sign in front of your choice at $55 psych office level limited to 250 back tears get all six one hundred and fifty dollar beholder level in one hundred and seventy purple worm levels these are the prints that they're offering which is cool and this is just some more the rewards the DVDs and stuff stretch goals now we know Adventures of the loot solos as you delve deeper in the dungeon new rewards reveal themselves 30,000 Sun print by diesel ofourse we're adding a print to that artist that we just talked about that's seven prints at those two tiers so that's cool and that's the only stretch goal they have right now and I don't think they're quite at 30,000 they're 27 six so they're you know twenty five hundred off go back down here see what else is I think we're at risks and challenges Oh dungeon master x-ray film so this is Bryan Stillman has more than 20 years of experience as a professional journalist and filmmaker working both in print document produced Iran the docu-series the toys that made us and in 2014 he released the documentary plastic galaxy this story of the Star Wars toys through his own production company x-ray films plastic galaxy is distributed by gravitas and available on these things so Brian has written produced articles I know Brian we actually talked a lot for my film on Nintendo quest and distribution strategy so that's very cool that he was been able to kind of parlay his success to these things good for him in good way to go Brian cave girl productions headed by Kelly and Seth Polanski I began producing independent films in 2014 including 13 short films include broken continent which success theories over 50,000 on Kickstarter good stuff and they released the award-winning dramedy feature film of dice amend so just talking more about stuff here which is great I don't know that this is necessarily important the back story but it's nice if you want to learn a little bit more about them so here's thank you with your help we'll be able to complete post-production including music composition and licensing animation and color correction we're able to submit either holder to film festivals gaming sci-fi fantasy just from there we'll see Co distribution then world domination or at least domination over our gaming tables so there here's some legal disclaimer basically saying that they are not authorized sanction endorsed or approved purpose of the film is report on explore and document the history so this is kind of important so this is them covering their bots good for you guys risks and challenges as the producers behind successful movies documentaries as well as a Netflix series of numerous short films we know what it takes to bring projects like this to completion we also we also fully understand the kinds of pitfalls that can get in the way and how to avoid them since we are now finishing up the last few interviews and I've fully dived in the post-production the risks of not completing the project is extremely low we've invested three years of planning research and traveling for interviews and our own funds to make sure that IB holder comes frisson our goal is to have the premiere film the premiere the finish film at Gen Con we we need to have a screen or copy finish for submission by April 15 so we're charging full steam ahead so that's awesome there you go so let's take a look at the rewards now 5 bucks personal thank you I think it's a little high for a personal thank you throw it out a buck you've got 8 backers it's 40 bucks you probably maybe get more if it was only dollar you know how I feel about that 10 bucks old gamers never die but characters do so they're basically a bumper sticker away for 10 bucks is a little high but that'll cover there's only shipping to the United States I just I it's too much of a tchotchke for me to really care about this I do like how they have titled these essential NPC kobold they're actually kind of delving into the themes of it that's nice 25 bucks digital copy the completed film that seems really high for a digital copy of the film this is a from a producer on Netflix he's got a Netflix connection meaning that this could really end up there so if I have enough of this subscription and I'm paying 10 bucks a month for that why am I gonna pay $25 for a digital copy of this when it's likely gonna be on there I think you know something more reasonable like 10 or 15 bucks is where there should be so I think this is priced really high but 23 backers disagree with me so there you go $30 digital copy the film extended artist Insider interviews and behind-the-scenes your name in the film's credits o 71 backers this is pretty popular I think the name the credits is always a nice little pull when you can do that and clearly a lot of people want to spend the extra 5 bucks to to kind of get their their credit for 30 bucks that might be worth it again I like this at 25 so this is a little bit more closer to reality I think the 25 dollars for the digital copy is about 10 bucks 15 bucks too much 25 bucks for the digital kind of inclusive exclusive look I think makes sense 40 bucks here we go willow willow wisp so this is basically the DVD version plus this sticker which is is shipping to everywhere so they're probably gonna just include it in there and plus the name in the film's credits this is pretty popular too I dated four backers for 40 bucks so that's where a good chunk of their their money's coming from horror hook your choice of one of two t-shirts digital or DVD copy of the film sticker name the credits 55 bucks this is when you're gonna get one of your prints so you get your choice of one of our six prints personally signed art prints a digital copy or DVD the film old gamers never die sticker your name in the film's credit so this isn't bad so essentially for 15 bucks more than just the DVD you get in art print signed by one of the artists which is really nice and we've already seen what these prints look like they are here and I believe we don't have the seventh one it looks like so one two three four five six so there's the seventh one that they haven't included yet that they need to add to that unfortunately so they need to update that so that that kind of sucks that it hasn't been updated so that's 55 cyclops 75 hydra both t-shirts basically it's just the same as the other one but it's just you know that's the case no shipping will be collected via back york later via bakit well what if i don't want to do back ok you can't actually force someone to do backer kit I don't think in order to complete their pledge because it's forcing them to do a third-party service when they don't necessarily have to so I'm not sure about that I I don't know if I could dig deep into Kickstarter right now to figure that out but I don't know that you can force that to happen just a heads up for any potential project creators it's always better to put it here anyways although what I do like about having the shipping not included any of this is that this number right here is actually what they have raised for their films specifically it does not include shipping so it's a little bit easier to gauge which I like so that is the nice part about what they're doing there one hundred and fifty dollars all six personally signed art prints so basically four hundred bucks more than the 55 195 which includes one so forty bucks is the DVD so for one hundred and ten dollars you get six prints so they're about you know 18 bucks each which is pretty good for a signed art print to be honest if you love all these pieces and you love all these artists and you love D&D stuff that's a really actually good deal twenty-nine backers on that that's a good deal and you still get a t-shirt here so it's not that it's just the DVD plus the six prints at 18 bucks each you're getting one of the t-shirts you're getting a bumper sticker this is actually a really good pledge level and then for 175 which is only 25 bucks more you're basically buying the extra t-shirt at this point so I don't see the huge value there they're going from both a DVD and digital to it from a DVD or digital here I I don't think that's a good deal this is this is a good level right now I'm a big fan of that level sucks dinner with filmmakers at GenCon five of those left team at executive producer credit on the film as well as all the awards evolved for $10,000 so you always try to have one outlandish one let's get a thousand bucks that makes sense so how many rewards they have here there feels like a lot so we got one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve so they're on the high end I would probably lose the ten thousand bucks I would probably lose maybe keep this thousand-dollar one I'm not sure yeah maybe keep it and then just kind of consolidate some of these and/or things I think the the the one that they could get rid of for sure is this bumper sticker just add it on to some of the other ones I mean I know that people want to support it and here's like ten bucks just to be a supporter it just it just feels tchotchke to me that's all and the other big problem is this this $25.00 for the for the digital copy but on what you know to their to their credit that becomes worth more as you you know kind of pledge or more so there is that kind of logic to it but a lot of people aren't gonna want to put more than 25 bucks into it so let's take a look at kik track okay here we are on kik track as you can see 110 percent of the goal they're turning towards 663 percent the daily data right here you can see that it's it's finely mellowed out after one two three four we're on our on day five stretch goals critical hit reached our goal unless 72 hours here's geekdad talking about it in terms of press thank you from the road so they're out there and driving around and they're updating so that's always nice because it's always hard to make a film and then run a Kickstarter campaign so that's great that that's happening they don't have any tags yet and like I said the campaign is by cave girl productions surprise it's not by x-ray films in Brian's company daily data here we are so they raise 15,000 on day one six thousand on day two so that's our normal drop and then so it's like 50% 50% and then two-thirds and then so here we are we're it's early in the morning on day five so five hundred fifty is not where they're going to but they're averaging 5500 per day it's hard to say where they're gonna end up this isn't like a crazy crazy like railroad runaway production campaign on Kickstarter but they're doing well and because they did 15,000 on day one of 25,000 if you knew they were gonna hit their goal because all they had to do is make up 10,000 bucks by the end again the rule is if you get about 25 percent on day one then you're then you're in good shape here number of backers per day is eighty nine which is really nice that that means that by the end of their thirty days you know they could have easily like twenty seven hundred backers they'll probably level out around fifteen hundred I would think cuz it's gonna dip down and then come back up again as it always does carbons per day is nine again we already talked about the stretch goal or the comments there in the press not enough data yet for projection because it's using the day before so they usually like to have five or six days before they can actually project where they're going to be based on what I'm what I'm seeing here I would take a guess maybe that we're gonna end up around sixty five thousand you could say depends on what those stretch goals are I think that'll really start driving the project and it'll be interesting to see what they choose to do an order of keeping interest alive let's take a look at the updates we kind of flushed this page earlier so thank you from the road absolutely amazing first day and a half seventy nine percent funded officially been selected by Kickstarter the projects we love thank you we reached her goal in less than 72 hours more announcements coming soon and then basically the stretch goal announcement which is cool a frequently asked questions why hasn't this blank why isn't this person up in an interview for the film I unfortunately you know where I was we're trying to balance that desire to include everyone the needs telling its story unfortunately means leaving some people out it's true types of t-shirts and sizes of offering men and women small medium large extra-large as well as 2x and 3x how big are the art prints this is a great question because it's not mentioned anywhere else although approximately eight and a half by eleven though they might be a tiny bit bigger or smaller depending on our options but the printer might be standards there'll be a standard size making them easy to frame this also makes it easier to ship them safely this is something that even though they are they mention it here they should put back in the campaign page right by those art prints and their treasure table what regional the DVD be the DVD will be regions your own meaning you can play it anywhere in the world so again this might be something you want to put in the campaign here because we talked in the campaign we see all their little goodies so they should be here grab the completed film on DVD included extend artist interviews with the DVD will be region 0 and then again so here here are the two t-shirts and here are the prints so also they didn't update it that's my bad the prints will be approximately in half by 11 there might be a tiny bit smaller so that's good that they through that they're good on you guys see you caught it good stuff comments let's see what some of the comments are Brian Stillman collaborator super back we've got the first stretch goal up and fans of D&D our early black and white work will love this one so that's great this is fantastic this is all good I love the frequency in which Brian is responding to these questions that that shows a lot of dedication and low-k there's Janelle got a flat I'd say the best thing about this project for me has been meeting and making friends with Brian and Seth and Kelly of Kate growth that's awesome so she's awesome I got to interview her this is wicked and I just what I love looking at these comments is just scanning to see what's going on I just I love the back and forth between KL productions and Brian this this is good this is really healthy that there's a lot of basically every other comment is is being answered that's that's fantastic let's take a look at the community so we have 447 backers we know this they're mainly coming from the US there are some US only shipping goals but they're mainly from the US there's 23 new backers which isn't bad it's you know roughly 5% I think not good at math off the time I had most of them are from LA or at least that's the number one city LA in New York and Toronto's up there there you go Canada represent very cool yeah so now it comes to the time do we back this or is this busted is it worth being backed or as a busted what kills me is there's some great stuff and I feel like the campaign this video this this trailer is not nearly as good as the first one I definitely swap that that first trailer actually made me a lot more interested and backing it what kills me though is this campaign is gay towards the superfan and not somebody who just has a casual interest in and seeing what the the documentary is about as someone who is a little bit more on the casual interest side I feel like I'd rather just wait for Netflix because I don't want to pay 25 bucks for a digital copy when it's probably gonna be on Netflix anyways given that the producer you know produce the toys that made us and has got it out digitally in other places before his other films so I just it's hard to back it with my interest level and I think that that is a major strike against the campaign you've got to kind of go all-in for a critical amount like you can see here because I'm from Canada it's you know for me to get a DVD of the film with all this extra stuff which is kind of if I'm gonna spend money I'd rather do that it's 50 dollars for a DVD with with deleted scenes and stuff I just can't I can't do that but so that's a lot of money and it's not really realistic I can appreciate that they've spent a lot of money already in three years making films for 25 bucks for a digital copy and in 40 dollars for us for a DVD is it's just a lot of money out of the hopper now if I had the extra cash I would absolutely go for the the 150 level to get all personally signed art prints or even the $55 level this is nice because then I would get you know one of my favorite artists that I seen there to sign it but I just an additional unsigned prints that are available for 20 bucks each as an add-on be a backer kit so like what I could really do is instead of going 55 here you know I could go 25 and get a digital copy of the film and basically for 20 bucks for 45 for 45 bucks that I get the print which is the main difference right oh so I apologize I also get the bottle behind the scenes stuff right so no it just says yeah with bonus content so that is at level 30 so for 20 bucks for 50 bucks I get the name the credits the extra stuff digitally it just will copy the film and an art print for 20 bucks so I lose the sticker and I save 5 bucks you know that's that's kind of the route that I don't know I mean the sticker I guess is five bucks it's worth five bucks at that point but I don't know it's it's really hard to to back this one because I don't think some of these prices are easy to back I wanna I wanna back and I want to like it it's just so hard ultimately I think because I know a lot of people in this and because I'm a fan of spreading art and information I'm going to back it but this is one where I'm very on the fence about it and I just not a huge fan so I'm gonna go for the $30 tier level and I'm gonna back it so there we are I backed it I'm not a huge fan of back in this this is you know it's never cut and dry on Kickstarter but it gets me to put my thirty bucks down now to support the campaign in the documentary which I I do believe in and I'm a huge fan that they they spend three years to shoot first it's not always something everybody can do but I do think the reward structure isn't great and the only reason I'm doing this is basically to get a twenty dollar print which I might even be able to just do through backer kit later so we'll see right now I'm not even confirmed at all I'm gonna keep my pledge at this level I may cancel it later it's it's a little bit over on the one side than the other and only because I saw that other trailer so right now it's back but that's not necessarily where I'm gonna sit by the end of the campaign I may pull my funding depending on what else happens so they've got my money for now and they've got my support I just hope that they earned it so that'll do it for another episode of backed or busted if you got a campaign that you would like me to highlight and maybe dig deeper into you for you to see if it's good if it's got the goods let me know if you need help with your project or campaign and want an extra set of eyes to go over it happy to do so hit me up twitter at
